Promoting the suitability of graphitic carbon nitride and metal oxide nanoparticles: A review of sulfonamides photocatalytic degradation

The widespread consumption of pharmaceutical drugs and their incomplete breakdown in organisms has led to their extensive presence in aquatic environments. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics, such as sulfonamides, has contributed to the development of drug-resistant bacteria and the persistent pollution of water bodies, posing a threat to human health and the safety of the environment. Thus, it is paramount to explore remediation technologies aimed at decomposing and complete elimination of the toxic contaminants from pharmaceutical wastewater. The review aims to explore the utilization of metal-oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) and graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) in photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides from wastewater. Recent advances in oxidation techniques such as photocatalytic degradation are being exploited in the elimination of the sulfonamides from wastewater. MONP and g-C3N4 are commonly evolved nano substances with intrinsic properties. They possessed nano-scale structure, considerable porosity semi-conducting properties, responsible for decomposing wide range of water pollutants. They are widely applied for photocatalytic degradation of organic and inorganic substances which continue to evolve due to the low-cost, efficiency, less toxicity, and more environmentally friendliness of the materials. The review focuses on the current advances in the application of these materials, their efficiencies, degradation mechanisms, and recyclability in the context of sulfonamides photocatalytic degradation.

Detailed Insight into Photocatalytic Inactivation of Pathogenic Bacteria in the Presence of Visible-Light-Active Multicomponent Photocatalysts

The use of heterogeneous photocatalysis in biologically contaminated water purification processes still requires the development of materials active in visible light, preferably in the form of thin films. Herein, we report nanotube structures made of TiO2/Ag2O/Au0, TiO2/Ag2O/PtOx, TiO2/Cu2O/Au0, and TiO2/Cu2O/PtOx obtained via one-step anodic oxidation of the titanium-based alloys (Ti94Ag5Au1, Ti94Cu5Pt1, Ti94Cu5Au1, and Ti94Ag5Pt1) possessing high visible light activity in the inactivation process of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus and other pathogenic bacteria-E. coli, Clostridium sp., and K. oxytoca. In the samples made from Ti-based alloys, metal/metal oxide nanoparticles were formed, which were located on the surface and inside the walls of the NTs. The obtained results showed that oxygen species produced at the surface of irradiated photocatalysts and the presence of copper and silver species in the photoactive layers both contributed to the inactivation of bacteria. Photocatalytic inactivation of E. coli, S. aureus, and Clostridium sp. was confirmed via TEM imaging of bacterium cell destruction and the detection of CO2 as a result of bacteria cell mineralization for the most active sample. These results suggest that the membrane ruptures as a result of the attack of active oxygen species, and then, both the membrane and the contents are mineralized to CO2.

Vanadia as an electron-hole recombination inhibitor on fibrous silica-titania for selective hole oxidation of ciprofloxacin and Congo red photodegradation

Vanadia (V2O5)-incorporated fibrous silica-titania (V/FST) catalysts, which were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method followed by the impregnation of V2O5. The catalysts were then characterized using numerous techniques, including X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) analyses. The study found that varying the amount of V2O5 (1-10 wt%) had a significant impact on the physicochemical properties of the FST, which in turn improved the photodegradation efficiency of two organic compounds, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and congo red (CR). 5V/FST demonstrated the best performance in degrading 10 mg L-1 of CIP (83%) and CR (100%) at pH 3 using 0.375 g L-1 catalyst under visible light irradiation within 180 min. The highest photoactivity of 5V/FST is mainly due to higher crystallinity and the highest number of V2O5-FST interactions. Furthermore, as demonstrated by PL analysis, the 5V/FST catalyst has the most significant impact on interfacial charge transfer and reduces electron-hole recombination. The photodegradation of both contaminants follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood pseudo-first-order model, according to the kinetic study. The scavenger investigation demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals and holes dominated species in the system, indicating that the catalyst effectively generated reactive species for pollutant degradation. A possible mechanism was also identified for FST and 5V/FST. Interestingly, V2O5 acts as an electron-hole recombination inhibitor on FST for selective hole oxidation of ciprofloxacin and congo red photodegradation. Finally, the degradation efficiency of the catalyst remained relatively stable even after five cyclic experiments, indicating its potential for long-term use in environmental remediation.

