Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study aims to evaluate the shear bond and flexural strength fatigue behavior of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) repaired using different resin composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cylindric specimens of 4YSZ were obtained for the bond strength (Ø = 6 mm, 1.5 mm of thickness) and biaxial flexural strength (Ø = 15 mm, 1 mm of thickness) fatigue tests and divided into 3 groups according to the repair resin composite: EVO (nanohybrid), BULK (bulk-fill), and FLOW (flowable). The zirconia surface was air-abraded with alumina particles, a 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) primer was applied, and the resin composite was build-up over the zirconia. Fatigue shear bond strength and flexural fatigue strength tests were performed (n = 15). One-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were carried out for both outcomes, besides scanning electron microscopy and finite element analysis. RESULTS The repair material affected the fatigue shear bond strength of zirconia ceramic. The BULK group (18.9 MPa) depicted higher bond strength values than FLOW (14.8 MPa) (p = 0.04), while EVO (18.0 MPa) showed similar results to both groups. No effect was observed for the mechanical behavior (p = 0.53). The stress distribution was similar for all groups. CONCLUSION The repair of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) ceramics with bulk-fill resin composites was the best option for high fatigue bond strength. However, the fatigue mechanical performance was similar regardless of the applied repair material. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The repair of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (4YSZ) monolithic restorations may be performed with nanohybrid and bulk-fill resin composites in order to promote longevity in the treatment.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the morphology, shear bond, and flexural fatigue strength of a repaired translucent zirconia. Methods Monolithic disc-shaped specimens of translucent zirconia were prepared and ground to simulate repair areas. Four groups underwent different treatments: Air-MDP (air-abrasion with alumina particles and 10-MDP primer), Si-Sil (silica-coated alumina particles with MDP-containing silane), Si-MDP (silica coating with 10-MDP primer), and Uni adhe (universal adhesive). After roughness measurements and treatments, repairs were done using resin composite. Shear bond and flexural (n = 15) fatigue tests were performed. Surface topography, interfacial analysis, fractographic, and finite element analysis were conducted. Results The zirconia roughness was similar between the groups, however, the surface topography was modified according to the surface treatments. Si-Sil generated higher and more stable bond strength values (20.69 MPa) between translucent zirconia and resin composite when compared to Uni adhe (15.75 MPa) considering the fatigue bond strength scenario, while it was similar to Si-MDP (17.70 MPa) and Air-MDP (18.97 MPa). Regarding the mechanical behavior, Si-Sil (680.83 MPa) also showed higher and significantly different fatigue strength when compared to Uni adhe (584.55 MPa), while both were similar to Si-MDP (634.22 MPa) and Air-MDP (641.86 MPa). Conclusion The association of mechanical and chemical approaches is essential for long-term bond strength and optimized mechanical behavior, being air-abrasion protocols and the use of silane and/or MDP-based primers suitable for zirconia repair protocols. It was found that relying solely on a universal adhesive was not as effective as other options available. Clinical significance The surface treatment of repair protocols affects translucent zirconia's morphology. To enhance fatigue behavior in repaired monolithic zirconia, air abrasion is crucial. Exclusive use of a universal adhesive is less effective than other choices. A primer containing silane/MDP holds the potential for stable bond strength and optimized mechanical performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Successful ceramic restorations depend on the strong bonding with resin cement and even stress distribution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of adding MDP-containing zirconia primer before self-adhesive resin cements with different functional acidic monomers on fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia crown. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty defect-free human maxillary premolars were divided according to the cement type and application of MDP-containing zirconia primer into eight groups (n = 10): Calibra Universal (C), Calibra Universal combined with zirconia primer (CZ), RelyX U200 (R), RelyXU200 combined with zirconia primer (RZ), Panavia SA Cement Plus (P), Panavia SA Cement Plus combined with zirconia primer (PZ), Multilink Speed (M), and Multilink Speed combined with zirconia primer (MZ). After teeth preparation and fabrication of zirconia crowns, each crown was bonded to its corresponding tooth. All specimens were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles between 5 and 55°C, followed by cyclic load (50 N) for 240,000 cycles. Each specimen was subjected to a static axial load until fracture using universal testing machine and the fracture load was recorded. The fracture mode studied and recorded. The fracture load results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA test (α = 0.05). RESULTS A significant interaction (P = 0.038) of combining MDP-containing zirconia primer and cement type on fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia crown was detected. The mean fracture load values of zirconia crown were significantly influenced by the combined application of the MDP-containing zirconia primer with Calibra Universal (P = 0.01), RelyX U200 (P < 0.001), and Multilink Speed (P = 0.038), while there was no significant difference with Panavia SA Cement Plus (P = 0.660). There was significant difference (F = 20.69, P < 0.001) between the mean fracture loads of groups with self-adhesive cements (C, R, P, and M groups). The highest fracture load was recorded with RZ group (2446.90 ± 126.72 N) while the lowest fracture load was recorded with C group (1623.18 ± 149.86 N). CONCLUSIONS The self-adhesive resin cement with different acidic functional monomer affects the fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia crown. Application of MDP-containing primer could improve the fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia crown with most self-adhesive cements. The application of an MDP-containing primer had no impact on the fracture resistance of monolithic translucent zirconia crown bonded by MDP-containing self-adhesive resin cement.

