Adsorption of cationic cetylpyridinium chloride on pyrite surface

Hydrophobization of aerogels based on chitosan, nanocellulose and tannic acid: Improvements on the aerogel features and the adsorption of contaminants in water

Hydrophobic chitosan aerogels are promising adsorbents for immiscible contaminants such as oils and organic solvents. However, few studies have reported the application of hydrophobic aerogels as adsorbent for organic contaminants dissolved in water. Herein, novel highly hydrophobic chitosan (CS) beads containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and hydrophobized tannic acid (HTA) composite were prepared with different CS and CNC-HTA content to achieve an optimized adsorbent to remove emerging contaminants from water in batch and fixed-bed assays. The CS@CNC-HTA beads properties were assessed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, XPS, Micro-CT, WCA, and zeta potential. Supramolecular interactions and physical interlacements between CS and CNC-HTA enabled the formation of CS@CNC-HTA beads with high porosity (98.6%), great volume of open pore space (10.16 mm³) and hydrophobicity (121.8°). The 1:1 CS@CNC-HTA beads showed the best performance for removing the pharmaceutical sildenafil citrate, the basic blue 26 dye, and the surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride, reaching adsorption capacities of 86 (73%), 375 (84%), and 390 (90%) mg.g^-1, respectively. The 1:1 CS@CNC-HTA beads efficiently removed sildenafil citrate, basic blue 26 and cetylpyridinium chloride in fixed-bed experiments with exhaustion times of 890, 300, and 470 min, respectively. Theoretical calculations and adsorption assays indicate that the main attractive interactions are pyridinium-π, π-π, electrostatic and hydrophobic.

Application of natural minerals in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: A review

Photocatalysis is an effective, inexpensive and environmentally friendly technology for the decomposition of various aqueous organic pollutants and plays an increasingly critical role in the degradation of pollutants. Natural minerals are abundant natural resources on Earth and can be obtained directly from nature. Natural minerals are excellent photocatalyst carriers that are environmentally friendly, low in price, and will not cause secondary pollution to the environment. Natural minerals have the characteristics of a large specific surface area, providing more active centres, and adsorbing pollutants to concentrate catalysis. Natural minerals are also excellent photocatalysts, such as haematite and magnetite, which play a very good role in the degradation of water pollutants. Studies that make full use of natural minerals are of great significance. This review covers the latest research on natural minerals as photocatalytic composite materials to degrade organic pollutants in water, including three parts: the classification of natural minerals, the structural description of natural mineral composites, and the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by natural mineral composites. In addition, the current limitations and opinions of natural mineral composites are discussed to achieve better results in applying natural minerals.

Synthesis of low-cost bentonite/Duranta erecta's fruit powder imbedded alginate beads and its application in surfactant removal

High industrialization and improved medical facilities are deteriorating aquatic bodies through untreated effluents. This study is aimed to design and characterize the bentonite, Duranta erecta, and their hybrid-alginate beads for the removal of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) from its aqueous solution. D. erecta's seed powder was treated by using a sonochemical method and embedded into alginate beads. All designed beads were characterized by using physicochemical methods, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Hybrid beads were found to form an appropriate hydrogel structure with maximum surface area per unit gram (544 cm² g^-1), 0.42 mg dry weight, and 2.70 mm diameter. Kinetics and intraparticle diffusion models were fitted where involvement of both chemisorption and intraparticle diffusion was observed during the initial 30 and post-30-min phase, respectively. Thermodynamic studies corroborated the spontaneity of the CTAB adsorption process. Bentonite alginate beads showed the highest adsorption capacity of 97.06 mg g^-1 in 100 mg L^-1 CTAB solution at optimized conditions, while hybrid-alginate beads showed excellent efficiency with a wide range of physicochemical conditions frame. Conclusively, designed beads can be used to remove the surfactant, i.e., CTAB, from industrial waste effluents for the betterment of water reservoirs.

Amorphous iron sulfide nanowires as an efficient adsorbent for toxic dye effluents remediation

Environmental and health concerns arising from the toxicity of organic dye effluents is still the issue of the twenty-first century. In that regard, this study presents iron sulfide (FeS₂) for its use in environmental remediation application. Amorphous phase FeS₂ nanowires were synthesized by PVP-assisted solvothermal reaction and were characterized using XRD, XPS, BET, FE-SEM, and EDS techniques. The amorphous phase FeS₂ is attractive from material synthesis point of view as its synthesis does not require delicate control over the process parameters, unlike the crystalline phase. The 1-D nanowire FeS₂ had a high surface-to-volume ratio with negative zeta potential within a wide pH range. Having those surface and microstructural properties, these nanowires exhibited excellent adsorption property towards model organic dyes, Congo red (anionic), and methylene blue (cationic), with theoretical adsorption capacity of 118.86 and 48.82 mg g^-1, respectively. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were implemented to study the adsorption processes at different adsorption conditions (pH, adsorbent loading, initial adsorbate concentration). The pH dependence of the adsorption and FT-IR analysis evidenced the prevalence of both physisorption and chemisorption during the adsorption of Congo red. Recyclability test proved the excellent performance of this amorphous FeS₂ nanowire adsorbent for three consecutive cycles. Considering its ease of synthesis, excellent adsorption property, and cyclic performance, the as-prepared adsorbent could be a promising material for dye effluents treatment.
