Artifact Reduction in Simultaneous EEG-fMRI: A Systematic Review of Methods and Contemporary Usage

Simultaneous electroencephalography-functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) is a technique that combines temporal (largely from EEG) and spatial (largely from fMRI) indicators of brain dynamics. It is useful for understanding neuronal activity during many different event types, including spontaneous epileptic discharges, the activity of sleep stages, and activity evoked by external stimuli and decision-making tasks. However, EEG recorded during fMRI is subject to imaging, pulse, environment and motion artifact, causing noise many times greater than the neuronal signals of interest. Therefore, artifact removal methods are essential to ensure that artifacts are accurately removed, and EEG of interest is retained. This paper presents a systematic review of methods for artifact reduction in simultaneous EEG-fMRI from literature published since 1998, and an additional systematic review of EEG-fMRI studies published since 2016. The aim of the first review is to distill the literature into clear guidelines for use of simultaneous EEG-fMRI artifact reduction methods, and the aim of the second review is to determine the prevalence of artifact reduction method use in contemporary studies. We find that there are many published artifact reduction techniques available, including hardware, model based, and data-driven methods, but there are few studies published that adequately compare these methods. In contrast, recent EEG-fMRI studies show overwhelming use of just one or two artifact reduction methods based on literature published 15–20 years ago, with newer methods rarely gaining use outside the group that developed them. Surprisingly, almost 15% of EEG-fMRI studies published since 2016 fail to adequately describe the methods of artifact reduction utilized. We recommend minimum standards for reporting artifact reduction techniques in simultaneous EEG-fMRI studies and suggest that more needs to be done to make new artifact reduction techniques more accessible for the researchers and clinicians using simultaneous EEG-fMRI.

Theta Oscillations Index Frontal Decision-Making and Mediate Reciprocal Frontal-Parietal Interactions in Willed Attention

Attention can be attracted reflexively by sensory signals, biased by learning or reward, or focused voluntarily based on momentary goals. When voluntary attention is focused by purely internal decision processes (will), rather than instructions via external cues, we call this "willed attention." In prior work, we reported ERP and fMRI correlates of willed spatial attention in trial-by-trial cuing tasks. Here we further investigated the oscillatory mechanisms of willed attention by contrasting the event-related EEG spectrogram between instructional and choice cues. Two experiments were conducted at 2 different sites using the same visuospatial attention paradigm. Consistent between the 2 experiments, we found increases in frontal theta power (starting at ~500 ms post cue) for willed attention relative to instructed attention. This frontal theta increase was accompanied by increased frontal-parietal theta-band coherence and bidirectional Granger causality. Additionally, the onset of attention-related posterior alpha power lateralization was delayed in willed attention relative to instructed attention, and the amount of delay was related to the timing of frontal theta increase. These results, replicated across 2 experiments, suggest that theta oscillations are the neuronal signals indexing decision-making in the frontal cortex, and mediating reciprocal communications between the frontal executive and parietal attentional control regions during willed attention.

Marker-based ballistocardiographic artifact correction improves spike identification in EEG-fMRI of focal epilepsy patients

OBJECTIVES

Ballistocardiographic (BCG) artifacts resemble interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs) and can lead to incorrect IED identification in EEG-fMRI. This study investigates IEDs marked in EEGs corrected using information from a moiré phase tracking (MPT) marker.

METHODS

EEG-fMRI from 18 patients was processed with conventional methods for BCG removal, while 9 patients used a MPT marker. IEDs were marked first without ECG information. In a second review, suspicious IEDs synchronous with the BCG were discarded. After each review, an event-related fMRI analysis was performed on the marked IEDs.

RESULTS

No difference was found in the proportion of suspicious IEDs in the 2 patient groups. However, the distribution of IED timings was significantly related to the cardiac cycle in 11 of 18 patients recorded without MPT marker, but only 2 of 9 patients with marker. In patients recorded without marker, failing to discard suspicious IEDs led to more inaccurate fMRI maps and more distant activations.

CONCLUSIONS

BCG artifact correction based on MPT recordings allowed a more straightforward identification of IEDs that did not require ECG information in the large majority of patients.

