Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tooth color matching is challenging, and digital photocolorimetry using eLABor_aid (eLAB) provides objective evaluation through polarized photographs. However, its comparability with spectrophotometry remains unclear. METHODS AND MATERIALS Bovine incisor root canals (n=30) were prepared to simulate an incomplete root apex. The teeth were randomly assigned to three groups based on intracanal medication: control (without medication); calcium hydroxide/propylene glycol; and triple-antibiotic paste (n=10 each). Tooth color was assessed using both eLAB and spectrophotometry. Measurements were taken at the crown medio-cervical region on five-time intervals (baseline, 1, 3, 7, and 14 days). Statistical analysis included two-way repeated-measures ANOVA, Sidak post hoc and Pearson's correlation test (α=0.05). RESULTS No significant differences were observed between the two methods for either medication or follow-ups (p>0.05). Triple-antibiotic paste exhibited higher color variation (p<0.05). After 7 days, all groups presented significant color changes (p<0.05). Moderate to high correlations (R2 from 0.51 to 0.84, p<0.0001) were found between both methods for all groups at all intervals. CONCLUSION The eLAB is a reliable method for detecting tooth color changes, and its results are comparable to spectrophotometry analysis.

Abstract
Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are a relatively frequent occurrence, with roughly a third of adults experiencing a dental trauma at some time in their life.1 TDIs may present to dental professionals working within primary or secondary care settings. Patients presenting at the time of acute injury will require immediate management and careful long term follow up. Patients may also present later reporting a history of TDI, with developing complications and onward management required. To support dental care professionals, the International Association of Dental Traumatology's (IADT) Guidelines are available globally as a standardised tool to aid the assessment, management and follow up of dental trauma. These easy to access guidelines were updated in 2020 with four distinct publications:General Introduction,1 Fractures and Luxations,2 Avulsion of Permanent Teeth,3 and Injuries in the Primary Dentition.4 The current guidelines represent the best evidence based on available literature and expert opinion.1This paper aims to support dental professionals by specifically highlighting and describing updates in guidance, using the 2020 IADT published guidelines. By incorporating the 2020 guidelines into our everyday practice we aim to provide the most appropriate, standardised care, based on the highest level of available evidence to our patients.The full published guidelines are available free online via the IADT website.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated endodontic clinical preferences, adoption of newer technologies and information sources among dentists and endodontists. METHODS Dental and endodontic society members in Australia and New Zealand were surveyed online regarding their endodontic treatment preferences, armamentarium, information sources and continuing professional education (CPE) attendance. RESULTS Complete responses were received from 71 endodontic specialists or postgraduates (Group E) and 139 general dentists (Group D). Most of Group E used dental operating microscopes (95.8%), endodontic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT; 98.6%) and calcium silicate-based materials (CSBMs; 97.2%), significantly more (P < 0.001) than Group D (86.3% used loupes, <32% used CBCT for endodontics or CSBMs). Most respondents used dental dam always for endodontics (94.3%), electronic apex locators (EAL; 81.0%) and engine-driven nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments (91.4%); Group E had more experience with engine-driven NiTi (P < 0.001). Endodontic CPE attendance was highest at dental association programs (P < 0.001) while hands-on NiTi training attendance was highest via commercial companies (P < 0.05). Online information sources were commonly used (38.8% of Group D, 59.2% of Group E). CONCLUSION Dental dam, EAL and engine-driven NiTi were almost universally used. The endodontic group reported high adoption of newer endodontic technologies. Endodontic CPE and information sources should be further surveyed as online engagement evolves. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

Abstract
