Spatial resolution and measurement uncertainty of strains in bone and bone-cement interface using digital volume correlation

Glenoid bone strain after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty: In vitro measurements with micro-CT and digital volume correlation

Glenoid implant loosening remains a major source of failure and concern after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). It is assumed to be associated with eccentric loading and excessive bone strain, but direct measurement of bone strain after aTSA is not available yet. Therefore, our objective was to develop an in vitro technique for measuring bone strain around a loaded glenoid implant. A custom loading device (1500 N) was designed to fit within a micro-CT scanner, to use digital volume correlation for measuring displacement and calculating strain. Errors were evaluated with three pairs of unloaded scans. The average displacement random error of three pairs of unloaded scans was 6.1 µm. Corresponding systematic and random errors of strain components were less than 806.0 µε and 2039.9 µε, respectively. The average strain accuracy (MAER) and precision (SDER) were 694.3 µε and 440.3 µε, respectively. The loaded minimum principal strain (8738.9 µε) was 12.6 times higher than the MAER (694.3 µε) on average, and was above the MAER for most of the glenoid bone volume (98.1%). Therefore, this technique proves to be accurate and precise enough to eventually compare glenoid implant designs, fixation techniques, or to validate numerical models of specimens under similar loading.

3D full-field strain in bone-implant and bone-tooth constructs and their morphological influential factors

The biomechanics of bone-tooth and bone-implant interfaces affects the outcomes of several dental treatments, such as implant placement, because bone, tooth and periodontal ligament are living tissues that adapt to the changes in mechanical stimulations. In this work, mechanical testing coupled with micro-CT was performed on human cadaveric mandibular bone-tooth and bone-implant constructs. Using digital volume correlation, the 3D full-field strain in bone under implant loading and tooth loading was measured. Concurrently, bone morphology and bone-implant and bone-tooth contact were also measured through the analysis of micro-CT images. The results show that strain in bone increased when a tooth was replaced by a dental implant. Strain concentration was observed in peri-implant bone, as well as in the buccal bone plate, which is also the clinically-observed bone resorption area after implant placement. Decreasing implant stability measurements (resonance frequency analysis and torque test) indicated increased peri-implant strain, but their relationships may not be linear. Peri-implant bone strain linearly increased with decreasing bone-implant contact (BIC) ratio. It also linearly decreased with increasing bone-tooth/bone-implant contact ratio. The high strain in the buccal bone plate linearly increased with decreasing buccal bone plate thickness. The results of this study revealed 3D full-field strain in bone-tooth and bone-implant constructs, as well as their several morphological influential factors.

Accurate B-spline-based 3-D interpolation scheme for digital volume correlation

An accurate and efficient 3-D interpolation scheme, based on sampling theorem and Fourier transform technique, is proposed to reduce the sub-voxel matching error caused by intensity interpolation bias in digital volume correlation. First, the influence factors of the interpolation bias are investigated theoretically using the transfer function of an interpolation filter (henceforth filter) in the Fourier domain. A law that the positional error of a filter can be expressed as a function of fractional position and wave number is found. Then, considering the above factors, an optimized B-spline-based recursive filter, combining B-spline transforms and least squares optimization method, is designed to virtually eliminate the interpolation bias in the process of sub-voxel matching. Besides, given each volumetric image containing different wave number ranges, a Gaussian weighting function is constructed to emphasize or suppress certain of wave number ranges based on the Fourier spectrum analysis. Finally, a novel software is developed and series of validation experiments were carried out to verify the proposed scheme. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the interpolation bias to an acceptable level.

Determination of replicate composite bone material properties using modal analysis

Replicate composite bones are used extensively for in vitro testing of new orthopedic devices. Contrary to tests with cadaveric bone material, which inherently exhibits large variability, they offer a standardized alternative with limited variability. Accurate knowledge of the composite's material properties is important when interpreting in vitro test results and when using them in FE models of biomechanical constructs. The cortical bone analogue material properties of three different fourth-generation composite bone models were determined by updating FE bone models using experimental and numerical modal analyses results. The influence of the cortical bone analogue material model (isotropic or transversely isotropic) and the inter- and intra-specimen variability were assessed. Isotropic cortical bone analogue material models failed to represent the experimental behavior in a satisfactory way even after updating the elastic material constants. When transversely isotropic material models were used, the updating procedure resulted in a reduction of the longitudinal Young's modulus from 16.00GPa before updating to an average of 13.96 GPa after updating. The shear modulus was increased from 3.30GPa to an average value of 3.92GPa. The transverse Young's modulus was lowered from an initial value of 10.00GPa to 9.89GPa. Low inter- and intra-specimen variability was found.

Micro-CT based finite element models of cancellous bone predict accurately displacement once the boundary condition is well replicated: A validation study

Non-destructive 3D micro-computed tomography (microCT) based finite element (microFE) models are used to estimate bone mechanical properties at tissue level. However, their validation remains challenging. Recent improvements in the quantification of displacements in bone tissue biopsies subjected to staged compression, using refined Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) techniques, now provide a full field displacement information accurate enough to be used for microFE validation. In this study, three specimens (two humans and one bovine) were tested with two different experimental set-ups, and the resulting data processed with the same DVC algorithm. The resulting displacement vector field was compared to that predicted by microFE models solved with three different boundary conditions (BC): nominal force resultant, nominal displacement resultant, distributed displacement. The first two conditions were obtained directly from the measurements provided by the experimental jigs, whereas in the third case the displacement field measured by the DVC in the top and bottom layer of the specimen was applied. Results show excellent relationship between the numerical predictions (x) and the experiments (y) when using BC derived from the DVC measurements (U_X: y=1.07x-0.002, RMSE: 0.001mm; U_Y: y=1.03x-0.001, RMSE: 0.001mm; U_Z: y=x+0.0002, RMSE: 0.001 mm for bovine specimen), whereas only poor correlation was found using BCs according to experiment set-ups. In conclusion, microFE models were found to predict accurately the vectorial displacement field using interpolated displacement boundary condition from DVC measurement.