Abstract
The characteristics of dental ceramics have been extensively studied over the years to provide highly qualified materials for use in prosthetic restorations. The ability to adhere to dental substrates, outstanding aesthetics (translucency, color, and substrate masking ability) and improved mechanical properties provide these materials with optical features and high strength to withstand masticatory stimuli. Different classifications are adopted, and it is generally considered that glass-ceramics have better optical characteristics due to the high glass content, and polycrystalline ceramics have superior strength favored by their densified and organized crystals, hampering crack growth. This knowledge was largely built-up during years of scientific research through different testing methodologies, but mainly employing static loads. It is important to not only take into account the intensity of loads that these materials will be exposed to, but also the effect of the intermittence of cyclic load application leading to mechanical fatigue and the influence of factors related to the crack origin and their propagation under this condition. Furthermore, the bonding surface of ceramic restorations requires surface treatments that improve the bond strength to luting agents; however, these treatments require caution because of their potential to produce defects and affect the structural behavior. Moreover, ceramic restorations often require internal adjustments for proper seating or external adjustments for fitting the occlusal contact with the antagonist. In this sense, finishing/polishing protocols may alter the defect population, as luting agents may also interact by filling in the superficial defects on the restoration intaglio surface. Thus, the balance among all these factors will define the performance of a restorative setup, as well as the posterior exposure to the humid environment and the masticatory stimuli (cyclical loading), which may favor developing slow and subcritical growth of cracks in ceramic materials and the degradation of the bond interface. Therefore, it is essential that the concepts which explain the fatigue mechanism are understood, as well as the crack propagation and failure patterns of restorative ceramic materials.

Abstract
The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the characteristics and consequences of post-processing methods after grinding procedures in YSZ ceramics on its surface roughness and flexural strength. The protocol of this review was made prospectively and is available online in the PROSPERO database (link). Literature searches on PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Lilacs, Web of Science and Scopus were conducted on December 2022 to select in vitro studies written in English, without publishing-date restrictions, that considered surface characteristics and mechanical properties of YSZ ceramics submitted to grinding and subsequent post-processing surface treatments as an attempt to revert the effect induced by grinding. Two authors independently selected the studies, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias. Mean differences (Rev-Man 5.1, random effects model, α= 0.05) were obtained by comparing flexural strength and surface roughness values of ground surfaces with at least one post-processing surface treatment (global analysis). Subgroup analyses were performed considering the most prevalent categories of post-processing methods. A total of 33 (out of 4032) studies were eligible and included in the analysis. In the global analysis, ground surfaces showed higher flexural strength than when post-processing methodologies were employed (p< 0.0001). The subgroup analysis showed that only polishing was able to enhance the flexural strength after grinding (p= 0.001); however, when other protocols were used, the ground surface was always superior in terms of flexural strength (p< 0.0001). Post-processing techniques in both the global and sub-group analyses were able to reduce the surface roughness after grinding in YSZ ceramics (p< 0.00001). High heterogeneity was found in all the meta-analyses. Concerning the risk of bias analysis, the included studies had mixed scores for the considered factors. In conclusion, in terms of improving flexural strength and restoring surface roughness after grinding, polishing protocols can be considered the best indication as post-processing treatment after YSZ ceramics adjustments/grinding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of in-lab simulation of CAD/CAM grinding and intaglio surface treatments on the surface characteristics (topography and roughness) and fatigue behavior of adhesively luted 4YSZ simplified restorations. METHODS Ceramic discs (Ø = 10 mm, thickness = 1 mm) were randomly allocated into 6 groups considering: "In-lab simulation of CAD/CAM grinding" (ground or polished) and "intaglio surface treatments": Ctrl (without surface treatment), AlOx (aluminum oxide air abrasion) or GLZ (glaze spray application). The surface roughness of all samples was measured, the treated discs received