Intracoronal bleaching is a minimally invasive procedure that was introduced into dentistry in the 19th century. The role of that procedure in enhancing the colour of teeth subjected to internal discolouration while being conservative made it extremely popular amongst dental professionals. Different materials and techniques have been utilized over the years attempting to obtain predictable long-term results while minimizing any associated risks. Contemporarily, bleaching agents are mainly based on peroxide-releasing compounds in different formulations and delivery systems. Different theories have been formulated on the bleaching mechanism of such agents, but the exact mechanism is yet to be proven. The effect of hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching agents on the organic structure of enamel and dentine has been extensively investigated to address the effects of bonding of resin-based restorative materials to hard tooth structure. Multiple case reports raised a concern about the contribution of intracoronal bleaching in developing invasive root resorption. Modification of intracoronal bleaching techniques was thus necessary to address such concerns. This review will provide a summary of the important aspects of intracoronal bleaching, focusing on how it applies to the contemporary clinical setting. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and compare clinically and radiographically the effect of using two different coronal plug materials (NeoMTA versus Conventional White mineral trioxide aggregate) in revascularization of non-vital immature permanent anterior teeth, with special reference to the assessment and evaluation of discoloration potential over a period of one year. METHODS Revascularization procedure was performed in (30) immature permanent non-vital anterior teeth which were randomly allocated to two equal groups (n = 15). NeoMTA was used as coronal plug material in the Experimental Group (N), while conventional White mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) was used as a coronal plug material in the Control Group (W). All treated teeth were evaluated clinically at 1 week, 1, 3, and 12 months and radiographically at 12 months. RESULTS The overall clinical and radiographic success rate of Groups (N) and (W) at the end of the 12-month follow-up period was 100%. The discoloration was detected in a single tooth (9.1%) in Group (N) and three teeth (27.3%) in Group (W) but the difference between groups was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Both NeoMTA and conventional WMTA were successful coronal plug materials in the revascularization of non-vital immature permanent teeth achieving a high level of clinical and radiographic success. NeoMTA is a promising coronal plug material that can be used for revascularization procedures in the esthetic zone as it showed less discoloration potential compared with conventional WMTA, however, there was no statistically significant difference between both materials.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to discuss traumatic dental injuries in view of their treatment implications to provide an evidence-based resource for clinicians when planning treatment for traumatised immature maxillary incisors. Dental trauma to immature maxillary incisors can result in various complications, such as critical fractures, resorptions, or ankylosis, and might lead to tooth loss. Traumatised teeth may exhibit various unaesthetic discolourations as a result of different dental trauma sequelae or materials used for treatment. All of the above can influence patients' social experience, including self-esteem, confidence, eating and speaking abilities, as well as proper development and growth of the jaw bones. Treatment of traumatised immature incisors should focus not only on the acute phase but on the long-term consequences. Any time gained with the tooth in the jaw bone, free of infection, is an achievement, as it allows normal growth and development. All these aspects are discussed in this narrative review, and an evidence-based summary resource is suggested for clinicians to use when planning treatment for traumatised immature maxillary incisors.

Abstract
Traumatic dental injuries are a common occurrence among children. Effective acute and long-term management of traumatic dental injuries can improve patient outcomes, especially in the paediatric patient. It is important that all dental professionals follow up-to-date, evidence-based guidance when treating patients. This article aims to highlight the main changes in the 2020 International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) Guidelines for Evaluation and Management of Traumatic Dental Injuries, to ensure that all dental professionals are fully aware of current guidelines and are managing patients appropriately.

