Encapsulation of heavy metal ions via adsorption using cellulose/ZnO composite: First principles approach

The primary goal of the current research is to describe an effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of aquatic micropollutants. The design of the cellulose-modified zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposite was successfully carried out by density functional calculations. The proposed structures of the constituent and composite materials were confirmed using formation energy (Ef), frontier orbitals, band gaps (Egap), density of state (DOS) plots, natural bond orbitals (NBO), and UV-Vis spectral analysis. The cellulose/(ZnO)12 composite was further used for the adsorption of different heavy metal ions such as Hg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and As(III) through calculation of electronic and optical properties. The values of the adsorption energy (Eads) show that the As(III) interacted better with the composite in both phases, i.e., gas (-806.98 kcal/mol) and aqueous (-491.66 kcal/mol). The analysis of frontier molecular orbital data exhibited a decrease in the Egap of composite@metal ion complexes. The high negative value of the solvation energies (ΔEsol) indicates the suitability of composite@metal ions in an aqueous environment. The nature of interactions between metal ions and the composite unit is analyzed by noncovalent interactions (NCI) and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). The theoretical results of the present study show the feasibility of the cellulose/(ZnO)12 composite for the removal of heavy metal ions and provide useful information to experimentalists to treat contaminated water.

Defect-rich platinum-zinc oxide heterojunction as a potent ROS amplifier for synergistic sono-catalytic therapy

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a physical therapy that utilizes critical sonosensitizers triggered by ultrasound to achieve an effective non-invasive tumor treatment. However, the inadequate sonodynamic efficacy and low responsive activities of traditional inorganic sonosensitizers have hindered its practical application. Here, we rationally design a platinum-zinc oxide (PtZnO) sonosensitizer to significantly enhance the efficacy of SDT through its inherent bandgap structure and dual-nanozyme activities. The PtZnO possesses a narrow bandgap (2.89 eV) and an appropriate amount of oxygen defects, which promote the efficiency of electrons and holes separation and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under US irradiation. Simultaneously, the PtZnO exhibits both catalase-like and peroxidase-like activities, which effectively catalyze endogenous H2O2 into a large number of O2 and toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH), thus achieving an efficient enhancement of SDT and catalytic therapy. Moreover, the PtZnO has significant glutathione consumption performance, further amplifying the oxidative stress. Ultimately, the PtZnO achieves a triple ROS amplification effect, with the yields of singlet oxygen (1O2) and •OH reaching 859.1 % and 614.4 %, respectively, inducing a highly effective sono-catalytic therapy with a remarkable tumor inhibition rate of 98.1 %. This study expands the application of ZnO semiconductor heterojunctions in the nanomedicine area, and the simple yet efficient design of the PtZnO provides a strategy for the development of sonosensitizers. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A platinum-zinc oxide (PtZnO) heterojunction sonosensitizer is constructed with dual-nanozyme activities and achieves a triple ROS amplification effect, leading to an efficient synergistic sono-catalytic therapy. The PtZnO owns an inherent narrow bandgap and abundant oxygen defects, thus exhibiting an efficient sonosensitizer performance. It also possesses both catalase-like and peroxidase-like activities, which effectively catalyze the endogenous H2O2 into a large quantity of O2 and toxic hydroxyl radicals, thereby enhancing the SDT and catalytic therapy. Furthermore, its prominent glutathione consumption performance further amplifies oxidative stress. The yields of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals reach up to 859.1 % and 614.4 %, respectively, inducing a highly effective sono-catalytic therapy with an impressive tumor inhibition rate of 98.1 %.

Self-Immolative Polythiophene for Sunlight Inactivation of Harmful Cyanobacteria

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms and the released microcystins (MCs) caused serious environmental and public health concerns to drinking water safety. Photo-oxidation is an appealing treatment option and alternative to conventional flocculation and microbial antagonists, but the performances of current photosensitizers (either inorganic or organic) are unsatisfactory. Here, a polythiophene photosensitizer (PT10) with both high yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production (mainly ¹O₂, Φ_Δ = 0.51, > 8 h continuous generation) and moderate photostability was used as a powerful algaecide to inhibit Microcystis aeruginosa. Due to the positive charge of PT10, the algal cells were quickly flocculated, followed by efficient inactivation in 4 h under white light irradiation (96.7%, 10 mW/cm²). Meanwhile, PT10 was self-immolated in about 6 h. Upon biosafety evaluation with adult zebrafish, the low toxicity of PT10 and the degradation products of PT10 and algae (early logarithmic growth stage) were confirmed. In addition, microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a toxic microcystin that will be released during the destruction of the algal cells, was also degraded. Therefore, PT10-based photoinactivation of M. aeruginosa featured both high performance and low secondary pollution. In real-world aquatic systems, PT10 was confirmed to be capable of sunlight-assisted inactivation of M. aeruginosa and prevent algal blooms, thus making it appealing for environmental remediation.

Engineering Fe/Mn-doped zinc oxide nanosonosensitizers for ultrasound-activated and multiple ferroptosis-augmented nanodynamic tumor suppression

As an effective tumor-therapeutic modality, ultrasound-triggered sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has been extensively explored to induce cancer cell death by activating sonosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the traditional inorganic semiconductor-based sonosensitizers still suffer from inefficient ROS production because of the low separation efficiency of electrons and holes (e^-/h⁺) and their fast recombination. Herein, the iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) co-doped zinc oxide nanosonosensitizers have been rationally designed and engineered for augmenting the SDT efficiency against tumor by inducing both multiple ferroptosis and apoptosis of tumor cells. The Fe/Mn component was co-doped into the nannostructure of ZnO nanosonosensitizers, which not only catalyzed the Fenton reaction in the hydrogen peroxide-overexpressed tumor microenvironment to produce ROS, but also depleted intracellular glutathione to suppress the consumption of ROS. The doping nanostructure in the engineered nanosonosensitizers substantially augmented the SDT efficacy of ZnO nanosonosensitizers by promoting the separation and hindering the recombination of e^-/h⁺ under ultrasound activation. The multiple ferroptosis and apoptosis in the enhanced SDT effect of Fe/Mn co-doped ZnO nanosonosensitizers were solidly demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo on tumor-bearing mice in accompany with the detailed mechanism assessment by RNA sequenching. This work provides a distinct strategy to augment the nanomedicine-enabled SDT efficency by engineering the inorganic semiconductor-based nanosonosensitizers with transitional metal doping and inducing multiple cell-death pathways including ferroptosis.
