Synthesis of ionic liquids based on alkylimidazolium salts and their coal dissolution and dispersion properties

Insights into the estimation of surface tensions of mixtures based on designable green materials using an ensemble learning scheme

Precise estimation of the physical properties of both ionic liquids (ILs) and their mixtures is crucial for engineers to successfully design new industrial processes. Among these properties, surface tension is especially important. It's not only necessary to have knowledge of the properties of pure ILs, but also of their mixtures to ensure optimal utilization in a variety of applications. In this regard, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Stochastic Gradient Boosting (SGB) tree in modeling surface tensions of binary mixtures of various ionic liquids (ILs) using a comprehensive dataset. The dataset comprised 4010 experimental data points from 48 different ILs and 20 non-IL components, covering a surface tension range of 0.0157-0.0727 N m-1 across a temperature range of 278.15-348.15 K. The study found that the estimated values were in good agreement with the reported experimental data, as evidenced by a high correlation coefficient (R) and a low Mean Relative Absolute Error of greater than 0.999 and less than 0.004, respectively. In addition, the results of the used SGB model were compared to the results of SVM, GA-SVM, GA-LSSVM, CSA-LSSVM, GMDH-PNN, three based ANNs, PSO-ANN, GA-ANN, ICA-ANN, TLBO-ANN, ANFIS, ANFIS-ACO, ANFIS-DE, ANFIS-GA, ANFIS-PSO, and MGGP models. In terms of the accuracy, the SGB model is better and provides significantly lower deviations compared to the other techniques. Also, an evaluation was conducted to determine the importance of each variable in predicting surface tension, which revealed that the most influential factor was the mole fraction of IL. In the end, William's plot was utilized to investigate the model's applicability range. As the majority of data points, i.e. 98.5% of the whole dataset, were well within the safety margin, it was concluded that the proposed model had a high applicability domain and its predictions were valid and reliable.

Effect of ionic liquids on the microstructure and combustion performance of Shengli lignite

To ensure the safe transportation and efficient utilisation of lignite, it is important to inhibit its spontaneous combustion. In this study, Shengli lignite (SL+) was used as the research object and ionic liquids (ILs) were used to pretreat the lignite to investigate their effect on the combustion performance of lignite. On this basis, the relationship between the structure and combustion performance of lignite with different structures (heat treatment, oxidation) after ILs treatment was investigated. Results indicated that the combustion of lignite treated with ILs shifted towards higher temperatures. The most pronounced effect was observed in coal samples treated with [BMIM]Cl (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride), with the maximum combustion rate corresponding to a temperature increase of approximately 57 °C compared to that of the untreated lignite. For the heat-treated lignite, the temperature corresponding to the maximum combustion rate was approximately 38 °C higher than that of the untreated lignite. After [BMIM]Cl treatment, the combustion performance of the heat-treated lignite changed very slightly. In contrast, for oxidised lignite, the temperature corresponding to the maximum combustion rate decreased by approximately 54 °C compared with that of the untreated lignite and increased by approximately 135 °C after treatment with [BMIM]Cl. The characterisation results show that the content of aliphatic hydrogen and oxygen-containing functional groups decreased in the heat-treated lignite, while the content of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups increased in the oxidised lignite. The microstructure of the heat-treated lignite after [BMIM]Cl treatment changed slightly. In contrast, in the oxidised lignite after [BMIM]Cl treatment, the content of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups decreased, whereas the content of ether (C-O-) structures increased. The increased content of ether (C-O-) structures improved the stability of the coal samples. It is believed that the inhibition of lignite combustion is mainly attributed to the high stability of the ether (C-O-) structures. The kinetic analysis demonstrated that the ILs treatment increased the activation energy of lignite combustion.

Experimental Study on Organic Sulfur Removal in Bituminous Coal by a 1-Carboxymethyl-3-methyl Imidazolium Bisulfate Ionic Liquid and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

In order to improve the total sulfur removal rate in coal combustion, an acidic ionic liquid (IL) 1-carboxymethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([HOOCCH2mim][HSO4]) as the extractant combined with the oxidant 30% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was applied to reduce the total sulfur content, and its microscopic mechanism of desulfurization was analyzed. The experimental results show that the desulfurization rate of the [HOOCCH2mim][HSO4]-H2O2 (1:10) solution was 45.12% and the organic sulfur removal rate was 16.26%, which were significantly higher than those of only H2O2 or pure [HOOCCH2mim][HSO4]. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses showed that the mercaptan -SH and disulfide -S-S- in coal decreased after being treated with IL-H2O2. In particular, the results of FTIR spectroscopy indicated that the relative proportion of -S-S-and -SH treated with IL-H2O2 (1:10) decreased by 31.9 and 27.2%, respectively, compared with that of a pure IL. This is due to H2O2 oxidation; -SH and -S-S- were oxidized to sulfoxide and then the sulfoxide transferred from the coal phase to the IL phase, which improved organic sulfur removal from coal. Therefore, the combination of an ionic liquid and H2O2 could increase the total desulfurization rate. In addition, the thermogravimetric analysis of coal is divided into four different stages; the weight loss during the combustion stage and the residues show that the IL-H2O2 could improve the coal combustion because of good previous swelling and destruction of bridge bonds and hydrogen bonding of coal. Besides, the fewer residues in IL-H2O2-treated coals also indicate that a less amount of inorganic substance is left in coal after IL-H2O2 desulfurization, which is consistent with the desulfurization results.
