Micro–computed Tomography Shaping Ability Assessment of the New Blue Thermal Treated Reciproc Instrument

Shaping outcomes of Reciproc Blue and Rotate in roots canals with band-shaped isthmuses: micro-CT study

OBJECTIVE

This study assessed the outcome of shaping the mesial roots of mandibular first molars containing band-shaped isthmuses with an isthmus floor located at the apical third with Reciproc Blue and Rotate instruments in terms of canal transportation, canal aberrations and unprepared apical canals.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Pair-matched mesial roots of mandibular first molars according to their isthmus location (distance from apical foramina) and size were constructed based on quantitative measurements (length, major and minor diameter at isthmus roof and floor) on preoperative micro-CT scanning (n = 10). The pair-matched specimens were prepared either using Reciproc Blue R25 (25.08v) or Rotate (15.04, 20.05, 25.06) instruments and then subjected to a second micro-CT scanning. Micro-CT scans were analysed to evaluate the canal transportation at the apical foramen and isthmus floor levels and the frequency of procedural errors (separated instruments, artificial canal preparation, cross shaping and unprepared apical canals). Canal transportation values were compared using Mann-Whitney U, and the distribution of procedural errors was compared with chi-square tests with a 5% significance threshold.

RESULTS

Greater transportation values were detected in the apical foramen level compared to the isthmus floor in both groups. No significant difference was detected between Rotate and Reciproc Blue groups in terms of absolute transportation values and the incidence of procedural errors (p > .05).

CONCLUSION

Preparation of mesial root canals containing a band-shaped isthmus at the apical portion with Reciproc Blue and Rotate instruments caused transportation of the original canal position at the isthmus floor and the apical foramen levels and resulted in procedural errors.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

This ex vivo micro-CT study using controlled pair-matched specimens showed that presence of a band-shaped isthmus complicates canal preparation procedure irrespective of the preparation systems.

Disinfection and Shaping of Vertucci Class II Root Canals after Preparation with Two Instrument Systems and Supplementary Ultrasonic Activation of Sodium Hypochlorite

INTRODUCTION

This study compared disinfection and shaping after root canal preparation with either XP-endo Shaper or TruNatomy instrument systems, supplemented by ultrasonic activation of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) with either stainless-steel (SS) or nickel-titanium (NiTi) inserts.

METHODS

Mesial roots from mandibular molars with Vertucci class II configuration were divided into 2 groups (n = 24) based on anatomically paired micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analyses. Pre and postpreparation micro-CT scans were obtained to evaluate the shaping performance. The canals were contaminated with a mixed bacterial culture for 30 days and then subjected to preparation with either XP-endo Shaper or TruNatomy instruments using NaOCl irrigation. Supplementary ultrasonic activation of NaOCl was conducted using either an SS (TruNatomy group) or NiTi (XP-endo Shaper group) insert. Bacteriological samples were taken from the canals before preparation (S1), after preparation (S2), and after the supplementary approach (S3). Bacterial reduction was evaluated using a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.

RESULTS

Preparation with both instrument systems significantly reduced bacterial counts (P < .01). After preparation, 36% (TruNatomy) and 35% (XP-endo Shaper) were negative for bacteria. These values increased to 59% and 65% after ultrasonic activation with the SS and NiTi inserts, respectively. The quantitative data in S2 showed that XP-endo Shaper promoted a significantly higher bacterial reduction than TruNatomy (P < .05). No significant intragroup differences were observed after ultrasonic activation (P > .05), probably because the SS insert promoted a significantly higher S2-to-S3 reduction than the NiTi insert (P < .01). Micro-CT analysis revealed no significant differences in the unprepared areas between the groups (P > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The XP-endo Shaper caused a significantly higher bacterial reduction than TruNatomy in Vertucci class II canals. Better antibacterial results after ultrasonic activation were observed for the SS ultrasonic inserts than for the NiTi inserts.

Influence of brushing motions on the shaping of oval canals by rotary and reciprocating instruments

OBJECTIVE

The effects of brushing on shaping with three different instruments were assessed in oval canals.

DESIGN

Mandibular incisors were assigned to 6 groups (n = 12/group) according to the system, each one with or without brushing: Reciproc Blue, VDW.Rotate, and Race EVO. Micro-computed tomography was performed before and after preparation.

