Does omega-3 have a protective effect on the rat adrenal gland exposed to 900 MHz electromagnetic fields?

An evaluation of the effects of glabridin and dexamethasone in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis: The role of BKCa channels

Pulmonary fibrosis is a refractory entity with a progressive course and no effective therapeutic options. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential involvement of both glabridin and dexamethasone (Dex) in inflammatory and fibrotic responses in a bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis model. The role of Ca+2-activated K+ channels (BKCa) in the anti-inflammatory effects of glabridin was also examined. Adult female Wistar rats were divided into six groups: saline control, BLM, BLM+Gla (BLM+glabridin), BLM+IbTX+Gla (BLM+iberiotoxin+Gla, BKCa channel blocker), BLM+Dex, and BLM+Veh (BLM+dimethylsulfoxide). Inflammatory cell count values, and interleukin (IL)- 6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in order to measure fibrosis and the extent of tissue damage, in addition to stereological, immunohistochemical and histopathological examinations. Whole-body plethysmography was used to evaluate pulmonary function. Treatments with glabridin and Dex significantly reduced pathological injury and fibrosis in lung tissue, levels of TNF-α and IL-6 increased by BLM, oxidative stress, and fibrillin-1 scoring. Glabridin and Dex also reversed the increases observed in neutrophil, lymphocyte, and macrophage counts in BAL fluid induced by BLM. Glabridin and Dex were found to ameliorate the abnormal course of PIF, PEF, EV, TV, f, and Penh values caused by BLM. Our findings suggest that glabridin and Dex may exert anti-fibrotic effects by suppressing oxidative stress and inhibiting the inflammatory response, and that glabridin may improve pulmonary function through activation of BKCa channels. Both glabridin and Dex may therefore be of therapeutic use in pulmonary fibrosis.

Experimental envenomation with honeybee venom melittin and phospholipase A2 induced multiple ultrastructural changes in adrenocortical mitochondria

Bee stings represent a public health subject, but the mechanisms involved in bee venom toxicity are not yet fully understood. To evaluate the reactions of adrenocortical cells, through which organisms respond to stress, two honeybee venom components: melittin (Mlt) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) were tested as potential chemical stressors. Modifications were investigated with transmission electron microscopy and microanalysis. A single dose of Mlt (31 mg/kg) or PLA2 (9.3 mg/kg) was injected in rats of groups ML and PL; daily doses of Mlt (350 μg/kg) or PLA2 (105 μg/kg) were injected 30 days in rats of groups M30 and P30. Adrenocortical cells in ML group showed ultrastructural degenerative alterations of nuclei, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria that exhibited lipid inclusions and mitochondrial cristae (MC) re-organized into mono- or multimembrane large vesicles, and whorls of membranes. Many MC were degenerated. In the M30 group, similar ultrastructural changes, but of lower amplitude were noted; lipid cytosolic droplets were heterogenous. MC diameters in Mlt groups (melittin treated groups) were significantly higher than in control (C) group. In PL group, mitochondria contained large lipid inclusions, vesicular MC of different sizes and multiple membranes, and debris, or whorl structures. In P30 group MC were tubular with increased diameters. In both PLA2 groups (PLA2 treated groups) MC were significantly larger than in C group. We concluded that Mlt and PLA2 were powerful stressors, toxic at the tested doses, cellular reactions concerning in all groups mainly mitochondria, but also other cellular compartments. Apart from degenerative regression of MC, the rearrangement of tubular MC occurred into one or multiple large multimembrane vesicular MC. Reactions to the high doses were more pronounced, with the highest amplitude in ML group, and the lowest in P30 group.

Improvement of several stress response and sleep quality hormones in men and women after sleeping in a bed that protects against electromagnetic fields

BACKGROUND

The electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by the technologies affect the homeostatic systems (nervous, endocrine, and immune systems) and consequently the health. In a previous work, we observed that men and women, after 2 months of using a bed with a registered HOGO system, that prevents and drain EMFs, improved their immunity, redox and inflammatory states and rejuvenated their rate of aging or biological age. Since, EMFs can act as a chronic stressor stimulus, and affect the sleep quality. The objective of this work was to study in men and women (23-73 years old) the effect of sleeping for 2 months on that bed in the blood concentrations of several hormones related to stress response and sleep quality as well as to corroborate the rejuvenation of their biological age.

METHODS

In 18 men and women, plasma concentration of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine), serotonin, oxytocin and melatonin were analyzed before and after 2 months of using the HOGO beds. A group of 10 people was used as placebo control. In another cohort of 25 men (20 experimental and 5 placebo), the effects of rest on the HOGO system on the concentration of cortisol and testosterone in plasma were studied. In all these volunteers, the biological age was analyzed using the Immunity Clock model.

RESULTS

There is a significant increase in plasma concentration of DHEA, norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin, and melatonin as well as in testosterone, after resting for 2 months in that bed with the EMFs avoiding system. In addition, decreases in Cortisol/DHEA and Testosterone/cortisol ratio and plasma dopamine concentration were observed. No differences were found in placebo groups. In all participants that slept on HOGO beds, the biological age was reduced.

CONCLUSIONS

Sleeping in a bed that isolates from EMFs and drain them can be a possible strategy to improve the secretion of hormones related to a better response to stress and sleep quality, which means a better endocrine system, and consequently better homeostasis and maintenance of health. This fact was confirmed with the slowdown in the rate of aging checked with a rejuvenation of the biological age.
