Impact of metastable graphene-diamond coatings on the fracture toughness of silicon carbide

Silicon carbide has excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness and strength, but its applications for body armor and protective coating solutions are limited by its poor toughness. It has been demonstrated that epitaxial graphene-coated SiC can enhance SiC mechanical properties due to the pressure-activated phase transition into a sp3 diamond structure. Here, we show that atomically thin graphene coatings increase the hardness of SiC even for indentation depths of ∼10 μm. Very importantly, the graphene coating also causes an increase of the fracture toughness by 11% compared to bare SiC, which is in contradiction with the general indirect variation of hardness and fracture toughness. This is explained in terms of the presence of a diamond phase under the indenter while the rest of the coating remains in the ultra-tough graphene phase. This study opens new venues for understanding hardness and toughness in metastable systems and for the applications of graphene-coatings.

Fluorine-Induced Electric Field Gradient in 3D Porous Aromatic Frameworks for Highly Efficient Capture of Xe and F-Gases

The development of robust and efficient porous adsorbents is essential for capturing xenon (Xe) and perfluorinated electron specialty gases (F-gases) in semiconductor exhaust gases, as toxic and corrosive gases coexist in high-temperature plasma degradation off-gases. Herein, two three-dimensional (3D) fluorinated porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with abundant fluorine (labeled PAF-4F and PAF-8F) were synthesized. The two PAFs exhibit high IAST selectivity in capturing Xe and F-gases from semiconductor off-gases, as well as excellent physicochemical stability and reusability, which have been collaboratively verified by single-component gas adsorption and regeneration tests, etc. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation revealed that the entry of strongly electronegative fluorine atoms into PAFs causes localized charge separation on the polymer pore surface, resulting in the preferential adsorption of high-polarizability Xe and F-gases via induced electric field gradients. Systematic studies have sufficiently manifested the great potential of fluorine-functionalized porous materials to effectively capture Xe and F-gases, which provides practical insights into the fabrication of highly stable porous adsorbents for harsh operating conditions.

Chitosan capped Ag/NiS nanocomposites: A novel colorimetric probe for detection of L-cysteine at nanomolar level and its anti-microbial activity

L-Cysteine (L-cys) plays very crucial role in biological systems. The study reports the colorimetric detection of L-cys at nanomolar level using chitosan capped Ag decorated NiS nanocomposite (chit-Ag/NiS NCs).The chemical reduction and co-precipitation methods were adopted to prepare chit-Ag/NiS NCs. The fabricated NCs was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), FT-Raman, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The chit-Ag/NiS NCs particularly detect L-cys even in other amino acids presence. The chit-Ag/NiS NCs showed the surface charge of -26 ± 39.9 mV. The detection of L-cys was indicated by disappearance of yellowish-brown color of Chit-Ag/NiS NCs to colorless. A good linear correlation was found between absorbance vs logarithmic concentration of L-cys (1 μM to 1 nM) with R² value of 0.99. The chit-Ag/NiS NCs impregnated cotton swabs was prepared for real time detection of L-cys and the prepared probe was found to be highly selective and specific. The effect of pH, temperature and salinity influencing the L-cys detection was studied. Also, the antimicrobial activity of Chit-Ag/NiS NCs was investigated against gram negative (E. coli) and gram positive (B. subtilis) bacteria.

Selective Thermal Transformation of Automotive Shredder Residues into High-Value Nano Silicon Carbide

Automotive waste represents both a global waste challenge and the loss of valuable embedded resources. This study provides a sustainable solution to utilise the mixed plastics of automotive waste residue (ASR) as a resource that will curtail the landfilling of hazardous waste and its adverse consequences to the environment. In this research, the selective thermal transformation has been utilised to produce nano silicon carbide (SiC) using mixed plastics and glass from automotive waste as raw materials. The composition and formation mechanisms of SiC nanoparticles have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray-Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The as synthesised SiC nanoparticles at 1500 °C has uniform spherical shapes with the diameters of the fixed edges of about 50–100 nm with a porous structure. This facile way of synthesising SiC nanomaterials would lay the foundations for transforming complex wastes into value-added, high-performing materials, delivering significant economic and environmental benefits.