Abstract
Background Pulpal and periodontal healing are two main concerns of delayed replantation of avulsed teeth. The objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of topical and systemic application of tetracyclines on pulpal and periodontal healing after tooth replantation. Methods A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in six databases. This systematic review was carried out according to Cochrane Handbook and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Results After exclusion of 246 irrelevant papers, 14 animal studies and one human study were included in this review. The human study showed that avulsed permanent teeth treated with doxycycline did not show a better clinical outcome for pulp and periodontal healing compared with treatment with normal saline. As for animal studies, significant more pulpal healing was observed in immature teeth treated with topical doxycycline in two researches, while another one study showed that there is no difference between teeth treated with normal saline and teeth treated with doxycycline. Systemic doxycycline exerted no significant effect on pulpal revascularization illustrated by one research. Only one out of four articles illustrated the positive effect of systemic tetracyclines on periodontal healing. One paper reported that intracanal application of demeclocycline promoted favorable periodontal healing. Two articles showed topical doxycycline contributed to favorable periodontal healing, while five studies showed no significant effect of topical tetracyclines on periodontal healing. Conclusions As a result of data heterogeneity and limitations of the studies, the effect of topical or systemic application of tetracyclines on pulpal and periodontal healing is inconclusive. More studies are required to get more clinically significant conclusions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This in vitro study aimed to assess the influence of a calcium hydroxide dressing regarding the relative color change (ΔE) of enamel-dentin specimens previously exposed to antibiotic/corticosteroid pastes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty bovine enamel-dentin specimens with a cylindrical central cavity were randomly allocated to four groups: NEG (empty), POS (blood), LED (Ledermix), and ODO (Odontopaste) (n = 20 each). The materials were applied and sealed with self-adhesive resin luting material. After 3 weeks, the materials were removed and a calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) dressing was placed in all cavities. After a further 3-week storage period, the cavities were restored with resin-based composite. Spectrophotometric color measurements were taken over 6 months, and ΔE values were calculated. A Tukey's multiple comparison test was performed to assess significant differences within the treatment groups (p < 0.05). RESULTS Tooth discolorations were present after 3 weeks in LED (ΔE 29.14 ± 6.55) and POS (ΔE 18.05 ± 7.03); NEG and ODO remained color stable (ΔE 3.2 ± 1.36 and ΔE 2.3 ± 1.16). The 3-week Ca(OH)2 dressing decreased discolorations of POS (ΔE 15.93 ± 6.63; p = 0.37), whereas LED showed a further significant increase (ΔE 39.55; p < 0.0001). Between the end of the Ca(OH)2 dressing and the final restoration no significant color changes were observed in any group (p > 0.9). CONCLUSIONS Discolorations induced by LED progressed during the Ca(OH)2 dressing despite careful removal of all residues. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Calcium hydroxide might negatively affect the discoloring potential of Ledermix. This highlights the need for direct intracanal application methods of Ledermix ensuring a material-free access cavity or alternative antibiotic/corticosteroid pastes such as Odontopaste should be used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To review the key concepts of color in the dental domain with specific reference to the use of digital technology to measure color and color appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS The literature on color assessment in dentistry is considered and methods for assessing whiteness, yellowness and color appearance are collated and described. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION A variety of methods for assessing color have been shown to exist and be viable including digital imaging. Equations to predict whiteness are identified; there is evidence that they are effective but further evaluation may be needed.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate bleaching effects of common endodontic irrigants on human whole blood and blood-stained dentin. Specifically, it was assessed whether sodium hypochlorite at a clinically recommended concentration (2.5% NaOCl) would bleach with similar efficacy as a peroxide-based irrigant at higher molarity (5% H2O2). Furthermore, the effects of a NaOCl-compatible chelator with a high affinity to iron (Dual Rinse HEDP) were investigated. Methods Human whole blood was mixed at a 1:20 ratio with either phosphate-buffered saline, 9% HEDP, 2.5% NaOCl, 2.5% NaOCl containing 9% HEDP, or 5% H2O2. Effects were assessed spectrometrically and photographically. Human dentin specimens were prepared with a methacrylate reservoir for liquids and a polished assessment side over 1 mm dentin thickness. Dentin was stained using human whole blood for 3 weeks and subsequently exposed to the irrigants for 60 min. Measurements were performed in the CIELAB color space. Results were compared using parametric tests with the alpha-type error set to 5%. Results When directly exposed, the solutions containing NaOCl completely discolored the blood, while the 5% H2O2 exerted a bleaching effect without complete dissolution of dissolved matter, and the pure 9% HEDP had no effect at all. The NaOCl solutions bleached blood-stained dentin more efficiently than H2O2 (p < 0.05). Conclusions Under the current conditions, the 2.5% NaOCl solution had a stronger bleaching effect on blood and blood-stained dentin than 5% H2O2. HEDP did not have any direct impact on blood color or NaOCl-derived bleaching.