The recyclability of alginate hydrogel particles used as a palladium catalyst support

Exploring the potential of surface-modified alginate beads for catalytic removal of environmental pollutants and hydrogen gas generation

In this study, hydrogel beads were fabricated using alginate (Algt) polymer containing dispersed nickel phthalocyanine (NTC) nanomaterial. The viscous solution was poured dropwise into a divalent Ca2+ ions, resulting in the formation of hydrogel beads known as NTC@Algt-BDs. The surface of the NTC@Algt-BDs was further modified by coating them with different types of metal ions, yielding metal-coated M+/NTC@Algt-BDs. The adsorbed metal ions i.e., Cu+2, Ag+, Ni+2, Co+2, and Fe+3 were subsequently reduced to zero-valent metal nanoparticles (M0) by NaBH4. The prepared beads were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) (XPS). Initially, M0/NTC@Algt-BDs were examined for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). Among them, the Cu0/NTC@Algt-BDs catalyst exhibited the highest reduction rate and therefore, investigated for reduction of different nitrophenols (NPs) and dyes, including 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 2,6-dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP), methyl orange (MO), potassium ferrocyanide (PFC), congo red (CR), and acridine orange (ArO). The highest reduction rates of 2.019 and 1.394 min-1 were observed for MO and 2-NP, respectively. Furthermore, the fabricated catalysts were employed for the efficient production of H2 gas by NaBH4 methanolysis. Among which the Ag0/NTC@Algt-BDs catalyst showed excellent catalytic production of H2 gas, exhibiting the lowest activation energy (Ea) of 25.169 kJ/mol at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the impact of NaBH4 amount, and catalyst dosage on the reduction of 2-NP and H2 gas production was conducted whereas the effect of temperature on methanolysis of NaBH4 for evolution of H2 gas was studied. The amount of H2 gas was confirmed by GC-TCD system. Additionally, the recyclability of the catalyst was investigated, as it garnered significant research interest.

Comparative catalytic reduction and degradation with biodegradable sodium alginate based nanocomposite: Zinc oxide/N-doped carbon nitride/sodium alginate

Sodium alginate (SA) is a biodegradable macromolecule which is used to synthesize nanocomposites and their further use as catalysis. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and nitrogen doped carbon nitride (ND-C3N4) nanoparticles are prepared using solvothermal and hydrothermal methods, respectively. ZnO/ND-C3N4/SA nanocomposites are successfully synthesized by employing in-situ polymerization. The presence of essential functional groups is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. Controlled spherical morphology for ZnO nanoparticles, with an average diameter of ∼52 nm, is shown by Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis, while rice-like grain structure with an average grain size ∼62 nm is exhibited by ND-C3N4 nanoparticles. The presence of required elements is confirmed by Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDX) analysis. The crystalline nature of nanocomposites is verified by X-ray diffraction spectroscopic (XRD) analysis. The investigation of the catalytic efficiency for degradation and reduction of various organic dyes is carried out on nanoparticles and nanocomposites. Thorough examination and comparison of parameters, such as apparent rate constant (kapp), reduction time, percentage reduction, reduced concentration and half-life, are conducted for all substrates. The nanocomposites show greater efficiency than nanoparticles in both reactions: catalytic reduction and catalytic degradation.

Palladated Cyclodextrin Nanosponge-Alginate Dual Bead as an Efficient Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes in Aqueous Solution

In this study, we present a novel composite material consisting of β-cyclodextrin nanosponge and sodium alginate, used as a support for the immobilization of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles. The composite alginate-cyclodextrin nanosponge beads were prepared, taking advantage of the 3D polymeric network and β-cyclodextrin cavity of the nanosponge. These beads exhibited excellent encapsulation capabilities for hydrophobic substrates, allowing their transfer in aqueous media. The cyclodextrin nanosponge served as a stabilizer for Pd nanoparticles and facilitated phase transfer. Additionally, the sodium alginate bead contributed to the robustness of the structure and improved the recovery and recyclability of the composite material. Comparative studies with control catalysts confirmed the beneficial effect of incorporating cyclodextrin nanosponge within alginate beads, particularly for more hydrophobic substrates. Optimization of reaction conditions revealed that employing 0.03 g of catalyst per mmol of nitroarene at 45 °C resulted in the maximum yield within 90 min. Evaluation of the substrate scope demonstrated the hydrogenation capability of various substrates with different electronic properties under the developed protocol. Notably, the nitro group was selectively reduced in substrates featuring competing functionalities. Furthermore, the recyclability and stability of the composite catalyst were confirmed, making it a promising candidate for sustainable catalysis.

