Tribological behaviour of unveneered and veneered lithium disilicate dental material

Optimized 3D printed zirconia-reinforced leucite with antibacterial coating for dental applications

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to produce by robocasting leucite/zirconia pieces with suitable mechanical and tribological performance, convenient aesthetics, and antibacterial properties to be used in dental crown replacement.

METHODS

Leucite pastes reinforced with 12.5%, 25%, and 37.5% wt. ZrO2 nanoparticles were prepared and used to print samples that after sintering were characterized in terms of density, shrinkage, morphology, porosity, mechanical and tribological properties and translucency. A coating of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (KI) was applied over the most promising material. The material's antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity were assessed.

RESULTS

It was found that the increase of ZrO2 reinforcement up to 25% enhanced both microhardness and fracture toughness of the sintered composite. However, for a superior content of ZrO2, the increase of the porosity negatively affected the mechanical behaviour of the composite. Moreover, the composite with 25% ZrO2 exhibited neglectable wear in chewing simulator tests and induced the lowest wear on the antagonist dental cusps. Although this composite exhibited lower translucency than human teeth, it was three times higher than the ZrO2 glazed material. Coating this composite material with SDF+KI conferred antibacterial properties without inducing cytotoxicity.

SIGNIFICANCE

Robocasting of leucite reinforced with 25% ZrO2 led to best results. The obtained material revealed superior optical properties and tribomechanical behaviour compared to glazed ZrO2 (that is a common option in dental practice). Moreover, the application of SDF+KI coating impaired S. aureus proliferation, which anticipates its potential benefit for preventing pathogenic bacterial complications associated with prosthetic crown placement.

Gastric acid challenge of lithium disilicate-reinforced glass-ceramics and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic after polishing and glazing-impact on surface properties

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the impact of simulated gastric acid on the surface properties of lithium disilicate-reinforced glass-ceramics and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic after certain polishing and glazing procedures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four different types of square-shaped specimens (10 × 10 × 2 mm3, n = 13) were manufactured: lithium disilicate-reinforced glass-ceramic milled and polished (LDS-P); milled, polished, and glazed (LDS-PG); milled, glazed, and no polishing (LDS-G); and milled and polished zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic (ZR-LS). Specimens were immersed in hydrochloride acid (HCl 0.06 M, pH 1.2) to simulate gastric acid irritation and stored in the acid for 96 h in 37 °C. Specimen weight, surface gloss, Vickers surface microhardness and surface roughness (Ra, Rq, with optical profilometer), and surface roughness on nanometer level (Sq, Sal, Sq/Sal, Sdr, Sds with atomic force microscope) were measured before and after the acid immersion.

RESULTS

ZR-LS specimens lost significantly more weight after acid immersion (p = 0.001), also surface microhardness of ZR-LS was significantly reduced (p = 0.001). LDS-G and LDS-PG showed significantly lower surface roughness (Sa, Sq) values compared to LDS-P before (p ≤ 0.99) and after (p ≤ 0.99) acid immersion and ZR-LS after acid immersion (p ≤ 0.99).

CONCLUSIONS

Gastric acid challenge affects the surface properties of lithium disilicate-reinforced glass-ceramic and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic. Glazing layer provides lower surface roughness, and the glazed surface tends to smoothen after the gastric acid challenge.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Surface finish of lithium disilicate-reinforced glass-ceramic and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic has a clear impact on material's surface properties. Gastric acidic challenge changes surface properties but glazing seems to function as a protective barrier. Nevertheless, also glazing tends to smoothen after heavy gastric acid challenge. Glazing can be highly recommended to all glass-ceramic restorations but especially in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and eating disorders like bulimia nervosa.

