Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate bilateral soft tissue, hard and soft-tissue thickness at various anatomical levels in patients with facial asymmetries. Moreover, we attempted to find out correlation between soft-tissue compensation and severity of asymmetry by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) combined with 3D facial photographs. Study design Based on menton deviation (MD), twenty-four subjects were divided into: mild-asymmetry group (n=12) and moderate-to-severe-asymmetry group (n = 12). CBCT images were superimposed with 3D facial photographs. Distance from the midsagittal plane to the outermost point of soft-tissue and hard-tissue were measured and calculated soft-tissue thickness. Comparison of soft-tissue thickness between deviated and contralateral side at any anatomical levels were performed within group, and correlation between bilateral soft-tissue thickness subtractions (soft-tissue compensation) and MD values was evaluated. Results Within group, Soft- and hard-tissue distances were greater in deviated side than contralateral side at any levels. In moderate-to-severe group, significant differences were found at gonion and body of mandible level, whereas soft-tissue thickness was only found to be higher on deviated side at the level of mandibular ramus. Soft tissue compensation was negatively correlated with MD value at level of mandibular ramus (R = -0.5, P < 0.05). Conclusions Asymmetry was found to be larger in the lower third of the face and was notably remarkable in the moderate-to-severe group. Soft-tissue thickness was thicker on the deviated side of the mandibular ramus. Thus, the soft-tissue compensation seems to be minimized in patients with more severe asymmetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess the correlation of social smile symmetry with facial symmetry. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, frontal view photographs were obtained from 169 eligible patients at rest and smiling with a camera at the level of their nose tip. Several landmarks were selected for facial symmetry and measured at rest and social smiling at the two sides of the face. The respective formula was used to calculate the asymmetry index (AI). The mean values for each AI were calculated, and the correlation between the criteria for a symmetric smile in a social smile with the criteria for facial symmetry, and the correlation between the difference in symmetry criteria at rest and social smiling with facial symmetry criteria were analyzed. RESULTS Significant correlations were noted between Oc-b AI (smile) and Sn-B (rest) facial AI (P = 0.046), An-a (smile) AI and Gn-a (rest) facial AI (P = 0.002), An-b (smile) AI and Sn-b (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), Pog-a (smile) and Sn-a (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), Nt-a (smile) and Sn-a (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), Nt-b (smile) and Sn-b (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), Ph-a (smile) and Sn-a (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), Ph-b (smile) and Sn-b (smile) facial AI (P = 0.007), Oc-b AI (difference) and Gn-b (rest) facial AI (P = 0.031), Oc-Pog (difference) AI and Gn-b (rest) facial AI (P = 0.041), An-b (difference) AI and Sn-b (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), Nt-a (difference) and Sn-a (rest) facial AI (P = 0.006), Nt-b (difference) and Sn-b (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001), and Ph-b (difference) and Sn-b (rest) facial AI (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A significant correlation exists between social smile symmetry and facial symmetry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aims to measure the mandibular condylar height (CH), ramus height (RH), total height (CH+RH), asymmetry index, and condylar volume (Cvol) in individuals with different anteroposterior and vertical skeletal discrepancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study sample consisted of 131 subjects (60 females and 71 males) with a mean age of 35.06 ± 12.79 years. Pre-existing CBCT images were divided into groups according to the anteroposterior and vertical skeletal discrepancies. The investigator analyzed the data using t-tests to assess the mandibular bilateral sides of the individuals and gender differences. The mean difference between groups was determined using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Chi-square test was used to study the association between the asymmetry index and groups. RESULTS Each individual's bilateral sides exhibited statistically significant differences in CH, RH, and Cvol (P = 0.033, P = 0.039, P = 0.005, respectively), but not in CH+RH (P = 0.458). There were, however, statistically significant gender differences in CH+RH (P < 0.001). Skeletal Class III and hypodivergent groups revealed the highest linear and volumetric values compared to other groups. The asymmetry index was increased in CH (P = 0.006) and Cvol (P = 0.002) in skeletal Class II subjects. CONCLUSIONS Significant differences in CH, RH, and Cvol were found on the right and left sides of the same individual. This study found increased linear and volumetric values in males, skeletal Class III, and hypodivergent subjects. Class II individuals had an increased CH and Cvol asymmetry index. This study highlights in-depth knowledge of mandibular asymmetry, which is extremely important to achieve an accurate diagnosis and provide the best treatment outcome.

