Abstract
The renewable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) has gained a wide interest from the chemistry community as a valuable biobased platform opening the way to many applications. Despite an impressive number of publications reporting either its preparation or its functionalization, its direct use in fine chemistry, and especially in multi-component reaction (MCR), is less reported. Here, we report a complete study of the use of 5-HMF in the Hantzsch dihydropyridines synthesis. The strategy was applied to a scope of β-dicarbonyl molecules (including β-ketoesters and 1,3-diketones) in a 3-component procedure leading to a series of symmetrical 1,4-dihydropyridines derived from 5-HMF in excellent yields. The study was extended to the 4-component protocol using one equivalent of a β-ketoester and one equivalent of 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione (dimedone), which efficiently provided the corresponding unsymmetrical dihydropyridines.

Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) into 2,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) in flow reactor using water as a green solvent, has been achieved on a non-noble metal catalyst based on monodispersed CoNi alloy nanoparticles covered by a thin carbon layer. The alloyed catalyst containing CoNi (molar ratio 1 : 1) was prepared in a one-step synthesis following a hydrothermal method. Total conversion of HMF with 91 % selectivity to BHMTHF was achieved. The reaction network has been stablished, in which the carbonyl group of HMF is first reduced to alcohol giving the 2,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) with an apparent activation energy of 25 KJ/mol, and then the double bonds of the furan ring are hydrogenated (apparent Ea=31 KJ/mol). Formation of byproducts, mainly proceed from furan ring opening and ring rearrangement processes of BHMF, promoted by water. BHMTHF resulted a compound highly stable under reaction conditions. The fixed bed flow reactor was maintained operational for 65 h without observing any loss of catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract
To reduce the production cost of chemicals from renewable resources, the feedstock loading must be high and the catalyst must be of low cost and efficient. In this study, at a very short reaction time of 10 min at 125 °C, concentrated sugar solutions (20 wt %, 101 wt % on solvent) were converted to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) over a cotton gin trash (CGT)-derived sulfonated carbon catalyst in a 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF) biphasic system. We report, for the first time, that the presence of glucose either as a covalently bonded monomer in sucrose or in a mixture with fructose achieved yields of HMF up to 62 mol % compared to a value of only 39 mol % obtained with fructose on its own. In the concentrated reaction medium, glucose, fructose, and sucrose molecules produce difructose anhydrides, dimers/reversion products, and sucrose isomers. The glucose-fructose dimers formed in sucrose and glucose/fructose reaction systems play a critical role in the transformation of the sugars to a higher-than-expected HMF yield. Thus, a strategy of using cellulosic glucose, where it is partially converted to fructose content and the high sugar concentration sugar mixture is then converted to HMF, should be exploited for future biorefineries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biobased 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (5-HMF) is an important platform that offers numerous possibilities for upgrading to a range of chemical, material and fuel products. One reaction of special interest is the carboligation of 5-HMF into C12 compounds, including 5,5'-bis(hydroxymethyl)furoin (DHMF) and its subsequent oxidation to 5,5'-bis(hydroxymethyl)furil (BHMF), due to their potential applications as building blocks for polymers and hydrocarbon fuels. OBJECTIVES This study was aimed at evaluating the use of whole cells of Escherichia coli carrying recombinant Pseudomonas fluorescens benzaldehyde lyase as biocatalysts for 5-HMF carboligation, recovery of the C12 derivatives DHMF and BHMF, and testing the reactivity of the carbonyl groups for hydrazone formation for potential use as cross-linking agents in surface coatings. The effects of different parameters on the reaction were investigated to find the conditions for achieving high product yield and productivity. RESULTS The reaction with 5 g/L 5-HMF using 2 gCDW/L recombinant cells in 10% dimethyl carbonate, pH 8.0 at 30 °C resulted in DHMF yield of 81.7% (0.41 mol/mol) at 1 h, and BHMF yield of 96.7% (0.49 mol/mol) at 72 h reaction time. Fed-batch biotransformation generated a maximum DHMF concentration of 53.0 g/L (or 26.5 g DHMF/g cell catalyst) with productivity of 10.6 g/L.h, after five feeds of 20 g/L 5-HMF. Both DHMF and BHMF reacted with adipic acid dihydrazide to form hydrazone that was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. CONCLUSION The study demonstrates the potential application of recombinant E. coli cells for cost-effective production of commercially relevant products.

