Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate how preset torque settings influence the torque, vertical force, and root canal-centering ability of ProGlider and ProTaper NEXT nickel-titanium rotary instruments in canals with different curvature locations. Based on micro-computed tomography, mesial roots of human mandibular molars (25°-40° curvature) were allocated to the apical curvature (apical 1-5 mm) or the middle curvature (apical 5-9 mm) groups, and mandibular incisors (curvature <5°) to the straight canal group. Each group was subjected to automated instrumentation and torque/force measurement with the preset torque of 1, 2.5, or 5 N•cm. Canal-centering ratios were determined with micro-computed tomography. Instrument fracture occurred only in the 2.5 and 5 N•cm groups in curved canals. The preset torque setting and curvature location did not influence canal shaping ability.

Abstract
AIM This study was twofold: (i) it aimed to investigate the morphometric changes of three temperature-sensitive nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments at different temperatures, and (ii) to conduct an in vivo real-time analysis of intracanal temperature changes. METHODS Changes in the shape and length of XP-Endo Shaper, XP-Endo Finisher, and XP-Endo Finisher-R were evaluated in real time whilst heated in a temperature-controlled water bath from 22 to 45°C. Instruments were fixed to a laminated water-resistant 1 mm graph paper attached to a stone block. Instruments were imaged whilst subjected to increasing temperature using a digital camera attached to an operating microscope. From recorded videos, still frames were extracted at 10-s intervals and changes in the length and shape of each instrument were measured and changes were plotted against time. Moreover, the intracanal temperature of distal roots of lower molars was measured in vivo for patients attending the clinic for non-surgical root canal treatments. The temperature was measured using a K-type thermocouple probe inserted into the mid-root level after irrigating the canal with a solution set at room temperature (22°C) or heated to 45°C. The intraoral and intracanal temperatures were recorded using a video camera for 180 s at 5-s intervals to plot the change in the intraoral and intracanal temperature, after both irrigation solution temperatures, with time. RESULTS The shape transformation of XP-Endo Shaper began at 31.5 ± 2.0°C and reached its optimal transformation at 35.1 ± 1.0°C. For the Finisher and Finisher-R, shape transformations began at 29.2 ± 1.9 and 26.9 ± 2.2°C reaching the optimal transformation at 33.9 ± 1.4 and 32.7 ± 1.7°C, respectively. The average decreases in lengths of XP-Endo Shaper, Finisher, and Finisher-R after full transformation were 0.43 ± 0.23, 1.07 ± 0.22, and 1.15 ± 0.22 mm, respectively. The intracanal temperature reached 32.9 ± 0.8 and 33.2 ± 1.0°C after 3 min of application of irrigation solutions set at 22 or 45°C, respectively. CONCLUSION The tested instruments exhibited diverse changes in their shapes and lengths at varying temperatures. Despite the temperature of the irrigation solution, the intracanal temperature consistently remained lower than the intracanal temperature once equilibrium was reached. This highlights the importance of considering the temperature of irrigation solution during in vitro testing of endodontic instruments.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to investigate the 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) penetration into the dentinal tubules after different irrigation methods. Seventy canines were stained with 1% crystal violet and divided into groups (n = 20): GEC-EasyClean; GPUI-E1 Irrisonic ultrasonic insert; GXP-XP-Endo finisher; GPC-conventional irrigation and GNC-stained tooth without irrigation. Axial sections (16×) were assessed and irrigant penetration was quantified as a bleaching halo on the surface of the apical, middle and coronal third. In the apical third, GPUI promoted greater NaOCl penetration (p < 0.05). GXP was better than GEC (p < 0.05), as was GPC (p > 0.05). The GPUI and GXP groups were similar in the middle and coronal third (p > 0.05). GPUI and GXP showed better results than GEC (p < 0.05). GPUI was more effective in the apical third and like GXP in the cervical and middle third.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two sodium hypochlorite concentrations at different exposure times and temperatures against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms of varying ages in human dentinal tubules. Dentin blocks were infected with E. faecalis for either 3 days or 3 weeks of incubation. Subsequently, the samples were exposed to sterile water, 2%, and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite for 3 and 10 min at 20 °C and 60 °C . Viability staining and confocal laser scanning microscopy were used to assess the proportion of killed bacteria in the dentinal tubules after exposure. There are no significant differences in the efficacy of E. faecalis killing between 2% sodium hypochlorite at 60 °C for various exposure times and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite at different temperatures or exposure times (P > 0.05). When both solutions were compared at the same temperatures with a 10-min exposure time, no significant differences in the effectiveness of E. faecalis killing between 2% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite were observed (P > 0.05). To optimize the effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite in killing E. faecalis while minimizing potential damage to root dentin and soft tissue, clinicians should prioritize increasing the temperature or exposure time of sodium hypochlorite, rather than raising its concentration.

Abstract
Background This study aims to analyze the phase transformation behavior and evaluate the effect of different temperatures on the fracture strength of files. Methodology A total of 108 files were used, and cyclic fatigue tests were performed on HyFlex EDM, VDW.ROTATE, and TruNatomy at three different temperatures (+4°C, +35°C, and +60°C) The time to fracture of files was measured, and the number of cycles was calculated. In addition, the fractured fragment lengths were measured. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the data that were not normally distributed according to groups. The Mann-Whitney U test was performed for comparisons. P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results As the temperature increased for all files, the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) decreased. NCF was significantly higher for ROTATE at 4°C and 60°C and HyFlex EDM at 35°C. Conclusions The resistance to cyclic fatigue in all files decreased significantly as the temperature increased.