SIGNIFICANCE

Marker-based ballistocardiographic artifact correction greatly facilitates the study of the generators of interictal discharges with EEG-fMRI.

Length matters: Improved high field EEG-fMRI recordings using shorter EEG cables

BACKGROUND

The use of concurrent EEG-fMRI recordings has increased in recent years, allowing new avenues of medical and cognitive neuroscience research; however, currently used setups present problems with data quality and reproducibility.

NEW METHOD

We propose a compact experimental setup for concurrent EEG-fMRI at 4T and compare it to a more standard reference setup. The compact setup uses short EEG cables connecting to the amplifiers, which are placed right at the back of the head RF coil on a form-fitting extension force-locked to the patient MR bed. We compare the two setups in terms of sensitivity to MR-room environmental noise, interferences between measuring devices (EEG or fMRI), and sensitivity to functional responses in a visual stimulation paradigm.

RESULTS

The compact setup reduces the system sensitivity to both external noise and MR-induced artefacts by at least 60%, with negligible EEG noise induced from the mechanical vibrations of the cryogenic cooling compression pump.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS

The compact setup improved EEG data quality and the overall performance of MR-artifact correction techniques. Both setups were similar in terms of the fMRI data, with higher reproducibility for cable placement within the scanner in the compact setup.

CONCLUSIONS

This improved compact setup may be relevant to MR laboratories interested in reducing the sensitivity of their EEG-fMRI experimental setup to external noise sources, setting up an EEG-fMRI workplace for the first time, or for creating a more reproducible configuration of equipment and cables. Implications for safety and ergonomics are discussed.

Negative BOLD in default-mode structures measured with EEG-MREG is larger in temporal than extra-temporal epileptic spikes

Introduction: EEG-fMRI detects BOLD changes associated with epileptic interictal discharges (IED) and can identify epileptogenic networks in epilepsy patients. Besides positive BOLD changes, negative BOLD changes have sometimes been observed in the default-mode network, particularly using group analysis. A new fast fMRI sequence called MREG (Magnetic Resonance Encephalography) shows increased sensitivity to detect IED-related BOLD changes compared to the conventional EPI sequence, including frequent occurrence of negative BOLD responses in the DMN. The present study quantifies the concordance between the DMN and negative BOLD related to IEDs of temporal and extra-temporal origin.

Methods: Focal epilepsy patients underwent simultaneous EEG-MREG. Areas of overlap were calculated between DMN regions, defined as precuneus, posterior cingulate, bilateral inferior parietal and mesial prefrontal cortices according to a standardized atlas, and significant negative BOLD changes revealed by an event-related analysis based on the timings of IED seen on EEG. Correlation between IED number/lobe of origin and the overlap were calculated.

Results: 15 patients were analyzed, some showing IED over more than one location resulting in 30 different IED types. The average overlap between negative BOLD and DMN was significantly larger in temporal (23.7 ± 19.6 cm³) than extra-temporal IEDs (7.4 ± 5.1 cm³, p = 0.008). There was no significant correlation between the number of IEDs and the overlap between DMN structures and negative BOLD areas.

Discussion: MREG results in an increased sensitivity to detect negative BOLD responses related to focal IED in single patients, with responses often occurring in DMN regions. In patients with high overlap with the DMN, this suggests that epileptic IEDs may be associated with a brief decrease in attention and cognitive ability. Interestingly this observation was not dependent on the frequency of IED but more common in IED of temporal origin.

Simultaneous EEG and fMRI: towards the characterization of structure and dynamics of brain networks

Progress in the understanding of normal and disturbed brain function is critically dependent on the methodological approach that is applied. Both electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are extremely efficient methods for the assessment of human brain function. The specific appeal of the combination is related to the fact that both methods are complementary in terms of basic aspects: EEG is a direct measurement of neural mass activity and provides high temporal resolution. FMRI is an indirect measurement of neural activity and based on hemodynamic changes, and offers high spatial resolution. Both methods are very sensitive to changes of synaptic activity, suggesting that with simultaneous EEG and fMRI the same neural events can be characterized with both high temporal and spatial resolution. Since neural oscillations that can be assessed with EEG are a key mechanism for multi-site communication in the brain, EEG-fMRI can offer new insights into the connectivity mechanisms of brain networks.