Novel Challenges on the Catalytic Synthesis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from Real Feedstocks. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources makes the transition towards renewable ones more urgent. For this purpose, the synthesis of strategic platform-chemicals, such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), represents a fundamental challenge for the development of a feasible bio-refinery. HMF perfectly deals with this necessity, because it can be obtained from the hexose fraction of biomass. Thanks to its high reactivity, it can be exploited for the synthesis of renewable monomers, solvents, and bio-fuels. Sustainable HMF synthesis requires the use of waste biomasses, rather than model compounds such as monosaccharides or polysaccharides, making its production more economically advantageous from an industrial perspective. However, the production of HMF from real feedstocks generally suffers from scarce selectivity, due to their complex chemical composition and HMF instability. On this basis, different strategies have been adopted to maximize the HMF yield. Under this perspective, the properties of the catalytic system, as well as the choice of a suitable solvent and the addition of an eventual pretreatment of the biomass, represent key aspects of the optimization of HMF synthesis. On this basis, the present review summarizes and critically discusses the most recent and attractive strategies for HMF production from real feedstocks, focusing on the smartest catalytic systems and the overall sustainability of the adopted reaction conditions.

Abstract
The transition from fossil resources to renewable ones represents a pressing need. The acidogenic fermentation of biomass-derived ethanol to carboxylic acids represents a novel and smart possibility, opening the way for the production of further value-added bio-products through cascade chemical approaches. In this work, the hydrogenation of commercial hexanoic acid to give 1-hexanol/hexyl hexanoate mixtures was preliminary studied in the presence of commercial rhenium catalysts (Re2O7 and 5 wt% Re/C), which resulted as mainly active and selective towards 1-hexanol. On the other hand, the use of niobium phosphate as the acid co-catalyst markedly shifted the selectivity towards hexyl hexanoate. Moreover, 5 wt% Re/C and physical mixtures of (5 wt% Re/C + niobium phosphate) were further tested for the hydrogenation of crude hexanoic acid obtained through fermentation of white grape pomace, confirming the promising performance of these catalytic systems and their recyclability. For the first time, the employment of 1-hexanol/hexyl hexanoate mixtures as a diesel blendstock was evaluated, highlighting a significant reduction of soot and CO emissions, without any significant change in the engine performance. The promising properties of these oxygenated additives are favorable for the partial replacement of traditional fossil fuels, in accordance with the short-term goals of EU countries.

Abstract
5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important bio-derived platform molecule that is generally obtained from hexoses via acid-catalyzed dehydration. It can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives, thus being an ideal candidate for fossil replacement. Both HMF oxidation and hydrogenation processes enable the synthesis of numerous chemicals, monomers for polymerization, and biofuel precursors. This Review summarizes the most recent advances in heterogeneous catalytic hydroconversion of HMF into valuable chemicals with strong focus on 2,5-bishydroxymethyl furan (BHMF), 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF). In addition, multifunctional catalytic systems that enable a tunable production of various HMF derived intermediates are discussed. Within this chemistry, the surprising impact of HMF purity on the catalytic performance, such as selectivity and activity, during its upgrading is highlighted. Lastly, the remaining challenges in the field of HMF hydroconversion to the mentioned chemicals are summarized and discussed, taking into account the knowledge gain of catalyst properties and feedstock purity.

