Activated Cu/Cu2O foam with Ni nanoparticles for electrocatalytic activity enhancement of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media

Infrequent Cubane-Like Chromium Sulfide Cluster with σ-Donor Ligands with Efficient Electrocatalytic Property Toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The exploitation of efficient and economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of exceeding interest in renewable clean-energy technologies. Herein, the facile solvothermal reaction of S and chromic acetate in ethylenediamine (en) achieved a novel organic hybrid chromium sulfide [Cr₄(μ₃-S)₄(en)₄(SH)₄]·0.25H₂O (1), which offers a new type of antiferromagnetic cubane-like chromium sulfide cluster with σ-donor en ligands. 1 was utilized in combination with Ni nanoparticles and porous Ni foam (NF) to fabricate a Ni/1/NF electrode as an efficient cathodic catalyst, indicating excellent electrocatalytic property toward HER.

Efficient electrocatalytic nitrate reduction in neutral medium by Cu/CoP/NF composite cathode coupled with Ir-Ru/Ti anode

In this work, a three-dimensional self-supporting copper/cobalt phosphide/nickel foam (Co/CoP/NF) composite was fabricated and employed as the cathode for electrochemical nitrate removal from surface water with the assistance of a commercial Ir-Ru/Ti anode. The experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of Cu nanoparticles on CoP nanosheets is favorable for the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction. The influences of operating parameters (pH value, current density and initial nitrate concentration) on the nitrate reduction were assessed with the presence of Cl^-. At the optimized conditions, the removal of nitrate exhibits an efficiency ca. 100% via the coupling electrochemical reduction and oxidation processes. Moreover, the nitrogen selectivity is found to be as high as 98.8% within 210 min, accompanied with a promising test endurance (>94.0% for total nitrogen (TN) and NO₃^- removal efficiencies after an electrochemical run of 24.5 h). Importantly, as for the treated actual surface water, the concentration of TN is smaller than 1.5 mg L^-1, in accordance with the limit of Ⅳ-level standard of the surface water environmental quality in China (GB 3838-2002). The efficient removal of nitrate can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Cu and CoP microparticles to enhance the reduction activity, as well as the subsequent chloride oxidation for the major intermediate of ammonium.

Unraveling the Synergy of Chemical Hydroxylation and the Physical Heterointerface upon Improving the Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics

Efficient transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have received intensive attention to energy conversion but are limited by their sluggish water dissociation and unfavorable hydrogen migration and coupling. Herein, systematic density functional theory (DFT) predicts that on representative NiO, the hydroxylation (OH^-) and heterointerface coupled with metallic Cu can respectively reduce the energy barrier of water dissociation and facilitate hydrogen spillover. Motivated by theoretical predictions, we subtly designed a delicate strategy to realize the electrochemical OH^- modification in KOH with moderate concentration (HO_M-NiO) and to channel rapid hydrogen spillover at the heterointerface of HO_M-NiO and Cu, ensuring an enhanced HER kinetic. This HO_M-NiO/Cu is systematically investigated by in situ XAS and electrochemical simulations, verifying its extraordinary merits for HER including the enhanced water dissociation, alleviated oxophilicity that is advantageous for consecutive adsorptions of water, and accelerated hydrogen spillover, thereby exhibiting superb HER activity with 33 and 310 mV overpotentials at the current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, outperforming the Pt/C. This study might provide a reasonable strategy for the functionalized design of superior electrocatalysts.

A WO3/PPy/ACF modified electrode in electrochemical system for simultaneous removal of heavy metal ion Cu2+ and organic acid

Heavy metal ions and organic acids are common pollutants in electroplating wastewater. Effective and economic treatment of such wastewater needs novel technologies. In this study, WO₃/PPy-1/ACF electrode was prepared using a hydrothermal modification method and it has large specific area (788.27 m² g^-1), high areal capacitance (2.58 F cm^-2 under 5 mA cm^-2 charge and discharge) and excellent conductivity. The modified electrode was used in an electrochemical system with activated carbon fiber felt (ACF) as counter electrode. The system simultaneously and successfully removed 97.8 % Cu²⁺ and 80.1 % citric acid (CA) from a simulated electroplating wastewater (typically 100 mg L^-1 Cu²⁺ and 800 mg L^-1 CA) in five- hour optimized operation. The influence of operating parameters (circulating inflow rate, applied voltage and influent pH) on the treatment performance was compared. There is interplay between Cu²⁺ reductive deposition and CA oxidation. The synergetic electrochemical treatment mechanism involves formation of hydrogen peroxide, free radicals, and catalytic effect of Cu species was proposed. This electrochemical system which is low-cost, easy to operate and highly efficient, may be applicable in treating acid-wash or electroplating wastewater, containing heavy-metal ions and organic acids.

Improving Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution of Ag@CN Nanocomposites by Synergistic Effects with α-Rich Proteins

A graphitic carbon nitride nanostructure has been successfully functionalized by incorporation of different silver contents and subsequent modification with an α-rich protein, namely hemoglobin. Mechanochemistry has been employed, as an efficient and sustainable procedure, for the incorporation of the protein. A complete characterization analysis has been performed following a multitechnique approach. Particularly, XPS data exhibited considerable differences in the C 1s region for the Hb/xAg@CN, ensuring the successful protein anchorage on the surface of the graphitic carbon nitride-based materials. The as-synthesized nanomaterials delivered impressive performance toward hydrogen evolution reactions with an overpotential of 79 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm² for Hb/20Ag@CN nanohybrids, which is comparable with the most efficient HER electrocatalysts reported in the literature. The outstanding HER properties were associated with the unique synergistic interactions, quantitatively measured, between AgNPs, Hb tertiary architecture, and the graphitic carbon nitride networks.
