Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical outcome of root canal treatment by obturation technique, root canal filling quality, and tooth- and patient-related variables. METHODS This clinical study investigated the endodontic outcome of 114 teeth treated between the years 2009 and 2012. Three different obturation methods were used: (1) adhesive obturation using the continuous wave of condensation technique with Resilon® (CWR), (2) matching-taper single-cone technique with gutta-percha and AH Plus® (SCGP), and (3) matching-taper single-cone technique with gutta-percha and GuttaFlow® (SCGF). Pre- and postoperative periapical radiographs were performed to detect the presence of endodontic lesions (PAI classification) and to assess the quality of both the obturation and the restoration. Tooth- and patient-related data were collected. RESULTS The overall endodontic success rate was 75.4% after a mean observation period of 6.3 years. There were no significant correlations between the type or overall quality of obturation and the treatment outcome. Teeth with preoperative lesions had the highest odds ratio (factor of 4.98) for endodontic failure. Tooth- and patient-related variables had no significant effect on endodontic outcome. CONCLUSIONS The preoperative periapical status of teeth requiring endodontic treatment was a substantial prognostic factor for endodontic outcome, whereas the type of obturation material or technique did not affect it.

Abstract
The root canal system must be obturated using a hermetic seal to prevent the penetration of microorganisms and bacterial toxins into the endodontic system. The principles of adhesive dentistry have been increasingly used in endodontics. In fact, resin-based sealers are increasingly used. The objective of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the sealing ability of resin cement in comparison with calcium hydroxide-based cement. Materials and Methods. Eighty root canals were prepared with the Tilos system and were randomly divided into four groups according to the filling material. The best combination was evaluated on the basis of its sealing ability. The dye infiltration degree was evaluated using both a stereomicroscope after diaphanization and the dye rise test. Results. A significant difference was observed between the four obturation systems with regard to the number of infiltrated walls (p=0.014) and the infiltration depth (p=0.025). The group of teeth obturated with EndoREZ® and EndoREZ® gutta cones differ significantly from the group obturated with EndoREZ® cement and gutta-percha cones in terms of apical sealing (p=0.011). A significant difference was also observed between the group of teeth obturated using EndoREZ® gutta cones and EndoREZ® cement and the group of teeth obturated with EndoREZ® cement (p=0.026). Conclusion. When used with EndoREZ® gutta cones, EndoREZ® cement showed the best sealing ability, particularly in the apical region. When used with gutta-percha cones, Acroseal and EndoREZ® cements exhibited similar sealing abilities.

