Abstract
Water pollution is one of serious environmental issues due to the rapid development of industrial and agricultural sectors, and clean water resources have been receiving increasing attention. Recently, more and more studies have witnessed significant development of catalysts (metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, zero-valent metal, etc.) for wastewater treatment and water purification. Sustainable and clean catalysts immobilized into chitosan-based materials (Cat@CSbMs) are considered one of the most appealing subclasses of functional materials due to their high catalytic activity, high adsorption capacities, non-toxicity and relative stability. This review provides a summary of various upgrading renewable Cat@CSbMs (such as cocatalyst, photocatalyst, and Fenton-like reagent, etc.). As for engineering applications, further researches of Cat@CSbMs should focus on treating complex wastewater containing both heavy metals and organic pollutants, as well as developing continuous flow treatment methods for industrial wastewater using Cat@CSbMs. In conclusion, this review abridges the gap between different approaches for upgrading renewable and clean Cat@CSbMs and their future applications. This will contribute to the development of cleaner and sustainable Cat@CSbMs for wastewater treatment and water purification.

Abstract
In the present work P−ZrO2CeO2ZnO nanoparticles were synthesised for the first time using phytochemical extracts from Flacourtia indica leaves and applied in the photocatalytic degradation of Congo Red in the presence of Light Emitting Diode warm white light. The photocatalytic degradation was optimized with respect to P−ZrO2CeO2ZnO nanoparticle dosage, initial Congo Red concentration, and degradation time. The optimum conditions for P−ZrO2CeO2ZnO nanoparticle synthesis was pH 9, leaves extracts of F. indica dosage 4 g 100 mL−1, Zirconia, Cerium and Zinc metal ion concentration 0.05 mg/L and metal ion to plant volume ratio of 1:4. The leaves extract dosage, pH and metal concentration had the most significant effects on the synthesis of the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles followed type III physisorption adsorption isotherms with surface area of 0.4593 m3g−1, pore size of 6.80 nm, pore volume 0.000734 cmg−13 and average nanoparticle size 0.255 nm. A degradation efficiency of 86% was achieved and the optimum degradation conditions were 0.05 g/L of P−ZrO2CeO2ZnO nanoparticle dosage, 10 mg/L initial Congo red concentration, and 250 minutes irradiation time. Data from kinetic studies showed that the degradation followed pseudo first order kinetics at low concentration, with a rate constant of 0.069 min−1. The superoxide, h+ holes and light were the main determinants of the reaction mechanisms for the degradation of Congo Red. The investigation outcomes demonstrated that P−ZrO2CeO2ZnO nanoparticles offer a high potential for photocatalytic degradation of Congo Red. The most significant factors on P−ZrO2CeO2ZnO nanoparticles synthesis were plant leaves dosage, pH and initial metal concentration. The nanoparticles exhibited high catalytic activity towards photocatalytic degradation of Congo red. Superoxide, h+ holes and light were the main determinants of the photocatalytic degradation mechanisms.

Abstract
Nanocomposites play a key role in the removal of toxic metal(loid)s from environmental water. In this study, we investigated the adsorption capability of water-soluble carboxymethyl chitosan (WSCC)-modified functionally oxidized single walled carbon nanotubes (oSWCNTs) for rapid and efficient removal of toxic Pb(ii) from water. The WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite was prepared by an acid treatment of SWCNTs followed by an ultrasonic dispersion process using WSCC as dispersant. The morphology and chemical characteristics of the WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite were further identified using various characterization techniques (i.e., transmission electron microscopy, TEM; scanning electron microscopy, SEM; Raman spectra; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS; nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm test). The efficiency of the adsorption process in batch experiments was investigated via determining various factor effects (i.e. WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite concentration, solution pH, initial Pb(ii) concentration, contact time, and reaction temperature). Kinetic results showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order, while an isotherm results study showed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models at the same time. In addition, the van't Hoff equation was used to calculate thermodynamic parameters for assessing the endothermic properties and spontaneity of the adsorption process. The WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite manifested a high adsorption capacity for Pb(ii) (113.63 mg g−1) via electrostatic interactions and ion-exchange, as its adsorption rate could reach up to 98.72%. This study, therefore, provides a novel adsorbent for the removal and detection of harmful residues (i.e. toxic metal(loid)s) from environmental water, such as industry wastewater treatment and chemical waste management. A water-dispersible WSCC–oSWCNTs nanocomposite prepared for efficient Pb(ii) uptake from water. The removal efficiency is still higher than 80% after 4 adsorption–desorption cycles, and the Pb(ii) can be adsorbed with high selectivity and stability.![]()