RESULTS

Brushing strokes caused no increase in canal volume, surface area, and structure model index independently of the system (p > 0.05), except for RaCe EVO in the full canal surface area (p < 0.05). Brushing did not increase the prepared areas (p > 0.05), except for Reciproc in the apical canal (p < 0.05). Reciproc with no brushing exhibited less pericervical dentin than with brushing (p < 0.05), while RaCe EVO with brushing resulted in less remaining dentin (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The brushing motion had no effects on the overall shaping performance of the 3 instruments tested. An exception was the increase in prepared surface area in the apical canal segment when the Reciproc instrument was used with brushing strokes.

Advancing Nitinol: From heat treatment to surface functionalization for nickel–titanium (NiTi) instruments in endodontics

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy has been extensively researched in endodontics, particularly in cleaning and shaping the root canal system. Research advances have primarily focused on the design, shape, and geometry of the NiTi files as well as metallurgy and mechanical properties. So far, extensive investigations have been made surrounding surface and thermomechanical treatments, however, limited work has been done in the realm of surface functionalization to augment its performance in endodontics. This review summarizes the unique characteristics, current use, and latest developments in thermomechanically treated NiTi endodontic files. It discusses recent improvements in nano-engineering and the possibility of customizing the NiTi file surface for added functionalization. Whilst clinical translation of this technology has yet to be fully realized, future research direction will lie in the use of nanotechnology.

Effect of foraminal enlargement on microcrack formation and apical transportation: a nano-CT assessment

The aim of this study was to evaluate the foraminal enlargement and its influence on microcrack formation and apical transportation in root canals with apical curvature. Eighteen maxillary lateral incisors with apical curvature were selected by using micro-CT images. Root canals were randomly divided in two groups (n = 9) according to root canal preparation using two working lengths: 1 mm short of the apical foramen (control group) and 1 mm beyond the apical foramen (foraminal enlargement). For both groups Reciproc Blue R40 was used for root canal instrumentation. Specimens were scanned by nano-CT (UniTOM HR) before and after root canal preparation. Percentage, length, and width of microcracks, and apical transportation were assessed. Kappa, chi-square and McNemar tests were used for qualitative analyses while paired and unpaired t-test were used for quantitative analyses (α = 0.05). For both groups, rather similar and low percentages of microcracks were observed before root canal preparation (P > 0.05). The foraminal enlargement promoted new microcracks, not observed in the control group. An increase in microcrack length was observed when the foraminal enlargement was performed (P < 0.05). Higher apical transportation was observed when foraminal enlargement was performed (P < 0.05). Foraminal enlargement using a heat-treated reciprocating file size 40 promoted microcracks and higher apical transportation than root canal preparation up to 1 mm short of apical foramen.

Design, metallurgy, mechanical properties, and shaping ability of 3 heat-treated reciprocating systems: a multimethod investigation

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to compare 3 reciprocating systems regarding design, metallurgy, mechanical properties, and shaping ability.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

New Reciproc Blue R25, WaveOne Gold Primary, and REX 25 instruments (n=41 per group) were analyzed regarding design, metallurgy, and mechanical performance, while shaping ability (untouched canal walls, volume of removed dentin, and hard tissue debris) was tested in 36 anatomically matched root canals of mandibular molars. Results were compared using one-way ANOVA post hoc Tukey and Kruskal-Wallis tests with a significant level set at 5%.

RESULTS

All instruments showed symmetrical cross sections with asymmetrical blades, no radial lands, no major defects, and an almost equiatomic nickel and titanium ratio. The highest R-phase start temperatures were observed with WaveOne Gold (46.1°C) and REX (44.8°C), while Reciproc Blue had the lowest R-phase start (34.5°C) and finish (20°C) temperatures. WaveOne Gold had the lowest time to fracture (169 s) and the highest maximum load (301.6 gf) (P <0.05). The maximum torque of Reciproc Blue (2.2 N.cm) and WaveOne Gold (2.1 N.cm) were similar (P >0.05), but lower than REX (2.6 N.cm) (P <0.05). No statistical differences were observed among instruments in the angle of rotation (P >0.05) and in the shaping ability in both mesial and distal canals (P >0.05).

CONCLUSION

Although the overall design, temperature transition phases and mechanical behavior parameters were different among tested instruments, they were similar in terms of shaping ability.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

All tested heat-treated NiTi reciprocating systems showed similar shaping ability, without clinically significant errors.