Multi-Compartmentalized Cellulose Macrobead Catalysts for In Situ Organic Reaction in Aqueous Media

This study reports a promising approach to fabricate bacterial cellulose (BC)-based macrobead catalysts with improved catalytic activities and recyclability for organic reactions in aqueous media. To this end, the consecutive extrusion and gelation of BC precursor fluids is conducted using a combined micronozzle device to compartmentalize the resulting BC macrobeads in a programmed manner. The use of BCs laden with Au and Pd nanoparticles (NPs), and Fe₃ O₄ NPs led to the production of catalytically and magnetically compartmentalized BC macrobeads, respectively. Through the model reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol using NaBH₄ , it is finally demonstrated that the BC macrobead catalysts not only enhance catalytic activities while exhibiting high reaction yields (>99%) in aqueous media, but also repeatedly retrieve the products with ease in response to the applied magnetic field, enabling the establishment of a useful green catalyst platform.

Novel cellulose supported 1,2-bis(4-aminophenylthio)ethane Ni(ii) complex (NiII(BAPTE)(NO3)2-Cell) as an efficient nanocatalyst for the synthesis of spirooxindole derivatives

Cellulose was used as a support for immobilizing a Ni(ii) complex of 1,2-bis(4-aminophenylthio)ethane to prepare Ni^II(BAPTE)(NO₃)₂-Cell as a new organo–inorganic hybrid nanocatalyst. The properties of the prepared catalyst were studied using various analyses such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA and EDX. Ni^II(BAPTE)(NO₃)₂-Cell was employed as a reusable catalyst for the synthesis of spirooxindole derivatives via a three-component condensation of isatin, malononitrile and reactive methylene compounds. The nanocatalyst can be readily and quickly separated from the reaction mixture and can be reused for at least eight successive reaction cycles without a significant reduction in efficiency. The facile accessibility to the starting materials, use of green solvents and conducting the reactions in eco-friendly and cost-effective conditions have made this protocol a suitable method for preparing spirooxindole derivatives.

Recent developments in hydrogels containing copper and palladium for the catalytic reduction/degradation of organic pollutants

The elimination of toxic and hazardous contaminants from different environmental media has become a global challenge, causing researchers to focus on the treatment of pollutants. Accordingly, the elimination of inorganic and organic pollutants using sustainable, effective, and low-cost heterogeneous catalysts is considered as one of the most essential routes for this aim. Thus, many efforts have been devoted to the synthesis of novel compounds and improving their catalytic performance. Recently, palladium- and copper-based hydrogels have been used as catalysts for reduction, degradation, and decomposition reactions because they have significant features such as high mechanical strength, thermal stability, and high surface area. Herein, we summarize the progress achieved in this field, including the various methods for the synthesis of copper- and palladium-based hydrogel catalysts and their applications for environmental remediation. Moreover, palladium- and copper-based hydrogel catalysts, which have certain advantages, including high catalytic ability, reusability, easy work-up, and simple synthesis, are proposed as a new group of effective catalysts.

Alginate/Banana Waste Beads Supported Metal Nanoparticles for Efficient Water Remediation

Water pollution is considered a perilous issue that requires an immediate solution. This is largely because of the strong correlation between the global population increase and the amount of waste produced (most notably food waste). This project prompts the conversion of food waste into useful materials that can be used with sodium alginate as a catalytic support for metal nanoparticles. Sodium alginate/banana peel (Alg/BP) beads were prepared simply using an eco-friendly method. The prepared materials were modified using nanostructured materials to enhance their characteristics. Alg/BP beads were employed as adsorbents for metals that were then treated with sodium borohydride to produce MNPs@Alg/BP. Different MNPs@Alg/BP (MNPs = Ag, Ni, Co, Fe, and Cu) were used as catalysts for reducing 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH₄ to evaluate each catalyst performance in a model reaction. The results exhibited that Cu@Alg/BP was most efficient toward complete transformation of 4-NP. Therefore, Cu@Alg/BP was also used as a catalyst for the reduction of potassium ferricyanide, congo red, methyl orange (MO), and methylene blue. It was found that Cu@Alg/BP beads catalytically reduced up to 95–99% of above pollutants within a few minutes. Cu@Alg/BP beads were more selective in reducing MO among the pollutants. The catalytic activity of Cu@Alg/BP was examined by evaluating the impact of numerous parameters on MO reduction. The results are expected to provide a new strategy for the removal of inorganic and organic water contaminants based on efficient and low-cost catalysts.