Abstract
Context TwinKleen™ and Triton™ are newer all-in-one irrigants that have simultaneous action on both organic and inorganic contents. Studies comparing their tissue dissolving ability (TDA) either at room temperature (RT) or on prewarming (PW) and continuous warming (CW) are not yet reported. Aims To evaluate and compare the effect of 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), Twin Kleen™, and Triton™, on the bovine TDA. Materials and Methods One hundred and twenty tissue specimens (size 4 mm × 4 mm × 2 mm and weight 37 ± 3 mg) were divided into Group 1, normal saline (negative control); Group 2, 3% NaOCl (positive control); Group 3, Twin Kleen™; and Group 4, Triton™ (n = 30) Each group is further divided into three subgroups with ten samples each as sub group a - at room temperature (RT), sub group b - on pre warming (PW) and sub group c- on continuous warming (CW), Tissue specimens were immersed in test tubes with 5 ml of respective irrigants replenished thrice every 15 min. The percentage difference in tissue weights was calculated after 5, 10, and 15 min. Statistical Analysis Used Multiple intergroup comparisons were done using Tukey's multiple-comparison test, using SPSS software version 23.0. Results Both Triton™ and 3% NaOCl showed significantly higher dissolution than normal saline and Twin Kleen™ on CW followed by PW than at RT. Twin Kleen™ showed significantly less dissolution at all the tested temperatures. Conclusions Heating enhances the TDA of Triton™ and 3% NaOCl but not Twin Kleen™. CW showed significantly higher dissolution than PW.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review/meta-analysis investigated the influence of NaOCl on cyclic fatigue resistance of endodontic NiTi instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic search until July 2022 in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, Cochrane Library, and grey literature was conducted. According to the PECOS strategy, only in vitro studies evaluating the effects of NaOCl on the cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi instruments were eligible. Cyclic fatigue resistance was the primary outcome. A modified Joanna Briggs Institute's Checklist was used for risk of bias assessment. RESULTS Of the 2,445 records screened, 37 studies were included. Most studies used simulated canals made of stainless-steel block with severe to moderate curvatures. NaOCl concentration varied from 1-6%, mainly at 37 °C. Regarding fatigue resistance, 23 studies using 1.2% to 6% NaOCl showed a reduction in the resistance compared to the control groups, especially when pre-heated. Four meta-analyses were performed according to the tested NiTi systems. The meta-analyses indicated that the PTU F2 files had higher reduction of fatigue resistance after exposure to 5.25% NaOCl; no differences between NaOCl and no immersion were observed for Reciproc R25, WaveOne 25.08, and WaveOne Gold Primary files. Included studies had low risk of bias. CONCLUSION NaOCl appears to reduce cyclic fatigue resistance of certain NiTi files, especially when they are pre-heated, particularly in conventional NiTi files compared to some heat-treated instruments. It is possible that the temperature of the solution may have a greater influence on resistance than NaOCl itself. Important to note that an overall tendency toward no significant influence was observed among various systems. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Precautions are necessary when a pre-heated high-concentration NaOCl is used to enhance its properties during root canal preparation, mainly using conventional wire.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the phase composition, phase transformation temperatures, bending property, and cyclic fatigue resistance of different heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments with the same tip diameter and taper at room (RT; 25 ± 1 °C) and body (BT; 37 ± 1 °C) temperatures. METHODS Five heat-treated NiTi rotary instruments, HyFlex EDM (EDM), HyFlex CM (CM), Vortex Blue (VB), RE file CT (RE) and JIZAI, and a non-heat-treated NiTi rotary instrument (Mtwo) with a size 40, 0.04 taper were investigated. Temperature-dependent phase transformation was examined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The bending loads of the instruments at RT and BT were evaluated using a cantilever-bending test. Cyclic fatigue resistance at RT and BT was measured using a dynamic test, during which the instruments were rotated in combination with a 2-mm back-and-forth motion in an artificial curved canal, and the number of cycles to failure (NCF) was determined. The results were analyzed using two-way repeated measures analysis of variance, a simple main effect test, and the Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). RESULTS DSC results indicated that EDM and Mtwo were primarily composed of martensite/R-phase and austenite, respectively, while the other heat-treated instruments were composed of a mix of martensite/R-phase and austenite at the tested temperatures. Regardless of the temperature setting, the bending loads of heat-treated instruments were significantly lower than those of Mtwo (p < 0.05). EDM showed the lowest bending loads and highest NCF at both temperatures (p < 0.05). CM, VB, and JIZAI showed significantly higher bending loads at BT than at RT (p < 0.05). The NCF of all the heat-treated instruments, except VB, was lower at BT than at RT (p < 0.05). At BT, the NCF of CM, VB, RE, and JIZAI were not significantly higher than that of Mtwo (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Heat-treated NiTi instruments exhibited lower bending loads and higher NCF values than Mtwo. However, this tendency was less pronounced at BT than at RT, especially in the NCF values of instruments with a mixture of martensite/R-phase and austenite phases at the tested temperatures.

Abstract
Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, yapay kanallar kullanılarak yeni ve kullanılmış Revo-S nikel titanyum döner eğe sisteminin döngüsel yorgunluk (DY) dirençlerinin karşılaştırılmasıdır.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Her gruptan 12 adet olmak üzere toplam 72 adet yeni ve 2 defa klinikte kullanılmış Revo-S SC1 (25/.06), Revo-S SC2 (25/.04) ve Revo-S SU (25/.06) eğeler çalışmaya dahil edildi. DY direnci testleri için iç çapı 1.5 mm olan, 60° eğrilik açısı ve 5 mm eğrilik yarıçapına sahip olan kavisli bir yapay kanal içeren paslanmaz çelik blok kullanıldı. Deney sistemi distile su ile dolduruldu ve ortam sıcaklığı 35 ± 1 °C sıcaklıkta sabit tutuldu. Eğeler kırılma gerçekleşene kadar yapay kanal içinde çalıştırıldı. Her eğe için kırılma gerçekleşene kadar geçen süre kronometre ile kaydedildi ve eğelerin kırılıncaya kadar yaptıkları tur sayısı hesaplandı. Elde edilen veriler tek yönlü varyans analizi ve post-hoc Tukey testi kullanılarak değerlendirildi.
Bulgular: Eğelerin kırılıncaya kadar yaptığı ortalama tur sayısı en yüksek yeni SC2 eğe grubunda (912.3 ± 76.8), en düşük ise kullanılmış SU eğe grubunda (204.2 ± 59.6) bulundu. SC1 ve SC2 eğeler için yeni ve kullanılmış eğeler arasında DY direnci açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark gözlenmez iken (p>0.05), SU eğe grubunda anlamlı bir fark bulundu (p<0.05).
Sonuç: Çalışmamızın sınırlamaları dahilinde; klinik kullanım sonrasında tüm eğelerin DY direncinde azalma olduğu ancak bu azalmanın sadece SU eğe grubunda önemli olduğu bulundu.

Abstract
Background Although irrigation is one of the most important stages during root canal treatment, it is not possible to guarantee the entry of irrigants to all the areas in the root canal, especially in the apical third. Therefore, the activation of irrigants can stimulate and help the irrigants to access hard-to-reach places within the root canal system. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the opening of the dentinal canals with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) using different irrigant activation techniques, such as intracanal heating activation, sonic activation, and ultrasonic activation, along the walls of the root canals in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. Methodology The study sample consisted of 36 single-canal premolars, which were randomly divided into the following three equal groups according to the method of activation used: group 1 (n = 12), which involved heating activation inside the root canals, group 2 (n = 12), which involved sonic activation, and group 3 (control; n = 12), which involved ultrasonic activation. Afterward, dental crowns were cut to standardize the working length by 18 mm and were then prepared using the ProTaper Next system up to size X2. Moreover, the irrigant was activated for each group separately, and the teeth were extracted and prepared for SEM. Three images were taken for each sample (i.e., coronal third, middle third, and apical third) at ×2,000 magnification. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results When studying the removal of the smear layer and the opening of the dentinal canal under ×2,000 magnification, there were no statistically significant differences in the coronal and middle third between the three studied groups. However, statistically significant differences were found in the apical third, where the ultrasonic activation group was the best, followed by the sonic activation group, and the heating activation group. Conclusions All methods of activation were effective in removing the smear layer and opening the dentinal canals with the advantage of ultrasonic activation in the rest of the groups. The intracanal heating irrigant activation proved to be similar to the effectiveness of sonic activation and close to ultrasonic activation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To evaluate torsional, dynamic and static cyclic fatigue resistance of the reciprocating One Reci (OR, Micromega, Besançon, France), WaveOne Gold (WOG, Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), rotary One Curve (OC, MicroMega, Besançon, France) and ProTaper Next X2 (PTN X2, Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) instruments. METHODS A total of 120 NiTi instruments (n = 30) OR, WOG, OC and PTN X2 were used. Torque and rotation angle until failure under static torsion loading were measured according to the ISO 3630-1. Static and dynamic fatigue resistance was measured as the time to fracture (TTF) in an artificial stainless-steel canal with a 60° angle and 5-mm radius of curvature at intracanal temperature. The results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests. The alpha-type error was set at 5%. Fracture instruments from torsion and fatigue tests were examined with scanning electron microscope. RESULTS The OR showed higher static fatigue resistance and rotation angle at fracture than the WOG, OC and PTN X2 (P < .05). The WOG exhibited higher torsional resistance than the others (P < .05). Dynamic cyclic fatigue resistance tests had highest TTF than static for the PTN X2 and the WOG groups (P < .05). In the dynamic tests, the OR and WOG showed higher TTF than the OC and PTN X2 (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Under these experimental condition, One Reci exhibited suitable mechanical properties with the highest cyclic fatigue resistance and angle of rotation among the tested instruments.