A Systematic Study on Bio-Based Hybrid Aerogels Made of Tannin and Silica

Tannin-silica hybrid materials are expected to feature excellent mechanic-chemical stability, large surface areas, high porosity and possess, after carbothermal reduction, high thermal stability as well as high thermal conductivity. Typically, a commercially available tetraethoxysilane is used, but in this study, a more sustainable route was developed by using a glycol-based silica precursor, tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)orthosilicate (EGMS), which is highly water-soluble. In order to produce highly porous, homogeneous hybrid tannin-silica aerogels in a one-pot approach, a suitable crosslinker has to be used. It was found that an aldehyde-functionalized silane (triethoxysilylbutyraldehyde) enables the covalent bonding of tannin and silica. Solely by altering the processing parameters, distinctly different tannin-silica hybrid material properties could be achieved. In particular, the amount of crosslinker is a significant factor with respect to altering the materials’ properties, e.g., the specific surface area. Notably, 5 wt% of crosslinker presents an optimal percentage to obtain a sustainable tannin-silica hybrid system with high specific surface areas of roughly 800–900 m² g⁻¹ as well as a high mesopore volume. The synthesized tannin-silica hybrid aerogels permit the usage as green precursor for silicon carbide materials.

Study on Damage of 4H-SiC Single Crystal through Indentation and Scratch Testing in Micro–Nano Scales

In this paper, a series of indentation tests in which the maximum normal force ranged from 0.4 to 3.3 N were carried out to determine the fracture toughness of 4H-SiC single crystals. The results indicated that an appropriate ratio of the distance from the indentation center to the radial crack tip to the distance from the indentation center to the indentation corner is significant to calculate fracture toughness of 4H-SiC single crystals. The critical condition with no cracks on the edge of the indentation was obtained through a fitting method. The surface morphologies of the groove were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Plastic deformation was observed and characterized by the smooth groove without cracks and ductile chips on the edge of the groove in the initial stages of scratch. With increased normal force, median cracks, radial cracks, and microcracks appeared in turn, followed by the crack system no longer being able to stably extend, causing the brittle fracture to dominate the material removal. The size of the edge damages were measured through SEM and the experimental data highly agreed with the predicted curve. A modified calculation model considering elastic recovery of the sample by the indenter during the scratching process was suggested. These results prove that elastic recovery of 4H-SiC single crystals cannot be ignored during ultra-precision machining.

Silicon Electrochemistry in Molten Salts

Silicon electrochemistry has the potential to advance sustainable energy solutions by offering environmentally friendly and secure technologies that can contribute to the low-carbon economy. Electrochemical methods use electrons directly as reducing agents, eliminating the need for harmful chemicals and offering simpler, one-step, process control. Silicon itself is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust, is nontoxic, and is a robust material offering high efficiencies in solar photovoltaics. As such, silicon currently dominates the solar energy market and could continue to do so for the next few decades. This review summarizes recent achievements in the molten salt electrochemistry of silicon, highlighting subjects of technological significance such as the production of silicon by silica electro-deoxidation, the formation of photoactive layers, silicon electrorefining, and the synthesis of semiconductors as well as nanostructures for energy storage applications. The review highlights future opportunities and challenges such as the production of highly pure silicon, the creation of carbon-free anodes for oxygen production, and silicon electrodeposition from gaseous precursors.

Mechanical Behavior Investigation of 4H-SiC Single Crystal at the Micro-Nano Scale

In this paper, theoretical models of the critical indentation depth and critical force on brittle materials using cleavage strength and contact theory are proposed. A Berkovich indenter is adopted for nanoindentation tests on a 4H-SiC single crystal sample to evaluate its mechanical behaviors. The stages of brittle material deformation (elastic, plastic, and brittle) can be characterized by the load versus indentation depth curves through the nanoindentation test. The curve of the elastic deformation stage follows the Hertz contact theory, and plastic deformation occurs at an indentation depth of up to 10 nm. The mechanism of 4H-SiC single crystal cracking is discussed, and the critical indentation depth and critical force for the plastic–brittle transition are obtained through the occurrence of the pop-in point. This shows that the theoretical results have good coherence with the test results. Both the values of the elastic modulus and hardness decrease as the crack length increases. In order to obtain more accurate mechanical property values in the nanoindentation test for brittle materials such as SiC, GaN, and sapphire, an appropriate load that avoids surface cracks should be adopted.

