Implementing SPAM into STMAS: a net sensitivity improvement in high-resolution NMR of quadrupolar nuclei

On the applicability of cosine-modulated pulses for high-resolution solid-state NMR of quadrupolar nuclei with spin > 3/2

In MQMAS-based high-resolution solid-state NMR experiments of half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei, the high radiofrequency (RF) field requirement for the MQ excitation and conversion steps with two hard-pulses is often a sensitivity limiting factor in many practical applications. Recently, the use of two cosine-modulated (cos) low-power (lp) pulses, lasting one-rotor period each, was successfully introduced for efficient MQ excitation and conversion of spin-3/2 nuclei with a reduced RF amplitude. In this study, we extend our previous investigations of spin-3/2 nuclei to systems with higher spin values and discuss the applicability of coslp-MQ excitation and conversion in MQMAS and MQ-HETCOR experiments under slow and fast spinning conditions. For the numerical simulations and experiments we used a moderate magnetic field of 14.1 T. Two spin-5/2 nuclei (⁸⁵Rb and ²⁷Al) are mainly employed with a large variety of C_Q values, but we show that the practical set up is also available for higher spin values, such as spin-9/2 with ⁹³Nb in Cs₄Nb₁₁O₃₀. We demonstrate for nuclei with spin value larger than 3/2 a preferential use of coslp-MQ acquisition for low-gamma nuclei and/or large C_Q values with a much reduced RF-field with respect to that of hard-pulses used with conventional methods.

Practical considerations on the use of low RF-fields and cosine modulation in high-resolution NMR of I = 3/2 spin quadrupolar nuclei in solids

Despite its ease in experimental set up, the low sensitivity of MQMAS experiments is often a limiting factor in many practical applications. This is mainly due to the large radiofrequency (RF) field requirement of the two short hard-pulses often used for the optimum MQ excitation and conversion steps. Very recently, two novel MQMAS experiments have been proposed for I = 3/2 nuclei, namely lp-MQMAS and coslp-MQMAS, enabling an efficient MQ excitation/conversion with a reduced RF requirement, by utilizing two long pulses lasting one rotor period each, with or without cosine modulation. In this study, we focus on the practical considerations of these new methods and discuss their pros and cons to elucidate their appropriate use under both moderate and fast spinning conditions. Using four I = 3/2 (⁸⁷Rb, ⁷¹Ga, ³⁵Cl and ²³Na) nuclei at a moderate magnetic field (B₀ = 14.1 T), we show the superior use of these experiments, especially for samples with large C_Q values and/or low-gamma nuclei. Compared to all other existing sequences, the coslp-MQMAS method with initial WURST signal enhancement is the most robust, efficient and resolved high-resolution 2D method for spin 3/2 nuclei. Furthermore, using {²³Na}-¹H spin systems, we demonstrate the sensitivity advantage of the WURST coslp-MQ-HETCOR acquisition upon ¹H detection and fast MAS conditions.

Accelerating the acquisition of high-resolution quadrupolar MQ/ST-HETCOR 2D spectra under fast MAS via 1H detection and through-space population transfers

Recently, we established an experimental setup protocol to perform the population transfer from half-integer quadrupolar spin to ¹H nuclei under fast MAS in the context of MQ-HETCOR experiments. In this article, we further develop the high-resolution 2D HETCOR methods by ST-based approaches, making use of the sensitivity advantage of STMAS over its MQMAS counterpart. In a similar manner to the previous work, which utilized CP and RINEPT for the population transfer, we also demonstrate the experimental setup protocol for PRESTO. Using {²³Na}-¹H and {²⁷Al}-¹H spin systems of powder samples, we compare a series of MQ/ST-HETCOR 2D spectra to discuss the pros and cons of the distinct MQ/ST-based approaches for spin 3/2 and 5/2 nuclei, respectively. We also incorporate two experimental tricks to reduce the experimental time of such long 2D experiments, the Optimized Rotor-Synchronization (ORS) and the Non-Uniform Sampling (NUS), in the context of high-resolution spectra of half-integer quadrupolar spin nuclei.

