Push-pull nitronates in the [3+2] cycloaddition with nitroethylene: Molecular Electron Density Theory study

Understanding the Regioselectivity and the Molecular Mechanism of [3 + 2] Cycloaddition Reactions between Nitrous Oxide and Conjugated Nitroalkenes: A DFT Computational Study

Regiochemical aspects and the molecular mechanism of the [3 + 2] cycloaddition between nitrous oxide and conjugated nitroalkenes were evaluated on the basis of the wb97xd/6-311 + G(d) (PCM) computational study. It was found that, independently of the nature of the nitroalkene, all considered processes are realized via polar, single-step mechanisms. All attempts at the localization of hypothetical zwitterionic intermediates were unsuccessful. Additionally, the DFT computational study suggested that, in the course of the reaction, the formation of respective Δ²-4-nitro-4-R₁-5-R₂-1-oxa-2,3-diazolines was preferred from the kinetic point of view.

A molecular electron density theory study on the Chichibabin reaction: The origin of regioselectivity

A Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) study was performed on the nucleophilic amination of pyridine and benzene to elucidate the observed regioselectivity in the Chichibabin reaction. For this purpose, three possible reaction paths were considered between NaNH₂ and the 2-, 3- and 4-positions of pyridine. The reaction of NaNH₂ and benzene was also investigated. The results indicated that in each reaction, the first step involves the nucleophilic attack of the NH₂‾ ion toward the aromatic system to produce an anionic intermediate. The second step, proceeds via hydride elimination of the anionic intermediate to produce the corresponding aromatic amine. This step is more favourable both kinetically and thermodynamically for the reaction at the 2-position of pyridine relative to the 4-position. In contrast to the Parr functions analysis which indicates that the 4-position is activated more electrophilically in pyridine, the PES analysis reveals that the 2-position attack with the NH₂‾ ion is more favourable both thermodynamically and kinetically. The results for the reaction of sodium amide and benzene indicated that this reaction is not feasible due to the high activation barriers. In consistent with the experimental results, the ELF analysis indicated that in the first step of the reaction between pyridine and sodium amide, the formation of the C2-N bond takes place via a pseudoradical coupling between the C2 carbon atom of pyridine and the N atom of NaNH₂. These variations occur in the second-half of the first step of the reaction. NCI analysis on the reaction revealed that the more attractive forces between the fragments, make the transition states for the 2-position attack more stable relative to the others. Thus, the NCI analysis can satisfactorily describe the observed regioselectivity in the Chichibabin reaction.

Mechanistic aspects of the synthesis of seven-membered internal nitronates via stepwise [4 + 3] cycloaddition involving conjugated nitroalkenes: Molecular Electron Density Theory computational study

The density functional theory computational study indicates the possibility of the synthesis of seven-membered internal nitronates via cycloaddition reactions involving Z-C-aryl-N-methylnitrones and E-2-aryl-1-cyano-1-nitroethenes. The detailed exploration of the reaction paths indicates a polar, stepwise reaction mechanism through the zwitterionic intermediate. Using bonding evolution theory (BET), we have deciphered the molecular mechanism of the [4 + 3] cycloaddition reaction between E-2-phenyl-1-cyano-1-nitroethene and Z-C-phenyl-N-methylnitrone. The BET study has revealed that the formation of two CO single bonds takes place in the same way, through the depopulation of NC and CC bonding regions and monosynaptic basins, respectively. The first O1C7 single bond was formed in the sixth phase, while the second C3O4 bond was formed in the last ninth phase.

On the Question of Zwitterionic Intermediates in the [3 + 2] Cycloaddition Reactions between C-arylnitrones and Perfluoro 2-Methylpent-2-ene

The molecular mechanism of the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between C-arylnitrones and perfluoro 2-methylpent-2-ene was explored on the basis of DFT calculations. It was found that despite the polar nature of the intermolecular interactions, as well as the presence of fluorine atoms near the reaction centers, all reactions considered cycloaddition proceed via a one-step mechanism. All attempts for the localization of zwitterionic intermediates on the reaction paths were not successful. Similar results were obtained regardless of the level of theory applied.