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traumatic dental injuries are common. One of the most severe injuries is when a permanent tooth is knocked completely out of the mouth (avulsed). In most circumstances the tooth should be replanted as quickly as possible. There is uncertainty on which interventions will maximise the survival and repair of the replanted tooth. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2010. OBJECTIVES To compare the effects of a range of interventions for managing traumatised permanent front teeth with avulsion injuries. SEARCH METHODS Cochrane Oral Health's Information Specialist searched the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health's Trials Register (to 8 March 2018), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; 2018, Issue 2) in the Cochrane Library (searched 8 March 2018), MEDLINE Ovid (1946 to 8 March 2018), and Embase Ovid (1980 to 8 March 2018). The US National Institutes of Health Ongoing Trials Registry (ClinicalTrials.gov) and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform were searched for ongoing trials. No restrictions were placed on the language or date of publication when searching the electronic databases. SELECTION CRITERIA We considered randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials that included a minimum follow-up period of 12 months, for interventions for avulsed and replanted permanent front teeth. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently selected studies, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias. Authors were contacted where further information about their study was required. MAIN RESULTS Four studies, involving a total of 183 participants and 257 teeth were identified. Each of the interventions aimed to reduce infection or alter the inflammatory response or both at the time of or shortly after the tooth or teeth were replanted. Each study assessed a different intervention and therefore it was not appropriate or possible to numerically synthesise the data. All evidence was rated as being of very low quality due to problems with risk of bias and imprecision of results. This means that we are very uncertain about all of the results presented in this review.One study at high risk of bias with 69 participants (138 teeth) compared a 20-minute soak with gentamycin sulphate for both groups prior to replantation with the experimental group receiving daily hyperbaric oxygen for 80 minutes for the first 10 days. There was some evidence of a benefit for the hyperbaric oxygen group in respect of periodontal healing, tooth survival, and pulpal healing.One study at unclear risk of bias with 22 participants (27 teeth) compared the use of two root canal medicaments, Ledermix and Ultracal. There was insufficient evidence of a difference for periodontal healing or tooth survival. This was the only study to formally report adverse events with none identified. Study authors reported that Ledermix caused a greater level of patient dissatisfaction with the colour of avulsed and replanted teeth.A third study at high risk of bias with 19 participants compared extra- or intra-oral endodontics for avulsed teeth which were stored dry for longer than 60 minutes before replantation. There was insufficient evidence of a difference in periodontal healing.The fourth study at high risk of bias with 73 participants compared a 10-minute soak in either thymosin alpha 1 or saline before replantation followed by daily gingival injections with these same medicaments for the first 7 days. There was some evidence of a benefit for thymosin alpha 1 with respect to periodontal healing and tooth survival. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of the included studies, there is insufficient evidence to support or refute the effectiveness of different interventions for avulsed and replanted permanent front teeth. The overall quality of existing evidence was very low, and therefore great caution should be exercised when generalising the results of the included trials. There is urgent need for further well-designed randomised controlled trials.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this study was to assess coronal discoloration induced by the following intracanal medicaments: calcium hydroxide (CH), a mixture of CH paste and chlorhexidine gel (CH/CHX), and triple antibiotic paste (3Mix). Materials and Methods Seventy extracted single-canal teeth were selected. Access cavities were prepared and each canal was instrumented with a rotary ProTaper system. The specimens were randomly assigned to CH, CH/CHX, and 3Mix paste experimental groups (n = 20 each) or a control group (n = 10). Each experimental group was randomly divided into 2 subgroups (A and B). In subgroup A, medicaments were only applied to the root canals, while in subgroup B, the root canals were completely filled with medicaments and a cotton pellet dipped in medicament was also placed in the pulp chamber. Spectrophotometric readings were obtained from the mid-buccal surface of the tooth crowns immediately after placing the medicaments (T1) and at 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), and 3 months (T4) after filling. The ∆E was then calculated. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), 3-way ANOVA, and the Scheffé post hoc test. Results The greatest color change (ΔE) was observed at 3 months (p < 0.0001) and in 3Mix subgroup B (p = 0.0057). No significant color change occurred in the CH (p = 0.7865) or CH/CHX (p = 0.1367) groups over time, but the 3Mix group showed a significant ΔE (p = 0.0164). Conclusion Intracanal medicaments may induce tooth discoloration. Use of 3Mix must be short and it must be carefully applied only to the root canals; the access cavity should be thoroughly cleaned afterwards.