Abstract
Objective: This study used microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to compare the volumes of voids and gaps in curved root canals instrumented and filled using various techniques. Methods: Twenty extracted mandibular first molars with two curved mesial root canals were used. Root canals were instrumented using a self-adjusting file (SAF) or Revo-S file system. For standardization, mesiobuccal canals were instrumented with SAF and mesiolingual canals were instrumented with Revo-S in each root. The canals were divided into four experimental groups (n=10 in each). The canals were then filled via cold lateral compaction (CLC) or a thermoplasticized injectable technique (TT) using gutta-percha and AH Plus root canal sealer. The roots were scanned with a micro-CT, and the volumes of the voids and gaps were calculated using three-dimensional (3D) micro-CT images. Data were analyzed using unpaired t- and Kruskal-Wallis tests. A value of P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: None of the tested techniques provided void- or gap-free fillings. Nevertheless, the SAF showed more gap formation than the Revo-S, and TT showed higher gap formation in all experimental groups. These differences, however, were not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion: The SAF and Revo-S rotary file systems yielded comparable results. No statistically significant difference was found between the results of the various instrumentation and filling techniques.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of different root canal filling methods on the C1 root canal anatomy using 3-dimensional (3D) printer technology. METHODS Mandibular molars were scanned with cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging. A mandibular molar tooth with a C1 root canal configuration was selected according to images obtained from CBCT technology. The root canals were shaped with ProTaper Universal rotary instruments (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and hand files. After the root canal shaping procedure, the tooth was scanned with micro-computed tomographic imaging, and 80 replicas of the tooth were produced with a 3D printer. Replicas were assigned into 4 groups (n = 20) and were filled using one of the following techniques: a core carrier system (GuttaCore [GC]; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), a continuous wave obturation system (Elements Free [CW]; Kerr/SybronEndo, Orange, CA), a cold lateral compaction technique (CLC), or the injectable cold filling method (GuttaFlow Bioseal [GFB]; Coltène/Whaledent AG, Altstatten, Switzerland). All specimens were sectioned horizontally at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm from the apices of the specimens. The sections were examined at 32× magnification under a stereomicroscope, and the percentage areas of gutta-percha, sealer, and voids were measured. Statistical analysis of data was performed using multivariate analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference tests (P < .05). RESULTS The CW group had the highest mean percentages for void and the least mean percentages for gutta-percha at 2-mm sections (P < .05). A pairwise comparison between the groups showed significantly less void in the CLC and GFB groups and more void in the CW and GC groups at 2 mm (P < .05). In the total area, the CLC and GFB groups showed a significantly lower percentage of gutta-percha and more sealer compared with the other groups (P < .05), and there was no significant difference between the CLC and GFB groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS At the apical part of the canal, the cold lateral compaction and cold injectable filling techniques were more successful compared with the warm gutta-percha filling techniques in C1 root canal configuration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the penetration of a resin/polyester polymer-based material (Resilon Real Seal; SybronEndo Corp., Orange, USA) into simulated lateral canals, and the quality of obturations by different techniques. A total of 30 standardized simulated canals were divided into three groups according to the technique of obturation used: MS (McSpadden), SB (SystemB/Obtura II), and LC (Lateral Condensation). To analyze the penetration of the filling material, the simulated canals were digitalized and the images were analyzed using the Leica QWIN Pro v2.3 software. The data of the middle and apical thirds were separately submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey's test for the comparison of the techniques. Results showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups (LC < SB) in the middle third, and a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups (LC < SB and MS < SB) in the apical third. To analyze the quality of the obturations, the canals were radiographed and evaluated by three examiners. The Kappa test on interexaminer agreement and the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test indicated no significant difference between filling techniques. It was concluded that Resilon achieves greater levels of penetration when associated with thermoplastic obturation techniques.

Abstract
Background and aims. An ideal root canal filling material should completely seal the entire root canal space and block communication between the root canal system and its surrounding tissues; it should also be nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, non-genotoxic, biocompatible, insoluble in tissue fluids and dimensionally stable. Bonding to dentin is a promising property, which can prevent leakage and improve the sealing ability of root canal filling materials. Resilon was developed and rec-ommended initially because the existing rootcanal filling materials did not bond to root canal dentin. Since its introduction in 2004, numerous reports have been published regarding various aspects of this material. The aim of this literature review is to present investigations regarding Resilon's physical and chemical properties and leakage studies. Materials and methods. A review of the literature was performed by using electronic and hand searching methods for Resilon from May 2004 to April 2012. Results. There are many published reports regarding Resilon. The searchshowed that Resilon is composed of a parent polymer, polycaprolactone or Tone, which is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester, with filler particles consisting of bioactive glass, bismuth oxychloride and barium sulfate. It possesses some antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is a promising material for root canal filling. Despite the presence of numerous case reports and case series regarding these applications, there are few designed research studies on clinical applications of this material. Resilon has some drawbacks such as high cost. Conclusion. Resilon seals well and is a biocompatible material. However, more clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy compared with other materials.

