Comparison of experimental times in T1-D and D-T2 correlation experiments in single-sided NMR

Diffusion-relaxation correlation experiments in nuclear magnetic resonance are a powerful technique for the characterization of fluid dynamics in confined geometries or soft matter, in which relaxation may be either spin-spin (T₂) or spin-lattice (T₁). The general approach is to acquire a set of bidimensional data in which diffusion is codified by the evolution of the magnetization with either Hahn or stimulated echoes (STE) in the presence of a constant magnetic field gradient. While T₂ is codified by a Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gil (CPMG) sequence, T₁ is either encoded by saturation or inversion-recovery methods. In this work, we analyse the measurement time of diffusion-relaxation times in single-sided NMR and show that T₁-D acquisition is always shorter than D-T₂. Depending on the hardware characteristics, this time reduction can be up to an order of magnitude. We present analytical calculations and examples in model porous media saturated with water and in a dairy product.

NMR application in unconventional shale reservoirs - A new porous media research frontier

Unconventional shale reservoirs have greatly contributed to the recent surge in petroleum production in the United States and are expected to lead the US oil production to a historical high in 2018. The complexity of the rocks and fluids in these reservoirs presents a significant challenge to the traditional approaches to the evaluation of geological formations due to the low porosity, permeability, complex lithology and fluid composition. NMR has emerged as the key measurement for evaluating these reservoirs, for quantifying their petrophysical parameters, fluid properties, and determining productivity. Measurement of the T₁/T₂ ratio by 2D NMR has been found to be critical for identifying the fluid composition of kerogen, bitumen, light/heavy oils, gases and brine in these formations. This paper will first provide a brief review of the theories of relaxation, measurement methods, and data inversion techniques and then will discuss several examples of applications of these NMR methods for understanding various aspects of the unconventional reservoirs. At the end, we will briefly discuss a few other topics, which are still in their developmental stages, such as solid state NMR, and their potential applications for shale rock evaluation.

Downhole Applications of Magnetic Sensors

In this paper we present a review of the application of two types of magnetic sensors—fluxgate magnetometers and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensors—in the oil/gas industry. These magnetic sensors play a critical role in drilling wells safely, accurately and efficiently into a target reservoir zone by providing directional data of the well and acquiring information about the surrounding geological formations. Research into magnetic sensors for oil/gas drilling has not been explored by researchers to the same extent as other applications, such as biomedical, magnetic storage and automotive/aerospace applications. Therefore, this paper aims to serve as an opportunity for researchers to truly understand how magnetic sensors can be used in a downhole environment and to provide fertile ground for research and development in this area. A look ahead, discussing other magnetic sensor technologies that can potentially be used in the oil/gas industry is presented, and what is still needed in order deploy them in the field is also addressed.

NMR investigation of water diffusion in different biofilm structures

Mass transfer in biofilms is determined by diffusion. Different mostly invasive approaches have been used to measure diffusion coefficients in biofilms, however, data on heterogeneous biomass under realistic conditions is still missing. To non-invasively elucidate fluid-structure interactions in complex multispecies biofilms pulsed field gradient-nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) was applied to measure the water diffusion in five different types of biomass aggregates: one type of sludge flocs, two types of biofilm, and two types of granules. Data analysis is an important issue when measuring heterogeneous systems and is shown to significantly influence the interpretation and understanding of water diffusion. With respect to numerical reproducibility and physico-chemical interpretation, different data processing methods were explored: (bi)-exponential data analysis and the Γ distribution model. Furthermore, the diffusion coefficient distribution in relation to relaxation was studied by D-T₂ maps obtained by 2D inverse Laplace transform (2D ILT). The results show that the effective diffusion coefficients for all biofilm samples ranged from 0.36 to 0.96 relative to that of water. NMR diffusion was linked to biofilm structure (e.g., biomass density, organic and inorganic matter) as observed by magnetic resonance imaging and to traditional biofilm parameters: diffusion was most restricted in granules with compact structures, and fast diffusion was found in heterotrophic biofilms with fluffy structures. The effective diffusion coefficients in the biomass were found to be broadly distributed because of internal biomass heterogeneities, such as gas bubbles, precipitates, and locally changing biofilm densities. Thus, estimations based on biofilm bulk properties in multispecies systems can be overestimated and mean diffusion coefficients might not be sufficiently informative to describe mass transport in biofilms and the near bulk.

A method for longitudinal relaxation time measurement in inhomogeneous fields

The spin-lattice relaxation time (T₁) plays a crucial role in the study of spin dynamics, signal optimization and data quantification. However, the measurement of chemical shift-specific T₁ constants is hampered by the magnetic field inhomogeneity due to poorly shimmed external magnetic fields or intrinsic magnetic susceptibility heterogeneity in samples. In this study, we present a new protocol to determine chemical shift-specific T₁ constants in inhomogeneous fields. Based on intermolecular double-quantum coherences, the new method can resolve overlapped peaks in inhomogeneous fields. The measurement results are in consistent with the measurements in homogeneous fields using the conventional method. Since spatial encoding technique is involved, the experimental time for the new method is very close to that for the conventional method. With the aid of T₁ knowledge, some concealed information can be exploited by T₁ weighting experiments.