Abstract
Tetracyclines are a unique class of antibiotics which also have additional effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-resorptive and substantive within the root canal. There has been a long-held view that tetracycline medicaments discolour teeth and should be avoided. The evidence base around this topic was explored, including a review of the methodology used in laboratory studies. A search of PubMed, Medline and Scopus databases was conducted to identify studies of demeclocycline and doxycycline medicaments used in root canal therapy. An analysis of the methodology used in these studies was performed to determine if these replicate current clinical practice. The related literature on mechanisms of tetracycline stability and the effects of light, oxidation, moisture and chemical interactions was examined. Studies investigating the effects of Ledermix paste on segments of bovine dentine and avulsed or reimplanted teeth as well as combinations with other antibiotics were excluded from this review. Even though demeclocycline medicament pastes were introduced in 1962, the first laboratory studies of discolouration were not done until 2000. All later studies followed a similar approach, which included exposure to sodium hypochlorite for up to 30 minutes and storage in moist conditions with 100% humidity. Staining during dark storage and enhanced staining on exposure to light were reported, indicating multiple pathways of degradation of demeclocycline and its reaction products. Light, moisture and oxidation are the key factors which drive discolouration from demeclocycline. Clinical issues from tooth staining can be prevented by removal of medicament pastes from the access cavity, and placement of a sound interim restoration. Use of a doxycycline paste obviates concerns of staining. Laboratory assessments of the potential for staining should replicate in vivo conditions.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the treatment outcomes of a revitalization endodontic technique (RET) for the management of traumatized immature teeth with necrotic pulps in children. METHODOLOGY Fifteen healthy children (age range = 7-10 years) with traumatized immature maxillary incisors with necrotic pulps treated with bi-antibiotic revitalization endodontic technique were prospectively assessed over approximately two years (mean = 22 months). One operator undertook all treatments, clinical reviews and standardized radiographic exposures with radiographic analysis being carried out by two calibrated experienced clinicians. Crown colour change was assessed using an objective published methodology. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare root lengths, root dentinal widths and apical foramen widths over time. RESULTS Interoperator measurement reliability was consistently strong for all measurements. There was no significant difference in root lengths or root dentinal wall widths following RET. A significant difference in apical foramen widths was observed after 2 years (P = 0.013) with resolution of clinical signs of infection in all cases. Despite omitting minocycline and using Portland cement (nonbismuth containing cement), a noticeable crown colour change (yellower, redder and lighter), as measured by an objective colour measurement system with ΔE = 7.39, was recorded. Most patients, however, were satisfied with the aesthetic outcome. CONCLUSION Traumatized immature teeth with necrotic pulps treated with revitalization endodontic technique did not demonstrate continuation of root development or dentine formation when assessed by periapical radiographs. However, apical closure and periodontal healing were observed. A measurable change in crown colour (yellower, redder and lighter), with mostly no aesthetic concern to the patients/parents, was also observed.

