A Bi2WO6-based hybrid heterostructures photocatalyst with enhanced photodecomposition and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution through Z-scheme process

Simultaneous photocatalytic removal of tetracycline and hexavalent chromium by BiVO4/0.6CdS photocatalyst: Insights into the performance, evaluation, calculation and mechanism

In this study, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction on bismuth vanadium/cadmium sulfide (BiVO4/0.6CdS) was developed and evaluated for simultaneous photocatalytic removal of combined tetracycline (TC) and hexavalent chromium Cr(Ⅵ) pollution under visible light. Based on the analysis of intermediate products and theoretical calculation, the property of the intermediate products of TC degradation and the effect of built-in electric field (IEF) of composite materials on photo-generated carrier separation were illustrated. According to the experiments and evaluation results, the performance of BiVO4/0.6CdS is higher than CdS 2.83 times and 4.82 times under the visible light conditions, with the aspect of simultaneous oxidizing TC and reducing Cr(Ⅵ), respectively. The catalyst has a faster removal rate in the binary composite pollution system than the single one. Therefore, the photocatalytic degradation of TC using BiVO4/0.6CdS can reduce the toxic effect of TC on the environment. The aforementioned evaluation provides a new design strategy for Z-scheme heterojunction to simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of composite organic and inorganic pollutants.

Recent Development Strategies for Bismuth-Driven Materials in Sustainable Energy Systems and Environmental Restoration

Bismuth(Bi)-based materials have gained considerable attention in recent decades for use in a diverse range of sustainable energy and environmental applications due to their low toxicity and eco-friendliness. Bi materials are widely employed in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, exhibiting excellent catalytic and non-catalytic performance, as well as CO₂ /N₂ reduction and water treatment systems. A variety of Bi materials, including its oxides, chalcogenides, oxyhalides, bismuthates, and other composites, have been developed for understanding their physicochemical properties. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the properties of individual Bi material systems and their use in a range of applications is provided. This review highlights the implementation of novel strategies to modify Bi materials based on morphological and facet control, doping/defect inclusion, and composite/heterojunction formation. The factors affecting the development of different classes of Bi materials and how their control differs between individual Bi compounds are also described. In particular, the development process for these material systems, their mass production, and related challenges are considered. Thus, the key components in Bi compounds are compared in terms of their properties, design, and applications. Finally, the future potential and challenges associated with Bi complexes are presented as a pathway for new innovations.

Bismuth-Based Multi-Component Heterostructured Nanocatalysts for Hydrogen Generation

Developing a unique catalytic system with enhanced activity is the topmost priority in the science of H2 energy to reduce costs in large-scale applications, such as automobiles and domestic sectors. Researchers are striving to design an effective catalytic system capable of significantly accelerating H2 production efficiency through green pathways, such as photochemical, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical routes. Bi-based nanocatalysts are relatively cost-effective and environmentally benign materials which possess advanced optoelectronic properties. However, these nanocatalysts suffer back recombination reactions during photochemical and photoelectrochemical operations which impede their catalytic efficiency. However, heterojunction formation allows the separation of electron–hole pairs to avoid recombination via interfacial charge transfer. Thus, synergetic effects between the Bi-based heterostructured nanocatalysts largely improves the course of H2 generation. Here, we propose the systematic review of Bi-based heterostructured nanocatalysts, highlighting an in-depth discussion of various exceptional heterostructures, such as TiO2/BiWO6, BiWO6/Bi2S3, Bi2WO6/BiVO4, Bi2O3/Bi2WO6, ZnIn2S4/BiVO4, Bi2O3/Bi2MoO6, etc. The reviewed heterostructures exhibit excellent H2 evolution efficiency, ascribed to their higher stability, more exposed active sites, controlled morphology, and remarkable band-gap tunability. We adopted a slightly different approach for reviewing Bi-based heterostructures, compiling them according to their applicability in H2 energy and discussing challenges, prospects, and guidance to develop better and more efficient nanocatalytic systems.