Effect of staining layer on roughness after progressive wear of monolithic ceramics

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to evaluate staining layer behavior applied to high-translucency zirconia (YZHT), feldspathic ceramics (FD), and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) surfaces against different antagonists.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Monolithic ceramic discs (n = 120) (ø 12 mm; thickness, 1.2 mm; ISO 6872) were obtained, 30 from YZHT and FD, and 60 from ZLS CAD/CAM blocks (staining layer applied before or after the crystallization procedure). The specimens were divided into 12 subgroups (n = 10) according to the antagonists: steatite, polymer-infiltrated ceramic, or zirconia. Mechanical cycling (1.5 × 104  cycles; 15 N; horizontal displacement, 6 mm; 1.7 Hz) and flexural strength tests (1 mm/min-1000 kg cell) were performed. The differences between final and initial roughnesses (Ra, Rz, and Rsm), the mass loss, and the flexural strength data were individually analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The roughnesses of all ceramics did not present a statistically significant difference before wear simulation: Ra (p = 0.3348), Rz (p = 0.5590), and Rsm (p = 0.5330). After the wear simulation, the Ra parameter was not affected by an interaction between ceramic and antagonist (p = 0.595). The Rz and Rsm parameters were affected only by the antagonist pistons (both, p = 0.000). The ceramics used in this study showed statistically significant differences in mass loss after the wear test (p < 0.0001). The additional firing (2 steps) of the ZLS2 led to a higher lost mass quantity.

CONCLUSION

All ceramics presented similar initial roughnesses and similar roughnesses after the wear simulation. The zirconia antagonist showed better performance against ceramics with high crystalline content.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

It is clear that restorative materials must be carefully selected by dental practitioners according to indications, properties, and antagonists. The steatite antagonist, that is, an enamel analog, showed better performance against vitreous ceramics, while the zirconia antagonist showed better performance against ceramics with high crystalline content. Wear affects the surface roughnesses of the ceramics. Additional firing for the staining of the zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic led to a greater loss of mass.

Effect of roughness and acidic medium on wear behavior of dental resin composite

Background

The aim of the study was to investigate whether the citric acid and rough surface have a synergistic effect leading to severe wear behavior of resin composite.

Materials and methods

Disk-shaped (Ø15 × 1.5 mm) specimens of resin composite (n = 12) with different initial roughness were prepared. Reciprocating ball-on-flat wear tests were performed under distilled water and citric acid (pH = 5.5) respectively. The coefficient of friction (COF), wear volume loss, and duration of the running-in period were quantified to assess the wear performance. And the values were analyzed with one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). Regression analysis was applied to examine the influence of Ra values and mediums on the wear data. The wear morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and a 3D profilometer.

Results

The average COF was higher in distilled water than in citric acid but was independent of the surface roughness. For the composite, the volume loss of worn area and running-in period increased with surface roughness when tested under distilled water. However, these increasing trends were not found in citric acid. All specimens exhibited mild wear behavior with low COF and less superficial abrasion in acidic medium.

Conclusions

The effect of initial roughness on wear behavior depends on the medium. In distilled water, resin composites with high initial roughness exhibit a longer running-in time, which eventually leads to a significant increase in material loss. The adverse effects of high roughness can be alleviated by the lubrication of citric acid, which can maintain a mild wear behavior regardless of initial surface roughness.

Enamel wear against monolithic zirconia restorations: A meta-analysis and systematic review of in vitro studies

OBJECTIVE

An assessment was performed to identify and evaluate dental enamel wear caused by monolithic zirconia restoration. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Evidence, and the Cochrane Library up to May 2020.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Studies were selected for systematic review according to the inclusion (articles conducted on the wear of enamel samples opposing monolithic zirconia) and exclusion (case reports, non-English articles, and monolithic zirconia samples facing other materials rather than human enamel) criteria. Of those, articles on polished and glazed monolithic zirconia subjected to a 50 N vertical load with a range of 240,000-250,000 cycles, equivalent to 1 year of in vivo mastication, were included in the meta-analysis.

RESULTS

In total, 3968 articles were pooled. Twenty-five articles met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Three studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that the enamel wear against monolithic zirconia was within the statistically accepted level. Moreover, the polished monolithic zirconia surface caused less enamel wear than the glazed surface.

CONCLUSION

This review indicates that monolithic zirconia restorations cause acceptable antagonist enamel wear. Moreover, the meta-analysis results agreed that the final restoration's surface texture plays an essential role in the wear process.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Monolithic zirconia restorations have been widely used in dental practice because they eliminate the chipping problems resulting from using veneered restorations. With recent technology development, monolithic zirconia has obtained more esthetic features and a more natural look. However, due to the high strength and surface roughness of monolithic zirconia, wear on the antagonist's teeth was detected. The results showed that this wear amount was statistically acceptable and lower than other ceramics such as feldspathic porcelain and enamel. Furthermore, surface treatment methods must be applied to minimize tooth wear, as polished or glazed surfaces interfere with enamel loss.