Abstract
Background Optimal antibacterial efficacy of intracanal medicaments containing silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) has been well documented. However, concerns remain regarding the effect of Ag-NPs on tooth color. This study aimed to assess the effects of calcium hydroxide (CH) mixed with Ag-NPs as intracanal medicaments on tooth color. The effect of location of application of medicament on the degree of discoloration was evaluated as well. Material and Methods Fifty extracted single-rooted, single-canal human teeth with straight roots, no caries, no cracks or fractures were collected and accessed. After cleaning and shaping of the root canals, the teeth were randomly divided into two experimental groups (n=20) with CH and CH plus Ag-NPs as intracanal medicaments and a control group of saline (n=10). Experimental groups were randomly divided into two equal subgroups of A, where medicament was applied below the cemento enamel junction (CEJ) and B where the medicament was applied to the root canal and pulp chamber. Color change (ΔE) was assessed using a spectrophotometer in CIELAB system at five time points of beforemedicaments application (T0), immediately medicaments placement (T1), one week (T2), one month (T3) and three months (T4) after the application of medicaments. Data were analyzed using two-way and three-way ANOVA. Results Color change in Ag-NPs plus CH and CH groups was not significantly different at any time point (P=0.23). Increased exposure time in both groups did not increase the ΔE (P >0.05). Significant differences were noted in ΔE between subgroups A and B (P<0.05). Conclusions Addition of Ag-NPs to CH caused no significant change in tooth color compared to the application of CH alone. However, its use must be limited to the root canal space only. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM It is widely acknowledged that children should participate in healthcare decisions, service development and even setting research agendas. Dental traumatology is a major component of paediatric dentistry practice and research. However, little is known about young patients' contribution to new knowledge in this field. The aim of the study was to establish the extent to which children are involved in contemporary dental trauma research and to evaluate the quality of the related literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic review of the dental trauma literature was conducted from 2006 to 2014. The electronic databases, MEDLINE and Scopus, were used to identify relevant studies. The selected papers were independently examined by five calibrated reviewers. Studies were categorized by the degree of children's involvement and appraised using a validated quality assessment tool. RESULTS The initial search yielded 4374 papers. After application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 96 studies remained. Research on children accounted for 87.5% of papers, and a proxy was involved in 4.2%. Children were engaged to some degree in only 8.3% of studies, and there were no studies where children were active research participants. In the quality assessment exercise, papers scored, on average, 57% (range = 14-86%). CONCLUSION There is scope to encourage more active participation of children in dental trauma research in the future. Furthermore, there are some areas where the quality of research could be improved overall.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of changing the sodium perborate-tetrahydrate (PBS-4) at a 4-day interval versus no change after 16 days of internal bleaching. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two hundred and ten bovine enamel-dentin discs were discolored for 3.5 years with 14 different endodontic materials. All groups with a discoloring index of ∆E (mean) ≥ 5.5 were included in the present investigation: ApexCal (APCA), MTA white + blood (WMTA+BL), Portland cement + blood (PC+BL), blood (BL), MTA gray (GMTA), MTA gray + blood (GMTA+BL), Ledermix (LED), and triple antibiotic paste containing minocycline (3Mix). Fourteen specimens of each group were randomly assigned into two treatment groups: (1) no change of the PBS-4 (n = 7); (2) change of the PBS-4 every 4 days (n = 7). Color measurements were taken at 10 different time intervals and the L*a*b* values were recorded with a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade® compact). RESULTS In the group 3Mix, significantly better results were achieved by changing the bleaching agent every 4 days (P = 0.0049; q = 0.04), while the group WMTA+BL indicated better results by no change of the bleaching agent (P = 0.0222, q = 0.09). All remaining groups showed no statistical difference between the two treatment procedures. CONCLUSIONS Moderate discolorations can be successfully treated without changing the bleaching agent over a period of 16 days. Changing the sodium perborate-tetrahydrate every 4 days is preferred in case of severe discolored enamel-dentin discs only. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This approach may offer a reduced number of clinical appointments and a secondary cost reduction to the patient.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Calcium hydroxide (CH) is one of the most common intracanal medications. Corticosteroids (CS) are used in endodontics because of their anti-inflammatory activity. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of CH+betamethasone and CH+saline against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) using agar diffusion test and measuring the microbial zone of inhibition (ZOI). METHODS AND MATERIALS Four plates containing Mueller-Hinton broth and E. faecalis culture media, were prepared. In each plate, 5 holes (5×3 mm) were created and a creamy mixture of CH+betamethasone was inserted into the holes (10 holes for each material). Two holes with ampicillin disks and two empty holes were used as negative and positive controls, respectively. Plates were incubated for 24 h and then the diameter of microbial ZOI was measured. The pH of each mixture was measured by pH meter. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS The mean diameter of ZOI for CH+betamethasone and CH+saline was 3.4 and 3 mm, respectively. The difference was not significant (P=0.143). The pH was 12.5 for CH+saline and 12.3 CH+betamethasone, respectively. CONCLUSION The mixture of CH+betamethasone had good antimicrobial effects against E. faecalis. Further studies are needed to confirm the value of this mixture in clinical settings.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro the antimicrobial effect and diffusion against E. faecalis of new intracanal medications on the external root surface. The medications tested were a placebo gel (PC); the new formulations with either 3% nitrofurantoin (NIT) or 3% doxycycline hydrochloride (DX) and 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel as positive control. The new formulations were tested using the traditional agar diffusion test (ADT) and an adapted agar diffusion method (AADM), where the teeth were filled with the medications and left to diffuse on agar surface seeded with E. faecalis. In the ADT, the larger zones of microbial growth inhibition were seen in DX, followed by CHX and NIT. In the AADM test only DX and CHX showed antimicrobial effect. Statistically significant differences between groups were observed by the Kruskal-Wallis test (2=47.126; p<0.001). The new intracanal formulations with DX and NIT have demonstrated antimicrobial effect against E. faecalis, but only DX was able to diffuse through the dentinal tubules and exert antimicrobial effect outside the roots.