Marginal gaps and voids using two warm compaction techniques and different sealers: a micro-CT study

OBJECTIVE

To assess the percentage of marginal gaps and voids in oval-shaped canals obturated by using two warm compaction techniques with a Bio-C sealer and AH Plus Jet.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty canines with oval canals were scanned by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), and root canal preparation was performed with an XP-endo Shaper system and irrigated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. Then, the specimens were paired into four groups (n=10) according to the root canal filling technique and endodontic sealer: Bio-C sealer and continuous wave of condensation, Bio-C sealer and Tagger's hybrid, AH Plus Jet and continuous wave of condensation, and AH Plus Jet and Tagger's hybrid. After root canal filling, a new scan was performed. The percentage of marginal gaps and voids was calculated with the ImageJ software, and the data were analyzed statistically using two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests, with a significance level of 5%.

RESULTS

The percentage of marginal gaps was significantly lower in the Bio-C sealer than in AH Plus Jet (p=0.021) regardless of the technique. However, no difference was found in the percentage of voids between root canal filling techniques and the endodontic sealer (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Both sealers and techniques demonstrated good quality of root canal filling. However, the use of the Bio-C sealer enhanced the filling ability by reducing marginal gaps, regardless of the root canal filling technique.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

This study highlights the better performance of the Bio-C sealer in the quality of the root canal filling, reducing marginal gaps when compared to AH Plus Jet independent of the technique.

Comparison of five single-file systems in the preparation of severely curved root canals: an ex vivo study

BACKGROUND

The ex vivo study is to compare the root canal preparation outcomes achieved by five nickel-titanium single-file instrumentation systems (M3-L, Reciproc Blue, V-Taper 2H, WaveOne Gold, XP-endo Shaper) in severely curved molar root canals.

METHODS

A total of 60 root canals were selected from extracted human molar teeth with curvatures ranging from 25° to 50° and divided into five groups based on the instrumentation system employed (n = 12). Before and after root canal preparation, a Micro-CT scan was taken, and pre- and post-operative data were analyzed to evaluate the following parameters: volume increment of root canals (VI), untouched root canal areas (UTA), and canal transportation (CT). Apically extruded debris (AD) was collected during preparation. After that, all samples were separated into two parts and examined respectively by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to assess cleaning ability. Data were statistically analyzed with ANOVA (UTA, AD, VI) or Kruskal-Wallis test (CT, SEM-score), the level of significance was set at α = 0.05.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences between the five systems regarding the AD, VI, and UTA parameters (P > 0.05). In terms of CT, no significant difference was noted at the straight section of canal and apical levels, while XP-endo Shaper showed less canal transportation than M3-L at the level of curved vertex (P < 0.05), and the centering ability of V-Taper 2H was significantly better than WaveOne Gold at the initial point of bending (P < 0.05). Debris and smear layers were present on the canal walls of all specimens, the apical thirds of the canal presented higher SEM scores than the coronal thirds in all groups (P < 0.05). Reciproc Blue and XP-endo Shaper showed fewer smear scores than WaveOne Gold in the apical thirds (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively), and no statistical difference was found between other groups in the middle and coronal thirds.

CONCLUSION

The five single-file systems evaluated performed equally in apically debris extrusion, dentin removal, and untouched root canal areas, while XP-endo Shaper and V-Taper 2H resulted in less canal transportation compared to M3-L and WaveOne Gold. Regarding cleaning ability, Reciproc Blue and XP-endo Shaper were associated with less smear layer than WaveOne Gold in the apical thirds.

Shaping ability of new reciprocating or rotary instruments with two cross-sectional designs: an ex vivo study

AIM

This study compared the shaping ability of four new reciprocating and rotary nickel-titanium instruments, with triangular or S-shaped cross-section, in the mesial canals of mandibular molars using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) evaluation.

METHODOLOGY

Twenty-four extracted mandibular molars with Vertucci's class IV configuration in the mesial root were selected for this study. The teeth were matched in fours according to anatomic similarities as revealed by micro-CT and then distributed into four groups of 12 mesial canals each according to the instrumentation technique: Reciproc Blue, R-motion, VDW.Rotate, and RaCe EVO. The final apical size of instrumentation was 30/.04 for 3 systems and 25/08 for the Reciproc Blue instrument. Micro-CT scans were taken before and after preparation to evaluate the canal volume, area and unprepared surface areas, as well as the centering ability, and the canal:root width ratio.

