Modern and Dedicated Methods for Producing Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Layers in Sensing Applications

Molecular imprinting (MI) is the most available and known method to produce artificial recognition sites, similar to antibodies, inside or at the surface of a polymeric material. For this reason, scholars all over the world have found MI appealing, thus developing, in this past period, various types of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) that can be applied to a wide range of applications, including catalysis, separation sciences and monitoring/diagnostic devices for chemicals, biochemicals and pharmaceuticals. For instance, the advantages brought by the use of MIPs in the sensing and analytics field refer to higher selectivity, sensitivity and low detection limits, but also to higher chemical and thermal stability as well as reusability. In light of recent literature findings, this review presents both modern and dedicated methods applied to produce MIP layers that can be integrated with existent detection systems. In this respect, the following MI methods to produce sensing layers are presented and discussed: surface polymerization, electropolymerization, sol–gel derived techniques, phase inversionand deposition of electroactive pastes/inks that include MIP particles.

Electrochemical Sensor for the Detection of 1-Hydroxypyrene Based on Composites of PAMAM-Regulated Chromium-Centered Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles and Graphene Oxide

A nanocomposite was formed by combining graphene oxide (GO) with chromium-centered metal-organic framework (Cr-MOF) nanoparticles regulated by the dendrimer polyamidoamine (PAMAM). PAMAM can successfully regulate the synthesis of Cr-MOF; in doing so, the size of Cr-MOF is reduced, its original morphology is maintained, and it has good crystallinity. A simple ultrasonication method was used to make the Cr-MOF/GO hybrid nanocomposite. Various characterization methods confirmed the successful synthesis of PAMAM/Cr-MOF/GO nanocomposites. The PAMAM/Cr-MOF/ERGO modified electrode could be used with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) to study the electrochemical behaviors of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPyr). The results indicated that the constructed PAMAM/Cr-MOF/ERGO electrochemical sensor had a significantly enhanced electrocatalytic effect on the electrochemical reduction of 1-OHPyr compared with the sensors with no PAMAM and the ERGO sensor, which could be ascribed to the synergetic effect from the high porosity of Cr-MOF and the high conductivity of ERGO, as well as the further electron transport action of the nanocomposite. Under the optimal conditions, the reduction peak current and concentration of 1-OHPyr showed a good linear relationship in the range of 0.1-1.0 and 1.0-6.0 μM, and the detection limit of 1-OHPyr was calculated to be 0.075 μM. Moreover, the PAMAM/Cr-MOF/ERGO electrochemical sensor constructed in this paper can be expected to provide some instructions for the construction of electrochemical sensing platforms and wider potential applications.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Occurrence, Electroanalysis, Challenges, and Future Outlooks

The past several decades have seen increasing concern regarding the wide distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental matrices. Primary toxicological data show PAHs' persistent characteristics and possible toxicity effects. Because of this pressing global issue, electroanalytical methods have been introduced. These methods are effective for PAH determination in environmental waters, even outclassing sophisticated analytical techniques such as chromatography, conventional spectrophotometry, fluorescence, and capillary electrophoresis. Herein, the literature published on PAHs is reviewed and discussed with special regard to PAH occurrence. Moreover, the recent developments in electrochemical sensors for PAH determination and the challenges and future outlooks in this field, are also presented.

Highly selective electrochemical nanofilm sensor for detection of carcinogenic PAHs in environmental samples

A highly sensitive sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymer film was devised for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in aquatic solutions. In this paper we report, electro-polymerisation of 4-vinyl pyridine (4VP) and target, pyrene, using cyclic voltammeter in electrolyte medium, forming the pyrene imprinted polymer. After polymerisation, the pyrene was removed from imprinted polymer using methanol to produce sensory nanofilm characterised by infrared spectrometer, optical and atomic force microscopy. The mechanism of nanofilm sensing was established using atomic models and electrochemical response by differential pulse voltammeter with the redox system of ([Fe(CN)₆]^3-/[Fe(CN)₆]^4-). The π-π interaction between pyrene and 4VP was primary cause for pyrene recognition in aqueous solutions and the model binding score for this interaction was -5.10 kcal mol^-1. The electrochemical sensor determined pyrene in the concentration range of 1 × 10^-4 - 1 ng L^-1, resulting best linear regression (r² > 0.9) and detection limit of 0.001 ng L^-1. The recovery percentage of pyrene from the nanofilm was 83-110% in water samples and the imprinting factor value was 2.67. Therefore, the novel imprinted polymer nanofilm sensor showed highest sensitivity for target pyrene in aqueous samples compared to reported sensors.

Assay of 1-hydroxypyrene via aggregation-induced quenching of the fluorescence of protamine-modified gold nanoclusters and 9-hydroxyphenanthrene-based sensitization

This work describes a method for the determination of 1-hydroxypyrene (OH-Py) via aggregation-induced quenching of the emission of protamine-coated gold nanoclusters using 9-hydroxyphenanthrene (OH-Phe) as a sensitizer to boost the emission efficiency of nanoprobe. Under optimum conditions, the drop in fluorescence intensity at excitation/emission wavelengths of 300/596 nm is proportional to the concentrations of OH-Py in the range from 1.0 to 65 nM. The relative standard deviations are 4.2, 2.4 and 1.9% (for n = 11) at concentration levels of 8.0, 32 and 48 nM of OH-Py, respectively. The detection limit is 0.3 nM which is much lower than that of some previously reported methods. The recoveries from urine samples spiked with OH-Py ranged between 94.4 and 98.8%. Graphical abstract 1-Hydroxypyrene (OH-Py) can trigger the aggregation of protamine-gold nanoclusters (PRT-AuNCs), resulting in the emission quenching of PRT-AuNCs. 9-Hydroxyphenanthrene (OH-Phe) can boost the emission efficiency of nanoprobe. Thereby, a highly sensitive assay of OH-Py was established.

Synthesis of switchable intelligent molecularly imprinted polymers with selective adsorption of ethyl carbamate and their application in electrochemical sensor analysis

A cyclodextrin aldehyde based molecularly imprinted polymer with thermally responsive Diels–Alder (DA) linkages of grafted furan-type dienes was polymerized. The synthesized DA-MIP has dienophile characteristics and the specific absorption of ethyl carbamate (EC) can be switched on or off simply by thermal adjustment to 130 °C and 60 °C, respectively. The imprinting factors (α) of the MIP and rDA-MIP to EC were 6.2 and 5.0, and the selection factors (β) were 5.2 and 4.0, respectively. The restoration of the molecular target ratio was 88%, as determined by absorption and desorption experiments. The thermal restoration ratio, determined by thermal cycling experiments, was 78%. A new electrochemical sensor was prepared using the DA-MIP and its responsiveness for detecting trace amounts of EC was investigated. The results indicate that the electrode response has good affinity and excellent specific recognition performance for template molecular chemicals.
