Conceptual DFT and TDDFT study on electronic structure and reactivity of pure and sulfur doped (CrO3)n (n = 1-10) clusters

Electronic Properties and CO2-Selective Adsorption of (NiB)n (n = 1~10) Clusters: A Density Functional Theory Study

In this study, we investigated the electronic properties and selective adsorption for CO₂ of nickel boride clusters (NiB)_n, (n = 1~10) using the first principles method. We optimized the structures of the clusters and analyzed their stability based on binding energy per atom. It was observed that (NiB)_n clusters adopt 3D geometries from n = 4, which were more stable compared to the plane clusters. The vertical electron affinity, vertical ionization energy, chemical potential, and highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap were calculated. Our results revealed that (NiB)₆ and (NiB)₁₀, with high chemical potential, exhibit a higher affinity for CO₂ adsorption due to a charge delivery channel that forms along the Ni→B→CO₂ path. Notably, (NiB)₁₀ demonstrated a more practical CO₂ desorption temperature, as well as a broader window for the selective adsorption of CO₂ over N₂. The density of states analysis showed that the enhanced CO₂ adsorption on (NiB)₁₀ can be attributed to the synergistic effect between Ni and B, which provides more active sites for CO₂ adsorption and promotes the electron transfer from the surface to the CO₂ molecule. Our theoretical results imply that (NiB)₁₀ should be a promising candidate for CO₂ capture.

Theoretical analysis of OLED performances of some aromatic nitrogen-containing ligands

It is well-known that tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) complex and N,N'diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-diphenyl-4,4'-diamine compound (TPD) are widely used as electron transfer material (ETL) and hole transfer material (HTL) in organic light emitting diode (OLED) structure, respectively. Considering the reference materials, in the present work, the OLED performances of some cyclic aromatic structures such as 4,4'azopyridine [AZPY], 4,4'-bipyridine [BIPY], 1,2-bis[4'-(4-methylphenyl)2,2':6'2″-terpyridin6-yl]ethyne (BISTERPY), 5,5'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (DABP), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'c]phenazine (DPP), 4,7-phenanthroline (PHEN) including nitrogen atom have been theoretically analyzed. It is important to note that B3LYP/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/TZP levels of the theory were taken into account for the calculations about monomeric and dimeric structures, respectively. Additionally, the calculations of the mentioned monomeric form were performed at B3LYP-D3/6-31G, CAM-B3LYP/6-31G and ωB97X-D/6-31G(d) levels. For a detailed theoretical analysis, the reorganization energies (λe and λh), adiabatic and vertical ionization potentials and electron affinities, the effective transfer integrals (Ve and Vh), and the charge transfer rates (We and Wh) of all compounds were computed by means of computational chemistry tools. In the light of calculated parameters, it is determined that these mentioned aromatic cyclic structures will be used in which layers of OLED structure. The results obtained in this study will be helpful in the design and applications of new molecules as OLED materials in the future.

Photodegradation of dye using Polythiophene/ZnO nanocomposite: A computational approach

Incorporating nanostructured photocatalysts in polymers is a strategic way to obtain novel water purification systems. Here, we present density functional theory (DFT) study of Polythiophene/Zinc oxide (PTh/ZnO) nanocomposite with high photocatalytic performance and stability which exhibits superior degradation of alizarine dye under the visible light condition with interaction energy of -149.55 kcal/mol between conducting polymer (PTh) and metal oxide, with PTh sponsoring more number of electrons to the conduction band of ZnO. The electrical and optical properties of optimized geometries of PTh/ZnO nanocomposite were studied by frontier molecular orbital analysis, natural bond orbital (NBO) charge simulation, natural electronic configuration, and UV-vis absorption spectra. The modulation of the energy band gap (∽ 2.60 eV) and exciton binding energy (∽ 0.36 eV) causes visible light absorption and hence enhances the photodegradation activity of PTh/ZnO. NBO analysis evidences the electron accepting behavior of ZnO in the composites as it withdraws electron cloud density of about 0.14e from the polymer unit.