RESULTS

Preparation with all systems significantly increased the volume and area of the canals (P < .05). There were no significant differences between groups regarding the amount of unprepared areas in both the apical and full canal lengths (P > .05). Variation in the centre of gravity showed no significant difference between groups either (P > .05). The canal:root width ratio at levels 0 and 4 mm apically to the coronal canal opening was significantly increased by all systems (P < .01), with no significant differences between groups (P > .05). The canal width never exceeded 40% of the root width.

CONCLUSIONS

Reciprocating or rotary instruments, with a triangular or an S-shaped cross-section, performed equally in shaping Vertucci's class IV mesial canals of mandibular molars.

Efficacy of reciprocating instruments and final irrigant activation protocols on retreatment of mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molars: a micro-CT analysis

Objectives

This study evaluated the efficacy of 3 reciprocating systems and the effects of 2 instruments for irrigant activation on filling material removal.

Materials and Methods

Forty mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molars were prepared up to size 25.06 and obturated. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) examination #1 was performed. Teeth were then divided into 4 groups (n = 10), according to the retreatment protocol: (1) manual, (2) Reciproc Blue, (3) WaveOne Gold, and (4) X1 Blue. Micro-CT examinations #2 and #3 were performed after filling removal and repreparation, respectively. Next, all teeth were divided into 2 new groups (n = 20) according to the irrigant activation protocol: XP Clean (XP Clean size 25.02) and Flatsonic (Flatsonic ultrasonic tip). Micro-CT examination #4 was performed after irrigant activation. Statistical analysis was performed with a significance level set at 5%.

Results

WaveOne Gold removed a significantly greater amount of filling material than the manual group (p < 0.05). The time to reach the WL was similar for all reciprocating systems (p > 0.05). X1 Blue was faster than the manual group (p < 0.05). Only manual group improved the filling material removal after the repreparation stage (p < 0.05). Both activation protocols significantly improved the filling material removal (p < 0.05), without differences between them (p > 0.05).

Conclusions

None of the tested instruments completely removed the filling material. X1 Blue size 25.06 reached the working length in the shortest time. XP Clean and Flatsonic improved the filling material removal.

Micro-computed Evaluation of Canal Transportation and Centering Ability of 5 Rotary and Reciprocating Systems with Different Metallurgical Properties and Surface Treatments in Curved Root Canals

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to evaluate the transportation and centering ability of 5 different rotary and reciprocating file systems with different metallurgical properties and surface treatments in curved root canals.

METHODS

Fifty mesiobuccal round canals of upper molars with a curvature of 25°-40° were assigned to 5 experimental groups (n = 12) according to the instrumentation system used: ProTaper Next (Dentsply Sirona, York, PA), Reciproc Blue (RCB [VDW, Munich, Germany]), Reciproc (VDW), TruNatomy (TRN [Dentsply Sirona]), and XP-endo Shaper (FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland). During instrumentation, 5 mL 2.5% sodium hypochlorite was used in each root canal. The final irrigation protocol included 15% EDTA followed by sodium hypochlorite irrigation. The micro-computed tomographic scanning of the samples was performed before and after instrumentation to analyze the transportation and centering ability at 3 canal levels. The results were analyzed with the 1-way analysis of variance test with the corresponding post hoc test.

RESULTS

Overall, RCB caused significantly more canal transportation compared with the other techniques (P < .05). There were no significant differences between the other techniques (P > .05). ProTaper Next had a significantly better ability to stay within the central axis of the root canal compared with the Reciproc and RCB techniques (P = .046 and P = .017, respectively). In the apical third, all techniques caused similar apical transportation and centering ability (P > .05). In the middle and cervical parts of the canal, the RCB caused significantly greater canal transportation than the other techniques (P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Under the limitations of this study, all tested techniques had similar transportation and centering abilities in the apical part of the canal. However, the overall results and those in the middle and coronal parts of the canal indicated that reciprocating instruments resulted in more canal transportation and less centered preparations.

Electrochemical dissolution of nickel-titanium instrument fragments in root canals of extracted human maxillary molars using a small reservoir of electrolyte

AIM

To evaluate the viability of the electrochemical dissolution of fragments of fractured NiTi instruments in root canals of extracted human maxillary molars, using two electrodes and the solution restricted to a small reservoir coupled to the pulp chamber. The primary hypothesis was that this method enables the reduction of fragment volume and re-establishment of the root canal path with a size 08 K-file, both in simulated canals and in extracted human maxillary molars.

