Preparation and properties of nano silica-based bioactive glass/apatite/sodium alginate composite hydrogel

From micropores to mechanical strength: Fabrication and characterization of edible corn starch-sodium alginate double network hydrogels with Ca2+ cross-linking

This study explores the fabrication and characterization of corn starch‑sodium alginate double network hydrogels using two distinct calcium ion cross-linking methods: the gluconolactone immersed method (GIM) and the calcium chloride immersed method (CCIM). We investigated the ionic cross-linking mechanism of these hydrogels and compared their microstructure and mechanical properties. Our results highlight significant differences between GIM and CCIM hydrogels, with the CCIM method producing a more uniform and compact network. At the same calcium ion concentration, CCIM hydrogel exhibited higher mechanical strength and viscoelasticity properties compared to GIM hydrogel. The rapid release of Ca2+ in CCIM allowed for complete cross-linking with sodium alginate, forming a uniform 3D network structure. In contrast, the slow released Ca2+ in GIM resulted in a heterogeneous structure with a tough outer shell and incomplete internal cross-linking. Specifically, the CCIM hydrogel showed a compact network structure and the highest mechanical strength at a calcium chloride concentration of 1.6% (w/v). This study demonstrates that the Ca2+ release rate significantly impacts the microstructure and mechanical properties of double network hydrogels prepared by the immersion method. With this preparation strategy, corn starch‑sodium alginate edible gels that provided higher strength could be fabricated.

Decellularized Bone Matrix/45S5 Bioactive Glass Biocomposite Hydrogel-Based Constructs with Angiogenic and Osteogenic Properties: Ex Ovo and Ex Vivo Evaluations

Decellularized extracellular matrix is often used to create an in vivo-like environment that supports cell growth and proliferation, as it reflects the micro/macrostructure and molecular composition of tissues. On the other hand, bioactive glasses (BG) are surface-reactive glass-ceramics that can convert to hydroxyapatite in vivo and promote new bone formation. This study is designed to evaluate the key properties of a novel angiogenic and osteogenic biocomposite graft made of bovine decellularized bone matrix (DBM) hydrogel and 45S5 BG microparticles (10 and 20 wt%) to combine the existing superior properties of both biomaterial classes. Morphological, physicochemical, mechanical, and thermal characterizations of DBM and DBM/BG composite hydrogels are performed. Their in vitro biocompatibility is confirmed by cytotoxicity and hemocompatibility analyses. Ex vivo chick embryo aortic arch and ex ovo chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assays reveal that the present pro-angiogenic property of DBM hydrogels is enhanced by the incorporation of BG. Histochemical stainings (Alcian blue and Alizarin red) and digital image analysis of ossification on hind limbs of embryos used in the CAM model reveal the osteogenic potential of biomaterials. The findings support the notion that the developed DBM/BG composite hydrogel constructs have the potential to be a suitable graft for bone repair.

Fabrication, Properties, and Stability of Oregano Essential Oil and Sodium Alginate-Based Wound-Healing Hydrogels

The wound dressings fabricated by polymers and oregano essential oil (OEO) can be very effective as a hydrogel. The current study has been focused on fabricating the hydrogel membranes of oregano oil encapsulated as an antibacterial agent into sodium alginate (SA) solution by solvent casting method and then evaluated the antibacterial, antioxidant activity, and physicochemical performance of SA/OEO-based polymeric membranes. The polymeric interactions, surface morphology, water absorption capability, thermal stability, and encapsulation efficiency were investigated by FT-IR, SEM, swelling ratio, DSC, and encapsulation efficiency. The percentage encapsulation efficiency of essential oil was 40.5%. FTIR validated the presence of molecular interaction between individual components. SEM images showed a rough and porous appearance for hydrogel membranes. Moreover, DSC showed that the fabricated membranes were thermally stable. The inclusion of more content OEO decreased swelling ratios. The antioxidant test was carried out by DPPH assay and antibacterial test through disc diffusion method against microbes. The results revealed that membranes containing the highest content of OEO had more excellent antioxidant and antibacterial efficacy. Therefore, the polymeric membranes of sodium alginate loaded with oregano essential oil can be employed as an effective wound-healing candidate.