Abstract
Dental aesthetics is an essential factor affecting people’s psychosocial wellbeing. One of the most critical components of an aesthetic smile is symmetry within the dentition. Dentists and orthodontists, unlike laypersons, are critical in assessing dental aesthetics. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of patients’ assessment of the symmetry of their maxillary incisors and some factors that influence it. The study was conducted on 83 participants aged from 11 to 39 years. First, the participants filled out a questionnaire to obtain patients’ opinions of the symmetry of their upper incisors. This stage was followed by an intraoral examination, during which we used a digital caliper to measure the width of four maxillary incisors. The data were entered into STATISTICA v. 13.3. The following conclusions were drawn from the study. First, the respondents were generally able to determine the asymmetry of the incisors. Second, among the maxillary incisors, the participants defined the symmetry of maxillary central incisors more accurately than the maxillary lateral incisors. The cut-off value for incisor asymmetry noticeable to a layperson is 0.2 mm for maxillary medial incisors and 0.55 for maxillary lateral incisors. Third, we found no dependence of the accuracy of the assessment of incisor asymmetry on the age of the subjects; however, in our study group, the age range (spread) was not significant, so further studies are recommended. Finally, results concerning the relationship with gender showed that males assess the level of symmetry of their maxillary incisors more accurately than females.

Abstract
Background:
Historically, the development of two-dimensional (2D) imaging techniquesforerun that of three-dimensional (3D) ones. Some 2D methods are still considered valid and effective to diagnose facial asymmetry but 3D techniques may provide more precise and accurate measurements.
Objective:
The aim of this work is to analyze the accuracy and reliability of the imaging techniques available for the diagnosis of facial asymmetry in orthodontics and find the most reliable.
Methods:
A search strategy was implemented using PubMed (National Library of Medicine, NCBI).
Results:
A total of 3201 papers were identified in electronic searches. 90 articles, available in full text, were included in the qualitative synthesis consisting of 8 reviews on the diagnosis of facial asymmetry, 22 in vivo and in vitro studies on 2D methods and 60 in vivo and in vitro studies on 3D methods to quantify the asymmetry.
Conclusion:
2D techniques include X-ray techniques such as posterior-anterior cephalogram, which still represents the first level exam in the diagnosis of facial asymmetry. 3D techniques represent the second level exam in the diagnosis of facial asymmetry. The most current used techniques are CBCT, stereophotogrammetry, laser scanning, 3D optical sensors and contact digitization. The comparison between bilateral parameters (linear distances, angles, areas, volumes and contours) and the calculation of an asymmetry index represent the best choices for clinicians who use CBCT. The creation of a color-coded distance map seems to represent the most accurate, reliable and validated methods for clinicians who use stereophotogrammetry, laser scanning and 3D optical sensors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To resolve how the preferred chewing side (PCS) affects facial asymmetry in twins, whether there are differences between monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins, and whether the twins with PCS have more asymmetric faces compared to symmetrically chewing twins. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 106 Lithuanian twin pairs of the same sex, 59 MZ and 47 DZ pairs. The data were analysed from facial 3D images and manually added landmarks. 3D images were analysed by Rapidform2006 software and statistical analyses were done by using the R software environment version 4.1.0. RESULTS The contralateral effect of PCS and larger chin side was dominant among right and non-right side chewing twins. Being female increased the whole face symmetry. CONCLUSION The volume of the chin becomes larger on the side opposite to the twins' habitual chewing side. As the results are quite similar in both twin types, functional factors are more prominent than heredity.