Hybrid nanostructures exhibiting both photocatalytic and antibacterial activity-a review

The most vital issues of the modern world for a sustainable future are "health" and "the environment." Scientific endeavors to tackle these two major concerns for mankind need serious attention. The photocatalytic activity toward curbing environmental pollution and antibacterial performance toward a healthy society are two directions that have been emphasized for decades. Recently, materials engineering, in their nanodimension, has shown tremendous possibilities to integrate these functionalities within the same materials. In particular, hybrid nanostructures have shown magnificent prospects to combat both crucial challenges. Many researchers are separately engaged in this important field of research but the collective knowledge on this domain which can facilitate them to excel is badly missing. The present article integrates the development of different hybrid nanostructures which exhibit both photocatalytic degradations of environmental pollutants and antibacterial efficiency. Various synthesis techniques of those hybrid nanomaterials have been discussed. Hybrid nanosystems based on several successful materials have been categorically discussed for better insight into the research advancement in this direction. In particular, Ag-based, metal oxides-based, layered carbon material-based, and Mexene- and self-cleaning-based materials have been chosen for detailing their performance as anti-pollutant and antibacterial materials. Those hybrid systems along with some miscellaneous booming nanostructured materials have been discussed comprehensively with their success and limitations toward their bifunctionality as antipollutant and antibacterial agents.

Degradation of levofloxacin in wastewater by photoelectric and ultrasonic synergy with TiO2/g-C3N4@AC combined electrode

A novel particle combined electrode named TiO₂/g-C₃N₄@AC (TGCN-AC) was prepared by loading TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄ on activated carbon through gel method, which was used to degrade levofloxacin (LEF) in pharmaceutical wastewater by photoelectric process. The remarkable physicochemical features of particle electrodes were verified by using diverse characterization techniques including SEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR, BET and pH_ZPC. EIS-CV and photocurrent showed excellent electrocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis performance of particle electrodes. The photocatalytic characteristics and fluorescence properties of the particle electrode were proved by UV-vis DRS and PL spectra measurements. Combined with Tauc's plot and Mott-Schottky plots curves, the E_CB and E_VB of particle electrodes were determined. The experiments on different influence factors such as pH, ultrasonic, aeration, current density and the concentration of LEF were carried out in the photoelectric reactor. Under the conditions of pH values 3.0, 200 W ultrasonic, 8 L/min aeration, the mass ratio of g-C₃N₄ and TiO₂ is 8%, after 4.0 h of photoelectric process, about 94.76% of LEF (20 mg/L) in water was degraded. TGCN-AC also has excellent reusability. The degradation rate of LEF can still reach 71.17% after repeated use for 6 times. Scavenger studies showed that h⁺ and O^2- were the main active species. By observing the colony size of E. coli, it was proved that the LEF in the effluent had no antibacterial activity. The degradation pathways of LEF was analyzed and drawn by HPLC-MS spectra.

Antimicrobial Effectiveness of Innovative Photocatalysts: A Review

Waterborne pathogens represent one of the most widespread environmental concerns. Conventional disinfection methods, including chlorination and UV, pose several operational and environmental problems; namely, formation of potentially hazardous disinfection by-products (DBPs) and high energy consumption. Therefore, there is high demand for effective, low-cost disinfection treatments. Among advanced oxidation processes, the photocatalytic process, a form of green technology, is becoming increasingly attractive. A systematic review was carried out on the synthesis, characterization, toxicity, and antimicrobial performance of innovative engineered photocatalysts. In recent decades, various engineered photocatalysts have been developed to overcome the limits of conventional photocatalysts using different synthesis methods, and these are discussed together with the main parameters influencing the process behaviors. The potential environmental risks of engineered photocatalysts are also addressed, considering the toxicity effects presented in the literature.

One-pot hydrothermal synthesis of a double Z-scheme g-C3N4/AgI/β-AgVO3 ternary nanocomposite for efficient degradation of organic pollutants and DPC-Cr(VI) complex under visible-light irradiation

The Z-scheme photocatalytic system provides a promising way to achieve significant photodegradation efficiency. The work embodied here describes the synthesis of highly efficient double Z-scheme g-C₃N₄/AgI/β-AgVO₃ (g-CNAB) ternary nanocomposite using a one-pot hydrothermal route. The optical properties, phase structure, and morphology of the synthesized samples were investigated using UV-visible diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The transmission electron microscopy investigation revealed that synthesized composite material represents close interfacial interactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirms the presence of all the elements in the synthesized ternary nanocomposite materials. The photocatalytic performance of as-prepared photocatalysts has been systematically investigated using the photodegradation of a variety of pollutants, including Rhodamine B, Ciprofloxacin, and 1,5-diphenylcarbazide-Cr(VI) [DPC-Cr(VI)] complex under visible-light irradiation. Among all synthesized materials, such as g-C₃N₄, AgI, β-AgVO₃, and ternary nanocomposites with varying loading of β-AgVO₃ [g-CNAB_{(0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0)}], the photocatalyst g-CNAB_(1.5) nanocomposite achieved a remarkably high photocatalytic efficiency. The quenching impact of several scavengers revealed that reactive species such as superoxide anion radical (O₂^·-) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) are significant in the degradation of various contaminants. Based on the characterization and application, a plausible photocatalytic mechanism has been sketched out to determine the reaction pathways involved in the degradation of pollutants present in the aqueous medium.

