Abstract
This systematic review aimed to investigate the scientific literature on volumetric studies concerning the diagnosis and treatment of apical periodontitis using CBCT. A systematic review protocol was written following the preferred reporting items for the systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklist. Four electronic databases were searched for relevant publications in English, which were published up to 21 January 2023. The inclusion criteria and corresponding search keys were applied. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistic Assessment and Review Instrument. The search strategy identified 202 studies, with 123 studies excluded during the title and abstract screening and 47 studies left for full text screening. A total of 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. The lesion volume was measured and classified according to different indices which compared the effectiveness of their diagnostics. Moreover, the volume of AP lesions increased with the thickness of the maxillary sinus mucosa in primary and secondary infections and decreased due to endodontic treatment. Volumetric measurements using CBCT are useful in the correct definition of periapical tissue pathosis using a CBCT periapical volume index and assessment of the dynamics of the treatment of apical lesions.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare volume measurements obtained using 2 image software packages on Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images acquired from 1 multidetector computed tomography and 5 cone-beam computed tomography devices, using different protocols for physical volume measurements. Materials and Methods Four pieces of bovine leg were prepared. Marrow was removed from 3 pieces, leaving cortical bone exposed. The resulting space of 1 piece was filled with water, another was filled with propylene glycol, and the third was left unfilled. The marrow in the fourth sample was left fully intact. Volume measurements were obtained after importing DICOM images into the Dolphin Imaging 11.95 and ITK-SNAP software programs. Data were analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance with a generalized linear model to determine the effects of voxel size, software, and content on percentage mean volume differences between tomographic protocols. A significance level of 0.05 was used. Results The intraclass correlation coefficients for intraobserver and interobserver reliability were, respectively, 0.915 and 0.764 for the Dolphin software and 0.894 and 0.766 for the ITK-SNAP software. Three sources of statistically significant variation were identified: the interaction between software and content (P=0.001), the main effect of content (P=0.014), and the main effect of software (P=0.001). Voxel size was not associated with statistically significant differences in volume measurements. Conclusion Both content and software influenced the accuracy of volume measurements, especially when the content had gray values similar to those of the adjacent tissues.

Abstract
Statement of the Problem: Intraosseous lesions of jaws can be imaged by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and ultrasonography (USG). The knowledge of imaging features of these two methods about
intraosseous jaw lesions is important for dental radiology. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate artificial mandible intraosseous lesions by using CBCT and USG. Materials and Method: In this in vitro study, intraosseous lesions containing water, milk, olive oil, and liver were evaluated in 60 artificial mandibles by using CBCT and USG.
Lesion sizes were compared between CBCT and USG. Lesion sizes were measured on the anterior-posterior, bucco-lingual, and superior-inferior sides. Hounsfield unit (HU)
values of the lesions in CBCT images were compared between different materials. Echogenicity of the lesions were evaluated in USG images. One sample t and one-way Anova tests
were used for the statistical analysis of the study (p< 0.05). Results: In all size measurements of the lesions, mean CBCT values were statistically higher when compared with USG. In CBCT images, statistically difference was found between the
HU values of lesions containing olive oil and other lesion contents. In USG images, echogenicity of water, milk and olive oil was found to be anechoic and the
echogenicity of liver was found to be hypoechoic. Conclusion: CBCT was found to be more accurate than USG in measurement of the size of mandibular intraosseous lesions. According to the results of our study, it was thought
that only oil content could be differentiated by using CBCT HU values. It was found that lesions with liquid and non-liquid contents could be differentiated with
their echogenicity difference in USG images.

