Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this literature review was to summarise the clinical important findings on the endodontic treatment outcome in older patients (≥60 years old) with pulpal/periapical disease considering local and systemic factors from a body of knowledge that is heterogeneous in methods or disciplines. BACKGROUND Due to the increasing number of older patients in the endodontic practice, and the current trend for tooth preservation, the need for clinicians to have a better understanding of age-related implications that may influence the required endodontic treatment in older adults to retain their natural dentition is indispensable. METHODS PubMed/Medline and Embase was searched by a medical librarian using specific terms based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. The reference list was hand-seached for additional relevant publications between 2005-2020. A combination of these terms was performed uing Boolean operators and MeSH terms. RESULTS Of the 1577 publications identified manually and electronically, 25 were included to be fully reviewed by the examiners. The data was derived from three systematic reviews, one systematic and meta-analysis, three case series, four prospective and 14 retrospective cohorts. Overall, there was heterogeneity in reporting as well as limitations in most studies. CONCLUSIONS The outcome of endodontic treatment (ET) either nonsurgical or surgical or combination of these is not affected by older age. ET can be the treatment of choice in older patients wiht pulpal/periapical disease. There is no evidence that older age per se affects the outcome of any type of endodontic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the oxidative stress cycle consisting of reactive oxygen molecules (ROS), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in caries-related pulp inflammation. METHODOLOGY Fifty-four pulp tissue samples were collected from healthy donors with the diagnosis of reversible pulpitis, symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, and healthy pulp. Twelve pulp samples from each group were homogenized and total protein, ROS, GSH, and GST were measured by spectrophotometer. The remaining 6 samples from each group were prepared for paraffin block and used for the histopathologic and immunohistochemical evaluation of oxidative stress parameters and TUNEL labeling. Data were analyzed statistically. RESULTS The results revealed that total protein levels significantly decreased; however, ROS levels increased in both reversible and irreversible pulpitis compared to the healthy pulp (p < 0.01). Also, as inflammation increases, GST enzyme levels decrease while GSH levels increase significantly (p < 0.05). It was found that the number of TUNEL (+) cells was increased in irreversible pulpitis samples compared to healthy and reversible pulpitis groups (p < 0.05). GSTP1 and GSH immunoreactivity were also observed in irreversible pulpitis samples. CONCLUSIONS It has been revealed that caries-related inflammation alters the oxidative stress cycle in dental pulp tissue. The increase in GSH levels in the inflamed dental pulp due to the increase in ROS levels may improve the defensive ability of the dental pulp. CLINICAL RELEVANCE There is a relationship between oxidative stress and inflammation. Control of excessive oxidative stress in pulpitis can stimulate reparative and regenerative processes. The present findings may provide an overview of the management of oxidative stress in cases with pulpitis during regenerative treatments.

Abstract
The aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of partial pulpotomies in deep caries processes or post-eruptive defects in young, vital permanent teeth. Four electronic databases, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar, were searched, followed by a manual search in the reference lists. Randomized controlled trials evaluating partial pulpotomy with a follow-up period of ≥12 months were included. A meta-analysis using a random effects model was performed. A total of 3127 articles were retrieved, and after duplicate removal, 2642 were screened by title and abstract; 1 additional article was found during the manual search, and 79 were identified. Finally, six papers were included in the review. Regardless of the partial pulpotomy modalities or material used, there were no significant differences between clinical and radiographic success rates (cumulative success rate 91.8-92.3%). Five studies were included in the meta-analysis that did not indicate any statistically significant differences in success rates when mineral trioxide aggregate was compared to other materials (95% confidence interval: 0.239 to 1.016; p = 0.055). The present research systematically evaluates the evidence and summarizes the available data on partial pulpotomy in young permanent teeth. Given its high clinical and radiographic success rate, partial pulpotomy should be considered when vital pulpal therapy needs to be performed in highly damaged young permanent teeth, as this procedure provides a biological benefit and allows more invasive endodontic treatments to be postponed.