Purpose

To simulate biodegradation and wear of stained and glazed CAD lithium disilicate ceramic, and evaluate their effects on the microbial adherence and mechanical and surface properties of lithium disilicate ceramic

Materials and methods

160 lithium disilicate ceramic discs were fabricated and divided in eight groups according to manual stain and glaze application with a fine paint brush (without stain and glaze; with stain and glaze) and aging procedures (no aging; wear at 30 N load, 1.7 Hz, 3 × 10⁵ cycles; biodegradation by exposure to microcosm biofilm; biodegradation + wear; biodegradation + wear). Profilometry was performed to determine the surface roughness and the wear consequences. Biaxial flexural strength test was performed, and a Streptococcus mutans adherence test was conducted to evaluate the number of colony forming units.

Results

Unaged samples with and without stain and glaze presented the lowest values of surface roughness (p < 0.001), but after aging (wear, biodegradation, or both), the samples in the stain and glaze groups were rougher than those in the no stain and glaze groups (p < 0.001). The stain and glaze groups showed the highest volume of wear after aging (p = 0.04), and had the lowest flexural strength values (p < 0.01), irrespective of the aging method. The aging method did not affect the flexural strength (p = 0.06). The number of colonies forming units was higher for biodegradation + no stain and glaze, biodegradation + wear + no stain and glaze, no aging + stain and glaze, biodegradation + stain and glaze, and biodegradation + wear + stain and glaze. The lowest values were observed for no aging + no stain and glaze.

Conclusion

The staining and glazing of lithium disilicate increased the surface wear and bacterial adherence, and decreased biaxial flexural strength of the material. When exposed to S. mutans, surface roughness increased, and biodegradation favored bacterial adherence.

An investigation of corrosive effects on zirconia with different crystal structures

This study aimed to compare the time-related corrosive resistance in different corrosive solution environments after sintering of zirconia with different crystal structures. The zirconia samples were produced in pellet form as 12.7 × 3 mm. To determine the time-related corrosion resistance of the sintered samples in sodium carbonate (Na₂ CO₃ ), sodium chloride (NaCl), and citric acid (C₆ H₈ O₇ ) solutions, the weights were measured at baseline then on the first and fifth days and the microhardness values were calculated. For the evaluation of surface appearance, images were obtained with a scanning electron microscope. The baseline microhardness values of the groups with 3 and 10 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia samples were found to be 1,064 VHN and 1,079 VHN, respectively. The microhardness values of the groups with 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia samples immersed in Na₂ CO₃ 1d (1,010 VHN) and 5d (1,060 VHN), and NaCl (1d (1,010 VHN) and 5d (1,055 VHN) were found to be affected more. The microhardness values of the sample group (1,064 VHN) with 10 mol% yttria doped zirconia which was left for 5 days in citric acid were found to be lower than the sample group (1,120 VHN) with 3 mol% yttria added. C₆ H₈ O₇ was seen to have a greater corrosive effect with increased yttria content and the microhardness value decreased. With longer duration of the samples of all the groups in C₆ H₈ O₇ , NaCl, and Na₂ CO₃ solutions, the surface characteristics of the samples were affected negatively. With prolonged immersion in the corrosive solutions, the resistance to the corrosion causing the changes in the surface topography of the samples was seen to decrease.

Tribological performance of the pair human teeth vs 3D printed zirconia: An in vitro chewing simulation study

This study aims to evaluate the tribological performance of the pair human teeth/robocasted zirconia, with a special focus on the enamel wear mechanisms. Zirconia pieces produced by robocasting (RC) and unidirectional compression (UC) were compared in terms of crystalline structure, density, porosity, hardness and toughness. Chewing simulation tests were performed against human dental cusps. The cusps wear was quantified and the wear mechanisms identified. Although most of the properties of UC and RC samples are similar, differences were observed for surface roughness and porosity. Although the samples did not suffer wear, the antagonist cusps worn in a similar way. In conclusion, robocasting seems a promising technique to produce customized zirconia dental pieces, namely in what concerns the overall tribological behaviour.