Abstract
AIMS This study examined the extent to which intervisit corticosteroid-based antibiotic pastes (CAP) medicaments contribute to staining of tooth structure after attempted removal by irrigation techniques. METHODS A total of 140 roots were prepared and the canals were filled with Ledermix paste (demeclocycline), Odontopaste (clindamycin), and Doxypaste (doxycycline). The pastes were removed after 2 or 4 weeks of storage in the dark using EDTA and NaOCl with either a 27-gauge-slotted needle or an EndoActivator (Dentsply). The roots were then exposed to an intense light source for 30 minutes each week and photographed after a further 1, 3, or 6 months. Digital images were standardized and data for changes in luminosity were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA and a post hoc test. RESULTS Removal of the medicament did not prevent later discolouration. There was no significant difference between the paste removal methods. Ledermix paste caused the greatest darkening compared to the untreated controls, for both application periods and both methods of removal. Doxypaste and Odontopaste caused less darkening than Ledermix. CONCLUSION Medicaments that stain teeth may continue to discolour teeth despite best attempts to remove them. This study stresses the importance of material selection and minimising contact of Ledermix within the coronal aspects of teeth.

Abstract
Avulsion of permanent teeth is one of the most serious dental injuries, and a prompt and correct emergency management is very important for the prognosis. The International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) has developed a consensus statement after a review of the dental literature and group discussions. Experienced researchers and clinicians from various specialties were included in the task group. The guidelines represent the current best evidence and practice based on literature research and professionals' opinion. In cases where the data did not appear conclusive, recommendations were based on the consensus opinion or majority decision of the task group. Finally, the IADT board members were giving their opinion and approval. The primary goal of these guidelines is to delineate an approach for the immediate or urgent care of avulsed permanent teeth.

Abstract
Advances in endodontic materials and techniques are at the forefront of endodontic research. Despite continuous improvements, tooth discolouration, especially in anterior teeth, is considered an undesirable consequence following endodontic treatment as it creates a range of aesthetic problems. This article aims to discuss the intrinsic and internalized tooth discolouration caused by endodontic procedures, and to address the discolouration potential of materials used during root canal treatment, including root canal irrigants, intra-canal medicaments, endodontic and post-endodontic filling materials. In addition, the discolouration patterns caused by combined endodontic and nonendodontic aetiological factors are discussed. The recommended guidelines that should be followed by dental practitioners to prevent and manage tooth discolouration are also outlined.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the discoloration potential of endodontic materials using a bovine tooth model. METHODOLOGY Two hundred and 10 dentine-enamel cuboid blocks (10 × 10 × 3.5 mm) were prepared out of the middle thirds of bovine tooth crowns. Standardized cavities were prepared in the walls of the pulp chamber leaving 2 mm of enamel and dentine on the labial wall of the crown. The specimens were randomly assigned to 14 groups (n = 15). Endodontic materials were placed into the cavities as follows: group A: empty, group B: blood, group C: calcium hydroxide, group D: ApexCal, group E: Ultracal XS, group F: Ledermix, group G: triple antibiotic paste (3Mix), group H: grey MTA(GMTA), group I: GMTA + blood, group J: white MTA (WMTA), group K: WMTA + blood, group L: Portland cement (PC), group M: PC + blood and group N: AH Plus. The cavities were sealed with composite and stored in water. Standardized colour measurement (VITA Easyshade compact) was performed at the following intervals: prior to (T0) and after placement of the filling (T1), 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), 3 months (T4), 6 months (T5) and after 1 year (T6). Colour change (ΔE) values were calculated. A