Accelerating high-resolution NMR of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solids: SPAM-MQMAS and SPAM-STMAS

In solid-state NMR, multiple-quantum MAS (MQMAS) and satellite-transition MAS (STMAS) experiments are well-established techniques to obtain high-resolution spectra of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei. In 2004 and 2005, a soft-pulse-added-mixing (SPAM) concept was introduced by Gan and Amoureux to enhance the S/N ratio of MQMAS and STMAS experiments. Despite their robustness and simplicity, SPAM approaches have not yet been widely applied. Here, we further exploit SPAM concepts for sensitivity enhancement upon acquisition of two-dimensional MQMAS and STMAS spectra and also establish a general procedure upon implementation of SPAM-MQMAS and SPAM-STMAS NMR. Its effectiveness and ease in experimental setup are demonstrated using simulations and experiments performed on I ​= ​3/2 (²³Na, ⁸⁷Rb), 5/2 (²⁷Al, ⁸⁵Rb) and 9/2 (⁹³Nb) nuclei with a variety of quadrupolar coupling constants (C_Q). Compared to the conventional z-filter methods, sensitivity enhancements in between 2 and 4 are achievable with SPAM. We recommend to use SPAM with a ratio of 4:1 for the number of echoes and antiechoes to safely maximize the sensitivity and resolution simultaneously. In addition, a comparison of the experimental approaches is made in the context of SPAM-MQMAS and SPAM-STMAS NMR with respect to repetition delay and spinning frequency, aiming to discuss the precautions upon making a judicious choice of high-resolution NMR methods of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei.

Analysis of atomic scale chemical environments of boron in coal by 11B solid state NMR

Atomic scale chemical environments of boron in coal has been studied by solid state NMR spectroscopy including magic angle spinning (MAS), satellite transition magic angle spinning (STMAS), and cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS). The (11)B NMR spectra can be briefly classified according to the degree of coalification. On the (11)B NMR spectra of lignite, bituminous, and sub-bituminous coals (carbon content of 70-90mass%), three sites assigned to four-coordinate boron ([4])B with small quadrupolar coupling constants (≤0.9 MHz) are observed. Two of the ([4])B sites in downfield are considered organoboron complexes with aromatic ligands, while the other in the most upper field is considered inorganic tetragonal boron (BO(4)). By contrast, on the (11)B NMR spectra of blind coal (carbon content >90mass%), the ([4])B which substitutes tetrahedral silicon of Illite is observed as a representative species. It has been considered that the organoboron is decomposed and released from the parent phase with the advance of coal maturation, and then the released boron reacts with the inorganic phase to substitute an element of inorganic minerals. Otherwise boron contained originally in inorganic minerals might remain preserved even under the high temperature condition that is generated during coalification.

Practical comparison of sensitivity and resolution between STMAS and MQMAS for 27Al

An experimental comparison of sensitivity and resolution of satellite transition (ST) MAS and multiple quantum (MQ) MAS was performed for (27)Al (I=5/2) using several pulse sequences with a z-filter and SPAM, and two inorganic samples of kaolin (Al(2)Si(2)O(5)(OH)(4)) and glass (43.1CaO-12.5Al(2)O(3)-44.4SiO(2)). Six pulse sequences of STMAS (double-quantum filter-soft pulse added mixing=DQF-SPAM, double-quantum filter=DQF, double-quantum=DQ) and MQMAS (3QMAS-z-filter=3Qz, 3QMAS-SPAM=3Q-SPAM, 5QMAS-z-filter=5Qz) are employed. All experiments have been conducted utilizing a static field of 16.4T (700MHz for (1)H) and a rotor spinning frequency of 20kHz. Dependence of S/N ratios as a function of radio frequency (r.f.) field strengths indicates that strong r.f. fields are essential to obtain a better S/N ratio in all experiments. High sensitivity is obtained in the following order: DQF-SPAM, DQF, DQ, 3QSPAM, and 3Qz, although the degree of sensitivity enhancement given by STMAS for glass is slightly smaller than that for kaolin. This might be due to the different excitation and conversion efficiencies of ST and MQ coherences as a function C(q) values because quadrupolar interaction of the glass are widely distributed, or to motional broadening caused by framework flexibility in the structure of glass. With respect to resolution, the full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of F(1) projections of DQF-STMAS and 3QMAS spectra for kaolin are found to be comparable, which agrees with a simulated result reported in a literature. For glass, the STMAS possess slightly wider line widths than 3QMAS. However, because such a difference in line widths of STMAS and 3QMAS spectra is substantially small, we have concluded that STMAS and 3QMAS have comparable resolution for crystalline and non-crystalline materials.

Correlation NMR spectroscopy involving quadrupolar nuclei

We review the recent developments proposed for integer or half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, focussing on the methods to observe them under high-resolution and to analyze their through-space and through-bond connectivities.