METHODOLOGY

Fragments of F1 ProTaper instruments were polarized in simulated root canals and in distobuccal root canals of extracted maxillary molars using a new method, with the solution restricted to a small acrylic microcell coupled to each resin block or pulp chamber. Two electrodes were used, where one was kept in contact with the intracanal fragment and another was positioned in the solution present in the acrylic microcell. After the tests, a size 08 K-file was used passively to verify the possibility of bypassing the fragment, which was also confirmed by radiographic analysis. Micro-CT analysis of the teeth was used before and after fragment dissolution to evaluate the volume, length and porosity of the fragments. The D'Agostino-Pearson normality test was used to verify the distribution of the data. A paired t-test (P < 0.05) was used to compare the volume, length and porosity of the fragments before and after the dissolution tests.

RESULTS

After dissolution, all fragments could be bypassed with a size 08 K-file in both simulated canals and in extracted teeth. The dissolution process did not result in significant reduction of neither the fragment length nor the fragment porosity. However, it resulted in a significant reduction of fragment volume (paired t-test, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The electrochemical dissolution of fragments of NiTi files in root canals of extracted human maxillary molars using two electrodes, and the solution restricted to a small reservoir coupled to the pulp chamber resulted in a significant reduction of fragment volume. The re-establishment of the root canal path with the passive insertion of size 08 K-files was possible in all samples after the tests, both in simulated canals and in extracted teeth.

Effect of 2 Heat-treated Nickel-Titanium Files on Enlargement and Deformation of the Apical Foramen in Curved Canals: A Scanning Electronic Microscopic Study

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to evaluate under scanning electronic microscopy the enlargement and deformation of the apical foramen of curved mesiobuccal roots with both reciprocating and rotary single-file systems made of a newly heat-treated alloy through the use of Reciproc Blue (REC Blue; VDW, Munich, Germany) and XP-endo Shaper (XPS; FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland).

METHODS

Forty mesiobuccal roots of mandibular and maxillary molars presenting a curvature ranging from 20°-40° were used in this study. The apical foramens were initially scanned with a scanning electronic microscope under 200× magnification. Roots were divided into 2 groups (n = 20): the REC Blue group instrumented with the REC Blue system and the XPS group instrumented with the XPS system. Both groups were instrumented at the foramen. The apical foramens were scanned after root canal preparation. The area, circularity, and ratio of the Feret diameters were calculated from each image. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney, and Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical analysis (P ≤ .05).

RESULTS

The area of the foramen increased significantly after canal shaping with REC Blue and XPS. The variation of the area was significantly greater with XPS. However, there were no significant differences in circularity and the ratio of the Feret diameters with both instruments.

CONCLUSIONS

No transportation was found when using REC Blue and XPS. The newly heat-treated nickel-titanium alloy did not promote deformation of the apical foramen in curved canals.

New Ultrasonic Tip Decreases Uninstrumented Surface and Debris in Flattened Canals: A Micro-computed Tomographic Study

INTRODUCTION

The preparation of flattened root canals using reciprocating or rotary nickel-titanium instruments associated with the Flatsonic ultrasonic tip (Helse Ultrasonic, Santa Rosa de Viterbo, SP, Brazil) was evaluated by micro-computed tomographic imaging.

METHODS

Twenty-four flattened distal canals of mandibular molars with a buccolingual diameter 4 or more times larger than the mesiodistal diameter were selected. The root canals were randomly divided into 2 experimental groups for preparation: a Reciproc Blue (RB; VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) 40/.06 file in reciprocating motion or ProDesign Logic (PDL; Easy Equipamentos Odontológicos, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil) 40/.01 and 40/.05 files in rotary motion (n = 12). A complementary preparation was performed with the Flatsonic ultrasonic tip for both preparations. Micro-computed tomographic scanning at a resolution of 8.74 μm was performed before and after preparation with the nickel-titanium instruments and after the use of the Flatsonic tip. The percentages of increase in volume, debris, and uninstrumented surface were analyzed. The data obtained were submitted to the paired and unpaired t test, analysis of variance, and the Tukey test (α = 5%).