two-way analysis of variance was used to assess significant differences between the endodontic materials. The mean values of all groups were compared using the Tukey multiple comparison test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences were detected amongst the experimental groups after 12 months (P < 0.0001). The lowest colour change values were observed in the groups N (AH Plus, 3.2 ± 1.5), A (empty, 3.8 ± 1.4), L (PC, 4.1 ± 1.7), C (calcium hydroxide, 4.7 ± 1.5), E (Ultracal XS, 5.1 ± 1.9) and J (WMTA, 7.9 ± 6.7). The most discoloration was measured in groups G (3Mix, 66.2 ± 9.9) and F (Ledermix, 46.2 ± 11.6). PC showed the best colour stability amongst the Portland cement-based materials; however, when contaminated with blood (group M), a significantly higher ΔE value (13.6 ± 4.2) was detected (P = 0.032). CONCLUSION Materials used in endodontics may stain teeth. Therefore, the choice of material should not rely solely on biological and functional criteria, but also take aesthetic considerations into account.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the chemical interaction of calcium hydroxide with the corticosteroid triamcinolone acetonide in Ledermix Paste and in Odontopaste, a new steroid/antibiotic paste. METHODOLOGY Validated methods were developed to analyse the interaction of calcium hydroxide in two forms, Pulpdent Paste and calcium hydroxide powder, with triamcinolone acetonide within Odontopaste and Ledermix Paste. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyse the mixed samples of the pastes and calcium hydroxide. The concentration of triamcinolone acetonide within the pastes was determined over 0, 2, 6, 24 and 72-h time-points. All tests with the HPLC involved the testing of the standard with triplicate injections alongside the samples. All samples were tested in duplicate with each injected twice; therefore, four tests were performed for each investigation. Linearity, precision and specificity of the testing procedures and apparatus were validated. Descriptive statistics are provided. RESULTS In both pastes, there was a marked rapid destruction of the triamcinolone acetonide steroid upon mixing with calcium hydroxide. Odontopaste suffered a lower rate of destruction of the triamcinolone acetonide component than Ledermix Paste, but both pastes showed very similar degrees of steroid destruction after 72 h. When using calcium hydroxide powder with Ledermix Paste, the triamcinolone was destroyed entirely and immediately. CONCLUSION The addition of calcium hydroxide to Odontopaste or Ledermix Paste results in the rapid destruction of the steroid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-setting calcium hydroxide (Ultracal XS(®) ) is recommended by the International Association of Dental Traumatology as the initial medicament following avulsion and replantation for mature teeth. There is experimental evidence to suggest Ledermix(®) , placed as an alternative inter-visit dressing may improve periodontal healing. AIM This study investigated, using a multi-centre randomized controlled trial, the effect of two root canal medicaments, Ledermix(®) and Ultracal XS(®) , on periodontal healing of avulsed and replanted teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS Children were recruited if they fulfilled all inclusion criteria. Treatment followed a standardized protocol. Assessment of periodontal healing or ankylosis was made clinically and radiographically by an experienced, 'blinded', clinician at 12months. RESULTS Over 200 patients were assessed for eligibility at five centres. Twenty-nine patients were eligible for inclusion. Final analysis involved 22 patients with 27 teeth. Ankylosis was detected in four of the 12 teeth in the Ledermix(®) group and nine of 15 in the Ultracal XS(®) group. No significant difference between medicaments was found in the proportion of teeth or patients showing periodontal healing. DISCUSSION There was no significant difference in periodontal healing between the two medicaments at either a tooth or patient level. The numbers recruited fell short of an estimated power calculation. For patients meeting the inclusion criteria and completing the trial, periodontal healing was seen in 52% of teeth at the 12-month assessment between both groups. The only factor found to significantly influence the periodontal outcome was dry time.
