Rapid MRI method for mapping the longitudinal relaxation time

Efficient phase-cycling strategy for high-resolution 3D gradient-echo quantitative parameter mapping

Magnetization-prepared (MP) gradient-echo (GRE) sequences suffer from signal contaminations from T₁ recovery during the readout train, which can be eliminated by paired RF phase cycling (PC) at the cost of doubling the scan time. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a novel unpaired PC strategy to eliminate the time penalty for high-resolution quantitative parameter mapping in 3D MP-GRE sequences. Based on the observation that the contaminating T₁ recovery signal along the GRE readout train is independent of magnetization preparation, its impact can be eliminated using a novel curve-fitting approach with complex-valued data without needing paired PC acquisitions. Four new unpaired PC schemes were compared with two traditional paired PC schemes in both phantom and in vivo human knee studies at 3 T using a MP angle-modulated partitioned k-space spoiled gradient-echo snapshots (MAPSS) T_1ρ mapping sequence. In the phantom study, all methods resulted in consistent T_1ρ measurements (∆T_1ρ  < 0.5%) at the center slice when B₀ /B₁ values were uniform. Results were not consistent when off-center slices with nonideal B₀ /B₁ were included. Two unpaired PC schemes had comparable or significantly improved quantitative accuracy and scan-rescan reproducibility compared with the paired PC schemes. There was no significant T_1ρ quantitative variability increase or spatial fidelity loss using the new unpaired PC schemes. Unpaired PC schemes also had different T_1ρ spectral responses at different B₀ frequency offsets, which can potentially be exploited to reduce sensitivity to B₀ field inhomogeneities. The human knee study results were consistent with the phantom study findings. In conclusion, an unpaired PC strategy potentially allows more accurate quantitative parameter mapping with halved scan time compared with the paired PC approach to eliminate signal contaminations from T₁ recovery. It therefore offers additional flexibility in SNR optimization, spatial resolution improvement, and choice of imaging sampling points to obtain more accurate quantitative parameter mapping.

Spiral imaging in fMRI

T2*-weighted Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) requires efficient acquisition methods in order to fully sample the brain in a several second time period. The most widely used approach is Echo Planar Imaging (EPI), which utilizes a Cartesian trajectory to cover k-space. This trajectory is subject to ghosts from off-resonance and gradient imperfections and is intrinsically sensitive to cardiac-induced pulsatile motion from substantial first- and higher order moments of the gradient waveform near the k-space origin. In addition, only the readout direction gradient contributes significant energy to the trajectory. By contrast, the spiral method samples k-space with an Archimedean or similar trajectory that begins at the k-space center and spirals to the edge (spiral-out), or its reverse, ending at the origin (spiral-in). Spiral methods have reduced sensitivity to motion, shorter readout times, improved signal recovery in most frontal and parietal brain regions, and exhibit blurring artifacts instead of ghosts or geometric distortion. Methods combining spiral-in and spiral-out trajectories have further advantages in terms of diminished susceptibility-induced signal dropout and increased BOLD signal. In measurements of temporal signal to noise ratio measured in 8 subjects, spiral-in/out exhibited significant increases over EPI in voxel volumes recovered in frontal and whole brain regions (18% and 10%, respectively).

Prostate T(1) quantification using a magnetization-prepared spiral technique

PURPOSE

To adapt a magnetization-prepared spiral imaging technique, termed T1prep, for time-efficient radiofrequency (RF)-insensitive prostate T(1) quantification at 1.5 T and evaluate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) limits to voxel-based versus subregion analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A magnetization-prepared spiral imaging technique was adapted for robust T(1) contrast development, multislice imaging within 5 minutes, and data regression to a monoexponential decay. In vitro testing evaluated RF insensitivity of the multislice acquisition plus method accuracy. A pilot study was performed in 15 patients with low or intermediate risk localized prostate cancer.