Recent trends in Bi-based nanomaterials: challenges, fabrication, enhancement techniques, and environmental applications

One of the most enticing approaches to environmental restoration and energy conversion is photocatalysis powered by solar light. Traditional photocatalysts have limited practical uses due to inadequate light absorption, charge separation, and unknown reaction mechanisms. Discovering new visible-light photocatalysts and investigating their modification is crucial in photocatalysis. Bi-based photocatalytic nanomaterials have gotten much interest as they exhibit distinctive geometric shapes, flexible electronic structures, and good photocatalytic performance under visible light. They can be employed as stand-alone photocatalysts for pollution control and energy production, but they do not have optimum efficacy. As a result, their photocatalytic effectiveness has been significantly improved in the recent decades. Numerous newly created concepts and methodologies have brought significant progress in defining the fundamental features of photocatalysts, upgrading the photocatalytic ability, and understanding essential reactions of the photocatalytic process. This paper provides insights into the characteristics of Bi-based photocatalysts, making them a promising future nanomaterial for environmental remediation. The current review discusses the fabrication techniques and enhancement in Bi-based semiconductor photocatalysts. Various environmental applications, such as H₂ generation and elimination of water pollutants, are also discussed in terms of semiconductor photocatalysis. Future developments will be guided by the uses, issues, and possibilities of Bi-based photocatalysts.

Facile Fabrication of F-Doped SnO2 Nanomaterials for Improved Photocatalytic Activity

Non-metal doping introduces structural defects, which alter the metal oxide band gap, resulting in high photocatalytic performance. Herein, a F doped SnO2 was synthesized via a simple solvothermal method. Through adjusting the solvothermal time, surfactants and F doping ratio, the optimal sample was prepared. In addition, the as-prepared nano-powder was characterized and analyzed by X-Ray-Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Disperse Spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrum (FT-IR). Interestingly, the results of photocatalytic degradation showed that the degradation rate of rhodamine B (Rh B) reached 92.9% in 25 min after a 5-hour solvent heat treatment with polyethylene glycol (PEG) surfactant and F doping ratio of n(F):n(Sn) = 1:15. Through the study of photocatalytic performance, we found that F-doped SnO2 has high photocatalytic activity during a short time and its development potential in the field of photocatalysis, which provides a strong support for our further study of its practical application.

Recent advances in degradation of organic pollutant in aqueous solutions using bismuth based photocatalysts: A review

Today, a major concern associated with the environment is the water pollution occurred due to the introduction of variety of persistent organic pollutants and residual dyes from different sources (e.g., dye and dye intermediates industries, paper and pulp industries, textile industries, tannery and craft bleaching industries, pharmaceutical industries, etc.) into our natural water resources. Recently, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) by photocatalyst have garnered great attention as a new frontier promising eco-friendly and sustainable wastewater treatment technology. Utilization of the photocatalytic technology efficiently is significant for cleaner environment. Bismuth based photocatalyst have aroused widespread attention as a visible light responsive photocatalyst for waste water treatment due to their non-toxicity, low cost, modifiable morphology, and outstanding optical and chemical properties. In this review, we have dealt with the research progress on bismuth-based photocatalysts for waste water treatment. However, it seems to give limitation over pristine photocatalysts such as slow migration of charge carriers, charge carrier recombination, low visible light absorption, etc., Various bismuth based photocatalyst and its modifications via doping, heterojunction, Z-scheme etc., are discussed in detail. Further, the strategies adopted to improve the photocatalytic activity of bismuth based photocatalyst to improve the waste water treatment (mostly drugs and dyes) are critically reviewed. Also, we have discussed the bacterial inactivation by bismuth based photocatalyst. Finally, the challenges and future aspects against bismuth based photocatalyst are explored for further research.

Cocatalysts from types, preparation to applications in the field of photocatalysis

With the rapid development of society, the burden of energy and the environment is becoming more and more serious. Photocatalytic hydrogen production, the photosynthesis of organic fuel, and the photodegradation of pollutants are three effective ways to reduce these burdens using semiconductor photocatalysts. To improve the reaction efficiency of photocatalysts, a small amount of cocatalyst is often added when photocatalysts participate in the synthesis or decomposition reaction. The addition of this small amount of cocatalyst is like a finishing touch, significantly increasing the activity of the photocatalysts. However, in our common study of photocatalysis, we often pay attention to the study of photocatalysts but ignore the study of cocatalysts. Herein, we summarize the recent application research on cocatalysts in the field of photocatalysis, starting from the types, preparation methods, and reaction mechanisms among others, to remind researchers of the matters needing attention when using cocatalysts.