Abstract
A novel nanocomposite bead based on polymeric matrix of carboxymethyl cellulose and copper oxide-nickel oxide nanoparticles was synthesized, characterized, and applied for adsorptive removal of inorganic and organic contaminants at trace level of part per million (mgL-1) from aqueous sample. Carboxymethyl cellulose/copper oxide-nickel oxide (CMC/CuO-NiO) adsorbent beads were selective toward the removal of Pb(II) among other metal ions. The removal percentage of Pb(II) was more than 99% with 3 mgL-1. The waste beads after Pb (II) adsorption (Pb@CMC/CuO-NiO) and CMC/CuO-NiO nanocomposite beads were employed as adsorbents for removing of various dyes. It was found that Pb@CMC/CuO-NiO can be reused as adsorbent for the removal of Congo Red (CR), while CMC/CuO-NiO nanocomposite beads were more selective for removal of Eosin Yellow (EY) from aqueous media. The adsorption of CR and EY was optimized, and the removal percentages were 93% and 96.4%, respectively. The influence of different parameters was studied on the uptake capacity of Pb(II), CR, and EY, and lastly, the CMC/CuO-NiO beads exhibited responsive performance in relation to pH and other parameters. Thus, the prepared CMC/CuO-NiO beads were found to be a smart material which is effective and played super adsorption performance in the removal of Pb(II), CR, and EY from aqueous solution. These features make CMC/CuO-NiO beads suitable for numerous scientific and industrial applications and may be used as an alternative to high-cost commercial adsorbents.

Abstract
Dinitrosalicylic acid-functionalized chitosan, CHN-DNSA, was developed and improved the adsorption property against chromium Cr(VI) and/or Rhodamine B (RHB). Here, the disposal of wastewater bearing Cr(VI) and RHB from a complex system was ascribed to significant differences in physicochemical properties. The constructed CHN-DNSA surface charge is responsible for different interactions enabling simultaneous capture of pollutants. The excellent adsorption potency of Cr(VI) at pH 3.0 was 98.4% within a remarkable 1 h and the adsorption performance was 91.1% for RHB. The ionic strength was affected, reducing the removal % of Cr(VI) to 36.7% whereas 0.1 M NaCl meliorated the removal efficiency from 91.6 to 96.2% for RHB and from 82.3 to 89.1% for a binary system. Also, the exploited elimination process of Cr(VI) and/or RHB obeyed the 2nd model of kinetics and the Freundlich system. Good recovery, superior capacity, and synthetic approach make this protocol promising for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The inimical effects associated with heavy metals are serious concerns, particularly with respect to global health-related issues, because of their non-ecological characteristics and high toxicity. Current research in this area is focused on the synthesis of poly(acrylamide) grafted Cell@Fe3O4 nanocomposites via oxidative free radical copolymerization of the acrylamide monomer and its application for the removal of Pb(II). The hybrid material was analyzed using different analytical techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The efficacious impact of variable parameters, including contact time, pH, material dose, initial Pb(II) concentration, and the temperature, was investigated and optimized using both batch and artificial neural networks (ANN). Surface digestion of metal ions is exceedingly pH-dependent, and higher adsorption efficiencies and adsorption capacities of Pb(II) were acquired at a pH value of 5. The acquired equilibrium data were analyzed using different isotherm models, including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson models. In this investigation, the best performance was obtained using the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the material investigated via monolayer formation was determined to be 314.47 mg g-1 at 323 K, 239.74 mg g-1 at 313 K, and 100.79 mg g-1 at 303 K.

Abstract
Zirconium/titanium/chitosan (Zr/Ti/CHT) composite catalysts were synthesized by sol-gel method using different chitosan amounts (5-20 wt.%) and their activity in the photocatalytic degradation of Orange II dye was evaluated for the first time. The results were compared with Zr/Ti, Zr/CHT and Ti/CHT catalysts. The composite catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. XRD analysis revealed that the Zr/Ti/CHT composite catalyst showed high crystallinity of anatase TiO2 phase. Photocatalytic experiments showed that adding CHT into the catalyst structure increased the photocatalytic degradation under visible light irradiation. Also, the first-order reaction rate constant, kapp, was calculated using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) equation. The kapp values were found to be 0.009, 0.0013, 0.012 and 0.014 min-1 for Zr/Ti, Zr/CHT, Ti/CHT and Zr/Ti/CHT, respectively. According to stability tests, after the first cycle Orange II dye degradation was found to be 95%, while it was 37% after the fifth cycle. The results showed that the composite catalyst could be used several times for Orange II dye degradation.

Abstract
The inhibition of electrons-holes recombination and enhancement of visible light photocatalytic activity were accomplished by the synthesized TiO2/CS nanocomposites system. In this present work, the different weight ratio of TiO2 and chitosan (75:25, 50:50 and 25:75) nanocomposites were synthesized via two-step method. After that, the existing functional groups, size and structure of the nanocomposites system were characterized via FT-IR, TEM and XRD measurements. The band gap of the prepared materials and its excitation and emission spectra were elevated through UV-vis and PL analyses. Moreover, the MO and MB degradation capability of the synthesized TiO2/CS nanocomposites was optimized, and the outcomes are described in detail.