A State-of-the-Art Review on the Wear of the Occlusal Surfaces of Natural Teeth and Prosthetic Crowns

This review focuses on the wear mechanisms of natural and restorative dental materials, presenting a comprehensive description and analysis of the works published in the last two decades on the wear at the interface of occlusal surfaces. Different groups of tribological pairs were considered: tooth-tooth, tooth-restorative material (tooth-ceramic, tooth-resin-based-materials, and tooth-metal), and restorative-restorative materials. The lack of standardization of the wear tests impairs the direct comparison of the obtained results. However, it was possible to infer about the main wear mechanisms observed on the different classes of dental materials. Concerning ceramics, their toughness and surface finishing determines the wear of antagonist tooth. Abrasion revealed to be the main wear mechanisms at occlusal interface. In the case of resin-based composites, the cohesion of the organic matrix and the nature, shape, and amount of filler particles greatly influences the dental wear. The protruding and detachment of the filler particles are the main causes of abrasion of antagonist enamel. Metallic materials induce lower wear on antagonist enamel than the other classes of materials, because of their low hardness and high ductility. Most of the studies revealed plastic deformation and adhesive wear as the main wear mechanisms. Overall, more research in this area is needed for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved at the occlusal surfaces wear. This would be essential for the development of more suitable restoration materials.

Effect of repeated firings and staining on the mechanical behavior and composition of lithium disilicate

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the composition, flexural strength and fatigue behaviour of lithium disilicate ceramic (LD) after repeated firings and different staining techniques.

METHODS

LD discs were fabricated and divided according to number of firing cycles and staining technique: CO - control, discs were crystallized (850°C/10min); SC - single-step characterization - crystallization and staining (applied with a thin brush) were performed in a single step with one firing cycle (850°C/10min); and DC - double-step characterization - crystallization firing cycle was performed first (850°C/10min), followed by staining firing cycle (770°C/90s). Specimens were fired two, four or six times (one crystallization firing cycle and one, three or five staining firing cycles), resulting into 9 groups (n=30): COII, COIV, COVI, SCII, SCIV, SCVI, DCII, DCIV and DCVI. The composition of the specimens was investigated (EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy), and the biaxial flexural strength (n=10) and staircase tests (n=20, 5×10⁴ cycles, 5Hz) were performed. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05).

RESULTS

EDS and XRD revealed amorphous content for stained groups. Biaxial flexural strength was not affected by repeated firings in any group, but stained groups presented lower flexural strength than control groups (p=0.001). The fatigue limit results decreased in all groups compared to flexural strength. SC groups showed similar (SCII and SCIV) or even higher fatigue limits (SCVI) than the control groups, and DC showed the lowest fatigue limit values. SEM and Raman suggested that the interfaces between staining and the LD showed only an overlap for the DC groups, whereas for the SC it was suggested an interaction between the stain and the LD.

SIGNIFICANCE

Repeated firings did not result in decreased lithium disilicate flexural strength.Staining affected flexural strength and also resulted in increased amorphous content in the characterized specimens. Single-step staining resulted in the highest fatigue limit.

Effect of staining and repeated firing on the surface and optical properties of lithium disilicate

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the effect of staining and repeated firings on color, translucency and surface proprieties of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate (LD).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred eighty LD discs were made (ISO 6872) and distributed in different groups (n = 20): control (CO)-no treatment; single-step characterization (SC)-crystallization and staining fired together; and double step characterization (DC)-crystallization and then staining. The samples were submitted to two, four, or six firings, resulting in nine groups: COII, COIV, COVI, SCII, SCIV, SCVI, DCII, DCIV, and DCVI. The color and translucency were measured by a reflectance spectrophotometer. Surface roughness (Ra) and Vickers nano-hardness were also measured. ANOVA and Tukey statistical tests were used (α = .05).