Abstract
Sinus pathologies of odontogenic origin (SPO) are common in the clinical consultation; however, the dentist has some complications to detect them because their discovery is usually incidental and through imaging studies that, in most cases, are of low quality. The objective of this review is to describe the pertinent imaging resources that allow the detection of the most frequent SPO and, at the same time, carry out an updated review of the scientific literature in order to recognize the imaging of both the maxillary sinus and the dental organs. The scientific literature focused on this topic, published between 2014 and 2020, was consulted. The review showed two important results: the first is that Cone Beam Tomography (CBCT) represents the imaging modality with the best performance for the detection of SPO by what can be considered the gold standard for this purpose. The second is that the most frequent SPO is sinus mucositis, which is related to odontogenic conditions such as periapical lesions and periodontal affectations. Although Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is the most appropriate tool to detect SPO compared to images obtained by 2D devices, there are also other alternatives such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography, which seem to have a promising future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This retrospective study aimed to assess the radiologic characteristics of the possible associations between mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinuses (MSs) and periodontal and anatomic conditions of healthy and diseased maxillary teeth. METHODS The periapical health of the maxillary molars in cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images from 50 patients (mean age = 40.60±14.59 years) was evaluated using the CBCT-periapical index. Anatomic associations between maxillary molars and the inferior wall of the MSs and periodontal bone loss and its relation to MS pathology were assessed. The possible effects of these conditions on mucosal thickening of MSs were analyzed. Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, chi-square, and logistic regression (for relative risk) tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS CBCT-periapical index 4 was the most frequently encountered apical periodontitis (AP) lesion. The risk for pathologic changes in the MSs was significantly higher in the presence of AP (P < .001). This risk was 62.364 times greater than that in areas of MSs adjacent to healthy teeth of the same patient (95% confidence interval, 7.968-488.14). Thicker MS mucosae were detected when the molar roots with AP were closer to the MSs (P < .004). No statistically significant difference was found between periodontal status and MS pathology. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study showed that MSs were affected by the endodontic health of adjacent molar teeth. Dental and medical practitioners should take into consideration the possible odontogenic causes while examining pathologic changes in the MS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate and compare the diagnostic potential of high resolution ultrasound with periapical radiographs (PR) and CBCT in assessing granulomas and radicular cysts. METHODS This study included a total of 33 teeth from 33 patients with periapical lesions. Subjects were distributed among three groups. A consisted of teeth that were extracted. B consisted of teeth treated with root-canal treatment followed by apical surgery. C consisted of teeth treated with root-canal treatment only. Pre-treatment PR, ultrasound and CBCT images were obtained for Groups A, B and C and 6 month post-treatment PR and ultrasound images were obtained for Groups B and C. In addition, histopathological analysis was performed on lesions in Groups A and B. Lesions were classified as either cystic lesions or granulomas. Width, height, depth, surface area and volume of lesions were measured using the built-in softwares of the appropriate imaging modalities. Measurements were compared by Wilcoxon and paired sample t tests. Ultrasound and histopathological findings were compared with κ and Mc Nemar. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS κ coefficient (0.667; p = 0.002) suggested good agreement between ultrasound and histopathology. No statistically significant differences were found among periapical radiography, CBCT and ultrasound in the pre-treatment measurements of lesion width ( p = 0.308) or between CBCT and periapical radiography in the pre-treatment measurements of lesion height ( p = 0.863). In all cases, mean measurement values for all variables were lower for ultrasound than for CBCT. CONCLUSION Ultrasound provided useful information for the diagnosis and assessment of granulomas and radicular cysts.

Abstract
Odontogenic sinusitis (OS) is a highly prevalent, underappreciated and underdiagnosed disease that has been known for over 100 years. Apical periodontitis, periodontal disease and iatrogenic extrusion of foreign bodies into the sinus are the main causes of OS. Although the prevalence of sinus pathosis of dental origin is still controversial, otolaryngologists recognize that in the presence of recalcitrant sinusitis, a dental origin should be considered and properly treated. Currently, cone-beam computed tomography is the gold-standard imaging technique to assess the relationship between dental conditions, especially apical periodontitis and sinus diseases, and whenever this association is detected, patients should be seen by both a dentist and an otolaryngologist in order to achieve complete recovery. This article reviews the current concepts regarding the definitions, diagnosis and management of OS from a clinical point of view.