RESULTS

The percentage increase in volume, debris, and uninstrumented surface was similar between RB and PDL in the entire root canal (P > .05). The PDL promoted a lower percentage of debris in the cervical third and a lower percentage of increase in volume in the apical third in comparison with RB (P < .05). The Flatsonic decreased debris and uninstrumented surface after PDL preparation in all thirds (P < .05). After preparation with RB, the Flatsonic decreases the debris in the cervical third and the uninstrumented surface in the cervical and middle thirds (P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The preparation of flattened root canals using RB or PDL produced a high percentage of debris and uninstrumented surface. The Flatsonic ultrasonic tip significantly improved the cleaning of flattened root canals.

Canal Transportation and Centring Ability of Reciproc and Reciproc Blue With or Without Use of Glide Path Instruments: A CBCT Study

Objective

The objective of this ex vivo study was to evaluate canal transportation and centring ability of Reciproc and Reciproc blue systems in curved root canals with or without prior use of PathFile rotary system (PF) using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

Methods

One hundred and twenty curved root canals from maxillary and mandibular premolars were selected. Canals were divided randomly into 4 groups (n=30): Reciproc 25 (R25), (PF+R25), Reciproc Blue 25 (RB25), (PF+RB 25). Specimens were scanned before and after root canal preparation. Using CBCT, root canal transportation and centring ability was assessed by measuring the shortest distance from the edge of uninstrumented canal to the periphery of the root (mesial and distal) before and after preparation. Data were analysed using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey test. The p value was set at 0.05.

Results

Less transportation and better centring ability occurred when PF was used before R25 or RB25 (P<0.0001). There was no significant difference between R25 and RB25 groups.

Conclusion

Using PF before R25 and RB25 resulted in less root canal transportation and better centring ability. The specific thermo-mechanical treatment of RB25 did not provide better results when compared to R25.

The effect of blue thermal treatment on endodontic instruments and apical debris extrusion during retreatment procedures

AIM

To determine the effect of blue thermal treatment on Reciproc (VDW, Munich, Germany) endodontic instruments and the amount of apically extruded debris during retreatment procedures.

METHODOLOGY

Thirty extracted mandibular molar teeth having mesial roots with a degree of curvature less than 20° and having an initial apical size equivalent to a size 10 K-file were selected. The mesial roots of the teeth were removed from the cementoenamel junction to obtain a 15-mm root length. The mesiobuccal canals were prepared to size F2 using the ProTaper Universal system (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), filled with gutta-percha and 2Seal (VDW) using the lateral compaction technique and then randomly divided into two groups (n = 15). The root fillings were removed with one of the following instruments using a crown-down preparation technique: M-Wire Reciproc or Reciproc Blue (both VDW). Apically extruded debris was collected in pre-weighed Eppendorf tubes. The Eppendorf tubes were then stored in an incubator at 70 °C for five days to evaporate the distilled water. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test (P = 0.05).

RESULTS

Reciproc Blue (1.42 ± 0.4491 mg) extruded significantly less debris apically than M-Wire Reciproc (2.56 ± 1.0232 mg) (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Blue thermal treatment of Reciproc instruments was associated with less debris extrusion during retreatment procedures.

Influence of Two Preparation Techniques on Transportation of Simulated Type II Root Canals

Introduction:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of canal configuration in simulated type II root canals that were instrumented by two different techniques using ProTaper Universal rotary files.

Methods and Materials:

Sixty simulated type II root canal in resin blocks were made and randomly divided into two groups. Pre and post-instrumentation images of resin blocks were prepared using stereomicroscope from three surfaces of blocks included two longitudinal section (mesiodistally and buccolingually), and one cross sectional surface. In the first group (G1) the straight canal was instrumented to the working length and the other canal was instrumented up to the area of canals junction. In second group (G2) both canals were instrumented to working length. The superimposed pre and post instrumentation images were assessed by the Adobe Photoshop software. The degree of transportation, centering ability, perimeter, surface and aspetic ratio (AR) in cross section and longitudinal section at apex, 3 mm and 5 mm above the apex, were measured. SPSS software, t-test and Mann-Whitney test were used for statistics analysis.

Result:

In mesiodistal direction, canal transportation was more (P=0.024) only in junction point in G2 which both canals were instrumented to working length. Also, surface changes were more significant (P=0.02) in G2 in cross sectional direction. The other parameter and also apical transportation had not significant difference in two groups.

Conclusion:

According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that both two preparation methods of type II canals can be used by rotary instruments.