Metal-organic frameworks/alginate composite beads as effective adsorbents for the removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution

Industrial waste discharge comprising heavy metals into potable water bodies induces many health hazards. This study investigates the role of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) doped alginate beads (MOFs@ABs) as potential adsorbents for Cr(VI). Effects of pH, stirring rate, temperature, initial chrome concentration, and particles dosage on Cr(VI) adsorption are studied to evaluate adsorption ability of UiO-66@ABs for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The adsorption kinetics follows pseudo second order and the equilibrium isotherm is consistent with Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of UiO-66@ABs calculated from the model conforms to the experimental results. The desorption experiment of Cr(VI) adsorbed UiO-66@ABs (82%) demonstrates satisfactory regeneration efficiency. Based on our findings and comparative controlled experiments, the superiority of UiO-66@ABs promises their potential application in Cr(VI) removal from wastewater.

Larvicidal composite alginate hydrogel combined with a Pickering emulsion of essential oil

Sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (S-CNCs) can be used to encapsulate thyme white essential oil (EO) that is volatile and immiscible with water. S-CNCs form a Pickering emulsion (PE) with EOs and the micron-scale PEs are embedded in sodium alginate (SA) to form macroscale hydrogel beads. The incorporation of PEs with SA is confirmed with FTIR, XRD, SEM and confocal microscopic characterizations and the release behavior is monitored to understand the time-dependent biological activity of the EOs. The larvicidal performance of the SA-PE composite hydrogel beads is investigated with Aedes albopictus (Skuse) larvae. The larvicidal activity is higher for SA/PE hydrogel beads prepared at 0.5 % CaCl₂ than 0.75 or 1.0 % CaCl₂ due to their higher release rate.

Processing and modification of hydrogel and its application in emerging contaminant adsorption and in catalyst immobilization: a review

Due to the wonderful property of hydrogels, they can provide a platform for a wide range of applications. Recently, there is a growing research interest in the development of potential hydrogel adsorbents in wastewater treatment due to their adsorption ability toward aqueous pollutants. It is important to prepare such a hydrogel that possesses appropriate robustness, adsorption capacity, and adsorption efficiency to meet the need of water treatment. In order to improve the property of hydrogels, much effort has been made by researchers to modify hydrogels, among which incorporating inorganic components into the polymeric networks is the most common method, which can reduce the product cost and simplify the preparation procedure. Not only can hydrogel be applied as adsorbent, but it also can be used as matrix for catalyst immobilization. In this review, the key advancement on the preparation and modification of hydrogels is discussed, with special emphasis on the introduction of inorganic materials into polymeric networks and consequential changes in the properties of mechanical strength, swelling, and adsorption. Besides, hydrogels used as adsorbents for removal of dyes and inorganic pollutants have been widely explored, but their use for adsorbing emerging contaminants from aqueous solution has not received much attention. Thus, this review is mainly focused on hydrogels' application in removing emerging contaminants by adsorption. Furthermore, hydrogels can be also applied in immobilizing catalysts, such as enzyme and photocatalyst, to remove pollutants completely and avoid secondary pollution, so their progress as catalyst matrix is overviewed.

Interactions between polystyrene particles with diameters of several tens to hundreds of micrometers at the oil-water interface

HYPOTHESIS

The charged spherical colloidal particles at the fluid-fluid interface experience considerably strong and long-ranged electrostatic and capillary interactions. The contribution of capillary force becomes more significant as the particle size increases beyond a certain limit. The relative strengths of the two competing interactions between the spherical polystyrene particles at the oil-water interface are quantified depending on their size.

EXPERIMENTS

The studied particles, obtained using the microfluidic method, have diameters of tens to hundreds of micrometers. The scaling behaviors of the commercially available colloidal particles with diameters of ~3 μm are also compared. An optical laser tweezer apparatus is used to directly or indirectly measure the interparticle force. Subsequently, the capillary force that can be attributed to the gravity-induced interface deformation and contact line undulation is calculated and compared with the measured interaction force.

FINDINGS

Regardless of the particle diameter (~3-330 μm), the measured force is observed to decay as r^-4, where r denotes the center-to-center separation, demonstrating that the dipolar electrostatic interaction is important and that the gravity-induced capillary interaction is negligible. Furthermore, numerical calculations with respect to the undulated meniscus confirm that the magnitude of capillary interaction is significantly smaller than that of the measured electrostatic interaction.

Fabrication of CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels for highly efficient catalytic reduction of organic pollutants

In this study, natural polymer material chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) with large specific surface area were used to prepare a new CS/RGO-based composite hydrogel by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as cross-linking agent. In addition, a CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was prepared by loading palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The morphologies and microstructures of the prepared hydrogels were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, TG, and BET. The catalytic performance of the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was analyzed, and the experimental results showed that the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel had good catalytic performance for degradation of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) and o-nitroaniline (2-NA). Therefore, this study has potential application prospect in wastewater treatment and provides new information for composite hydrogel design.

New functional CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels are prepared via a self-assembly process, demonstrating potential applications in catalysis as well as composite materials.