RESULTS

Only CO and DC demonstrated significant color alterations (ΔE₀₀ > 1.8). SC and DC did not show changes in translucency by the number of firings (P > .05); however, for CO (P = .02) these values increased. Nano-hardness was similar in all groups (P > .05). Ra values indicated differences due to the type of characterization (SC presented the highest values) and number of firings (CO and DC groups) (P < .01).

CONCLUSION

SC promoted color, translucency, and roughness stability after repeated firings.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The single characterization technic in CAD/CAM lithium disilicate presents good color, translucency, and hardness stability, which promote predictable results to monolithic restoration.

Current status on lithium disilicate and zirconia: a narrative review

Background

The introduction of the new generation of particle-filled and high strength ceramics, hybrid composites and technopolymers in the last decade has offered an extensive palette of dental materials broadening the clinical indications in fixed prosthodontics, in the light of minimally invasive dentistry dictates. Moreover, last years have seen a dramatic increase in the patients’ demand for non-metallic materials, sometimes induced by metal-phobia or alleged allergies. Therefore, the attention of scientific research has been progressively focusing on such materials, particularly on lithium disilicate and zirconia, in order to shed light on properties, indications and limitations of the new protagonists of the prosthetic scene.

Methods

This article is aimed at providing a narrative review regarding the state-of-the-art in the field of these popular ceramic materials, as to their physical-chemical, mechanical and optical properties, as well as to the proper dental applications, by means of scientific literature analysis and with reference to the authors’ clinical experience.

Results

A huge amount of data, sometimes conflicting, is available today. Both in vitro and in vivo studies pointed out the outstanding peculiarities of lithium disilicate and zirconia: unparalleled optical and esthetic properties, together with high biocompatibility, high mechanical resistance, reduced thickness and favorable wear behavior have been increasingly orientating the clinicians’ choice toward such ceramics.

Conclusions

The noticeable properties and versatility make lithium disilicate and zirconia materials of choice for modern prosthetic dentistry, requiring high esthetic and mechanical performances combined with a minimal invasive approach, so that the utilization of such metal-free ceramics has become more and more widespread over time.

Additive manufacturing of ceramics for dental applications: A review

OBJECTIVE

The main goal of this review is to provide a detailed and comprehensive description of the published work from the past decade regarding AM of ceramic materials with possible applications in dentistry. The main printable materials and most common technologies are also addressed, underlining their advantages and main drawbacks.

METHODS

Online databases (Web of knowledge, Science Direct, PubMed) were consulted on this topic. Published work from 2008 to 2018 was collected, analyzed and the relevant papers were selected for inclusion on this review.

RESULTS

Ceramic materials are broadly used in dentistry to restore/replace damaged or missing teeth, due to their biocompatibility, chemical stability and mechanical and aesthetic properties. However, there are several unmet challenges regarding their processing and performance. Due to their brittleness nature, a very tight control of the manufacturing process is needed to obtain dental pieces with adequate mechanical properties. Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging technology that constitutes an interesting and viable manufacturing alternative to the conventional subtractive methods. AM enables the production of customized complex 3D parts in a more sustainable and less expensive way. AM of ceramics can be achieved with an extensive variety of methods.

SIGNIFICANCE

There is no perfect technology for all materials/applications, capable alone of fulfilling all the specificities and necessities of every patient. Although very promising, AM of ceramic dental materials remains understudied and further work is required to make it a widespread technology in dentistry.

Evaluation of Wear Resistance of Dental Chairside CAD/CAM Glass Ceramics Reinforced by Different Crystalline Phases

