Transforming pediatric healthcare: a decade of innovation in global hospitals (2015-2024)

BACKGROUND

As pediatric hospitals continue to grow in innovation, it is important to create a standardized metric to measure this growth and create a network to encourage further innovation. We worked to classify all pediatric hospitals on a scale of innovation with the goal of encouraging collaboration that can lead to more overall innovation.

METHODS

All pediatric hospitals worldwide were ranked on a scale of innovation from 1 to 3, with 1 being the most innovative, or "established," and 3 being the least innovative, or "nascent." This scale is based on information found on the hospital's website or in articles about the hospital with regards to their innovation. These hospitals were ranked in 2015, 2020, and between 2023 and 2024 among five different raters.

RESULTS

The number of worldwide hospitals in each category of innovation was evaluated in 2015, 2020, and 2023-2024. Between 2015 and 2024, there was a 48% decrease in the number of "nascent" hospitals, a 4.5% increase in "emerging" hospitals, and a 120% increase in "established" hospitals.

CONCLUSION

The changes that hospitals have undergone in their respective categories of innovation over the past nine years suggest an overall increase in innovation.

IMPACT

Pediatric hospitals worldwide have become more innovative over the past decade, but there is very limited literature that has assessed this trajectory at a broad level. Creating a standardized metric of innovation can promote a culture that enables less innovative hospitals to collaborate with their more innovative counterparts This metric of innovation is the first that we've seen in the literature that assesses all pediatric hospitals on a scale of innovation and tracks their progress over time.

Can environmental taxes and green-energy offer carbon-free E7 economies? An empirical analysis in the framework of COP-26

The main cause of environmental degradation is carbon emissions, which puts environmental sustainability in jeopardy. This ecological worry, the obligation for which falls on all economic actors, has not gone undetected, and so in 2021, the Glasgow Climate Pact (COP: 26) was organized, with the primary aim of decreasing global carbon emissions. Because the Post-Glasgow Agreement goals represent a significant challenge to achieving ecological responsibility, pressure is applied to the participating nations. However, earlier literature lacked sufficient investigation of factors useful for the mitigation of carbon emissions in E7 (China, Turkey, India, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico) economies. Hence, we aim to fill this research vacuum by predicting the impact of clean fuels and cooking technology availability, renewable energy, and environmental taxes on E7 economies' carbon emissions from 2000 to 2020, while taking urbanization and population expansion into account. Evaluation is done using four different cross-sectional dependence (CSD) methods, as well as unit root tests (CIPS and CADF), cointegration analysis (Westerlund and Kao), and the Driscoll-Kraay and quantile-on-quantile long-run factor estimate methods. The long-run analysis revealed from our findings that environmental tax, renewable energy, and access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking decrease carbon emission for the E7 economies. On the other hand, urbanization and population growth enhance emissions for the E7 economies. Finally, our results hold up under a variety of policy interpretations that would aid in reducing carbon emissions and their negative effects on the environment.

Compassion-A key to innovation: What promotes and what prevents innovation in organizations?

Innovation is crucial for the survival and wellbeing of organizations in volatile, rapidly changing societies. However, the role of profound human capability, compassion, and innovation has not been adequately investigated. This article sets out to explore the factors preventing and promoting innovation in organizations, asking how compassion is connected to these factors, and how compassion could boost innovation. We approach innovation as a complicated multilevel phenomenon, emerging from interactions between individuals and the work context. Our view of compassion includes both compassion and copassion-responding both to the suffering and joy of others. Our material was collected from nine focus group interviews, organized in Finland in 2017, in private, public, and third-sector organizations. The material was analyzed by two researchers, using an adapted grounded theory methodology. We found four core factors capable of either promoting or preventing innovation: (1) the strategy and structures of the organization, (2) resources, especially time, (3) working culture; and (4) the dynamics of interaction between individuals and the community. Our key conclusion, fruitful to theorizing both innovation and compassion, is that for innovation to flourish, compassion is to be cultivated throughout an organization. It is not a single variable or practice, and it is in many ways in a key position regarding innovation: the existence of it promotes innovation, but the lack of it prevents innovation. Thus, organizations aiming for innovation should seek multifaceted understanding and skills in compassion.