The dual facet of gamma oscillations: separate visual and decision making circuits as revealed by simultaneous EEG/fMRI

It remains an outstanding question whether gamma-band oscillations reflect unitary cognitive processes within the same task. EEG/MEG studies do lack the resolution or coverage to address the highly debated question whether single gamma activity patterns are linked with multiple cognitive modules or alternatively each pattern associates with a specific cognitive module, within the same coherent perceptual task. One way to disentangle these issues would be to provide direct identification of their sources, by combining different techniques. Here, we directly examined these questions by performing simultaneous EEG/fMRI using an ambiguous perception paradigm requiring holistic integration. We found that distinct gamma frequency sub-bands reflect different neural substrates and cognitive mechanisms when comparing object perception states vs. no categorical perception. A low gamma sub-band (near 40 Hz) activity was tightly related to the decision making network, and in particular the anterior insula. A high gamma sub-band (∼60 Hz) could be linked to early visual processing regions. The demonstration of a clear functional topography for distinct gamma sub-bands within the same task shows that distinct gamma-band modulations underlie sensory processing and perceptual decision mechanisms.

Single-trial EEG-fMRI coupling of the emotional auditory early posterior negativity

Event-related potential (ERP) studies in the visual domain often report an emotion-evoked early posterior negativity (EPN). Studies in the auditory domain have recently shown a similar component. Little source localization has been done on the visual EPN, and no source localization has been done on the auditory EPN. The aim of the current study was to identify the neural generators of the auditory EPN using EEG-fMRI single-trial coupling. Data were recorded from 19 subjects who completed three auditory choice reaction tasks: (1) a control task using neutral tones; (2) a prosodic emotion task involving the categorization of syllables; and (3) a semantic emotion task involving the categorization of words. The waveforms of the emotion tasks diverged from the neutral task over parietal scalp during a very early time window (132-156 ms) and later during a more traditional EPN time window (252-392 ms). In the EEG-fMRI analyses, the variance of the voltage in the earlier time window was correlated with activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, but only in the word task. In the EEG-fMRI analyses of the traditional EPN time window both emotional tasks covaried with activity in the left superior parietal lobule. Our results support previous parietal cortex source localization findings for the visual EPN, and suggest enhanced selective attention to emotional stimuli during the EPN time window.

Reducing the gradient artefact in simultaneous EEG-fMRI by adjusting the subject's axial position

Large artefacts that compromise EEG data quality are generated when electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are carried out concurrently. The gradient artefact produced by the time-varying magnetic field gradients is the largest of these artefacts. Although average artefact correction (AAS) and related techniques can remove the majority of this artefact, the need to avoid amplifier saturation necessitates the use of a large dynamic range and strong low-pass filtering in EEG recording. Any intrinsic reduction in the gradient artefact amplitude would allow data with a higher bandwidth to be acquired without amplifier saturation, thus increasing the frequency range of neuronal activity that can be investigated using combined EEG-fMRI. Furthermore, gradient artefact correction methods assume a constant artefact morphology over time, so their performance is compromised by subject movement. Since the resulting, residual gradient artefacts can easily swamp signals from brain activity, any reduction in their amplitude would be highly advantageous for simultaneous EEG-fMRI studies. The aim of this work was to investigate whether adjustment of the subject's axial position in the MRI scanner can reduce the amplitude of the induced gradient artefact, before and after artefact correction using AAS. The variation in gradient artefact amplitude as a function of the subject's axial position was first investigated in six subjects by applying gradient pulses along the three Cartesian axes. The results of this study showed that a significant reduction in the gradient artefact magnitude can be achieved by shifting the subject axially by 4 cm towards the feet relative to the standard subject position (nasion at iso-centre). In a further study, the 4-cm shift was shown to produce a 40% reduction in the RMS amplitude (and a 31% reduction in the range) of the gradient artefact generated during the execution of a standard multi-slice, EPI sequence. By picking out signals occurring at harmonics of the slice acquisition frequency, it was also shown that the 4-cm shift led to a 36% reduction in the residual gradient artefact after AAS. Functional and anatomical MR data quality is not affected by the 4-cm shift, as the head remains in the homogeneous region of the static magnet field and gradients.