The mechanical properties of crystalline phase of glass ceramics are critical. This study aimed to evaluate wear resistance of different crystalline-reinforced dental chairside computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) glass ceramics. Materials of feldspar (Vita Mark II, VM), leucite (IPS Empress CAD, EC), lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, EX), lithium disilicate enriched with zirconia (Vita Suprinity, VS), and enamel were embedded, grounded, and polished, respectively. Samples were indented with a Vickers hardness tester to test the fracture resistance (KIC). Two-body wear tests were performed in a reciprocal ball-on-flat configuration under artificial saliva. The parameters of load force (50 N), reciprocating amplitude (500 μm), frequency (2 Hz), and the test cycle (10,000 cycles) were selected. Specimen microstructure, indentation morphology, and wear scars were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscopy, and three-dimensional profile microscopy. EX, VS, and EC demonstrated significantly higher KIC values than the enamel, while ceramic materials showed smaller wear depth results. Cracks, massive delamination, and shallow plow were seen on the enamel worn scar. Long deep plow, delamination, and brittle cracks are more common for VM and EC, and short shallow plow and smooth subsurface are the characteristics of EX and VS. Greater fracture toughness values indicated higher wear resistances of the materials for the test glass ceramics. The CAD/CAM glass ceramics performed greater wear resistance than enamel. Feldspar- and leucite-reinforced glass ceramics illustrated better wear resistance similar to enamel than lithium disilicate glass ceramics, providing amicable matching with the opposite teeth.

Wear resistance and abrasiveness of CAD-CAM monolithic materials

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restorations are in contact with the antagonist tooth, either a natural tooth or a restoration. Therefore, clinicians should be aware of the wear resistance of CAD-CAM materials and the wear behavior of the antagonist.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the wear resistance and abrasiveness of CAD-CAM materials.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In a 2-body wear test, the materials IPS e.max CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent AG), Vita Suprinity (Vita Zahnfabrik), Lava Ultimate (3M ESPE), Vita Enamic (Vita Zahnfabrik), and Lava Plus (3M ESPE) acted as abraders and, together with bovine enamel, also as antagonists. Each antagonist wheel ran against each abrader wheel for 200000 cycles, with a spring force of 15 N, and at a rotational speed of 1 Hz in distilled water. The wear rate was determined with a surface profilometer. The surfaces were observed with scanning electron microscopy, and their hardness, coefficient of friction, and roughness were evaluated.

RESULTS

Lava Plus and IPS e.max CAD exhibited the highest potential for wear of Lava Ultimate. These 2 materials, together with Vita Suprinity, provided the highest wear of enamel and Vita Enamic. Vita Suprinity and IPS e.max CAD had higher wear than Lava Plus, and the inverse was also true. Vita Enamic and Lava Ultimate were among the materials that caused the lowest wear of enamel and all other evaluated materials. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that except for Lava Ultimate, all other materials damaged enamel, in which Vita Suprinity and IPS e.max CAD were more aggressive when sliding against the materials. Lava Plus had the greatest hardness, followed by Vita Suprinity and IPS e.max CAD, Vita Enamic, and then Lava Ultimate. The coefficient of friction varied from 0.42 to 0.53. The Vita Enamic and Lava Ultimate showed the highest surface roughness.

CONCLUSIONS

The nanofilled composite resin and polymer-infiltrated ceramic were more antagonist-friendly (whether enamel or CAD-CAM material) than glass-ceramics and zirconia. Care should be taken when selecting the material that will contact mainly with glass-ceramics. Hardness should also be considered when selecting a material.

Comparative evaluation of the mechanical properties of CAD/CAM dental blocks

This study compares the mechanical properties of commercially available CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) millable dental blocks including Vita Enamic, Lava Ultimate, and MAZIC Duro. All the discs were cut in dimension of 1.2 mm in thickness and 12 mm in diameter, ground up to #1200 Sic papers and polished. The biaxial flexure strength of the ceramic discs was measured after thermocycling treatment and the broken surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The discs were brushed using a toothbrush testing machine under a 150 g load. Surface roughness and morphology were determined after toothbrushing cycles. Finally, the friction and wear behavior of the materials against an opposing tooth were studied using a reciprocating pin-on-plate test configuration. The vertical loss of dental cusp was measured, and the surface image was examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The biaxial flexural strength data were subjected to Weibull analysis. To compare the significance between the groups, all data were analyzed by one-way analysis (ANOVA). The biaxial flexural strength of the Lava Ultimate and MAZIC Duro materials is significantly higher than that of Vita Enamic. In addition, Lava Ultimate and MAZIC Duro exhibited significantly smoother surfaces than that of Vita Enamic after toothbrushing. Lava Ultimate and MAZIC Duro also showed less wear to the opposing tooth than that of Vita Enamic. In addition, Lava Ultimate possesses more suitable mechanical properties than the Vita Enamic and Mazic Duro for use in oral clinical prosthesis.