Abstract
Condylar hyperplasia (CH) of the mandible is a rare developmental disorder that results in enlargement of the condyle. It is predominant in females, mostly unilateral and self-limiting. This report presents a case of a 35-year-old female patient with unilateral condylar hyperplasia with an increase in vertical height of mandibular ramus of the affected side. After initial radiographic evaluation, the asymmetry index using a panoramic radiograph was determined and also analyzed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Condylar dimensions in all the planes were measured for both sides using CBCT. This case report emphasizes the importance of CBCT and its role in the diagnosis and assessment of mandibular condylar hyperplasia.

Abstract
Facial symmetry refers to a complete coincidence of each facial component on the sagittal plane, while asymmetry refers to the bilateral difference between these components. The presence of perfect bilateral symmetry is almost never present in human, so it is more common for individuals to predominate facial asymmetry. However, this condition can result from functional and esthetic problems. This research seeks to determine the alternatives, diagnosis and ideal treatment plan for the correction of each type of facial asymmetry through orthognathic surgery. For this purpose, a review of articles published between 2015 to date was carried out. Selecting those that were focused on describing or evaluating facial and dentofacial symmetry and asymmetry, type of diagnosis or treatment plan, including clinical cases. The Google search engine, SciELO and databases of medical interest, such as PubMed, PMC and Medigraphic were used. According to the research and treatments carried out during the last few years in the dental clinic, it has been proven that orthognathic treatment accompanied by previous planning is the best option for the management of skeletal facial asymmetries.

Abstract
Objective This systematic review aimed to investigate the correlation between mandibular asymmetry and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Materials and Methods A systematic search of the published literature was performed in electronic databases such as PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Saudi Digital Library. Gray literature was searched through System for Information on Grey Literature through OpenGrey. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was followed in the investigation. The focussed question according to PICO format was: "does the mandibular asymmetry contribute to temporomandibular disorders"? Eligibility criteria included clinical trials (CTs), observation studies, cross-sectional and cohort studies in English that investigated mandibular asymmetries and TMD among patients. Blind and duplicate study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were carried out. Results The initial search resulted in 1906 articles, of which 11 (8 CTs, 1 cross-sectional, 1 retrospective, and 1 observational) studies were selected for qualitative synthesis after fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Conclusion Most of the studies included in this review showed either very high risk or high risk of bias. Despite the low certainty of evidence, the current study indicated a likely relationship between mandibular asymmetries and TMDs.

Facial asymmetry refers to the absence of, or the deviation from the regular mirror image of facial structures, relative to a referenced midline axis. It can be attributed to a wide spectrum of deformities, including congenital, developmental, or acquired conditions, which can originate either prenatally or postnatally. Though highly prevalent, asymmetry commonly goes undiagnosed due to its subtle or relative nature. Among the spectrum of conditions, acquired cases are triggered postnatally, in previously normal individuals, thus subjecting them to sudden, eventful psychological and psychosocial disharmony. When detected early, timely management may help intervene progressive growth of these conditions. This, therefore, emphasizes the need for a thorough diagnostic workup including medical/dental history, clinical examinations, study models, photographic and radiographic records for a case-by-case basis to prevent severe functional and aesthetic complications. Recently, advanced diagnostic procedures, such as stereophotogrammetry, 3D stereolithographic models, skeletal scintigraphy (radionucleotide scans), 3D computed tomographic scans, cone-beam computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, have provided innovative diagnostic instruments for numerous craniofacial defects. This descriptive review aims at focusing on the factors leading to frequently encountered conditions of acquired facial asymmetry and highlights their clinical evaluation, conservative and surgical interventions by a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to analyze mandibular symmetry, the occlusal plane and their correlations in patients with high-angle skeletal class III malocclusion and jaw deformity. DESIGN Reconstructed images simulated of CBCT data of 20 adult patients with high-angle skeletal class III malocclusion and jaw asymmetry (Experimental group) and 20 adult patients of skeletal class I with normal faces (Control group) were measured with a three-dimensional (3D) geometric morphological measurement system. Related landmarks, lines and planes were marked and relevant distances and angles of 3D craniofacial structures were measured. The Student t-test was performed to assess symmetry. With the help of the Pearson correlation and Linear regression, we explored the correlations and other relationships among them. RESULTS Compared with control group, the symmetrical differences in experimental group were concentrated in condyle, coracoid process, mandibular angle, mandibular first molar area and the chin (P < 0.05). A strong positive correlation was found between the degree of mandibular deviation and the inclination of the occlusal plane in the coronal position (r = 0.860, P < 0.001) and a linear relationship between them was found: Y = 1.300 + 0.419X (the inclination of occlusal plane was Y, and the mandibular deviation was X). CONCLUSIONS Certain characteristics of mandibular symmetry and the occlusal plane were found in patients with high-angle skeletal class III malocclusion and jaw asymmetry. These findings provide references for doctors to pay attention to the degree and location of mandibular asymmetry and to determine the occlusal plane.