Abstract
A review of the literature on the use of carrier based obturation materials focusing on Thermafil and Resilon based obturator (RealSeal 1) are presented in this article. The review addressed the history, apical leakage, coronal leakage, biocompatibility, sealing ability and clinical success of Thermafil and RealSeal 1. Based on the studies gathered, this review concluded that both treatment techniques (Thermafil and RealSeal 1) did not provide excellent apical sealing ability. More research should be done to try to overcome their main drawback, its sealing ability.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate and compare the sealing ability between the clod lateral condensation, thermoplasticized gutta-percha, and flowable gutta-percha obturation technique, under a stereomicroscope at ×40 magnification. Materials and Methods: Sixty single rooted teeth were selected and canals were shaped with K3 NiTi files. Irrigation was performed with 5.25% NaOCl and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The teeth were then separated into three groups depending on the type of obturation technique: Group A, obturated using the lateral condensation technique and AH Plus sealer; Group B, obturated with thermoplasticized gutta-percha tech (Obtura III Max) and AH Plus sealer; and Group C, obturated using flowable gutta-percha technique (GuttaFlow). After storing the teeth in 100% humidity for 7 days at 37°C, the roots of the teeth were sectioned at five levels. The sections were then observed under a stereomicroscope at ×40 magnification and the images were analyzed for area of voids (AV) and frequency of voids. The data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS version 17 software. The 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. One-way analysis of variance with post hoc test and non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test were carried out to compare the means. Results: The lowest mean of AV was recorded in the thermoplasticized gutta-percha (Obtura III Max) group [1.0% (95% CI=0.5–1.5)]. This was statistically and significantly different from flowable gutta-percha (GuttaFlow) group [3.0% (95% CI=2.1–3.9)]. There was no significant difference between the thermoplasticized gutta-percha group and lateral condensation group [1.6% (95% CI=1.0–2.2)] with regard to the AV, but there was a statistically significant difference between the lateral condensation and flowable gutta-percha groups. The flowable gutta-percha group showed the maximum number of voids [56% (95% CI=48–64)], which was significantly higher than those in the lateral condensation [26% (95% CI=19–34)] and thermoplasticized gutta-percha [15% (95% CI=10–21)] groups. Conclusion: The thermoplasticized gutta-percha technique (Obtura III Max) had better adaptability to the canal walls when compared to the flowable gutta-percha (GuttaFlow) obturation and lateral condensation techniques.

The teeth were then separated into three groups depending on the type of obturation technique. Group A (n = 20) - obturated using the Lateral condensation technique and AHplus sealer, Group B (n = 20) - obturated with Obtura II injection-molded thermoplasticized technique and AHplus sealer, and Group C (n = 20) obturated using GuttaFlow. After storing the teeth in 100% humidity for seven days at 37°C, the roots of the teeth were sectioned at five levels. The sections were then observed under a stereomicroscope at 40 × magnification and the images were analyzed for area of voids (AV) and frequency of voids. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED The data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS version 17 software. The 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. One-way analysis of variance with post-hoc test and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was carried out, to compare the means. Abstract
INTRODUCTION This retrospective clinical and radiographic study evaluated the 8-year outcome of one-visit endodontic treatment of root canals filled with gutta-percha and a methacrylate resin-based sealer (EndoREZ). METHODS From an initial sample size of 180 patients, subsequently 145 and 120 patients were evaluated after 14-18 months and 5 years, respectively. Of the remaining patient pool of 120 patients evaluated after 5 years, 112 patients with 212 root canals responded to the 8-year recall. The outcome of treatments was assessed on the basis of clinical and radiographic criteria. Endodontic success was rated on the basis of absence of clinical symptoms, the presence of a normal or slightly widened periodontal ligament space, and absence or substantial reduction in size of preexisting periradicular radiolucencies. Teeth that did not meet these criteria were considered endodontic failures. RESULTS The root canals had been adequately filled to the working length in 90 teeth (80.35%) and were short in 19 instances (16.96%). None of the roots showing apical extrusion of the sealer immediately postoperatively had radiographic evidence of the sealer in the periradicular tissues after 8 years. At recall, all patients were comfortable and free of clinical symptoms. A life table analysis showed a cumulative probability of success of 86.5% after 8 years, with a 95% confidence interval of 79.0-92.0. CONCLUSIONS The results of this retrospective clinical and radiographic study suggest that the tested methacrylate resin-based sealer used in conjunction with gutta-percha cones performed similarly to conventional endodontic sealers during a period of up to 8 years.
