Diffusion tensor imaging of anisotropic inhomogeneous turbulent flow

Inhomogeneous anisotropic turbulent flow is difficult to measure, and yet it commonly occurs in nature and in many engineering applications. This work aims to introduce a technique based on magnetic resonance imaging which can spatially map the degree of turbulence as well as the degree of anisotropy. Our interpretation relies on the eddy diffusion model of turbulence, and combines this with the technique of diffusion tensor imaging. The result is an eddy diffusion tensor, which is represented by a symmetric three-by-three matrix. This tensor contains a wealth of information about the magnitude and directions of the turbulent fluctuations; however, the correlation time must be considered before interpreting this information. In the constricted pipe flow used in this study, the turbulence is greatest in magnitude in the space surrounding the core of the turbulent jet, and the turbulence is highly anisotropic.

Analysis of Renal Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) Using Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) and Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) Models

Analysis of renal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data to derive markers of tissue properties requires careful consideration of the type, extent, and limitations of the acquired data. Alongside data quality and general suitability for quantitative analysis, choice of diffusion model, fitting algorithm, and processing steps can have consequences for the precision, accuracy, and reliability of derived diffusion parameters. Here we introduce and discuss important steps for diffusion-weighted image processing, and in particular give example analysis protocols and pseudo-code for analysis using the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) models. Following an overview of general principles, we provide details of optional steps, and steps for validation of results. Illustrative examples are provided, together with extensive notes discussing wider context of individual steps, and notes on potential pitfalls.This publication is based upon work from the COST Action PARENCHIMA, a community-driven network funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) program of the European Union, which aims to improve the reproducibility and standardization of renal MRI biomarkers. This analysis protocol chapter is complemented by two separate chapters describing the basic concepts and experimental procedure.

Amorphism and Thermal Decomposition of Salicylsalicylic Acid-A Cautionary Tale

Salicylsalicylic acid ("Salsalate") is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with anti-rheumatic properties, whose amorphous form offers the potential for enhanced dissolution rates and improved bioavailability compared with its crystalline counterpart. It has been reported to form a stable glassy phase on heating and rapid quenching. A number of the existing studies of the solid-state structure of salsalate and of its thermal decomposition contain information that is difficult to reconcile. In this article, we review much of the existing literature in light of our own recent studies using solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and solid-state infrared spectroscopy, and conclude that much of the literature data relating to melting and the glassy state is questionable due to failure to take into account the effects of thermal decomposition.
