Abstract
Plant-based bioactive substances have long been used to treat inflammatory ailments, owing to their low toxicity and cost-effectiveness. To enhance plant treatment by eliminating undesirable isomers, optimizing the chiral separation techniques in pharmaceutical and clinical studies is important. This study reported a simple and effective method for chiral separation of decursinol and its derivatives, which are pyranocoumarin compounds with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Baseline separation (Rs >1.5) was achieved using five different polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) that differed in chiral origin, chiral selector chemistry, and preparation technique. To separate all six enantiomers simultaneously, n-hexane and three alcohol modifiers (ethanol, isopropanol, and n-butanol) were used as mobile phases in the normal-phase mode. The chiral separation ability of each column with various mobile phase compositions was compared and discussed. As a result, amylose-based CSPs with linear alcohol modifiers demonstrated superior resolution. Three cases of elution order reversal caused by modifications of CSPs and alcohol modifiers were observed and thoroughly analyzed. To elucidate the chiral recognition mechanism and enantiomeric elution order (EEO) reversal phenomenon, detailed molecular docking simulations were conducted. The R- and S-enantiomers of decursinol, epoxide, and CGK012 exhibited binding energies of -6.6, -6.3, -6.2, -6.3, -7.3, and -7.5 kcal/mol, respectively. The magnitude of the difference in binding energies was consistent with the elution order and enantioselectivity (α) of the analytes. The molecular simulation results demonstrated that hydrogen bonds, π-π interactions, and hydrophobic interactions have a significant impact on chiral recognition mechanisms. Overall, this study presented a novel and logical approach of optimizing chiral separation techniques in the pharmaceutical and clinical industries. Our findings could be further applied for screening and optimizing enantiomeric separation.

Abstract
As a welcomed porous material, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have many advantages and are widely used in various aspects. Particularly, COFs have aroused great attentions of scientists in chromatographic separation field due to their outstanding advantages, such as high stability, large specific surface area and multiple voids. However, endowing COFs with chirality to construct chiral stationary phase (CSP) function is still facing many challenges. Here, we firstly prepared a β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and covalent organic framework functional silica CSP named as COF@CD@SiO2 by one-pot method to perform high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) chiral separation. The morphology and structure of the synthesized stationary phase were investigated by a variety of characterization methods including Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption experiment, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and elemental analysis (EA). The prepared stationary phase realized fast separation of six enantiomers in a short time. The separation mechanism was mainly ascribed to the inclusion complexation of β-cyclodextrin and the mutli-interaction sites from COFs material. In conclusion, the prepared chiral column can be used to achieve fast separation of enantiomers with good stability and reproducibility. These results can open new avenue for using chiral COFs in liquid chromatographic separation.

Abstract
In this work, the inclusion complexes of hydrophobic herbicide bensulfuron-methyl (BSM) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-CD (2-HP-β-CD) were prepared and characterized. Phase solubility study showed that both β-CD and 2-HP-β-CD increased the solubility of BSM. Three-dimensional structures of the inclusion complexes were simulated by the molecular docking method. The docking results indicated that guest BSM could enter into the cavities of host CDs, folded, and centrally aligned inside the inclusion complexes. The benzene ring of the guest molecule was close to the wide rim of the host molecules; the pyrimidine ring and side chains of the guest molecule were oriented toward the narrow rim of the host molecule. The inclusion complexes were successfully prepared by the coprecipitation method. The physiochemical characterization data of 1H NMR, FT-IR, XRD, and DSC showed that the guest and host molecules were well included. BSM had lower soil adsorption and higher herbicidal activity in the complexation form with β-CD or 2-HP-β-CD than in the pure form. The present study provides an approach to develop a novel CDs-based formulation for hydrophobic herbicides.

Abstract
Several chiral reagents including cyclodextrins (CDs) and derivatives, crown ethers, proteins, chiral surfactants, and polymers have been involved in dual-selector systems for enantioseparation of a series of compounds by capillary electrophoresis (CE). In this paper, chondroitin sulfate D-based dual-selector system (CSD/CM-β-CD) was firstly established and investigated for the enantioseparation of six basic racemic drugs in capillary electrophoresis. Compared to the single-selector systems, synergistic effect and significantly improved separations for all tested analytes were observed in CSD/CM-β-CD system. The effect of several parameters, such as buffer pH, chiral selector concentration, and applied voltage, was systematically optimized. Meanwhile, to investigate the possible chiral recognition mechanisms in CSD/CM-β-CD synergistic system, we tried to apply the molecular docking method to simulate the host-guest binding procedures of the polysaccharide-based dual system for the first time. The difference in binding free energy was found to correspond to the chiral selectivity factor. The existence of CSD-CM-β-CD complex may give rise to a higher discriminatory ability against the enantiomers, indicating the synergistic effect in CSD/CM-β-CD system. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Abstract
Although the halogen bond (XB) has been so far mainly studied in silico and in the solid state, its potential impact in solution is yet to be fully understood. In this study, we describe the first systematic investigation on the halogen bond in solvated environment by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Thirty three atropisomeric polyhalogenated-4,4'-bipyridines (HBipys), containing Cl, Br and I as substituents, were selected and used as potential XB donors (XBDs) on two cellulose-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) containing potential XB acceptors (XBAs). The impact of the halogens on the enantiodiscrimination mechanism was investigated and iodine showed a pivotal role on the enantioseparation in non-polar medium. Electrostatic potentials (EPs) were computed to understand the electrostatic component of CSP-analyte interaction. Moreover, van't Hoff studies for ten HBipys were performed and the thermodynamic parameters governing the halogen-dependent enantioseparations are discussed. Finally, a molecular dynamic (MD) simulation is proposed to model halogen bond in polysaccharide-analyte complexes by inclusion of a charged extra point to represent the positive 'σ-hole' on the halogen atom. On the basis of both experimental results and theoretical data, we have profiled the halogen bond as a chemo-, regio-, site- and stereoselective interaction which can work in HPLC environment besides other known interactions based on the complementarity between selector and selectand.

Abstract
Inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with L- and D-phenylalanine (Phe) have been characterized in solution by fluorometry and in gas phase by semiempirical PM3 calculations. The unimolar stoichiometric ratio of both β-CD-L-Phe and β-CD-D-Phe complexes and the stability constants (K) were deduced from fluorometric titrations. The β-CD-L-Phe complex is more stable than the β-CD-D-Phe complex as indicated by the larger K values, 21.1 vs. 6.86 M(-1). This is consistent with the stabilization energies (ΔE(stb)) and inclusion geometries obtained from PM3 calculations. The β-CD-L-Phe complex with L-Phe residing in the central β-CD cavity and pointing its COOH group downwards to the O6 end has ΔE(stb)=-62.7 kJ mol(-1), whereas the β-CD-D-Phe complex with D-Phe placing at 3Å beneath the β-CD O4-plane and pointing its COOH group upwards to the O2/O3 end has ΔE(stb)=-53.3 kJ mol(-1). The unison of host-guest intermolecular hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions and molecular deformations plays an essential role in forming and stabilizing the inclusion complexes. Our results show that the β-CD-L-Phe and β-CD-D-Phe inclusion complexes are relatively stable and differentiable, suggesting the applications of CDs in foods and drugs.