a ceramic primer, were luted with resin cement onto a dentin analogue material (woven glass-reinforced epoxy resin) and tested under a cyclic fatigue test (step-stress approach, n = 15; 1.4 Hz, 10,000 cycles/step, step-size of 100N starting at 200N until failure). A complementary analysis was performed to corroborate the findings in the fatigue test that the glaze fill defects increase the mechanical properties of the ceramic. To do so, bars (n= 10; 1.0 × 1.0 × 12 mm; considering the groups: N-ID: non-indented; ID: indented; ID-GLZ: indented plus glaze spray application) were indented in a vickers hardness tester to produce a crack pattern, treated with glaze or not, and then submitted to flexural strength tests (FS). Fractographic and topographic analysis were performed. RESULTS In-lab simulation of CAD/CAM grinding decreased the fatigue failure load of the 4YSZ ceramic when comparing polished and ground groups, regardless of surface treatment. GLZ induced better fatigue performance compared to the air abrasion, regardless of the grinding condition (ground or polished surface). The results of the flexural strength test corroborated the findings in the fatigue test, as the ID-GLZ group presented superior FS than the ID group, however both had inferior FS than N-ID. There is an inverse association between roughness and fatigue failure load, as the higher the surface roughness, the lower the fatigue failure load. Failures in the fatigue and flexural strength tests started from the face subjected to tensile stresses. CONCLUSION In-lab simulation of CAD/CAM grinding had a detrimental effect on the fatigue behavior of 4YSZ and glaze spray induced better 4YSZ performance compared to the air abrasion. The intaglio surface treatments differently influenced the 4YSZ fatigue performance, however, only glaze spray can reverse the damage caused by the grinding.

Abstract
Background. New surface treatments have been proposed to expand the clinical indications of zirconia prostheses. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of silica and fluorine nanofilms on zirconia ceramic on the resin cement bond strength. Methods. Zirconia blocks and discs underwent different surface treatments: untreated zirconia (CON), sandblasted, silica-coated alumina particles (30 µm) (SC), silica nanofilm (SN), and fluorine nanofilm (FN). Nanofilm deposition was performed through plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Zirconia surfaces were characterized on disks by morphology (atomic force microscopy, AFM), chemical analysis (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS), and contact angle analysis. A silane coupling agent was applied on each treated surface, and a cylinder of resin cement was built up. Half of the specimens in each group were submitted to 6000 thermal cycles (TC). Bond strength was analyzed using the shear test, and the fractographic analysis was performed with stereomicroscopy and SEM/EDS. Statistical analysis was performed through one-way ANOVA and Tukey test in the non-aged and aged specimens. Results. Nanofilms modified the zirconia surface, which became more hydrophilic and chemically reactive. Chemical bonding between Si-O was found in SN, and FN promoted a fluorination process on the ceramic surface, converting zirconia into zirconium oxyfluoride. Specimens of the SN (TC) group failed on pre-testing. FN (TC) bond strength (3.8 MPa) was lower than SC (TC) and CON (TC) after shearing. Adhesive failure predominated in the experimental groups. Silica nanofilm failure occurred after aging. Conclusion. Silica and fluorine nanofilms deposited by PECVD did not promote effective bonding between zirconia and resin cement.

Abstract
The aim of the present scoping review was to identify and discuss the methods, testing parameters, and characteristics used to induce cyclic fatigue on non-anatomic dental ceramic specimens. In vitro studies written in English which evaluated commercially-available non-anatomic dental ceramic specimens subjected to mechanical cyclic fatigue were selected. The search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The initial search yielded 1,636 articles, of which 81 were included. Based on the collected data, most of the included studies evaluated dental ceramic specimens cemented to supporting substrate (n= 42; 51.9%); used step-stress (n= 35; 42.2%) accelerated fatigue test, loading frequencies above 10 Hz (n= 31, 35.6%), stainless steel (n = 28, 32.6%) load applicator with spherical shaped tip 40 mm diameter (n= 25, 30.9%); applied only axial loads (n= 77, 95.1%); and considered a wet testing environment (n= 65, 78.3%). The definition of test geometry, method, and testing parameters must be cautiously considered according to the study objective and the scenario that is simulated. Accelerated fatigue tests, load frequencies up to 20 Hz, a 40 mm stainless steel spherical load applicator and a wet testing environment are the major common defined parameters presented in the existing literature. More studies exploring the influence of such factors on fatigue mechanism are necessary.