Abstract
The hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been carried out either under single (aqueous) phase or batch multiphase (MP) conditions using mutually immiscible aqueous/hydrocarbon phases, 5 % Ru/C as a catalyst, and both with and without the use of trioctylmethyl phosphonium bis-(trifluoro methane) sulfonimide ([P8881 ][NTf2 ]) as an ionic liquid (IL). Alternatively, the hydrogenation of HMF was explored in the continuous-flow (CF) mode with the same catalyst. By changing reaction parameters, experiments were optimized towards the formation of three products: 2,5-bis(hydroxy methyl)furan (BHMF), 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 1-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (HHD), which were obtained in up to 92, 90, and 99 % selectivity, respectively, at quantitative conversion. In particular, the single (aqueous) phase reaction of HMF (0.2 m) carried out for 18 h at 60 °C under 30 bar of H2 , allowed the exclusive synthesis of BHMF from the partial (carbonyl) hydrogenation of HMF, while the MP reaction run at a higher T and p (100 °C and 50 bar) proved excellent to achieve only HHD derived from a sequence of hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis. It is worth noting that under MP conditions, the catalyst was perfectly segregated in the IL, where it could be recycled without any leaching in the aqueous/hydrocarbon phases. Finally, the hydrogenation of HMF was explored in a H-Cube® flow reactor in the presence of different solvents, such as ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, and ethanol. At 100 °C, 50 bar H2 , and a flow rate of 0.1 mL min-1 , the process was optimized towards the formation of the full hydrogenation product BHMTHF. Ethyl acetate proved the best solvent.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), one of the most important platform molecules in biorefinery, can be directly obtained from a vast diversity of biomass materials. Owing to the reactive functional groups (-CHO and -CH2 OH) in the structure, this versatile building block undertakes several transformations to provide a wealth of high value-added products. Among numerous well-established paradigms, the catalytic hydrogenation of 5-HMF towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) is of great interest because this downstream diol can be exploited in a wide range of industrial applications. Not surprisingly, incessant endeavors from both academia and industry to upgrade this catalytic process have been established over the years. The main aim of this Review was to provide a comprehensive overview on the development of heterogeneous metal catalysts for the 5-HMF-to-BHMTHF transformation. Herein, the rational design and utility of hydrogenating catalysts were elaborated in many aspects including metal types (Ni, Co, Pd, Ru, Pt, and bimetals), solid supports, preparation method, recyclability, operating conditions, and reaction regime (batch and continuous flow). In addition, the assessment of cooperative catalysts to convert carbohydrates into BHMTHF under one-pot cascade, tentative mechanism, as well as prospects and challenges for the chemo-selective hydrogenation of 5-HMF were also highlighted.

Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources is driving the research towards alternative renewable ones. Under this perspective, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents a key molecule deriving from biomass characterized by remarkable potential as platform chemical. In this work, for the first time, the hydrogenation of HMF in ethanol was selectively addressed towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) or 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) by properly tuning the reaction conditions in the presence of the same commercial catalyst (Ru/C), reaching the highest yields of 80 and 93 mol%, respectively. These diols represent not only interesting monomers but strategic precursors for two scarcely investigated ethoxylated biofuels, 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) and 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BEMTHF). Therefore, the etherification with ethanol of pure BHMF and BHMTHF and of crude BHMF, as obtained from hydrogenation step, substrates scarcely investigated in the literature, was performed with several commercial heterogeneous acid catalysts. Among them, the zeolite HZSM-5 (Si/Al=25) was the most promising system, achieving the highest BEMF yield of 74 mol%. In particular, for the first time, the synthesis of the fully hydrogenated diether BEMTHF was thoroughly studied, and a novel cascade process for the tailored conversion of HMF to the diethyl ethers BEMF and BEMTHF was proposed.

Abstract
The conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 1-hydroxy-2,5-hexanedione (HHD) represented a typical route for high-value utilization of biomass. However, this reaction was often catalyzed by the noble metal catalyst. In this manuscript, W promoted Ni/Al2O3 was prepared as a noble-metal-free catalyst for this transformation. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD, TEM, and EDS-mapping to study the influence of the introduction of W. There was an interaction between Ni and W, and strong acid sites were introduced by the addition of W. The W promoted Ni/Al2O3 showed good selectivity to HHD when used as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of HMF in water. The influences of the content of W, temperature, H2 pressure, reaction time, and acetic acid (AcOH) were studied. NiWOx/Al2O3-0.5 (mole ratio of W:Ni = 0.5) was found to be the most suitable catalyst. The high selectivity to HHD was ascribed to the acid sites introduced by W. This was proved by the fact that the selectivity to HHD was increased a lot when AcOH was added just using Ni/Al2O3 as catalysts. 59% yield of HHD was achieved on NiWOx/Al2O3-0.5 at 393 K, 4 MPa H2 reacting for 6 h, which was comparable to the noble metal catalyst, showing the potential application in the production of HHD from HMF.

Abstract
The production of methyl lactate as a degradable polymer monomer from biomass was an important topic for a sustainable society. In this manuscript, glycerol was oxidated to methyl lactate catalyzed by the combination of Au-CuO and Sn-Beta. The influence of Sn content, Sn source, and the preparation conditions for Sn-β was studied. The Au content in Au/CuO was also investigated by varying the Au content in Au/CuO. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy of pyridine adsorption, and TEM to study the role of Sn and the influence of different parameters for catalyst preparation. After the optimization of reaction parameters, the yield of methyl lactate from glycerol reached 59% at 363 K after reacting in 1.6 MPa of O2 for 6 h.