Tunable TiO2-BN-Pd nanofibers by combining electrospinning and atomic layer deposition to enhance photodegradation of acetaminophen

The demand for fresh and clean water sources is increasing globally, and there is a need to develop novel routes to eliminate micropollutants and other harmful species from water. Photocatalysis is a promising alternative green technology that has shown great performance in the degradation of persistent pollutants. Titanium dioxide is the most used catalyst owing to its attractive physico-chemical properties, but this semiconductor presents limitations in the photocatalysis process due to the high band gap and the fast recombination of the photogenerated carriers. Herein, a novel photocatalyst has been developed, based on titanium dioxide nanofibers (TiO2 NFs) synthesized by electrospinning. The TiO2 NFs were coated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to grow boron nitride (BN) and palladium (Pd) on their surface. The UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements confirmed the increase of the band gap and the extension of the spectral response to the visible range. The obtained TiO2/BN/Pd nanofibers were then tested for photocatalysis, and showed a drastic increase of acetaminophen (ACT) degradation (>90%), compared to only 20% degradation obtained with pure TiO2 after 4 h of visible light irradiation. The high photocatalytic activity was attributed to the good dispersion of Pd NPs on TiO2-BN nanofibers, leading to a higher transfer of photoexcited hole carriers and a decrease of photogenerated electron-charge recombination. To confirm its reusability, recycling tests on the hybrid photocatalyst TiO2/BN/Pd have been performed, showing a good stability over 5 cycles under UV and visible light. In addition, toxicity tests as well as quenching tests were carried out to check the toxicity of the byproducts formed and to determine active species responsible for the degradation. The results presented in this work demonstrate the potential of TiO2/BN/Pd nanomaterials, and open new prospects for the preparation of tunable photocatalysts.

Modified Alginate Beads with Ethanol Extraction of Cratoxylum formosum and Polygonum odoratum for Antibacterial Activities

Bacteria contaminations in water are concerned as environmental effects including human health, so water treatment is required before use. Although using extracted plant is interesting because of their good chemical compounds for bacterial inhibitions, no study has applied the extracted plant in bead materials for disinfection in wastewater. The current research attempted to extract Cratoxylum formosum and Polygonum odoratum for the synthesis of C. formosum beads (CFB) and P. odoratum beads (POB), and their antibacterial efficiencies were investigated by agar diffusion tests, antibacterial batch tests, adsorption isotherm and kinetics, and material reusability. C. formosum and P. odoratum leaves were ethanol-extracted, and their bead materials (CFB and POB) were synthesized. Furthermore, their characterizations of surface area, chemical compositions, and chemical functional groups were investigated. For field emission scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam (FESEM-FIB) analysis, CFB and POB had spherical shapes with coarse surfaces. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) analysis of CFB and POB illustrated five main chemical compositions, which were carbon (C), oxygen (O), calcium (Ca), chlorine (Cl), and sodium (Na), whereas Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis identified seven main chemical functional groups, which were O-H, C-H, C=O, C=C, N-H, C-O, and C-Cl. Agar diffusion tests confirmed the abilities of CFB and POB to inhibit both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and batch experiments examined high antibacterial efficiencies of CFB of almost 100% on both bacterial types. The adsorption isotherm of CFB corresponded to the Freundlich model, which is related to the physiochemical adsorption process with multilayer or heterogeneous adsorption, and the adsorption kinetics of CFB was correlated to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which involved chemisorption relating to physiochemical interaction. Moreover, the desorption experiment confirmed the reusability of CFB. Therefore, CFB is a potential material to possibly apply for disinfection of wastewater.

Progress on photocatalytic semiconductor hybrids for bacterial inactivation

Due to its use of green and renewable energy and negligible bacterial resistance, photocatalytic bacterial inactivation is to be considered a promising sterilization process. Herein, we explore the relevant mechanisms of the photoinduced process on the active sites of semiconductors with an emphasis on the active sites of semiconductors, the photoexcited electron transfer, ROS-induced toxicity and interactions between semiconductors and bacteria. Pristine semiconductors such as metal oxides (TiO₂ and ZnO) have been widely reported; however, they suffer some drawbacks such as narrow optical response and high photogenerated carrier recombination. Herein, some typical modification strategies will be discussed including noble metal doping, ion doping, hybrid heterojunctions and dye sensitization. Besides, the biosafety and biocompatibility issues of semiconductor materials are also considered for the evaluation of their potential for further biomedical applications. Furthermore, 2D materials have become promising candidates in recent years due to their wide optical response to NIR light, superior antibacterial activity and favorable biocompatibility. Besides, the current research limitations and challenges are illustrated to introduce the appealing directions and design considerations for the future development of photocatalytic semiconductors for antibacterial applications.

