Advance of Microemulsion and Application for Enhanced Oil Recovery

With the ongoing advancement in oil exploration, microemulsion, as an innovative oil displacement method, has garnered considerable attention owing to its exceptional physicochemical properties in enhancing crude oil recovery. As such, this study initially delineates the fundamental concepts, classifications, formation mechanisms, advantages, and preparation methodologies of microemulsions. Subsequently, it introduces the selection criteria for microemulsion components, followed by an elucidation of the characterization methods for microemulsions based on these criteria. Furthermore, it examines the factors influencing the efficacy of microemulsions in enhancing oil recovery through two distinct methods, along with the effects of various formulation microemulsions under laboratory and oilfield conditions. Additionally, it outlines prospects, challenges, and future development trends pertaining to microemulsions.

Multiple-Stimuli-Responsive Surfactant-Free Microemulsions Based on Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) have been applied to colloidal systems such as microemulsions, despite the development of stimulus-responsive HDESs still being in a preliminary stage. Here, menthol and indole were hydrogen bonded to form CO₂-responsiveness HDES. A surfactant-free microemulsion constituted of HDES (menthol-indole) as the hydrophobic phase, water as the hydrophilic phase, and ethanol as the double solvent was demonstrated to be CO₂- and temperature-responsive. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) proved the single-phase region of the phase diagram, while conductivity and polarity probing techniques confirmed the kind of microemulsion. The ternary phase diagram and DLS methods were used to investigate the responsiveness of CO₂ and effect temperature on the microemulsion drop size and behavior of the phase of the HDES/water/ethanol microemulsion. The findings revealed that when temperature increased, the homogeneous phase region increased. The droplet size in the homogeneous phase region of the associated microemulsion may be reversibly and accurately adjusted by adjusting the temperature. Surprisingly, a slight temperature change can cause a significant phase inversion. Furthermore, in the system, there was no demulsification in time for the CO₂/N₂ responsiveness process but rather the production of a homogeneous and pellucid aqueous solution.

CO2-Responsive Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvent Based on Surfactant-Free Microemulsion-Mediated Synthesis of BaF2 Nanoparticles

A new form of surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME) including hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES)/ethanol/water was constructed based on its CO2 response, and three regions, that is, HDES-in-water (HDES/W), bicontinuous (B.C.), and water-in-HDES (W/HDES) regions, were recognized. It is anticipated that SFMEs with tunable microstructures have outstanding applications as nanoreactors in reaction processes. The feasibility of preparing nanoparticles from HDES/ethanol/water SFME using barium fluoride (BaF2) as a model nanoparticle was investigated. HDES-based microemulsions benefit from HDES's excellent properties (novel, low toxicity, CO2-responsive, easy availability) and have potential in universal reactions, drug delivery, advanced material fabrication, etc. In this research, HDES-based microemulsions were prepared using HDES as the oil phase. Phase equilibria and microstructure were investigated using a ternary phase diagram, UV spectrophotometry, and the conductivity method. The CO2 switchable characteristics of the HDES-based microemulsions were investigated. HDES-based microemulsions were proposed as nanoreactors for the synthesis of barium fluoride nanomaterials. The microemulsion structure can modulate the size, morphology, and physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles through the CO2 switchable properties. It is argued that nanoreactors constructed with versatile HDES will offer a new direction for creation of cutting-edge scientific applications.

Conformance Control in Oil Reservoirs by Citric Acid-Coated Magnetite Nanoparticles

Reservoir conformance control methods may significantly improve enhanced oil recovery technologies through reduced water production and profile correction. Excessive water production in oil and gas reservoirs leads to severe problems. Water shutoff and conformance control are, therefore, financially and environmentally advantageous for the petroleum industry. In this paper, water shutoff performance of citric acid-coated magnetite (CACM) and hematite nanoparticles (NPs) as well as polyacrylamide polymer solution in a heterogeneous and homogeneous two-dimensional micromodel is compared. A facile one-step technique is used to synthesize the CACM NPs. The NPs, which are reusable, easily prepared, and environmentally friendly, are characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and X-ray diffraction. The results confirm uniform spherical Fe₃O₄ NPs of an average diameter of 40 nm, well coated with citric acid. CACM NPs provide a high pressure drop coupled with an acceptable resistance factor and residual resistance factor owing to NP arrangement into a solid-/gel-like structure in the presence of a magnetic field. A resistance factor and a residual resistance factor of 3.5 and 2.14, respectively, were achieved for heavy oil and the heterogeneous micromodel. This structure contributed to an appreciable plugging efficiency. CACM NPs respond to ∼1000 G of magnetic field intensity and display a constant resistance factor at intensities between 4500 and 6000 G. CACM NPs act as a gel, forming a solid-/gel-like structure, which moves toward the magnetic field and thereby shuts off the produced water and increases the oil fraction. The findings of this study suggest the ability to shut off water production using specially designed magnetic field-responsive smart fluids. The application would require innovative design of field equipment.