Gold Nanoparticle-Decorated Bi2S3 Nanorods and Nanoflowers for Photocatalytic Wastewater Treatment

Colloidal synthesis of photocatalysts with potential to overcome the drawback of low photocatalytic efficiency brought by charge recombination and narrow photo-response has been a challenge. Herein, a general and facile colloidal approach to synthesize orthorhombic phase Bi2S3 particles with rod and flower-like morphology is reported. We elucidate the formation and growth process mechanisms of these synthesized nanocrystals in detail and cooperate these Bi2S3 particles with metallic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to construct heterostructured photocatalysts. The unique properties of AuNPs featuring tunable surface plasmon resonance and large field enhancement are used to sensitize the photocatalytic activity of the Bi2S3 semiconductor particles. The morphology, structure, elemental composition, and light absorption ability of the prepared catalysts are characterized by (high-resolution) transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The catalysts exhibit high and stable photocatalytic activity for the degradation of organic pollutants demonstrated using rhodamine B and methyl orange dyes under solar light irradiation. We show that the incorporation of the AuNPs with the Bi2S3 particles increases the photocatalytic activity 1.2 to 3-fold. Radical trapping analysis indicates that the production of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals are the dominant active species responsible for the photodegradation activity. The photocatalysts exhibit good stability and recyclability.

Synthesis of TiO2 modified self-assembled honeycomb ZnO/SnO2 nanocomposites for exceptional photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol and bisphenol A

In this study, we have successfully synthesized honeycomb-like self-assembled structure of TiO₂ modified ZnO/SnO₂ nanostructure via co-precipitation method with exceptional high degradation activities for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and bisphenol A (BPA) pollutants. The as-prepared samples were calcined in tube furnace at high elevated temperature (700, 800 and 900 °C) for 1 h. Among the TiO₂ modified samples, ZST10-700 showed higher charge separation as demonstrated from surface photovoltage spectroscopy, photoluminance and electrochemical curve. Surface morphology, crystallinity, optical property and different functional groups in the samples were determined with SEM, EDX, XRD, UV-Vis DRS and FTIR, respectively. Interestingly, 72% and 58% photocatalytic degradation efficiencies were achieved with optimized ZST10-700 for 2,4-DCP and BPA, respectively. In comparison, the pure ZS-700 only showed 36% and 29% photocatalytic degradation efficiencies, respectively. The improved photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of the optimized ZST10-700 are mainly due to improved charge separation and prolonged charge lifetime. It was further verified that by increasing calcination temperature, the photocatalytic activity decreased, and this is attributed to the formation of photo-inactive phases like Zn₂SnO₄ and ZnTiO₃. We believe that this work will provide an effective strategy to construct ternary heterojunction for the elimination of pollutants.

One-Step Sublimation and Epitaxial Growth of CdS-Cd Heterogeneous Nanoparticles on S-Doped MoO2 Nanosheets for Efficient Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic H2 Generation

As a green, pollution-free, and renewable clean energy source, photocatalytic H₂ production has attracted great attention. Here, epitaxial growth of pyramidal CdS-Cd nanoparticles on S-doped MoO₂ nanosheets (CdS-Cd/S-MoO₂) was prepared by one-step co-sublimation of CdS and MoO₃. The photogenerated electrons of CdS as a photocatalyst are transferred to Cd and S-MoO₂ as co-catalysts for H₂ production, which is observed by surface photovoltage (SPV) under visible light irradiation. At last, the obtained CdS-Cd/S-MoO₂ presented an efficient photocatalytic performance under the visible light (>420 nm) with a prominent H₂ generation rate of as high as 24.98 μmol h^-1 mg^-1, which is 11 times higher than that of the CdS-Cd nanoparticles (2.26 μmol h^-1 mg^-1), and it is superior than that of the CdS (1.51 μmol h^-1 mg^-1).
