Abstract
The new di- and tetranuclear Fe(III) μ-oxido complexes [Fe4(μ-O)4(PTEBIA)4](CF3SO3)4(CH3CN)2] (1a), [Fe2(μ-O)Cl2(PTEBIA)2](CF3SO3)2 (1b), and [Fe2(μ-O)(HCOO)2(PTEBIA)2](ClO4)2 (MeOH) (2) were prepared from the sulfur-containing ligand (2-((2,4-dimethylphenyl)thio)-N,N-bis ((1-methyl-benzimidazol-2-yl)methyl)ethanamine (PTEBIA). The tetrairon complex 1a features four μ-oxido bridges, while in dinuclear 1b, the sulfur moiety of the ligand occupies one of the six coordination sites of each Fe(III) ion with a long Fe-S distance of 2.814(6) Å. In 2, two Fe(III) centers are bridged by one oxido and two formate units, the latter likely formed by methanol oxidation. Complexes 1a and 1b show broad sulfur-to-iron charge transfer bands around 400–430 nm at room temperature, consistent with mononuclear structures featuring Fe-S interactions. In contrast, acetonitrile solutions of 2 display a sulfur-to-iron charge transfer band only at low temperature (228 K) upon addition of H2O2/CH3COOH, with an absorption maximum at 410 nm. Homogeneous oxidative catalytic activity was observed for 1a and 1b using H2O2 as oxidant, but with low product selectivity. High valent iron-oxo intermediates could not be detected by UV-vis spectroscopy or ESI mass spectrometry. Rather, evidence suggest preferential ligand oxidation, in line with the relatively low selectivity and catalytic activity observed in the reactions.

Abstract
Phosphoesterases hydrolyze the phosphorus oxygen bond of phosphomono-, di- or triesters and are involved in various important biological processes. Carboxylate and/or hydroxido-bridged dizinc(II) sites are a widespread structural motif in this enzyme class. Much effort has been invested to unravel the mechanistic features that provide the enormous rate accelerations observed for enzymatic phosphate ester hydrolysis and much has been learned by using simple low-molecular-weight model systems for the biological dizinc(II) sites. This review summarizes the knowledge and mechanistic understanding of phosphoesterases that has been gained from biomimetic dizinc(II) complexes, showing the power as well as the limitations of model studies.

Abstract
The first series of discrete multichromophore arrays of dibenzotetraaza[14]annulene (DBTAA), containing flexible bridges, have been synthesized in 40-46% isolated yields. The key asymmetrical intermediates, carrying two distinctly addressable functionalities (ROH vs. ROCH2-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-H and R(CH2)nBr vs. ROCH2-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-H) at the macrocycle periphery, were synthesized in moderate to high (30-78%) isolated yields. Facile synthetic protocols developed for the synthesis of discrete DBTAA arrays offer several advantages such as operational simplicity and easy post-synthetic workup that overcome the need for laborious chromatographic purification. All new compounds were characterized by microanalysis, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis, FTIR-ATR, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Structural features were briefly discussed with emphasis on several potential applications.

Abstract
A series of dinuclear metal(ii)-acetato complexes: [Ni2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)2](PF6)·3H2O (1), [Ni2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)2](ClO4)·CH3COCH3 (2), [Cu2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)(ClO4)](ClO4) (3), [Cu2(μ-L(Cl)O)(OAc)2](PF6)·H2O (4), [Zn2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)2](PF6) (5) and [Mn2(L(Cl)-O)(μ2-OAc)2](ClO4)·H2O (6), where L(Cl)O(-) = 2,6-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-4-chlorophenolate, were synthesized. The complexes were structurally characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Six-coordinate geometries with doubly bridged acetato ligands were found in Ni(ii), Zn(ii) and Mn(ii) complexes 1, 2, 5 and 6, whereas with Cu(ii) complexes a five-coordinate species was obtained with 4, and mixed five- and six-coordinate geometries with a doubly bridged dimetal core were observed in 3. The magnetic properties of complexes 1-4 and 6 were studied at variable temperatures and revealed weak to very weak antiferromagnetic interactions in 1, 2, 4 and 6 (J = -0.55 to -9.4 cm(-1)) and ferromagnetic coupling in 3 (J = 15.4 cm(-1)). These results are consistent with DFT calculations performed at the B3LYP/def2-TZVP(-f) level of theory. Under physiological conditions, the interaction of the dinculear complexes 1-5 with supercoiled plasmid ds-DNA did not show any pronounced nuclease activity, but Ni(ii) complexes 1 and 2 revealed a strong ability to unwind the supercoiled conformation of ds-DNA. The mechanistic studies performed on the interaction of the Ni(ii) complexes with DNA demonstrated the important impact of the nickel(ii) ion in the unwinding process. In combination with the DNA study, the phosphatase activity of complexes 1, 3, and 5 was examined by the phosphodiester hydrolysis of bis(2,4-dinitrophenol)phosphate (BDNPP) in the pH range of 5.5-10.5 at 25 °C. The Michaelis-Menten kinetics performed at pH 7 and 10.7 showed that catalytic efficiencies kcat/KM (kcat = catalytic rate constant, KM = substrate binding constant) decrease in the order: Ni(ii), 1 > Zn(ii), 5 > Cu(ii), 3. A similar trend was also observed with the turnover numbers at pH = 7. The results are discussed in relation to the coordination geometry and nature of the metal center as well as the steric environment imposed by the compartmental phenoxido ligand.