Understanding the molecular mechanism of γ-elimination of nitrous acid in the framework of the molecular electron density theory

The reactions of γ-dehydronitration of furaxanenitrolic acids have been studied within the density functional theory using molecular electron density theory scheme at the MPWB1K(PCM)/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. The alteration of bonding along the course of the reaction is studied in the topology of the electron density functional within the bonding evolution theory perspective. The characteristics of electron density changes indicate that we can distinguish six different phases in the nitrous acid extrusion from furaxanenitrolic acid 1a. These different phases related to the intrinsic reaction coordinate path of the analyzed reaction denote the non-concerted nature of the molecular mechanism.

Perfluorobicyclo[2.2.0]hex-1(4)-ene as unique partner for Diels–Alder reactions with benzene: a density functional theory study

The mechanism of the Diels–Alder reactions between perfluorobicyclo[2.2.0]hex-1(4)-ene (1a) and bicyclo[2.2.0]hex-1(4)-ene (1b) with benzene (2a) and naphthalene (2b) has been studied within the density functional theory at the MPWB1K/6-311G(d,p) level. The bonding pattern in these reactions is analyzed in the topology of the electron localization function within the bonding evolution theory perspective. The bonding electron density changes along the reaction paths reveal that the C–C bond formation takes place through a synchronous and non-concerted one-step mechanism and proceeds with a moderate activation energy. The reactivity order with 1a is 2a–2b. The reactions begin by the rupture of the double bond in the strained 1a-b molecules, and then two pseudoradical centers at the 1a-b fragments are created. Finally, at the same time, two new single bonds are formed in the cycloaddition products. The TSs proceed with high global electron density transfer providing a polar character at these reactions.

The conversion of N-trialkylsilyloxy nitronates into bicyclic isoxazoline derivatives has been explored using the density functional theory method within the context of molecular electron density theory at the ωB97XD(PCM)/6-311G(d,p) level.

On the Question of Zwitterionic Intermediates in the [3+2] Cycloaddition Reactions: A Critical Review

New discoveries require a fundamental revision of the view on the mechanism of the 32CAreaction (according to the older nomenclature defined as 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions). The view of the one-step, “concerted” mechanism of such processes developed in the 20-century is very popular today, both in academic literature and among organic chemists who do not specialize in such transformations. Meanwhile, more and more reports bring examples of reactions that clearly cannot be treated as processes without intermediates. However, these examples are documented very differently. In addition to comprehensive studies using many complementary research techniques, there are also reports in which the presence of intermediates in the cycloaddition environment is postulated on the basis of very unreliable premises. This review is an attempt at a critical analysis and systematization of data in the presented area.

Participation of Phosphorylated Analogues of Nitroethene in Diels–Alder Reactions with Anthracene: A Molecular Electron Density Theory Study and Mechanistic Aspect

The structure and the contribution of the bis(2-chloroethyl) 2-nitro 1a and 2-bromo-2-nitroethenylphosphonates 1b with anthracene 2 in the Diels–Alder (DA) reactions have been studied within the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) at the B3LYP functional together with 6-31G(d), 6-31+G(d) and 6-31+G(d,p) basic sets. Analysis of the Conceptual Density Functional Theory (CDFT) reactivity indices indicates that 1a and 1b can be classified as a strong electrophile and marginal nucleophile, while 2 is classified as a strong electrophile and strong nucleophile. The studied DA reactions take place through a one-step mechanism. A Bonding Evolution Theory (BET) of the one path associated with the DA reaction of 1a with 2 indicates that it is associated with non-concerted two-stage one-step mechanism. BET analysis shows that the first C2-C3 single bond is formed in Phase VI, while the second C1-C6 single bond is formed in the Phase VIII. The formation of both single bonds occurs through the merging of two C2 and C3, C1 and C6 pseudoradical centers, respectively.