Abstract
Instruments mechanical strength and flexibility are traditionally tested by running cyclic fatigue, torsional, bending, buckling and microhardness tests. Several cyclic fatigue test models have been used in endodontics, all capable of providing a curved trajectory for the instrument to rotate. The cyclic fatigue testing allowed to identify conditions that may affect the fatigue strength outcomes, such as canal radius and degree of curvature, handpiece static vs dynamic motions, test temperature, kinematics, instrument previously wear and sterilization cycles, or instrument's size and metal alloy features. Due to the international test specifications for both torsional and bending tests, the variations of their models are not as many as for cyclic fatigue. These tests have also identified conditions capable of affecting the outcomes, such as kinematics, instrument's preloading, cross-sectional diameters, or alloy heat treatments. Buckling and microhardness are less common, with the metal alloy being considered to have a major influence on the results. Instruments mechanical testing, having all these individual conditions as independent variables, allowed to understand them and moulded the way the technical procedures are performed clinically. Even though the artificiality and simplicity of these tests will hardly mimic real working situations, and independently of being capable of producing cornerstone knowledge, these tests are also associated with inconsistency, lack of reproducibility and low external validity. Several attempts have been made to increase the generalizability of the outcomes by adding test settings that intend to mimic the clinical condition. Although pertinent, these settings may also add variabilities inherent to their concepts and practical applications in the laboratory environment. Although the actual studies should be seen as laboratory mechanical tests that measure very specific parameters under very particular conditions and that by far do not mimic the clinical condition, the lower validity drawback seems to be possible to be minimized when achieving a comprehensive understanding of the instrument behaviour. A Finite Elements Method and/or a multimethod research approach may lead to superior data collection, analysis, and results' interpretation, which when associated with a reliable confounding factors control and proper study designs may be helpful tools and strategies in order to increase the reliability of the outcomes.

Abstract
Irrigation is considered the primary means of cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system. The purpose of this review was to set the framework for the obstacles that irrigation needs to overcome, to critically appraise currently used irrigants and irrigation methods, to highlight knowledge gaps and methodological limitations in the available studies and to provide directions for future developments. Organization of bacteria in biofilms located in anatomic intricacies of the root canal system and the difficulty to eliminate them is the main challenge for irrigants. Sodium hypochlorite remains the primary irrigant of choice, but it needs to be supplemented by a chelator. Delivery of the irrigants using a syringe and needle and activation by an ultrasonic file are the most popular irrigation methods. There is no evidence that any adjunct irrigation method, including ultrasonic activation, can improve the long‐term outcome of root canal treatment beyond what can be achieved by instrumentation and syringe irrigation. It is necessary to redefine the research priorities in this field and investigate in greater depth the penetration of the irrigants, their effect on the biofilm and the long‐term treatment outcome. New studies must also focus on clinically relevant comparisons, avoid methodological flaws and have sufficiently large sample sizes to reach reliable conclusions. Future multidisciplinary efforts combining the knowledge from basic sciences such as Chemistry, Microbiology and Fluid Dynamics may lead to more effective antimicrobials and improved activation methods to bring them closer to the residual biofilm in the root canal system.

Abstract
This narrative review will focus on the evolution, present and future of engine‐driven root canal preparation. Root canal preparation changed drastically when Walia in 1988 introduced the use of nickel‐titanium (NiTi) alloys in Endodontics. In 2013, five generations of NiTi endodontic instruments had been established based on their metallurgical, mechanical properties and design features. Since then, manufacturers have been introducing further major changes in instrument design and characteristics that have not been translated in new recognized generations of instruments. In general, those changes have demonstrated enhanced instrument properties, but it is not clear yet if all those improvements are directly translated to an improvement in clinical success. This narrative review attempts to address the present status of engine‐driven instruments in terms of both evidence from laboratory‐based studies and clinical data, to identify potential further generations of instruments, and last to anticipate future directions for research and development.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate surface wear, presence of microcracks and surface irregularities of WaveOne (WO) and WaveOne Gold (WOG) instruments before and after multiple uses. Eight Primary instruments of the WO and WOG systems were evaluated, each one was used to prepare six mesial canals of extracted human mandibular molars. The surface of the instruments was evaluated before use (T0), after instrumentation of three (T1) and six (T2) root canals. Surface wear was analyzed using a three-dimensional optical profiler and the presence of microcracks and surface irregularities were evaluated using a tabletop scanning electron microscopy. The Friedman test was used to assess surface wear and Kruskal-Wallis test to evaluate the presence of microcracks and surface irregularities, with a 5% significance level. There was a significant increase in wear in both groups at T2, compared to T0 (p=0.0003). The surface wear after instrumentation of six canals (T2-T0) was statistically greater in the WOG group, than in the WO group (p=0.02), where the presence of microcracks was significantly greater and increased after multiple uses (p<0.05). The presence of surface irregularities in the cutting blade before and after use was statistically greater in the WOG group than WO group (p<0.05). Wear of the cutting blade, microcracks and surface irregularities were observed on the surface topography of all the instruments after multiple uses. These surface changes may affect the cutting efficiency of WOG files and increase the risk of fracture of WO files.

Abstract
Background/Aim: The fracture of engine-driven instruments during root canal treatment has been tried to be eliminated by developing the manufacturing process of the files. The aim of this study was to assess cyclic fatigue resistance (CFR) of the two different rotary filesEdgeSequel™ Sapphire (ES) and Race® Evo (RE)which are produced by two different manufacturing technologies. Material and Methods: While RE is manufactured from heat-treated NiTi alloy with the electropolished surface, ES undergoes a non-disclosed thermal treatment called FireWire heat treatment. The CFRs of ES and RE comprising of similar tip size and taper (15/.04 and 25/.04) were compared on a cyclic fatigue device with an artificial stainless-steel canal (60° curvature, 5 mm radius, 1.5 mm width, and 3.0 mm depth). The continuous water spray with a syringe at 35.5°C was used to decrease the friction and to simulate in vivo conditions. All procedures were performed at recommended speed and torque for both files until fracture occurred. The time to failure (TF) was recorded and the number of cycles to failure (NCF) was calculated. The Weibull calculations (Weibull modulus, R2, predicted cycles, and time for 99 % survival) for NCF and TF were also done. The data were statistically analyzed with the independent two-sample t-test and the paired two-sample t-test. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: Both ES and RE showed a better CFR in 15/.04 tip size than 25/.04 (P < 0.05). The TF of the ES were higher than the RE (P < 0.05). The highest and lowest Weibull modulus values were obtained with RE 15/.04 and RE 25/.04, respectively. Conclusions: Both the tip diameter and alloy modification of the instruments affected the CFR. FireWire heat treatment was associated with longer TF. The bigger the tip diameter, the lower the CFR for both tested products.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to provide a critical overview of the physical properties (surface hardness, cutting efficiency, bending properties, flexibility and cyclic fatigue resistance) of NiTi instruments. Frequently used experimental models regarding these aspects will be presented and discussed with regard to their strengths and weaknesses. For all these aspects, a plethora of experimental models have been described. Based on a critical appraisal and especially taking the appropriate translation of experimental findings to clinical endodontics into account, suggestions for future research based on clearly defined and valid experimental methodologies will be provided. Up to now, very few attempts have been made to assess which particular physical properties of NiTi instruments exert an impact on the clinical outcome of root canal treatment. Departure from merely focusing on physical properties and fracture characteristics towards more biological aspects in terms of treatment outcome is essential.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the torsional fatigue resistance of different rotary files in straight and curved positions at a simulated intracanal temperature. Methods Forty-eight size #25 files from ProTaper Universal (PTU), ProTaper Next (PTN) and ProTaper Gold (PTG) were tested for torsional resistance in both straight and curved (90 degrees) positions (n = 8 each). The experiment was conducted at a simulated intracanal temperature of 35 ± 1 °C. The torque gauge was reset before every use, and uniform torsional stress was applied by rotating the file clockwise at a speed of 40 rpm until fracture. Torque failure values were recorded, and fractured surfaces were tested using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistical analysis of the data was completed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc test (LSD) in order to compare between the tested systems in each file position. Student’s t-test was also performed to compare between the two positions in each rotary system, and significance level was set at 5%. Results In the straight position, torsional resistance of PTN was significantly lower than that of PTU and PTG (p < 0.001), while the PTU and PTG had comparable results (p > 0.05). In the curved position, torsional resistance was found to be comparable among all systems (p > 0.05). Within each system, the curved position resulted in a significantly lower torsional resistance when compared to the straight position (p < 0.001). SEM examination revealed similar torsional failure behavior for all files tested under both positions. Conclusions Our study identified that placing files in a curved position was associated with a significant decrease in torsional resistance of all systems, and this necessitates reconsidering the torque settings proposed by the manufacturers. Whether these effects can be translated into in vivo studies remains to be investigated, and thus future studies are essential to provide confirming evidence.

