Abstract
1,4-naphthoquinones hydroxyderivatives belong to an important class of natural products and have been known as a favored scaffold in medicinal chemistry due to their multiple biological properties. Juglone is one of the most important 1,4-naphthoquinone extracted from juglandaceae family showing a good antibacterial activity. In this study, we report the synthesis of aminojuglone derivatives through Michael addition reaction using Cerium (III) chloride heptahydrate (CeCl3·7H2O) as catalyst. The synthesized aminojuglone derivatives were evaluated for their antibacterial properties against sensitive, clinical resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Compound 3c showed a good antibacterial activity similar to cloxacillin (2 µg/mL) against the clinically resistant S.aureus. The antibiotic adjuvant activity of compounds was evaluated in combination with three clinically use antibiotics. The combination of compounds 3a, 3b, 3e, 3 h-3 l, 3n and 3o with cloxacillin showed remarkable adjuvant activity against clinically resistant S. aureus (66-fold potentiation of cloxacillin activity). 3e is the only compound consistent with the concept of antibiotic adjuvant, presenting insufficient antibacterial activity (MIC > 128 µg/mL) and potentiate the activity of cloxacillin (66-fold) with synergistic effect. A structural characterization of 3e was carried out for the first time using X-ray diffraction technic. Moreover, compound 3e did not show a cytotoxic activity on sheep red blood cells.

Evaluation of isoeugenol in inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus efflux pumps and their toxicity using Drosophila melanogaster model. Life Sci 2021; 285:119940. Abstract
The Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is a pathogen considered opportunistic and that has been acquiring resistance to several classes of antibiotics, mainly due to the synthesis of efflux pumps, which are proteins that expel these drugs intracellularly, reducing their effectiveness. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of isoeugenol to inhibit S. aureus efflux pumps and to determine its toxicity against a eukaryotic model (Drosophila melanogaster). IS-58, K2068 and K4414 S. aureus strains were used in the study. Isoeugenol minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and antibiotic modulation were evaluated in efflux pump inhibitory tests as well as in ethidium bromide (EtBr) assays. Toxicity tests against D. melanogaster assessed mortality and negative geotaxis. Isoeugenol obtained a relevant MIC result and a synergism was observed when isoeugenol was associated with the antibiotics, mainly with ciprofloxacin. Isoeugenol was able to affect all three efflux pumps tested, especially in strain K4414. The mortality of D. melanogaster caused by isoeugenol administration started after 12 h of exposure, being volume dependent and having an LC50 of 81.69 μL/L. In the negative geotaxis test, a statistical difference was observed after 24h of exposure compared to the control, demonstrating that damage to the locomotor apparatus had occurred. Based on the results, isoeugenol is a putative efflux pump inhibitor, becoming an alternative in blocking these proteins, and demonstrated acute toxicity against D. melanogaster.

Abstract
Organotin compounds are applied in several industrial reactions and can present antifungal and antibacterial activities. Incorrect handling and storage practices of biodiesel and diesel-biodiesel blends can lead to microbial development, impacting its final quality. Concerning this problem, this work investigated the antimicrobial action of two organotin catalysts used in biodiesel production with four isolated microroorganisms (Bacillus pumilus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudallescheria boydii, and Aureobasidium pullulans) and a pool of microorganisms (ASTM E1259 standard practice). Samples of soybean biodiesel with different concentrations of dibutyl tin dilaurate (catalyst 1) and di-n-butyl-oxo-stannane (catalyst 2) were prepared and added of mineral medium. The pool of microorganisms was inoculated and incubated at 30 °C and final biomass was weighted after 14 days. Thereafter, soybean biodiesel with catalyst 2 was used. Fungal biomass was weighted, and plate count was used to assess bacterial growth. Results show that catalysts 1 and 2 presented no inhibitory activity on the pool of microorganisms evaluated. A slight inhibitory activity was observed for B. pumilus and A. pullulans growth, but not for P. boydii, P. aeruginosa, or the pool of microorganisms. All experiment exhibited acidification higher than sterile control. Infrared analysis show less microbiological degradation products in the tin-protected fuel with ASTM inoculum. These results suggest that these tin-based catalysts show no toxic effect on native microbial population and a slight effect on some isolated microbial population in laboratory scale and for the first time shows that these organotin compounds can be employed safely as biodiesel catalyst. Abstract
Significant attention has been given to organotin(IV) dithiocabamate compounds in recent times. This is due to their ability to stabilize specific stereochemistry in their complexes, and their diverse application in agriculture, biology, catalysis and as single source precursors for tin sulfide nanoparticles. These complexes have good coordination chemistry, stability and diverse molecular structures which, thus, prompt their wide range of biological activities. Their unique stereo-electronic properties underline their relevance in the area of medicinal chemistry. Organotin(IV) dithiocabamate compounds owe their functionalities and usefulness to the individual properties of the organotin(IV) and the dithiocarbamate moieties present within the molecule. These individual properties create a synergy of action in the hybrid complex, prompting an enhanced biological activity. In this review, we discuss the chemistry of organotin(IV) dithiocarbamate complexes that accounts for their relevance in biology and medicine.