Abstract
Phosphorylation of beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ) at the Ser8 residue affects its neurotoxicity, metal-dependent oligomerisation, amyloidogenicity, and other pathogenic properties. Phosphorylated Aβ (pS8-Aβ) was detected in vivo in AD model mice and in the brains of patients with AD. However, the pS8-Aβ production and the regulation of its levels have not been previously studied in detail. In this paper, immunochemical methods together with radioactive labelling were used to study the Aβ phosphorylation by intracellular and surface protein kinases of HEK293 cells and brain endothelial cells (bEnd.3). It was found that HEK293 robustly phosphorylated Aβ, likely with contribution from casein kinase 2 (CK2), whereas in bEnd.3, the activity of Aβ phosphorylation was relatively low. Further, the study showed that both HEK293 and bEnd.3 could dephosphorylate pS8-Aβ, mainly due to the activity of protein phosphatases PP1 and PP2A. The Aβ dephosphorylation efficiency in bEnd.3 was three times higher than in HEK293, which correlated with the reduced abundance of pS8-Aβ in vascular amyloid deposits of patients with AD compared to senile plaques. These data suggest an important role of CK2, PP1, and PP2A as regulators of Aβ phosphorylation, and point to the involvement of the blood-brain barrier in the control of Aβ modification levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this study, it was aimed to examine the catalase activity in clinically healthy and caries-related inflamed symptomatic human dental pulps of young and old individuals. DESIGN Sixty pulp samples from young and old healthy donors, were collected depending on pulpal status. 48 samples were used for spectrophotometric analysis and 12 samples for immunohistochemistry. Healthy pulps were maintained from non-carries, extracted third molars. Reversible and irreversible pulpitis samples were obtained by pulp extirpation during endodontic treatment. Following homogenization catalase enzyme activity was determined by spectrophotometry. Additionally, two pulp tissue samples from each group were fixed and evaluated for catalase immunoreactivity. RESULTS Catalase enzyme activity in old healthy pulp samples were significantly higher than healthy young samples (p ≤ 0.05). Reversible and irreversible pulpitis samples indicated significantly decreased activity compared to healthy samples in elderly group (p ≤ 0.05). Young reversible pulpitis samples showed significantly increased catalase activity when compared to irreversible pulpitis and the reversible pulpitis samples in elderly group (p ≤ 0.05). Immunohistochemical evaluation indicated that there was intense catalase immunoreactivity in young patients with reversible pulpitis compared with reversible pulpitis in elderly group. However, weak immunoreactivity was observed in young irreversible pulpitis and elderly reversible pulpitis samples. CONCLUSIONS The pulp tissues presented different levels of catalase activities against pulpitis and aging.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was performed to investigate the relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and pulpal calcifications in young women. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 100 female participants between 20 and 31 years of age who were referred to our radiology clinic for a dental check-up, including 59 SB and 41 non-SB patients, were sampled for the analysis. SB was diagnosed based on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine criteria. All teeth were evaluated on digital panoramic radiographs to detect pulpal calcifications, except third molars, teeth with root canal treatment, and teeth with root resorption. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors for pulpal calcifications. The Spearman correlation coefficient was applied and the Pearson chi-square test was used for categorical variables. To test intra-examiner reproducibility, Cohen kappa analysis was applied. P values <.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS A total of 2800 teeth were evaluated (1652 teeth from SB patients and 1148 from non-SB patients), and 61% of patients had at least 1 dental pulpal calcification. No statistically significant relationship was found between SB and pulpal calcifications (P>0.05). In SB patients, the total number of pulpal calcifications was 129, while in non-SB patients, it was 84. Binary logistic analysis showed that SB was not a risk factor for the presence of pulpal calcifications (odds ratio, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.52-2.69, P>.05). CONCLUSION No relationship was found between SB and pulpal calcifications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of pulp stones by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to correlate their prevalence with patient's gender, location of tooth (right or left of maxillary or mandibular arch), group of teeth, and restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS CBCT images of 382 patients randomly selected from the database of the University Oral Radiology Department were retrospectively examined. A total of 2833 tooth images obtained using the i-CAT 3D Imaging System were evaluated. Image analysis was performed with the i-CAT software, and all teeth were evaluated in sagittal, axial, and coronal views. All the measurements were subjected to chi square test, odds ratio, and Fisher's exact tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS The prevalence of pulp stones was similar between patient's genders and tooth locations. Pulp stones were detected in 31.9% of patients and 9.5% of teeth. Maxillary and mandibular molars were the groups of teeth with the highest frequency of pulp stones. The presence of restorations increased the chance of occurrence of pulp stones by 2.1 times in all teeth examined (p < 0.0001) and by 4.7 times in maxillary teeth (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Pulp stones had a high prevalence with molar teeth showing the highest prevalence. The presence of restorations increased the chance of occurrence of these calcifications, specifically in maxillary teeth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE CBCT provides accurate anatomical details in three dimensions, offering the possibility to view an individual tooth in axial, sagittal, and coronal views. This study performed an investigation of the occurrence of pulp stones by CBCT.