Abstract
Instrument failure during root canal preparation is still a concern among endodontists. However, it remains unclear whether the use of more martensitic alloys or the cross-sectional design parameters (i.e., core mass) significantly improve fracture resistance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of core mass and alloy on dynamic cyclic fatigue resistance of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments in matching artificial canals at body temperature. Two groups were tested. (A) taper 0.04: F360 (Komet, Lemgo, Germany), Twisted file (Sybron Endo, Glendora, CA, USA) (=TF), JIZAI (Mani, Tochigi, Japan) (=J_04) (all size #25) and the variable tapered TruNatomy (Dentsply, Ballaigues, Switzerland) (size #26) (=TN). (B) size #25; taper 0.06: (Mtwo (VDW, Munich, Germany), JIZAI (Mani) (=J_06), and variable tapered Hyflex EDM OneFile (Coltene Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland) (=HF). Time, number of cycles to fracture (NCF), and number and length of fractured fragments were recorded and statistically analysed using ANOVA Student-Newman-Keuls, Kruskal–Wallis or Chi-square test (significance level = 0.05). (A) TN showed the significantly shortest time until fracture, followed by TF, F360 and J_04 which also differed significantly, while NCF showed the following order: F360 < TN < TF < J_04 (p < 0.05). Only one J_04 but all instruments of the other groups fractured within the test-limit of 10 min. (B) Mtwo was significantly inferior concerning time until fracture and NCF, compared to J_06 and HF (p < 0.05), which did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). While all Mtwo instruments fractured, only four instruments failed in the other groups (p < 0.05). Within the limitations of this study, alloy and cross-sectional design (i.e., core mass) were critical factors regarding instrument failure, but none of these factors could be determined as a main parameter for increased or decreased time, and cycles to fracture. Rather, it seemed to be the interaction of multiple factors (e.g., longitudinal and cross-sectional design, alloy, and rotational speed) that was responsible for differences in the time and cycles to fracture. Nonetheless, all instruments had lifetimes that allow safe clinical use. However, the superiority or inferiority of an instrument with regard to cyclic fatigue based on laboratory results—even when identical trajectories are guaranteed—may be considered questionable, as the characteristics and design parameters of the instruments vary considerably, and the experimental setups lack additional clinical parameters and thus clinical relevance.

Abstract
Introduction: Cyclic fatigue resistance of rotary endodontic instruments has been extensively studied in the last two decades, yet with no standardization. While new low-cost instruments are now manufactured, a standard is lacking to guarantee a minimum quality. This study aimed to validate a new model for CF testing through a fixture proposed for ISO Specification 3630-1 and to establish a minimum quality standard based on testing conditions and material characteristics.Materials and methods: Size 25/0.06 instruments of ProFile Vortex (PF) and Vortex Blue (VB) were run until failure in curved metallic fixtures (5 or 7.5 mm radius) built according to a proposal for an additional test for the ISO 3630-1 standard. High resolution videos were recorded, number of cycles to failure (NCF) registered and apical fragments measured with a digital caliper. Surface strain was determined from test dimensions and fragment lengths. Mean life, β and η parameters were calculated with Weibull analysis. NCF data were compared using student's t-tests and referenced to a minimum required cycles at fracture (Cmin) based on austenite finish temperatures, testing temperature and deformation.Results: VB instruments were statistically more resistant than PF in both 7.5 mm radius curve (p = 0.001) and 5 mm radius curve (p = 0.002) simulated canals. Weibull probability plots showed higher mean life for VB than PV. NCF for both instruments were higher than Cmin.Conclusions: The NCF results in this study support the findings of previous studies where VB and PF were compared. The novel test design appears a suitable addition to ISO 3630-1.

Abstract
This study compared the torsional resistance of heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments under different temperature conditions. Four thermomechanically treated single-use NiTi rotary instruments were selected for this study: OneShape (OS), OneCurve (OC), WaveOne Gold (WOG) and HyFlex EDM (HFE). Each instrument was further subdivided by temperature into 2 subgroups. Maximum torque and the distortion angle until fracture occurred were evaluated. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis was performed to measure the phase transformation temperature. Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA and t-test (p < 0.05). Fractured fragments were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The two-way ANOVA showed no significant differences for different temperature conditions. At both room (RT) and body temperature (BT), OS was predominantly austenite while HFE was martensite. OC and WOG were predominantly martensite at RT and mixed phase at BT. At BT, more than half of WOG was martensite, while half of OC was austenite. SEM examination showed no topographical differences between instruments in different temperature groups. In relation to a limitation of this study, there was no difference in torsional resistance of NiTi rotary instruments between the BT and RT conditions. This implies that clinicians do not need to consider a decrease of torsional resistance of heat-treated NiTi instruments at BT.

Abstract
The main aim is to evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance of blue heat-treated instruments with different kinematics. Twenty-four endodontic instruments of the same brand were used for each of three experimental groups: VB (Vortex Blue 40/0.04), RB (RECIPROC Blue 40/0.06), and XB (X1 Blue 40/0.06). The instruments were randomly distributed and subjected to temperatures of 20°C and 37°C. The fatigue test was performed using a stainless steel device. Data were analysed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's t-test, the F test, and Tukey's and Tamhane tests at significance level P=0.05. The instruments' cyclic fatigue resistance at both temperatures differed significantly for each instrument type (P < 0.001). The RB instruments displayed greater cyclic fatigue resistance at the tested temperatures compared with the VB and XB instruments (P < 0.001). Reciprocating kinematics positively influenced cyclic fatigue resistance. Blue heat-treated instruments showed decreased cyclic fatigue resistance as the temperature increased (P < 0.001).

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of surrounding temperature and angle of file access on cyclic fatigue resistance of F6 SkyTaper (F6ST) and One Curve (OC). 120 new files #25.06 were tested at two insertion angles (0° and 20°) at room (20°C ± 1°C) and body (35°C ± 1°C) temperatures in a 16-mm stainless steel artificial canal (60° curvature and 5-mm radius), using a customised device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was expressed as time to fracture (TtF) in seconds. Data were analysed statistically (P < 0.05). All instruments exhibited lower TtF at 35°C (P < 0.05). An access of 20° did not significantly influence the TtF of tested instruments, independently from the temperature. OC exhibited higher TtF of F6ST at 20°C with a 20° inclination (P < 0.05). Under the present conditions, F6ST and OC showed a significant reduction of cyclic fatigue resistance at body temperature. A file inclined insertion did not affect the cyclic fatigue resistance of tested instruments at both temperatures.