RESULTS

The multislice design displayed excellent RF insensitivity (<1% error for RF mistunings to ± 20%) and accuracy (within 3% of gold standard for T(1) values between 140 and 2100 msec). A clinical pilot study reported significantly reduced T(1) from PZ to CG to tumor subregions (PZ: 1421 ± 168 msec, n = 11; CG: 1314 ± 49 msec, n = 13; 1246 ± 68 msec, n = 8). SNR measurements identified an inappropriateness of voxel-based analysis.

CONCLUSION

T1prep can quantify prostate T(1) as an adjunct measure for quantitative perfusion measurements and longitudinal treatment response monitoring. Intrapatient heterogeneities support T(1) assessment within individual patients. SNR calculations will support a transition to voxel-based analysis in future trials.

MRI contrast from relaxation along a fictitious field (RAFF)

A new method to measure rotating frame relaxation and to create contrast for MRI is introduced. The technique exploits relaxation along a fictitious field (RAFF) generated by amplitude- and frequency-modulated irradiation in a subadiabatic condition. Here, RAFF is demonstrated using a radiofrequency pulse based on sine and cosine amplitude and frequency modulations of equal amplitudes, which gives rise to a stationary fictitious magnetic field in a doubly rotating frame. According to dipolar relaxation theory, the RAFF relaxation time constant (T(RAFF)) was found to differ from laboratory frame relaxation times (T(1) and T(2)) and rotating frame relaxation times (T(1ρ) and T(2ρ)). This prediction was supported by experimental results obtained from human brain in vivo and three different solutions. Results from relaxation mapping in human brain demonstrated the ability to create MRI contrast based on RAFF. The value of T(RAFF) was found to be insensitive to the initial orientation of the magnetization vector. In the RAFF method, the useful bandwidth did not decrease as the train length increased. Finally, as compared with an adiabatic pulse train of equal duration, RAFF required less radiofrequency power and therefore can be more readily used for rotating frame relaxation studies in humans.

Sliding-window sensitivity encoding (SENSE) calibration for reducing noise in functional MRI (fMRI)

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at high magnetic field with parallel imaging (PI) has become increasingly popular for high-resolution imaging. We present a method of self-calibrated PI-fMRI in which sensitivity profiles are calculated using a sliding window of fully sampled multishot imaging data. We show that by updating these sensitivity profiles in a sliding fashion, thermal noise is reduced in the reconstructed image time series. This is accomplished by retaining thermal noise in the sensitivity profiles; no spatial smoothing is performed. These noisy profiles actually provide a closer match to those required for thermal noise-free reconstruction than conventional sensitivity map generation. Our proposed technique is especially applicable for acquiring high-spatial-resolution images, where thermal noise exceeds physiological noise. With conventional sensitivity calculation, PI-fMRI sensitivity is preserved only when using a voxel size large enough such that physiological noise predominates. With small voxel size, our technique reveals activation from visual stimulation where conventional sensitivity calculation techniques falter. Our technique enhances fMRI detection, especially when higher spatial resolution is desired.

Encoding to the longitudinal magnetization for MR imaging and flow velocity mapping

Phase-encoding to the longitudinal magnetization is implemented by adding encoding gradient pulses in the evolution period tau of the NMR pulse sequence 90 degrees+x-tau-90 degrees-x. This work focuses on the effect of the spin-lattice relaxation and its removal and on the constraint that the 90 degrees-x pulse can only transform the phase of the transverse magnetization partially to the longitudinal magnetization. Theoretical analysis shows that the encoded phase information and the spin-lattice relaxation effect are separable and the latter is identical in each repetition in collecting phase-encoding data. Thus the relaxation effect can be eliminated by subtracting a second data set whose phase information is inverted or by alternating the polarity of the relaxation contribution. From data with partial phase information, Fourier-transform image reconstruction results in mirror aliasing in which the two halves of the Fourier spectrum of positive and negative coordinates overlap. Removal of mirror aliasing requires imaging data of the orthogonal component. Nevertheless mirror aliasing is not necessarily a problem, depending on the subject of study. Phase-encoding to the longitudinal magnetization for spatial MRI and flow velocity mapping are demonstrated using the rotating ultra-fast imaging sequence (RUFIS).