Locally Resonant Phononic Crystals at Low frequencies Based on Porous SiC Multilayer

In this work, a one-dimensional porous silicon carbide phononic crystal (1D-PSiC PnC) sandwiched between two rubber layers is introduced to obtain low frequency band gaps for the audible frequencies. The novelty of the proposed multilayer 1D-PnCs arises from the coupling between the soft rubber, unique mechanical properties of porous SiC materials and the local resonance phenomenon. The proposed structure could be considered as a 1D acoustic Metamaterial with a size smaller than the relevant 1D-PnC structures for the same frequencies. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to use PSiC materials in a 1D PnC structure for the problem of low frequency phononic band gaps. Also, the porosities and thicknesses of the PSiC layers were chosen to obtain the fundamental band gaps within the bandwidth of the acoustic transducers and sound suppression devices. The transmission spectrum of acoustic waves is calculated by using the transfer matrix method (TMM). The results revealed that surprising low band gaps appeared in the transmission spectra of the 1D-PSiC PnC at the audible range, which are lower than the expected ones by Bragg's scattering theory. The frequency at the center of the first band gap was at the value 7957 Hz, which is 118 times smaller than the relevant frequency of other 1D structures with the same thickness. A comparison between the phononic band gaps of binary and ternary 1D-PSiC PnC structures sandwiched between two rubber layers at the micro-scale was performed and discussed. Also, the band gap frequency is controlled by varying the layers porosity, number and the thickness of each layer. The simulated results are promising in many applications such as low frequency band gaps, sound suppression devices, switches and filters.

A Review: Preparation, Performance, and Applications of Silicon Oxynitride Film

Silicon oxynitride (SiN_xO_y) is a highly promising functional material for its luminescence performance and tunable refractive index, which has wide applications in optical devices, non-volatile memory, barrier layer, and scratch-resistant coatings. This review presents recent developments, and discusses the preparation methods, performance, and applications of SiN_xO_y film. In particular, the preparation of SiN_xO_y film by chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, and oxynitridation is elaborated in details.

Silicon carbide nanomaterial as a coating for solid-phase microextraction

Silicon carbide has excellent properties, such as corrosion resistance, high strength, oxidation resistance, high temperature, and so on. Based on these properties, silicon carbide was coated on stainless-steel wire and used as a solid-phase microextraction coating, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were employed as model analytes. Using gas chromatography, some important factors that affect the extraction efficiency were optimized one by one, and an analytical method was established. The analytical method showed wide linear ranges (0.1-30, 0.03-30, and 0.01-30 μg/L) with satisfactory correlation coefficients (0.9922-0.9966) and low detection limits (0.003-0.03 μg/L). To investigate the practical application of the method, rainwater and cigarette ash aqueous solution were collected as real samples for extraction and detection. The results indicate that silicon carbide has excellent application in the field of solid-phase microextraction.

Size and Surface Chemistry Tuning of Silicon Carbide Nanoparticles

Chemical transformations on the surface of commercially available 3C-SiC nanoparticles were studied by means of FTIR, XPS, and temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry methods. Thermal oxidation of SiC NPs resulted in the formation of a hydroxylated SiO₂ surface layer with C₃Si-H and CH_x groups over the SiO₂/SiC interface. Controllable oxidation followed by oxide dissolution in HF or KOH solution allowed the SiC NPs size tuning from 17 to 9 nm. Oxide-free SiC surfaces, terminated by hydroxyls and C₃Si-H groups, can be efficiently functionalized by alkenes under thermal or photochemical initiation. Treatment of SiC NPs by HF/HNO₃ mixture produces a carbon-enriched surface layer with carboxylic acid groups susceptible to amide chemistry functionalization. The hydroxylated, carboxylated, and aminated SiC NPs form stable aqueous sols.