Comparative study of the wear of the pair human teeth/Vita Enamic® vs commonly used dental ceramics through chewing simulation

Ceramic based prosthetic materials have been used in dental restorations due to their excellent aesthetic and biocompatibility. However, due to concerns related to their mechanical properties and abrasive action against natural teeth, a proper selection of these materials is crucial to preserve the occlusal interactions and prevent abnormal dental wear. The aim of this work is to compare the wear performance of Vita Enamic®, a polymer infiltrated ceramic (PIC), with that of other three commercial ceramic based dental materials - Zirconia, Leucite and Zirconia Veneered - when tested against natural teeth. The crystalline structure, wettability, topography and hardness of the prosthetic materials were characterized before wear testing. Chewing simulator experiments (360,000 cycles, load 49 N) against dental human cusps were carried out using artificial saliva as lubricant. The wear of both teeth and prosthetic materials was quantified and the involved wear mechanisms were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that Zirconia presented the most suitable tribological behavior, since it led to the lowest wear on both occlusal surfaces. The prosthetic material presenting the highest wear was Vita Enamic®. Regarding the cusps' wear, the highest values were found for both Leucite and Zirconia Veneered. Polishing wear was the main wear mechanism in Zirconia system (prosthetic material and opposing enamel), while in the remaining ones was fragile fracture associated with abrasive wear. No direct relation could be established between wettability, initial roughness and hardness of the prosthetic materials and the wear of the tribological systems. Contrarily, microstructure and toughness revealed to be critical parameters.

Recent advances in understanding the fatigue and wear behavior of dental composites and ceramics

Dental composite and ceramic restorative materials are designed to closely mimic the aesthetics and function of natural tooth tissue, and their longevity in the oral environment depends to a large degree on their fatigue and wear properties. The purpose of this review is to highlight some recent advances in our understanding of fatigue and wear mechanisms, and how they contribute to restoration failures in the complex oral environment. Overall, fatigue and wear processes are found to be closely related, with wear of dental ceramic occlusal surfaces providing initiation sites for fatigue failures, and subsurface fatigue crack propagation driving key wear mechanisms for composites, ceramics, and enamel. Furthermore, both fatigue and wear of composite restorations may be important in enabling secondary caries formation, which is the leading cause of composite restoration failures. Overall, developing a mechanistic description of fatigue, wear, and secondary caries formation, along with understanding the interconnectivity of all three processes, are together seen as essential keys to successfully using in vitro studies to predict in vivo outcomes and develop improved dental restorative materials.

"Digitally Oriented Materials": Focus on Lithium Disilicate Ceramics

The present paper was aimed at reporting the state of the art about lithium disilicate ceramics. The physical, mechanical, and optical properties of this material were reviewed as well as the manufacturing processes, the results of in vitro and in vivo investigations related to survival and success rates over time, and hints for the clinical indications in the light of the latest literature data. Due to excellent optical properties, high mechanical resistance, restorative versatility, and different manufacturing techniques, lithium disilicate can be considered to date one of the most promising dental materials in Digital Dentistry.

Improving the long-term stability of Ti6Al4V abutment screw by coating micro/nano-crystalline diamond films

Abutment screw loosening is the most common complication of implanting teeth. Aimed at improving the long-term stability of them, well-adherent and homogeneous micro-crystalline diamond (MCD) and nano-crystalline diamond (NCD) were deposited on DIO(®) (Dong Seo, Korea) abutment screws using a hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) system. Compared with bare DIO(®) screws, diamond coated ones showed higher post reverse toque values than the bare ones (p<0.05) after cyclic loading one million times under 100N, and no obvious flaking happened after loading test. Diamond coated disks showed lower friction coefficients of 0.15 and 0.18 in artificial saliva when countered with ZrO2 than that of bare Ti6Al4V disks of 0.40. Though higher cell apoptosis rate was observed on film coated disks, but no significant difference between MCD group and NCD group. And the cytotoxicity of diamond films was acceptable for the fact that the cell viability of them was still higher than 70% after cultured for 72h. It can be inferred that coating diamond films might be a promising modification method for Ti6Al4V abutment screws.