Abstract
Summary
Background/Aim: The aim of the present study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi files running with reciprocal motion and having different characteristics (RPC Blue, WOG, EndoArt Wise Reciproc Gold, EndoArt Wise Reciproc Blue) at the intracanal temperature (35°C) by using NaOCl irrigation solution.
Material and Methods: Totally 60 WaveOne GOLD (Dentsply-Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), Reciproc Blue (VDW, Munich, Germany), EndoArt Wise Reciproc Gold, and EndoArt Wise Blue (Inci Dental Productions Co, Istanbul, Turkey) (n= 15) files were used. Each of the rotary files were tested at the intracanal temperature (35°C) using a dynamic model in a stainless-steel artificial canal with an inner diameter of 1.5 mm, 60° angle of curvature, and 2mm radius of curvature until fracture occurred. The device automatically stopped at the moment of fracture and the number of cycles to the fracture was calculated as per second. The lengths of fractured parts were measured using a digital microcaliper. The One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s post-hoc tests were used for intergroup comparisons.
Results: In 2 mm Radius of curvature, the EndoArt Wise Reciproc Blue group had a significantly higher time to fracture followed by the EndoArt Wise Reciproc Gold, Resiproc Blue, WaveOne Gold. No significant difference was found between EndoArt Wise Reciproc Gold and Resiproc Blue groups (P>0.05). Among the groups, there was no statistically significant difference in the lengths of fractured parts of the instruments (P> 0.05).
Conclusions: EndoArt Wise Reciproc Blue files exhibited significantly higher cyclic fatigue resistance compared with other files tested in a 2-mm radius of curvature and a 60° angle in an artificial canal at the intracanal temperature.

Abstract
This study evaluated the cyclic fatigue resistance for six types of 25# NiTi instruments. A traditional manufacturing instrument, an M wire instrument, a gold treatment instrument, a controlled memory (CM) wire instrument, a CM wire instrument with electrical discharge machining (EDM), and an R-phase heat treatment instrument, were operated in the different curved artificial canals. The fracture time (FT) and number of cycles to fracture (NCF) of the NiTi instruments were higher at 45° angles and double-curvature canals than at 60° angles. Except for the instruments with gold technology and EDM technology, others showed the longest FT and the highest NCF at an 8 mm radius of curvature. Morphological characteristics of cyclic fatigue were exhibited on the cross-section and lateral view of fracture fragments. The use of M-wire, R-phase wire, CM-wire, gold technology, EDM technology, and reciprocating movement were beneficial to enhance the cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi files.

Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to assess the antibacterial effectiveness of two sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) concentrations (2.5% and 5.25%) activated by means of two techniques, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and XP-endo® Finisher (FKG Dentaire SA, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) (XPF) against bacteria growth in intracanal mature biofilm. Our aim was to determine if the effect of heating up NaOCl at body temperature (BT) contributed to an improvement of the efficacy of XPF. Sixty-two single-canal human roots previously instrumented were infected with E. faecalis inoculum at 0.5 McFarland and incubated at 37 °C for two weeks. Twelve specimens were randomly selected as positive control, and the remaining fifty were divided into five experimental groups (n = 10). The first two were irrigated with 2.5 vs. 5.25% NaOCl at room temperature (RT), activated with PUI, and the other three were irrigated with XPF. Of these three, two were irrigated using 2.5 vs. 5.25% NaOCl at RT and one was irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl at BT. Our results showed that NaOCl was effective in biofilm removal for all experimental groups (p > 0.05), especially in the groups irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl at room temperature (RT) activated with PUI and the group treated with 5.25% NaOCl at BT with XPF. These groups were the most successful ones (p < 0.001). NaOCl, activated with XPF, was as effective as PUI in biofilm removal from the apical third of the canal when it was used at higher concentration and heated up. This study indicates that XPF only reached the efficacy of PUI when NaOCl was heated up.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effect of NaOCl (5%) and saline (control) irrigant delivery at different temperatures and durations on pre-load and cyclic-loading tooth-surface-strain (TSS) on anatomically different premolars. METHODOLOGY Single-rooted premolars (n = 36), root-canal-prepared in standard manner, were randomly allocated to six irrigation groups: (A1) NaOCl-21 °C; (A2) NaOCl-60 °C; (A3) saline-21 °C then NaOCl-21 °C; (A4) saline-60 °C then NaOCl-21 °C; (A5) saline-21 °C then NaOCl-60 °C; (A6) saline-60 °C then NaOCl-60 °C. A1-2 received nine 10-min irrigation periods (IP) with NaOCl; A3-6 received nine 10-min IP with saline, followed by 9 IP with NaOCl at different temperature combinations. Premolars (n = 56) with single, fused or double roots prepared by standard protocol, were stratified and randomly allocated to: (B1) saline-21 °C; (B2) saline-80 °C; (B3) NaOCl-21 °C; (B4) NaOCl-80 °C. TSS (μє) was recorded pre-irrigation, post-irrigation and pre-load for each IP and during cyclic loading 2 min after each IP, over 30-274 min, using strain-gauges. Generalised linear mixed models were used for analysis. RESULTS Baseline TSS in double-rooted premolars was significantly (p=0.001) lower than in single/fused-rooted-premolars; and affected by mesial-wall-thickness (p=0.005). There was significant increase in loading-TSS (μє) after NaOCl-21 °C irrigation (p=0.01) but decrease after NaOCl-60 °C irrigation (p=0.001). TSS also increased significantly (p = 0.005) after Saline-80 °C irrigation. Pre-load "strain-shift" was noted only upon first saline delivery but every-time with NaOCl. Strain-shift negatively influenced loading-TSS after saline or NaOCl irrigation (A3-6) but was only significant for saline-21 °C. CONCLUSIONS Tooth anatomy significantly affected its strain characteristics, exhibiting limits within which strain changes occurred. Intra-canal introduction of saline or NaOCl caused non-random strain shifts without loading. Irrigation with NaOCl-21 °C increased loading tooth strain, as did saline-80 °C or NaOCl-80 °C but NaOCl-60 °C decreased it. A "chain-link" model was proposed to explain the findings and tooth biomechanics.

Abstract
Objective
The removal of residual pulpal debris (RPD) from the root canal walls, especially in necrotic teeth is important for successful endodontic outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the RPD removal efficacy of handpiece mounted continuous irrigation with simultaneous root canal preparation from the apical third of root canals as compared to conventional syringe irrigation (SI).
Materials and Methods
Ninety extracted teeth were randomly divided into three groups: SI; handpiece mounted continuous irrigation (CI); and both syringe and continuous irrigation (CI+SI). After root canal preparation, roots were sectioned at 1 (a), 3 (b) and 5 (c) mm from apex and prepared for Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. Sections were microscopically examined for presence of RPD.
Statistical Analysis
Intergroup difference in average percentage of RPD at different root levels was calculated by using analysis of variance test (ANOVA). Tuckey test was used for pairwise comparison.
Results
ANOVA showed significant difference between all three groups (
p
< 0.05). SI group showed a significantly higher percentage of RPD as compared with CI and CI+ SI groups at all root levels (
p
< 0.01). At root level a, CI showed a significantly higher percentage of RPD as compared with CI+SI (
p
< 0.01).
Conclusion
Handpiece mounted CI during rotary instrumentation showed a significant reduction in RPD as compared with conventional syringe irrigation. This technique was found to be an effective method for an enhanced root canal debridement.

