Selective separation of heavy metal ions using amine-rich polyamide TFC membrane

Fabricated magnetic adsorption - Forward osmosis membrane hybrid system for hydroponic irrigation from rich arsenic-containing heavy metal water stream

Solidification of soluble arsenic from extremely acidic water and direct use of recovery water have been the major challenges in global water management, with the urgent need for new treatment system development. Thus, magnetic adsorption - fertilizer drawn forward osmosis (FDFO) hybrid system with a novel adsorbent and fertilizer mixture to solve the drawbacks of each process was developed with the ultimate goals of metal removal and direct reuse for hydroponic irrigation. Magnetic metal-organic framework-based adsorbent (CMM) was synthesized with various promising capabilities, i.e., wide pH range efficiency, strong pH adjustment, good stability, fast adsorption (1 h), and oxidation (40 min), high capacity (175 and 126 mg/g for As(III), As(V)), strong magnetization (75 emu/g), complete separation by a magnet, excellent interference-tolerance and reusability. In the FDFO system, a massive water volume (50 times higher than the initial draw solution with suitable nutrients for hydroponics irrigation with acceptable NaCl levels was obtained for the first time up to now. However, low As(III) rejection (50%) required the FDFO process to improve more. After integrating with magnetic adsorption, nearly 100% of As was removed. The pH of feed solutions adjusted from extremely acidic to close to neutral conditions further solidified metal by precipitation and membrane separation processes, leading to almost no detection of metals in the final draw solution. Also, favorable nutrients and excellent reusability were obtained. This hybrid process would generally offer an environmentally sustainable and high efficiency for decontaminating As-containing heavy metal water for hydroponic irrigation.

Enhanced removal performance of zero-valent iron towards heavy metal ions by assembling Fe-tannin coating

Heavy metals (HMs) pose serious threats to both human and environmental health and therefore, effective and low-cost techniques to remove HMs are urgently required. Here we report a facile Fe-tannin coating method for zero-valent iron (ZVI) including nanoparticles (nZVI) and foam (Fe_foam), and demonstrate that the generated Fe-tannin coating would remove the inherent passive iron oxide shell of ZVI and provide channels for the galvanic replacement reaction between ZVI and HM ions. Electrochemical characterizations demonstrate that the Fe core of the modified ZVI materials could be easily oxidized and transfer electrons to HM ions owing to the facile mass transport and charge transfer. In 40 min, nZVI@Fe-TA exhibits excellent performances for Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), Hg(II), Cu(II) and Cr(VI) removal, with the apparent removal rate constants of 0.083, 0.085, 0.083, 0.073, 0.092 and 0.078 min^-1, respectively. It is found that the surface area normalized rate constants of nZVI@Fe-TA are 4-7 times higher than that of nZVI@Fe₂O₃ counterpart, suggesting that the improved HM removal reactivity of nZVI@Fe-TA is derived from the surface modification. Moreover, nZVI@Fe-TA has advantages in resisting interference and in the simultaneous removal of different HM ions. Under a 30 min hydraulic retention time, Fe_foam@Fe-TA could remove 98% HMs in the successive process. For real electroplating wastewater, Fe_foam@Fe-TA exhibits excellent performance for Cr(VI) and Ni(II) removal, producing effluent of stable quality that meets local emission regulation. This study provides a facile strategy to remove the inherent passive iron oxide shell and enhance the HM removal reactivity for ZVI materials.