Heteronuclear dipolar decoupling effects on multiple-quantum and satellite-transition magic-angle spinning NMR spectra

We here report on the influence of heteronuclear dipolar decoupling on the (27)Al 3QMAS, 5QMAS, and the double-quantum filter-satellite-transition magic-angle spinning (DQF-STMAS) spectra of a strongly dipolar-coupled system, gibbsite. The requirements for heteronuclear dipolar decoupling increase with the order of coherence evolving in the indirect dimension of a two-dimensional (2D) experiment. The isotropic line width of the high-resolution 2D spectra, in samples like gibbsite, is composed of four parts: the distribution of isotropic shifts (delta(ISO), delta(QIS)), the homogeneous broadening related to the proton-proton flip-flop terms, the (27)Al-(27)Al homonulcear dipolar couplings, and the (1)H-(27)Al heteronuclear dipolar couplings. It is shown that, even in the case of gibbsite, where a strong proton-proton bath exists, the main resolution limiting factor in these experiments resides in the (1)H-(27)Al dipolar interaction.

93Nb and 17O NMR chemical shifts of niobiophosphate compounds

Niobiophosphate compounds with a large range of niobium and oxygen environments were studied with (93)Nb and (17)O solid-state NMR. (93)Nb isotropic chemical shift of pure niobate Nb(ONb)(6), pure phosphate Nb(OP)(6) and mixed phosphate-niobate Nb(OP)(x)(ONb)((6-x)) (1<or= x<or=5) sites were measured at a high magnetic field (18.8T). (93)Nb chemical shifts were found to be sensitive to the variation of local charge on Nb, but not to the local bond geometry (i.e. crystallographic site and edge or corner connectivity). A systematic shift to high field of the (93)Nb chemical shift is measured when x increases. Then, (17)O NMR spectra of a series of enriched samples provided the chemical shift and quadrupolar parameters for 4 types of oxygen environment (P-O-P, P-O-Na, P-O-Nb and Nb-O-Nb). Finally, Nb-O-Nb sites were characterized by a large (17)O chemical shift anisotropy.

Use of SPAM and FAM pulses in high-resolution MAS NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei

The merits of SPAM and FAM pulses for enhancing the conversion of triple- to single-quantum coherences in the two-dimensional MQMAS experiment are compared using (87)Rb (spin I=3/2) and (27)Al (I=5/2) NMR of crystalline and amorphous materials. Although SPAM pulses are more easily optimized, our experiments and simulations suggest that FAM pulses yield greater signal intensity in all cases. In conclusion, we argue that, as originally suggested, SPAM and FAM pulses are best implemented in phase-modulated whole-echo MQMAS experiments and that the use of SPAM pulses to record separate echo and antiecho data sets, which are then combined, generally yields lower signal-to-noise ratios.

Long-term stability of rotor-controlled MAS frequencies to 0.1 Hz proved by 14N MAS NMR experiments and simulations

Experimental and simulated 14N MAS NMR spectra of the NH4+ ions in the two polymorphs, mS60 and mP60, of (NH4)2MoO4 are used to illustrate that a long-term stability of rotor-controlled MAS frequencies to 0.1 Hz can be achieved using commercial instrumentation (MAS speed controller and 7.5 mm MAS probe with a single marked rotor) attached to a highly pressure-stabilized air supply. A new modification of the STARS simulation software employs a Gaussian distribution for the experimental spinning frequency around the frequency set for the MAS speed controller. A simulated spectrum is then obtained by summation of several calculated spectra for evenly spaced spinning frequencies around the set frequency with relative weight factors corresponding to the Gaussian distribution.

Comparison of high-resolution solid-state NMR MQMAS and STMAS methods for half-integer quadrupolar nuclei

Several different amplitude-modulated two-dimensional high-resolution methods, based on MQMAS and STMAS, are compared. They include 3QMAS, 5QMAS, DQ-STMAS, and DQF-STMAS experiments. A new method, called t1-split-STMAS, is also proposed for spin-3/2 nuclei. The comparison is performed in terms of isotropic resolution and spectral-width, efficiency, and sensitivity to magic-angle offset and spinning speed fluctuations.

Homogeneous broadenings in 2D solid-state NMR of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei

The question of the homogeneous broadening that occurs in 2D solid-state NMR experiments is examined. This homogeneous broadening is mathematically introduced in a simple way, versus the irreversible decay rates related to the coherences that are involved during t1 and t2. We give the pulse sequences and coherence transfer pathways that are used to measure these decay rates. On AlPO4 berlinite, we have measured the 27Al echo-type relaxation times of the central and satellite transitions on 1Q levels, so that of coherences that are situated on 2Q, 3Q, and 5Q levels. We compare the broadenings that can be deduced from these relaxation times to those directly observed on the isotropic projection of berlinite with multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning (MAS), or satellite-transition MAS. We show that the choice of the high-resolution method, should be done according to the spin value and the corresponding homogeneous broadening.