Abstract
AIM To assess the free available chlorine concentration (FAC), organic tissue dissolution and smear layer removal capacity of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) alone and when mixtured with etidronate (HEDP) and tetrasodium EDTA (Na4 EDTA), and heated to different temperatures. METHODOLOGY Mixtures at 1 : 1 ratio of 5% NaOCl with distilled water (considered NaOCl alone), 18% HEDP or 10% Na4 EDTA were heated to 25 °C, 37 °C, 48 °C and 60 °C. The FAC in the mixtures was assessed at 5, 10, 20, 30, 60 and 120 min. Samples of bovine muscle tissue (n = 10) were prepared with similar size and weighed before and after 5, 10 and 15 min of immersion in the mixtures heated to the different temperatures to verify organic matter dissolution. The intergroup results were compared statistically using one-way analysis of variance (anova) and intragroup by two-way analysis of variance (anova), both followed by Tukey's multiple-comparison test (α < 0.01). Bovine dentine blocks (n = 10) were analysed by scanning electron microscopy before and after immersion in the mixtures, and the time taken to remove the smear layer from the surfaces of the samples was determined. The Friedman test was used to compare the scores of the same group (α < 0.01), and the Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's post hoc was used to compare the different groups (α < 0.01). Saline solution was used as a control in the experiments of tissue dissolution and smear layer removal, RESULTS: Heating NaOCl alone did not affect its FAC. The higher the temperature of the mixtures with the chelators, the lower the FAC. Organic tissue dissolution was improved by increases in temperature of NaOCl alone and its mixture with HEDP (P < 0.01); however, the mixture with Na4 EDTA had no improvement (P > 0.01). Smear layer removal by NaOCl alone was enhanced by heating resulting in lower scores in some samples and became more rapid in the mixtures with the chelators. The saline solution did not promote tissue dissolution nor smear layer removal (P > 0.01). CONCLUSION In this laboratory study, heating NaOCl alone or when mixed with HEDP improved its capacity to dissolve organic matter and remove the smear layer. However, the mixture with HEDP required frequent refreshment to retain these effects when heated. Due to the acceleration in the reaction between the irrigants, very rapid reductions in the free available chlorine in the mixtures with Na4 EDTA heated to the different temperatures occurred.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This laboratory-based study aimed to investigate the quantitative amount of apically extruded debris from severely curved root canals and the preparation time for the novel rotary system TruNatomy (TN; Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, NC) compared with Reciproc Blue (RCB; VDW Dental, Munich, Germany), HyFlex (HyFlex Controlled Memory [HCM; Coltene/Whaledent, Altstatten, Switzerland] and HyFlex EDM [HEDM, Coltene/Whaledent]), and ProTaper Next (PTN; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) rotary systems. METHODS One hundred mandibular molar human teeth with severe curvature of the mesiobuccal canal (25°-45°) were included in the present study. The specimens were randomly distributed into 5 balanced groups (n = 20): TN, RCB, HCM, PTN, and HEDM. The amount of extruded debris for each group during instrumentation at body temperature was collected in an Eppendorf tube. After desiccation, the mean debris weights for each group were calculated. The total preparation time for each group was also recorded. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test at a significance level of P < .05. RESULTS The HCM and HEDM groups extruded a significantly higher amount of debris than the other tested groups (P < .001). TN extruded the least amount of debris, but it was not significantly different compared with the RCB and PTN groups (P > .05). In terms of preparation time, the TN group did not show any significant difference compared with the other groups. CONCLUSIONS All instrumentation systems extruded debris. TN was among the groups that produced the lowest amount of apically extruded debris that is clinically acceptable. The amount of apically extruded debris using the TN system was equal to 2 popular systems and statistically significantly less than 2 other popular systems studied.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare cyclic fatigue (CF) resistance of reciprocating and rotary glide path instruments in the presence of irrigation solutions at body temperature. CF resistance of 100 instruments (50 ProGlider and 50 WaveOne Gold Glider) was tested in sodium hypochlorite solutions alone (NaOCl) or in combination with etidronate (NaOCl/HEBP). The CF platform with a simulated canal (curvature = 60°/radius = 3 mm) was submerged in a temperature-controlled bath with the solutions kept at 37 ± 1°C controlled by a precision mercury glass thermometer. Instruments were actioned following manufacturer guidelines, and time to failure was recorded and compared among groups with Weibull analysis. Reciprocating glide path preparation instruments were more resistant to CF than rotary instruments in both irrigation solutions. The irrigation solution did not affect the mean life of ProGlider, but reciprocating instruments lasted significantly longer used in presence of NaOCl compared to NaOCl/HEBP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of final irrigation of root canals with NaOCl solution at different temperatures on postoperative pain level and antimicrobial activity. METHODOLOGY 45 patients were randomly divided into three groups using a web program according to the irrigation selected: NaOCl 2ºC, NaOCl 25ºC and NaOCl 45ºC. First root canal samples were collected before treatment (S1). After chemo-mechanical preparation, final irrigation was performed with the selected irrigant (NaOCl 2ºC, NaOCl 25ºC and NaOCl 45ºC) and second samples were collected (S2). Samples were subjected to quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to evaluate the levels of total bacteria. The root canal treatments were completed and the participants were given instructions to record postoperative pain levels at 24, 48 and 72 hours, 5 days and 1 week after treatment using a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS The reduction in the number of total bacterial cell equivalents from S1 to S2 was statistically significant in all groups (p<0.001). The NaOCl 2˚C group reported significantly less postoperative pain than the NaOCl 45˚C group (p<0.05). Postoperative analgesic intake was significantly higher in the NaOCl 45˚C group than in the NaOCl 2˚C group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION We conclude that final irrigation with NaOCl at different temperatures results in similar antibacterial effectiveness. Final irrigation with cold NaOCl (2˚C) is better than NaOCl 45˚C when comparing postoperative pain levels.

Abstract
Peracetic acid (PAA) is widely used as a sterilizing/disinfecting agent, and, in endodontics, it has been introduced as a promising irrigant in root canal treatment. It has been used at different concentrations to achieve various functions. However, endodontic instruments in contact with PAA of a certain concentration may affect their fatigue resistance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of PAA on the cyclic fatigue resistance of three commercial heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files. Three types of heat-treated NiTi rotary files were selected: One Curve (OC), ProTaper Gold (PTG), and Wave One Gold (WOG). Each type was divided into three subgroups (n = 6 for each file type): (1) untreated instruments; (2) files immersed in 0.002% PAA; and (3) files immersed in 0.35% PAA. The performance of each file type was tested in a simulated canal. The number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was determined to assess cyclic fatigue resistance of the files. Independent sample t-test was applied to compare each treated file within a subgroup with its respective control group, and one-way ANOVA was used for comparison among the main groups. All types of tested files revealed a significant decline in the cyclic fatigue resistance after exposure to 0.002% PAA except the PTG (P=0.209). After exposure of the files to a higher concentration (0.35% PAA), a dramatic reduction was demonstrated by all the groups. Before and after exposure of the files to PAA, PTG displayed the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, followed by the WOG, while the OC showed the lowest resistance. Exposure of heated-treated NiTi files to PAA in a relatively high or low concentration adversely affects the cyclic fatigue resistance. The PTG files demonstrated the best performance among the tested types and can be disinfected with 0.002% PAA for clinical purpose.

