Abstract
The ectoparasitoid beetle, Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae), has been widely used as a biological control agent for many cerambycid beetles in China, Korea, and Japan. However, much less is known about its phototactic behavior to visual stimuli. In this paper, the phototactic behavioral response of D. helophoroides to 27 monochromatic lights and to nine illumination intensities of the most attractive light was evaluated using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources. The results showed that in dual choice between darkness and individual LED light, D. helophoroides adults exhibited a positively phototactic response to all wavelengths ranging from 300 to 860 nm. The near-infrared light (NIR, ranging from 700 to 760 nm) elicited stronger phototactic behavioral response, showing a preference for NIR wavelengths light. In paired choice among four preferred NIR lights, D. helophoroides adults displayed a significantly more favorable response to NIR light at 700 nm. Furthermore, the beetles expressed varying levels of sensitivity to illumination intensities from 1 to 600 lux under NIR light at 700 nm. The phototactic response was strongest at 7 lux and a statistically significant downward trend was found with increasing or decreasing the illumination intensities. These findings clearly demonstrate that D. helophoroides is a positively phototactic insect and its phototactic behavior is significantly influenced by light wavelength and illumination intensity, among which NIR light with peak wavelength at 700 nm and an intensity at 7 lux are most suitable in attracting D. helophoroides adults.

Abstract
Aversive learning was applied to affect the phototactic behaviour of the marbled crayfish. Animals initially showed negative phototaxis to white light and positive taxis to blue light. Using an aversive learning paradigm, we investigated the plasticity of innate behaviour following operant conditioning. The initial rate of choosing a blue-lit exit was analysed by a dual choice experiment between blue-lit and white-lit exits in pre-test conditions. During training, electrical shocks were applied to the animals when they oriented to the blue-lit exit. Memory tests were given to analyse the orientation rate to the blue-lit exit in trials 1 and 24 h after training and these rates were compared with the pre-test. In general, animals avoided the blue-lit exit in the memory tests. When training was carried out three times, the long-term memory was retained for at least 48 h, although a single bout of training was also enough to form a long-term memory. Cooling animals at 4°C or injection of cycloheximide immediately after training altered the formation of long-term memory, but had no effect on short-term memory formation. Administration of the adenylate cyclase inhibitor SQ22536, the PKA inhibitor H89 or the CREB inhibitor KG-501 immediately after training also blocked the formation of long-term memory, but had no effect on short-term memory formation. Thus, our pharmacological behavioural analyses showed that new protein synthesis was necessary to form long-term memories and that the cAMP/PKA/CREB pathway is the main signal cascade for long-term memory formation in the marbled crayfish.

Abstract
Phototactic behaviours are observed from prokaryotes to amphibians and are a basic form of orientation. We showed that the marbled crayfish displays phototaxis in which the behavioural response reversed from negative to positive depending on external light conditions. Animals reared in a 12-L/12-D light cycle showed negative phototaxis during daytime and positive phototaxis during night-time. Animals reared under constant light conditioning showed negative phototaxis during day- and night-time, while animals reared under constant dark conditioning showed positive phototaxis during day- and night-time. Injection of serotonin leads to a reversal of negative to positive phototaxis in both light/dark-reared and light/light-reared animals while injection of dopamine induced reversed negative phototaxis in dark/dark-reared animals. Four hours of dark adaptation were enough for light/dark-reared animals to reverse phototaxis from negative to positive. Injection of a serotonin 5HT1 receptor antagonist blocked the reverse phototaxis while serotonin 5HT2 receptor antagonists had no effects. Similarly, dark/dark-reared animals reversed to showing negative phototaxis after 4 h of light adaptation. Injection of a dopamine DA1 receptor antagonist blocked this reverse phototaxis, while dopamine DA2 receptor antagonists had no effects. Injection of a cAMP analogue into light/dark-reared animals blocked reverse phototaxis after dark adaptation, while adenylate cyclase inhibitor in dark/dark-reared animals blocked reverse phototaxis after light adaptation. These results strongly suggest that serotonin mediates positive phototaxis owing to decreased cAMP levels, while dopamine-mediated negative phototaxis occurs due to increased cAMP levels. Supporting this, the ratio of serotonin to dopamine in the brain was much higher in dark/dark-reared than light/dark-reared animals.

Abstract
In social insects, the maintenance of genetic colony integrity requires resident workers to recognize any intruder with a reproductive potential and to behave appropriately to minimize fitness costs. In this study, our objective was to identify the relative contribution of the behavioral patterns and chemical cues of intruders with different fertility status on their likelihood of being accepted in monogynous colonies. Using the ponerine ant Odontomachus hastatus as a model organism, we introduced non-nestmate workers, founding queens and heterospecific workers on intact nests in the field. We demonstrated that resident workers were more aggressive toward founding queens than toward non-nestmates workers originating from the same or a distant population. Lab experiments showed that the patterns of aggression did not differ substantially between chilled and live ants, which suggests that chemical cues alone allow caste discrimination. However, the absence of behavioral cues produced more variable results in the outcome of interactions. We also showed that resident workers readily accepted non-nestmate mature queens. The analysis of cuticular profiles revealed that individuals belonging to different castes and fertility status have contrasted chemical signatures. Overall, our study revealed that workers exhibit a graded behavioral response depending on the reproductive status of intruders. We discussed the observed variation in the extent of aggression in relation to the potential fitness costs associated with acceptance or rejection error of individuals differing in fertility status.

Abstract
In ants, mating and colony founding are critical steps in the life of ant queens. Outside of their nests, young queens are exposed to intense predation. Therefore, they are expected to have evolved behavior to accurately and quickly locate a nesting place. However, data on the early life history of female reproductives are still lacking. Leptothorax gredleri is a suitable model organism to study the behavior of young queens. Reproductives can be reared under artificial conditions and readily mate in the laboratory. After mating, L. gredleri queens have the options to found solitarily, seek adoption into another colony, or return into their natal nest. In this study, we investigated the decision-making processes of female sexuals before and after mating. In particular, we tested whether female sexuals use chemical cues to find their way back to the nest, studied if they prefer their own nest over other nesting sites and followed the adoption dynamics of mated queens over 8 weeks (plus hibernation and spring). We showed that female sexuals and freshly mated queens spent more time on substrate previously used by workers from their own colony and from another colony than on a blank substrate. This discriminatory capability of queens appears to be lost in old, reproductive queens. Nest choice experiments showed that female sexuals and freshly mated queens can distinguish their own nest while old mated queens do not. When reintroduced in their maternal colony, young queens were readily adopted, but a few weeks later aggression against young queens led to their emigration from the maternal nest and eventually also death.

Abstract
Both mating and reproduction strongly affect the physiology of insect females. In the ant Cardiocondyla obscurior, a comparison among virgin queens, mated queens, and queens mated with sterilized males ("sham-mated") allows to separate the different effects of mating and egg laying. Here, we investigate whether and how different mating status is reflected in the cuticular lipid profiles of queens, i.e., the blend of chemicals that is thought to signal a queen's fertility. Surprisingly, discriminant analyses failed to reliably distinguish among virgin, mated, and sham-mated queens. A generalized linear model on individual substances showed only very subtle differences. While mating appeared to be positively associated with the proportions of 3-MeC(25,) 11-/13-MeC(27), 5-MeC(27), 3-MeC(27), and 12-/14-MeC(28) and negatively with C(27:1), fecundity was negatively associated with C(29:1), C(31:1), and a sterol derivative. We discuss these results in the light of the special life history of C. obscurior, with completely sterile workers and low egg laying rates in queens.