Removal of lead from aqueous solution using electrospun nanofibers: preparation, characterization, adsorption isotherm, and kinetic study

Lead is one of the most hazardous toxic heavy metal ions in industrial wastewater. The removal of Pb(II) from aqueous environment is an extremely essential topic due to acquiring clean water resources and its significant impact on human health. Adsorption is an effective and the most widely used method for heavy metal removal from an aqueous medium. Nanofibers have potential advantages in the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater. In this study, nanofibers based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were fabricated for the removal of lead ions from aqueous samples. Nanofibers produced by electrospinning were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) techniques. A batch system was used for the adsorption of Pb(II) ions onto cross-linked PVA (%10) and PVA (%10):MSs (%2) (Malva Sylestris L. seed biomaterial) nanofibers. The effectiveness of cross-linking was determined by the water absorbency test. The pH, adsorbent amount, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic values were thoroughly investigated in the adsorption tests. Pb(II) adsorption on the polymer was confirmed by EDX analysis. The optimum values found were a pH of 6, an adsorbent dose of 5.0 mg, and a contact time of 120 min. Lead ion concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The Freundlich models could explain the results from the adsorption data. Similar results were obtained from adsorption isotherm models, and the results were found to support each other. The adsorption capacity for PVA (10%) and PVA (10%):MSs (2%) nanofibers were found to be 444.2 mg g^-1 and 588.2 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity increases with the addition of MSs (2%) biomaterial. As a result, nanofibers can be used as effective adsorbents in the removal of Pb(II) ions. The developed methods are environmentally friendly and promising for the separation of toxic Pb(II) ions from aqueous systems, which is a major problem for environmental pollution.

Efficient Recovery of Rare Earth Elements (Pr(III) and Tm(III)) From Mining Residues Using a New Phosphorylated Hydrogel (Algal Biomass/PEI)

With the target of recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from acidic leachates, a new functionalized hydrogel was designed, based on the phosphorylation of algal/polyethyleneimine beads. The functionalization strongly increased the sorption efficiency of the raw material for Pr(III) and Tm(III). Diverse techniques were used for characterizing this new material and correlating the sorption performances and mechanisms to the physicochemical structure of the sorbent. First, the work characterized the sorption properties from synthetic solutions with the usual procedures (study of pH effect, uptake kinetics, sorption isotherms, metal desorption and sorbent recycling, and selectivity from multi-element solutions). Optimum pH was found close to 5; sorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir equation (maximum sorption capacities close to 2.14 mmol Pr g−1 and 1.57 mmol Tm g−1). Fast uptake kinetics were modeled by the pseudo-second order rate equation. The sorbent was highly selective for REEs against alkali-earth and base metals. The sorbent was remarkably stable for sorption and desorption operation (using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl2 solutions). The sorbent was successfully applied to the leachates of Egyptian ore (pug leaching) after a series of pre-treatments (precipitation steps), sorption, and elution. The selective precipitation of REEs using oxalic acid allows for the recovery of a pure REE precipitate.

Removal of As(V), Cr(VI) and Cu(II) using novel amine functionalized composite nanofiltration membranes fabricated on ceramic tubular substrate

Novel amine functionalized composite membranes were prepared over tubular ceramic substrate using facile dip-coating and cross-flow filtration approach. The two fabricated membranes, P-60S and P-60S-EDTA with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and EDTA-modified PEI as functional layers respectively, were characterized in terms of EDX, FTIR, XPS, FESEM, AFM and contact angle analyses which confirmed their stable physical and chemical structure for use in high pressure application. Clean water permeability and MWCO study revealed the superior permeability and rejection efficiency of the P-60S-EDTA compared to the P-60S membrane. Incorporation of bulky EDTA molecules in the membrane functional layer simultaneously decreased pore size and increased membrane hydrophilicity. The removal of As(V), Cr(VI) and Cu(II) heavy metals by both membranes were found to be highly pH dependent and overall rejection improved in case of P-60S-EDTA membrane [99.82% for Cu(II), 96.75% for As(V) and 97.22% for Cr(VI)]. Interestingly, rejection of As(V) and Cr(VI) was significantly improved in presence of Cu(II) due to volume resistance provided by EDTA-Cu(II) complex towards the passage of other heavy metal ions. Excellent stability of P-60S-EDTA membrane in continuous operation of 36 h in both ideal and practical water environment suggests its promising application in real field heavy metal contaminated waste water treatment.