Optimization of microemulsion cleaning sludge conditions using response surface method

Microemulsion cleaning method has been proved to be an effective way to clean oily sludge with low interfacial tension and high solubilizing ability for non-miscible liquids. In this paper, the percentage range of the microemulsion in the formulation was obtained by studying phase behavior of the microemulsion. The response surface method was used to model and optimize the microemulsion to obtain the best formulation: n-BuOH content at 9.89%, NaCl content at 2.24% and AES/APG ratio at 3.75, and the oil removal rate reached 97.28%. Meanwhile, the cleaning conditions of oil sludge were also optimized by the response surface method and the optimal cleaning parameters were determined as liquid-solid ratio at 4.2, stirring rate at 157 r·min^-1, and stirring time at 38 min. In addition, some experiments were carried out to confirm the simulation results, affording the oil removal rate of 98.79%. SEM and FTIR confirmed that the oil on the sludge can be removed by microemulsion.

Study of Asphaltene Precipitation during CO2 Injection into Oil Reservoirs in the Presence of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles by Interfacial Tension and Bond Number Measurements

CO₂ injection is one of the most frequently used enhanced oil recovery methods; however, it causes asphaltene precipitation in porous media and wellbore and wellhead facilities. Carbon dioxide saturated with nanoparticles can be used to enhance oil recovery with lower asphaltene precipitation issues. In this study, the vanishing interfacial tension technique was used to investigate the possibility of diminishing asphaltene precipitation by nanoparticles. The interfacial tension (IFT) of synthetic oil/carbon dioxide was measured using the pendant drop method. The results illustrated that, for synthetic oil samples containing asphaltene, the IFT data versus pressure decrease linearly with two different slopes at low- and high-pressure ranges. At high pressures, the slope of the plot is lower than the one in the low-pressure range. The addition of iron oxide nanoparticles to the oil solution reduces the interfacial tension at higher pressures with a steeper slope, showing that nanoparticles can decrease asphaltene precipitation. The plot of Bond number versus pressure also confirmed the impact of nanoparticles on reducing asphaltene precipitation. In terms of the temperature effect, the presence of nanoparticles at 50 °C resulted in a 16.34% reduction in asphaltene precipitation and a 19.65% reduction at 70 °C. The minimum miscibility pressure changed from 10.17 to 30.96 MPa at 70 °C; however, in the presence of nanoparticles, it reduced from 10.06 to 16.56. Therefore, the technique introduced in this study could be applied to avoid the problems associated with altering the gas injection mode from miscible to immiscible.

Conformance control in oil reservoir based on magnetorheological behavior of nanoparticle suspension

Water shut off and performance control in oil reservoirs involve many techniques both for reducing the water cut and for enhancing oil production with the aim of making it economical and environmental friendly. Therefore, suitable nanoparticles for injection in an oil reservoir regarding nano size, spherical morphology, and better dispersibility were synthesized by one step, facile, and inexpensive method and then characterized in this work. In addition, new magnetorheological (MR) fluids based on the crude oil and the nanoparticles were developed, and the analysis of their rheological properties carried out by rotational and oscillation tests showed their ability of forming gel-like structure. Furthermore, from the core flooding experiment investigated, values of both resistance factor and residual resistance factor showed that the MR fluids exhibit a solid-like form with the magnetical field applied in oil reservoirs, thereby reducing the water cut.

Emulsions in porous media: From single droplet behavior to applications for oil recovery

Emulsions are suspensions of droplets ubiquitous in oil recovery from underground reservoirs. Oil is typically trapped in geological porous media where emulsions are either formed in situ or injected to elicit oil mobilization and thus enhance the amount of oil recovered. Here, we briefly review basic concepts on geometrical and wetting features of porous media, including thin film stability and fluids penetration modes, which are more relevant for oil recovery and oil-contaminated aquifers. Then, we focus on the description of emulsion flow in porous media spanning from the behaviour of single droplets to the collective flow of a suspension of droplets, including the effect of bulk and interfacial rheology, hydrodynamic and physico-chemical interactions. Finally, we describe the particular case of emulsions used in underground porous media for enhanced oil recovery, thereby discussing some perspectives of future work. Although focused on oil recovery related topics, most of the insights we provide are useful towards remediation of oil-contaminated aquifers and for a basic understanding of emulsion flow in any kind of porous media, such as biological tissues.