In situ fabrication of niobium pentoxide/graphitic carbon nitride type-II heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The effective conversion of sunlight into H₂ by photocatalytic water splitting has emerged as the most promising strategy to alleviate the energy crisis. In this work, niobium pentoxide (Nb₂O₅)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) type-II heterojunctions with high photocatalytic H₂ evolution rate under both visible and simulated solar light are fabricated via a novel approach involving in situ 'hydrolysis/calcination' loading of Nb₂O₅ nanoparticles on the g-C₃N₄ surface. After the optimisation, the Nb₂O₅/g-C₃N₄ heterojunctions with 5 wt% Nb₂O₅ content delivers high H₂ evolution rates of 2.07 ± 0.03 and 6.77 ± 0.12 mmol g^-1 h^-1 under visible and simulated solar light exposure, respectively, which are 4.1 and 4.2 times superior to those of pure g-C₃N₄. According to the subsequent characterisations, the effective Nb₂O₅/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction offers sufficient contact interface, which is favourable for the efficient separation of photogenerated charges. In addition, the Nb₂O₅/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction possesses a large surface area, which contributes to the interfacial contact between photocatalyst and water. This work provides insights into the synthesis of novel g-C₃N₄-based hetero-photocatalysts with strong solar energy conversion capabilities.

Three-dimensional porous MoS2 nanobox embedded g-C3N4@TiO2 architecture for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant

Herein, a simple, highly efficient and stable MoS₂ nanobox embedded graphitic-C₃N₄@TiO₂ (g-CN@TiO₂) nanoarchitecture was synthesized by a facile solvothermal approach. The nano-hybrid photocatalyst was constructed by TiO₂ nanoparticles anchored on the surface of g-CN nanosheets. Then highly crystalline three-dimensional porous MoS₂ nanobox was homogeneously distributed on the g-CN@TiO₂ surface. The g-CN@TiO₂/MoS₂ hybrid achieved a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 97.5% for methylene blue (MB) dye pollutant under visible-light irradiant in an hour which was much better than TiO₂@MoS_2, g-CN@TiO_2, MoS_2, TiO₂ and g-CN. Furthermore, the reaction rate (k) value of g-CN@TiO₂/MoS₂ for MB dye is as high as 3.18 X 10^-2 min^-1, which is ~ 2.65 times better than those of g-CN@TiO₂ and MoS₂. This work presents a rational structure design, interfacial construction and suitable band gap strategy to synthesize advanced nano-hybrid photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutant with excellent performance and long-term stability.

Recent advances in graphite carbon nitride-based nanocomposites: structure, antibacterial properties and synergies

Bacterial infections and transmission threaten human health and well-being. Graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), a promising photocatalytic antibacterial nanomaterial, has attracted increasing attention to combat bacterial transmission, due to the outstanding stability, high efficiency and environmental sustainability of this material. However, the antibacterial efficiency of g-C₃N₄ is affected by several factors, including its specific surface area, rapid electron/hole recombination processes and optical absorption properties. To improve the efficiency of the antibacterial properties of g-C₃N₄ and extend its range of applications, various nanocomposites have been prepared and evaluated. In this review, the advances in amplifying the photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency of g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites is discussed, including different topologies, noble metal decoration, non-noble metal doping and heterojunction construction. The enhancement mechanisms and synergistic effects in g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites are highlighted. The remaining challenges and future perspectives of antibacterial g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites are also discussed.

Superior antibacterial activity of sulfur-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets dispersed by Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels & Gilg's polysaccharides-3 solution

Bacterial resistance has become a serious global health issue over the past decades due to the misuse and abuse of antibiotics. The development of effective antibacterial drugs with a new antibacterial mechanism is thus very critical. At present, there are many reports on the antibacterial properties and mechanisms of two-dimensional materials. Currently, the modification of g-C₃N₄ materials, as widely used two-dimensional materials, has become a key step in extending their potential applications in the field of antimicrobial therapy. In the present work, we prepared sulfur-doped g-C₃N₄ nanosheets (SCNNSs), which have good water dispersibility and sharp tips. The electrostatic interaction of SCNNSs with Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels & Gilg's polysaccharide-3 (THDG-3) provides a new strategy that can improve the killing efficiency of SCNNSs. In addition, THDG-3 can rapidly inhibit bacterial proliferation in the early stage of administration. Combined with the antibacterial activity of the SCNNSs, TPS/SCNNSs can inhibit bacteria for a long time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) after administration of the materials revealed that the bacterial cells were ruptured and their intracellular contents were completely separated from the cell membrane. Therefore, we speculate that the bactericidal mechanism of the TPS/SCNNSs probably involves cell membrane damage. In summary, TPS/SCNNSs achieve fast, long-term, dual-function bacteriostatic properties.