Abstract
Background. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of continuous irrigation with saline solution at room temperature or +4°C on the cyclic fatigue resistance of K3XF files.
Methods. Forty-eight new K3XF files (#30, .04 taper) were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (no irrigation), continuous irrigation with saline solution at room temperature, and continuous irrigation with saline solution at +4°C. The instruments were tested in an artificial, stainless steel root canal with a double curvature at body temperature (37±1°C). Time to fracture was converted to the number of cycles to fracture (NCF). The lengths of the fractured fragments were recorded. Kruskal–Wallis H test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze data.
Results. K3XF files’ cyclic fatigue resistance was significantly higher in the continuous irrigation groups than in the control group. Continuous irrigation with saline solution at +4°C resulted in higher cyclic fatigue resistance than continuous irrigation with saline solution at room temperature. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the fractured fragments’ length.
Conclusion. Within this study’s limitations, continuous irrigation with saline solution increased the NCF of NiTi instruments; decreasing the saline solution’s temperature increased this effect.

Abstract
Antibacterial activity and tissue dilution of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) are improved by moderately heating the irrigant. Temperature can be risen by preheating or intracanal activation. To assess intracanal temperature development of NaOCl during irrigation activation and syringe activation (SI) in a closed system at 37°C, Type-K thermocouples were inserted close to the root canal of one human single-rooted maxillary canine at the apex and 5 and 10 mm from the apical foramen via drilled holes. The root was positioned in a plastic vial filled with alginate simulating surrounding biological structures. Experiments were performed in a closed environment at 37°C (n = 14): EA: EndoActivator (Dentsply Sirona), EDDY: EDDY (VDW), PUI: passive ultrasonic irrigation, PIPS: Photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (Fotona), S60: SI of 60°C-NaOCl, S45: SI of 45°C-NaOCl, and S20: SI of 20°C-NaOCl. S45, PUI and EDDY lead to minor intracanal temperature increases. EA and PIPS did not influence the intracanal temperature. SI with 60°C-NaOCl resulted in higher intracanal temperatures than activation systems. Temperature dissipation into simulated tissues buffered intracanal temperature changes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study evaluated the effects of using heated distilled water (HDW), with or without continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI), on smear layer removal and deterioration of root dentine microstructure. MATERIALS AND METHODS After chemomechanical preparation, 60 human teeth were longitudinally cleaved into two halves for smear layer quantification at the cervical-third, middle-third and apical root-third of the canal space. After reassembly, the root canals were irrigated with 17 % EDTA, followed by one of the six final irrigation protocols (n = 10) - G1: conventional irrigation (CI)+NaOCl at 25 °C; G2: NaOCl at 25 °C + CUI; G3: CI with DW at 25 °C; G4: DW at 25 °C + CUI; G5: CI + HDW at 65 °C; G6: HDW at 65 °C + CUI. Tooth-halves were processed and examined by scanning electron microscopy. The percentage of opened dentinal tubules in the irrigated areas of the canal space was expressed as a percentage of the total surface area. Dentine erosion was classified by numeric scores. Smear layer removal was analysed with ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls tests; dentine erosion was analysed with Cohran-Mantel-Haenstel statistic (α = 0.05). RESULTS The cervical-third had a higher percentage of open dentinal tubules for all groups (p < 0.05). In G2, the middle-third had a lower percentage of open tubules, which was significantly different from the other groups (p < 0.05). Groups that utilised NaOCl as the final irrigant had more extensive erosion when CUI was used. CONCLUSION Heated distilled water, with or without CUI, was as efficient as 1 % NaOCl in the final cleaning of the instrumented canal space. The use of HDW produces less extensive dentine erosion. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Heated distilled water removes smear layers with less deleterious effects on dentine microstructure and may be considered a final irrigant after mechanical preparation and EDTA chelation.

Abstract
Background. This study aimed to compare the VDW.ROTATE instruments with the Reciproc Blue instruments in different kinematics in terms of the cyclic fatigue resistance.
Methods. Sixty instruments, 40 VDW.ROTATE and 20 Reciproc Blue instruments, were divided into three groups (n=20): VDW.ROTATE was used in both continuous rotation and reciprocation, and Reciproc Blue was used in reciprocation only. The cyclic fatigue resistance test was carried out in an artificial canal (60°, r=3 mm) at an intracanal temperature of 35±2°C until fracture, and the time to fracture was recorded in seconds. The data were analyzed statistically using Kruskal–Wallis and Tamhane’s T2 tests (P<0.05).
Results. DAll the reciprocating motion groups resulted in a longer mean duration to failure than the continuous rotation motion group (P<0.05).
Conclusion. It was observed that the Reciproc Blue instruments had higher cyclic fatigue resistance than VDW.ROTATE instruments (P<0.05). Recent studies have shown that reciprocal movement increases cyclic fatigue resistance compared to rotational movement. The VDW.ROTATE instrument, which has a similar size, design, and alloy as the Reciproc Blue instrument, can also be used by clinicians in reciprocating motion with endo motors capable of reciprocating in different directions. However, even if the cyclic fatigue resistance increases by using VDW.ROTATE instruments in reciprocation, the cyclic fatigue resistance is lower than Reciproc Blue instruments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 5 different curvature locations on the fatigue resistance of thermomechanically treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) files and superelastic NiTi files at body temperature and to document the corresponding phase transformations. METHODS EndoSequence (ES; Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), EndoSequence CM (ESCM, Brasseler USA), K3 (SybronEndo, Orange, CA), K3XF (SybronEndo), and Vortex Blue (VB; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK) NiTi files (size 25/.04) were subjected to fatigue tests inside customized artificial canals containing a curvature of 60° and a 3-mm radius. There were 5 different canals based on the location of initial curvature; these included groups in which the distance between the canal orifice and the location of the curvature (DOC) was 5, 6, 8, 10, and 11 mm. The model canal was immersed in water at 37°C ± 1°C. The number of cycles to failure (Nf) was recorded, and the fracture surface of the fragments was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Two unused files of each brand were examined by differential scanning calorimetry. RESULTS The Nf was highest in the 10-mm and 11-mm DOC groups and lowest with the 5-mm and 6-mm DOC groups (P < .05). ESCM files had the highest fatigue resistance followed by the VB, K3XF, K3, and ES files (P < .05). ESCM files had the highest Nf (P < .05), and ES and K3 files had the lowest Nf (P < .05) depending on the curvature location. Two endothermic peaks were observed on the heating curve of the heat-treated files (ESCM, K3XF, and VB). CONCLUSIONS The location of the canal curvature had a significant effect on the fatigue resistance of both heat-treated and superelastic NiTi files. The fatigue life of files in the coronal curve was quite short.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the effect of the location of the canal curvature on the fatigue resistance of WaveOne (WO), WaveOne Gold (WOG), Reciproc (Rec), and Reciproc Blue (RecB) files, and to examine the phase transformation behaviors of the reciprocating file systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS The instruments were subjected to fatigue testing in five artificial canals with a curvature of 60° angle and a 3-mm radius. The location of the curvature was unique for each canal. Each file was inserted 16 mm into the canal and operated until fracture occurred. The time to fracture was recorded and the length of the fragment was measured. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to characterize the thermal behavior of the files. The number of cycles to failure was analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the mean fragment lengths between groups. RESULTS The instruments had significantly lower fatigue resistance in canals with curvatures in the middle and coronal canals compared with those with apical curvatures (p < 0.05). At all tested curvature locations, RecB had superior fatigue resistance compared with WO and Rec (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences between WOG and Rec in canals with curvatures in the middle and coronal canals. The DSC thermograms for RecB exhibit a single exothermic peak during cooling but double endothermic peaks during heating indicating that a two-step phase transformation from martensite to R-phase to austenite takes place. CONCLUSIONS The reciprocating instruments experience decreased cyclic fatigue resistance when operated in canals with coronal- and middle-third curvatures when compared with curvatures in the apical-third. Instrumenting coronally positioned curvatures with reciprocating files needs to be performed with caution. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The location of the root canal's curvature influences the fracture resistance of rotary files that are used with reciprocating movements. Therefore, caution needs to be exercised when using reciprocating instruments in canals with coronal or middle curvatures.

