Polydimethylsiloxane and poly(ether) ether ketone functionally graded composites for biomedical applications

Functionally Graded Bioactive Composites Based on Poly(vinyl alcohol) Made through Thiol-Ene Click Reaction

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) composed of a polymer matrix embedded with calcium phosphate particles are preferred for bone tissue engineering, as they can mimic the hierarchical and gradient structure of bones. In this study, we report the design and development of a FGM based on thiolated poly(vinyl alcohol) (TPVA) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) with graded bioactivity, cell compatibility, and degradability properties that are conducive for bone regeneration. The polymer matrix comprises crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) with ester and thioether linkages formed via the thiol-ene click reaction, avoiding undesired additives and byproducts. Freshly precipitated and spray-dried HA was mixed with the TPVA hydrogel, and layers of varying concentrations were cast. Upon lyophilization, the hydrogel structure yielded porous sheets of the graded composite of TPVA and nano-HA. The new FGM showed higher values of tensile strength and degradation in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) in vitro, compared to bare TPVA. The bioactive nature of the FGM was confirmed through bioactivity studies in simulated body fluid (SBF), while cytocompatibility was demonstrated with human periodontal ligament cells in vitro. Cumulatively, our results indicate that based on the composition, mechanical properties, bioactivity, and cytocompatibility, the fabricated TPVA-HA composites can find potential use as guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes.

Higher-Order Free Vibration Analysis of Porous Functionally Graded Plates

The present work analyzes the free vibration response of functionally graded (FG) plates made of Aluminum (Al) and Alumina (Al2O3) with different porosity distributions, as usually induced by a manufacturing process. The problem is tackled theoretically based on a higher-order shear deformation plate theory, while proposing a Navier-type approximation to solve the governing equations for simply-supported plates with different porosity distributions in the thickness direction. The reliability of the proposed theory is checked successfully by comparing the present results with predictions available from literature based on further first-order or higher-order theories. A large parametric study is performed systematically to evaluate the effect of different mechanical properties, such as the material indexes, porosity volume fractions, porosity distributions, and length-to-thickness ratios, on the free vibration response of FG plates, as useful for the design purposes of most engineered materials and composite applications.

Removal of carbol fuchsin from aqueous solution by using three-dimensional porous, economic, and eco-friendly polymer

In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was prepared using a cheap material with a highly simple and different method. PDMS was firstly applied for the removal of carbol fuchsin (CF) cationic organic dye pollution in this study. Besides, the adsorption capacity of 3D PDMS for removal of the CF was found quite high compared to other materials in already published results. The synthesized PDMS was characterized using several spectroscopic and imaging techniques such as FTIR, Raman, SEM, stereomicroscope, EDX, UV/Vis, and TGA. The optimal conditions were found as 10 mg L^-1 initial concentration, 20 mg of adsorbent dose, 2 h contact time, pH 10, and 25°C temperature. The removal % of CF and the maximum adsorption capacity were calculated at approximately 89% and 88.8 mg g^-1 , respectively. Furthermore, the equilibrium studies showed that the Langmuir isotherm model fitted well with the removal of CF. Moreover, according to the kinetic results, the second-order kinetic model was found suitable (q_e,cal 89.3 mg g^-1 and q_e,exp 88.8 mg g^-1 close to each other) for the adsorption of CF. Also, the thermodynamic studies indicated that adsorption occurs spontaneously, and the adsorption process was physical adsorption. Besides, the reusability of the adsorbent was studied. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Water treatment technology should be low cost, economically viable and in the meantime, eco-friendly. The 3D porous PDMS was prepared by using cheap material with a highly simple method and eco-friendly This unique material was firstly applied for the removal of organic dye in water in this study.

Printability and mechanical performance of biomedical PDMS-PEEK composites developed for material extrusion

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) materials are widely adopted in the manufacture of facial prostheses, lab-on-chip devices and scaffolds for soft-tissue engineering applications; however, their processing by additive manufacturing (AM) has proved challenging. Liquid silicone rubbers (LSRs) are favoured for their high shape fidelity when cast, but their low viscosity and surface tension often prevent self-support, post-extrusion. Poly(ether) ether ketone (PEEK) particle reinforcement through interfacial bonding has proven to enhance key properties of PDMS, expanding their end-use functionality. Still, the impact of such particles on the printability of LSR-PDMS is not explored. In this study, for the first time, solvent-free biocompatible PDMS-PEEK composites (up to 30 wt% PEEK) were successfully characterised for material extrusion (ME) printing. Rheological analysis confirmed shear-thinning of all PDMS-PEEK composites under applied load (within the tolerances of the printer) and dominant storage moduli at rest (i.e. prints can self-support), considered highly desirable for ME-based printing. Attained rheological datasets were used to guide initial printability studies, which revealed finer track fidelity with rising fractional content of PEEK, at comparable print speed and displacement values. Composites with higher PEEK content demonstrated significant increases in Shore A hardness and stiffness (in tension and compression) in bulk form. Last but not least, enhanced shape fidelity (thanks to PEEK reinforcement) and geometrical autonomy further expanded the manufacturing freedom of PDMS, whereby infill density could be controlled in order to increase the range of mechanical performance, previously unachievable with conventional casting fabrication. Fundamentally, this could lead to the manufacture of bespoke spatially graded multi-material structures and devices that could be used to replicate the heterogenous properties of soft human tissues and in other advanced material applications.