Abstract
The correction of adolescent scoliosis involves the recreation of torso symmetry. A symmetrical torso has equivalent areas of shape on either side of the midline. The posterior torso has two areas of prominence, known as the 'most prominent points' on either side of the midline which can be used as reference points to measure symmetry of the posterior torso. This study used the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of the most prominent points, measured using ISIS2 surface topography and standardised by torso size, in children without abnormal surface topography, with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) (right thoracic curves) and with Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). The purpose was to demonstrate the variability of the position of the points in these three groups. The variability of the 3D coordinates was calculated for each group (mean, standard deviation and range in millimetres) and the standardised data were illustrated using 3D 95% confidence interval ellipsoids. In those without deformity, the position of the left and right point was mirrored with little difference. The AIS group showed a difference between the left and right points, with the right becoming further from the midline and more prominent than the left but with the left becoming more superior than the right. For the SK cohort, both left and right points moved inwards towards the midline and became more prominent. Linear mixed effect modelling was used to examine the contribution of age, kyphosis and scoliosis to the position of the most prominent points. In the cohort without abnormal surface topography, the x parameter increases with the covariates of age and kyphosis, with the covariate of age likely reflecting torso growth. The left side becomes more prominent and inferior compared to the right. In the AIS cohort, age follows the cohort without abnormal surface topography. This is added to by the scoliosis which is observed to make the right side more lateral, less inferior and more prominent, whereas the left becomes more medial, less inferior and less prominent. Kyphosis in the AIS cohort leads to the right point becoming more lateral, less inferior and less prominent whereas in the left becomes more lateral, more inferior and more prominent. In the SK cohort, the effects of the covariates of age and kyphosis are not clear reflecting the small number of cases with more than one surface topography image over time.

Abstract
This article will describe facial asymmetry secondary to facial nerve paralysis (FNP), and review current concepts, guidelines, and future trends. Despite the increasing use of botulinum toxin (BoNTA) in treating FNP, ideal dosage, timing, and additional therapies are not unequivocally established. Facial asymmetry significantly impacts quality of life (QOL) by strongly affecting self-perception and social interactions; injectables may mediate great clinical improvement. This article provides practical guidelines for the use of BoNTA and provides schemes for accurate assessment and documentation. A systematic, stepwise approach is recommended with methodical assessment, meticulous placement, conservative dosage, and careful follow-up. Future trends include the potential use of newly developed toxins, muscle modification with fillers, improved imaging techniques, and targeted QOL studies. Hopefully, a growing number of aesthetic injectors may become technically proficient and join multidisciplinary teams for managing FNP.