Abstract
Bromo-containing binuclear Schiff base copper(II) complex, Cu2L(OAc), with an alkoxo/acetato-bridged moiety was employed as a model of carboxylesterases to promote the hydrolytic cleavage of p-nitrophenyl picolinate (PNPP). Furthermore, the reactivity of a mononuclear complex (CuHL) was evaluated for comparing it with that of binuclear one. The results reveal that the as-prepared binuclear Cu2L(OAc) efficiently accelerated the hydrolysis of PNPP, giving rise to excess four orders of magnitude rate enhancement in contrast to the un-catalyzed reaction. Cu2L(OAc) represented an enzyme-like bell-shaped pH-responsive kinetic behavior. Moreover, the binuclear one is more reactive than its mononuclear analogue (CuHL) by two orders of magnitude. The total efficiency of Cu2L(OAc) is about 61-fold than that of its mononuclear analogue, CuHL. In addition, a contrast experiment reveals that binuclear Cu2L(OAc) displayed good activity in the hydrolysis of PNPP as well another active ester, i.e., S-2-benzothiazolyl 2-amino-alpha-(methoxyimino)-4-thiazolethiolacetate (AE-active ester). Noteworthyly, it was found that mononuclear one inspired more obvious rate enhancement in the hydrolysis of AE-active ester relative to PNPP hydrolysis. The estimated pK a1 of bound water on the binuclear Cu2L(OAc) using second derivative method (SDM) is relatively smaller than that for CuHL by a gap of about 0.8 pK unit, which facilitates the hydrolysis of PNPP. Four orders of magnitude rate enhancement was observed for the catalytic hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl picolinate (PNPP) by one μ-alkoxide/acetato-bridged binuclear copper(II) complex under physiological conditions. Substrate specificity of the resulting binuclear complexes was observed for the hydrolysis of PNPP and AE-active ester.

Abstract
A μ-phenoxo-bis(μ2-1,3-acetato)-bridged dicopper(ii) complex [Cu(L1)(μ-O2CMe)2][NO3] (1) has been synthesized from the perspective of modeling phosphodiesterase activity. Structural characterization was done initially with 1·3Et2O (vapour diffusion of Et2O into MeOH solution of 1; poor crystal quality) and finally with its perchlorate salt [Cu(L1)(μ-O2CMe)2][ClO4]·1.375MeCN·0.25H2O, crystallized from vapour diffusion of n-pentane into a MeCN-MeOH mixture (comparatively better crystal quality). An asymmetric unit of such a crystal contains two independent molecules of compositions [Cu(L1)(μ-O2CMe)2][ClO4] and [Cu(L1)(μ-O2CMe)2(MeCN)][ClO4] (coordinated MeCN with 0.75 occupancy), and two molecules of MeCN and H2O (each H2O molecule with 0.25 occupancy) as the solvent of crystallization. These two cations, each having five-coordinate (μ-phenoxo)bis(μ-acetato)-bridged CuII ions, differ by only the coordination environment of only one CuII ion, which has a weakly coordinated acetonitrile molecule in its sixth position. Temperature-dependent magnetic studies on 1 reveal that the copper(ii) centres are antiferromagnetically coupled with the exchange-coupling constant J = -124(1) cm-1. Theoretically calculated J = -126.51 cm-1, employing a broken-symmetry DFT approach, is in excellent agreement with the experimental value. The dicopper(ii) complex has been found to be catalytically efficient in the hydrolysis of 2-hydroxypropyl-p-nitrophenylphosphate (HPNP). Detailed kinetic experiments and solution studies (potentiometry, species distribution and ESI-MS) were performed to elucidate the reaction mechanism. DFT calculations were performed to discriminate between different possible mechanistic pathways. The free-energy barrier for HPNP hydrolysis catalyzed by 1 is comparable to that obtained from the experimentally-determined value. The involvement of non-covalent (hydrogen-bonding) interaction has also been probed by DFT calculations. The activity of 1 is found to be the highest, compared to the structurally-characterized Mn, Co, Ni and Zn complexes of L1(-) reported earlier, under identical experimental conditions, in which each metal centre is six-coordinate.

Abstract
High stability of the complexes formed at physiological pH is one of the basic requisites that a good iron chelator must possess. At the same time the chelating agent must be selective toward iron, i.e., the stability of iron complexes must be significantly higher than that of the complexes formed with essential metal ions, in order that these last ones do not perturb iron chelation. In the frame of our research on iron chelators we have designed and synthesized a series of tetradentate derivatives of kojic acid, and examined their binding properties toward Fe(3+) and Al(3+). In this paper, for a characterization of the behavior of the proposed iron chelating agents in biological fluids, their complex formation equilibria with copper(II) and zinc(II) ions have been fully characterized together with a speciation study, showing the degree at which the iron chelators interfere with the homeostatic equilibria of these two essential metal ions.

Abstract
Identifying the active nucleophile in hydrolysis reactions catalyzed by binuclear hydrolases is a recurrent problem and a matter of intense debate. We report on the phosphate ester hydrolysis by a Fe(III)Fe(II) complex of a binucleating ligand. This complex presents activities in the range of those observed for similar biomimetic compounds in the literature. The specific electronic properties of the Fe(III)Fe(II) complex allowed us to use (1)H NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopies to investigate the nature of the various species present in the solution in the pH range of 5-10. Both techniques showed that the hydrolysis activity is associated to a μ-hydroxido Fe(III)Fe(II) species. Further (1)H NMR experiments show that binding of anions or the substrate changes this bonding mode suggesting that a terminal hydroxide is the likely nucleophile in these hydrolysis reactions. This view is further supported by the structure determination of the hydrolysis product.