Abstract
Objectives This systematic review evaluated the influence of autoclave sterilization procedures on the cyclic fatigue resistance of heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments. Materials and Methods A systematic search without restrictions was conducted in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, and Open Grey. The hand search was also performed in the main endodontic journals. The eligible studies were submitted to the methodological assessment and data extraction. Results From 203 abstracts, a total of 10 articles matched the eligible criteria. After reading the full articles, 2 were excluded because of the absence of the heat-treated instruments in the experimental design and 3 due to the lack of a control group using heat-treated instruments without autoclave sterilization. From the 5 included studies, 1 presented a low risk of bias, 3 presented moderate and 1 high risk. It was observed heterogeneous findings in the included studies, with autoclave sterilization cycles increasing, decreasing or not affecting the cyclic fatigue life of heat-treated NiTi instruments. However, the retrieved studies evaluating the cyclic fatigue resistance of endodontic instruments presented different protocols and assessing outcomes, this variability makes the findings less comparable within and also between groups and preclude the establishment of an unbiased scientific evidence base. Conclusions Considering the little scientific evidence and considerable risk of bias, it is still possible to conclude that autoclave sterilization procedures appear to influence the cyclic fatigue resistance of heat-treated NiTi instruments.

Abstract
This study assessed the porcine palatal mucosa dissolution, from artificial grooves, by a final rinse of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solely or mixed with Keratobacter ((KB); or agitation) passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) or sonic activation (SA). Soft-tissue samples (n = 123) were weighed and placed inside root canal grooves in central maxillary incisors. The specimens were randomly divided into six test groups (n = 20): NaOCl 3% with or without KB and the irrigation dynamics: positive pressure (PP), SA or PUI. An EDTA intermediate rinse was included. Soft-tissue weights were measured subsequently. The NaOCl + KB_PUI group showed the highest mean weight reduction, whilst the NaOCl_PP group recorded the lowest. NaOCl + KB subgroups were associated with hastened reduction compared with NaOCl subgroups. NaOCl_PP presented with significantly lower weight reduction when compared with the remaining experimental groups. The addition of KB to NaOCl or its agitation enhances tissue dissolution ex vivo. The agitation of KB-containing mixtures offers no further benefits.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance of Dia-X, WaveOne Gold and One Curve files in a water bath at intracanal temperature (35°C). Thirty-nine instruments Dia-X, WaveOne Gold, and One Curve systems (n = 13) were tested in an artificial canal with a curvature angle of 60° and a radius of 3 mm. A water bath setup at a temperature of 35°C was used to simulate the intracanal temperature and time to fracture (TTF) as seconds was recorded. The mean data were analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA, and post hoc Tukey test (p = .05). The fractured surface of the instruments was examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical composition of the instruments were investigated with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Statistically significant differences were detected in TTF values of all the systems as follows: One Curve > WaveOne Gold > Dia-X (p < .05). One Curve instruments demonstrated the highest TTF values in all the tested instruments. The EDS microanalysis revealed similar NiTi composition of on the surface of One Curve, WaveOne Gold, and Dia-X instruments. The novel manufacturing process, including C-wire heat treatment and the variable cross-section of the One Curve files, could be the main factors affecting the fatigue life of the instruments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shaping abilities of the XPS (XP-endo Shaper) and PTN (ProTaper Next) systems by using cone-beam computed tomography on apical, middle, and coronal thirds of the pre-created large canals with different apical sizes. METHODS Seventy-two teeth with single canal were divided into 3 groups, and then large root canals were created with apical diameter #30 (Group 1), #35 (Group 2), or #40 (Group 3) by using hand files. Each group was again divided into 2 experimental groups, and root canals were instrumented with either XPS or PTN. Canals were scanned before and after instrumentation by using cone-beam computed tomography scanner to evaluate mesiodistal transportation, buccolingual transportation, centering ratio, percent increased prepared area (PA) (mm2), and percent increased prepared outline (PO) (mm) at 2, 5, and 8 mm from the apex. Data were statistically analyzed, and the significance level was set at P < .05. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences in PA, PO, and centering ratio values between instruments in size 30 and size 35. The mean increases in PA and PO (P < .021) were statistically higher with XPS in size 40. PTN had statistically higher buccolingual transportation in size 30 and size 35. XPS had lower mesiodistal transportation values in all 3 apical sizes. CONCLUSIONS PTN system is able to remove the dentin even in cases of increased apical diameter. However, XPS has less canal transportation and better centering ability compared with PTN.

Abstract
Background. This study examined the effects of changes in temperature and environmental conditions on the cyclic fatigue resistance of Reciproc Blue, HyFlex EDM, WaveOne Gold, and Twisted File Adaptive. Methods. Forty-five Reciproc Blue (25/.08), 45 HyFlex EDM (25/.08), 45 WaveOne Gold (25/.07), and 45 Twisted File Adaptive (25/.08) files were tested for cyclic fatigue at room temperature (20°C) in air and water and at body temperature (35°C) in water. All the instruments were rotated in artificial canals made of stainless steel with an inner diameter of 1.5 mm, 60° angle of curvature and a radius of curvature of 5 mm until fracture occurred; the time to fracture was recorded in seconds, using a digital chronometer. Mann-Whitney U test was used for the statistical analysis of data, with SPSS 21.0. Results. Cyclic fatigue resistance was significantly higher in all the groups in water at an ambient temperature of 20°C compared with air and water at temperatures of 20°C and 35°C, respectively (P<0.05). The intragroup analysis revealed that HyFlex EDM had the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, followed by Reciproc Blue, WaveOne Gold, and Twisted File Adaptive in both air and water at 20°C (P<0.05). HyFlex EDM exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance in water at 35°C, whereas there was no significant difference between the other groups (P>0.05). Conclusion. Within the limitations of the present study, an increase in the ambient temperature significantly decreased the cyclic fatigue resistance of the tested NiTi files.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate and compare the fatigue resistance of ProTaper Gold (PTG) and ProTaper Universal (PTU) in artificial single and double curvature canals in 5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at body temperature (37 °C). PTG and PTU files (size F1) were subjected to fatigue tests in two different artificial ceramic canals. The single curvature model had a 60° curvature angle with a 5 mm radius. The double curvature model had a 60° curvature angle with a 5 mm radius and a second 30° curvature with a 2 mm radius. A file segment was introduced into the artificial canal and immersed in water or 5% NaOCl at 37 °C. The total number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was recorded. Data were analyzed using t-test and linear regression analysis. The NCF of all files was significantly influenced by the type of NiTi metal alloy (P < .01), canal curvatures (P < .01), and the environmental conditions (P < .05). PTG had higher fatigue resistance than PTU files in both single and double curvature canals (P < .05). The NCF of PTU files in 5% NaOCl was shorter than that in water (P < .05). The mean length of broken PTG was significantly shorter than those of PTU files in both single and double curvature canals (P < .01). The fatigue performance of PTG is better than that of PTU in both single and double curvature. Environmental conditions may affect the fatigue behavior of PTU files with single curvature.