Abstract
Facial asymmetry is a common maxillofacial deformity which requires surgery to recover the 3-dimensional relationship of bones. The computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has been developed and applied to improve orthognathic analysis and surgery design. How to accurately realize the preoperative design of orthognathic surgery with CAD/CAM occlusal splints during operation remains a big problem. In this study, 24 consecutive patients with facial asymmetry were recruited and assigned to 2 groups. For Group A, CAD/CAM was applied to designing and producing not only the occlusal splints, but also the drilling guiding templates and pre-bent titanium plates, and for Group B CAD/CAM was applied for occlusal splints only. Postoperative clinical examinations, symmetry evaluation through 3D cephalometric analysis, accuracy comparison using color distance maps and quantitative accuracy analysis were performed. Symmetry evaluation showed that patients of both groups achieved improved facial symmetry after surgery. The color distance maps and quantitative accuracy analysis together demonstrated significantly less difference found between virtual simulated surgery and postoperative CT scan data in Group A than in Group B. In conclusion, by navigation with the drilling guiding templates and pre-bent titanium plates, the facial symmetry for patients with facial asymmetry was successfully restored after orthognathic surgery, same as applying CAD/CAM occlusal splints only. However, the drilling guiding templates and pre-bent titanium plates would provide a more accurate performance according to preoperative simulation, especially for proximal mandibular segments.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate time, reliability and accuracy of craniofacial measurements with a 3D light scanner, considering prior demarcation of surface points on the face. Materials and methods Eleven facial measurements of 15 volunteers were obtained by a scanner (Artec Eva TM) and by a caliper directly on the face, with or without demarcation of facial reference points. Inter and intra-method comparison were examined by intraclass correlation coefficient and analysis of random error by the Dahlberg formula. Agreement between the methods was analyzed by the Bland-Altman. A Wilcoxon test was used to compare the time for each method, at p < 0.05. Results Marking points on the face improved accuracy for both methods. In the inter-methods analysis with landmarks, the scanner showed excellent reliability in all measures (ICC = 0.92-0.97, p < 0.0001). Measurements accuracy with scanner was around 2 mm when the points were not previously marked and about 1 mm when the points were marked. Measures taken with the scanner, however, took twice as long, compared with the direct method. Conclusions Craniofacial measurements obtained with scanner showed excellent reliability and accuracy, which qualifies this method for clinical and scientific use. Accuracy is improved when the points were previously marked on face. However, the time needed to obtain measurements is greater than about 4 min for the direct method.

Abstract
Introdução: a cirurgia ortognática envolve a correção de desarmonias funcionais e estéticas. A hiperplasia condilar (HC) resulta em crescimento mandibular acentuado, provocando assimetria facial. Para obter previsibilidade e sucesso nos resultados, é imprescindível planejar. Objetivo: descrever e comparar métodos de planejamento e resultados pós-operatórios por meio de relato de três pacientes com assimetria facial. Relato de caso: foram avaliados 03 casos (casos A, B e C) orto-cirúrgicos de pacientes adultos jovens, com média de idade de 22 anos, portadores de má oclusão esquelética de Classe III, com assimetria facial resultante de HC inativa. Esses foram submetidos a análise facial e a dois métodos de planejamento em cirurgia ortognática (convencional e virtual). O caso A foi planejado por meio de imagens bidimensionais (2D) e sequência cirúrgica iniciada pela maxila. O caso B foi planejado por imagens 2D associado ao recurso de simulação em protótipo. E o caso C, planejado exclusivamente em imagens tridimensionais (3D) e simulação virtual. Os casos B e C utilizaram sequência cirúrgica iniciada pela mandíbula. Foi utilizado o software Dolphin Imaging® em todos os planejamentos. Os planejamentos foram transferidos para os procedimentos cirúrgicos por auxílio dos guias em resina acrílica e estereolitografia. Os pacientes dos casos relatados foram avaliados periodicamente no pós-operatório e estavam satisfeitos com os resultados. Conclusão: os planejamentos demonstraram previsibilidade e viabilidade para assimetrias faciais, pois os resultados foram satisfatórios. Houve uma tendência de melhores resultados quando a prototipagem, imagens 3D e sequência operatória iniciada pela mandíbula foram utilizadas no planejamento.
