Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In this article, we present a literature review of methods used to measure the shaping ability of endodontic rotary files, including the selection of endodontic sample type (extracted teeth versus simulated blocks) and an imaging evaluation method. This review was conducted as background research to identify concerns that arise when designing research studies in this domain and propose how the field can plan more systematic studies going forward. METHODS A literature search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and e B-on databases, including studies published in English from January 2010 to June 2024. Only studies that specified in vitro or ex vivo methods for evaluating the endodontic performance of NiTi rotary files on canal transportation and centering ability were considered. RESULTS A total of 86 studies met the inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 651. Of these, 67 studies used extracted teeth, while 20 utilized simulated root canals in resin blocks. For evaluation methods, 55 studies employed Micro-Computed Tomography and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (MCT + CBCT), 30 used Double Digital Images/Radiographs/Photographs (DDIR + DDIP) with software analysis, 1 used both DDIR and MCT, 1 used high-precision nano-CT, and 1 used a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that the MCT method and its advanced variations appear superior in many cases for evaluating the quality of root canal instrumentation due to their ability to provide detailed three-dimensional images. We also discuss the pros and cons of other evaluation methods, including CBCT and DDIR. Finally, we identify important factors to consider for optimizing future cross-study comparisons. This work highlights the importance of being familiar with shaping ability assessment methods as new instruments are introduced to the market.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the frequency and type of endodontic procedural errors in cases indicated for retreatment through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis. Materials and Methods The sample consisted of 96 CBCT scans, encompassing 122 permanent teeth with fully formed roots. Errors included perforation, instrument fracture, canal transportation, missed canals, and inadequate apical limit of filling. Additionally, potential risk factors were analyzed and subjected to statistical modeling. Results The most frequent procedural error observed was the inadequate apical limit of filling, followed by canal transportation, perforation, missed canal, and instrument fracture. Statistically significant associations were identified between various procedural errors and specific factors. These include canal transportation and root canal wall, with the buccal wall being the most commonly affected; missed canal and tooth type, particularly the palatine and second mesiobuccal canal canals; inadequate apical limit of filling and root curvature, showing a higher deviation to the mesial direction in severely curved canals; inadequate apical limit of filling and the presence of calcifications, with underfilling being the most frequent; canal transportation and periapical lesion, notably with deviation to the buccal direction; and the direction of perforation and periapical lesion, most frequently occurring to buccal direction. Conclusions CBCT emerges as a valuable tool in identifying procedural errors and associated factors, crucial for their prevention and management.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the root canal shaping effect of ProTaper Gold (PTG) versus ProTaper Next (PTN) instrumentation systems, and of a manual #15 K-type file (K15) versus the ProGlider (PG) mechanized instrument for glide path creation, in severely curved mesial canals. Twenty-four mandibular molars with two separate mesial canals were anatomically matched using computed tomographic scanning, and then divided into two groups (n=12) according to the glide path instrument used, either K15 or PG. In all teeth, the PTG system was used to prepare the mesiobuccal canal, and the PTN, the mesiolingual canal. The teeth were scanned by computed microtomography, before and after root canal preparation, and the values of the initial volume, final volume, volumetric variation, untouched walls, and canal transportation variables were determined. The data were analyzed using the two-way ANOVA test, and the Tukey test for multiple comparisons. There was no significant difference among the study groups regarding volumetric variation or root canal transportation, either in the cervical, middle or apical thirds, or in the entire root canal (p>0.05). In the apical third, the percentage of untouched walls was significantly higher in groups using K15 than in those using PG (p<0.05), namely 33.144% and 23.285%, respectively, irrespective of the instrumentation system. In the other regions, there was no difference between K15 and PG regarding this variable. It was concluded that PG was associated with a lower rate of untouched walls in the apical region than K15.

Abstract
Context The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the centering ability and canal transportation of TruNatomy, OneCurve, and Jizai file systems to assess their performance in oval-shaped canals using cone-beam computed tomography imaging. Materials and Methods Forty-two fully formed single-rooted mandibular premolars were selected with a buccolingual canal size 2-2.5 times the mesiodistal size at 5 mm from the apex, with 0°-10° canal curvature with a 5-6 mm radius, at 5 mm from the apex. The teeth were divided into three groups (n = 14) and prepared with TruNatomy, OneCurve, and Jizai files based on the manufacturer's instructions. Cone-beam computed tomographic images were taken before and after instrumentation. The canal transportation and centering ability was calculated at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the apex in both mesiodistal and buccolingual directions. Statistical Analysis Intergroup comparison was done using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Intragroup comparison was done using Freidman test. A comparison of categorical variables was done using the Chi-square test. Results The results obtained did not present any statistically significant difference between the three groups, with TruNatomy and OneCurve showing relatively lesser canal transportation and better centering ratio when compared to the Jizai file system. Conclusions It can, therefore, be concluded that all three systems used in the study are capable of safely preparing root canals with minimal errors.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the canal transportation tendencies and centering ability of the TruNatomy shaper (TN) and XP-endo shaper (XPS) rotary systems in oval-shaped canals with moderate root curvature (15°-25°), using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty single-rooted permanent human teeth were chosen after considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The teeth were divided into two groups (n = 30). The test group was instrumented with TN files and the other with XPS according to manufacturer's instructions. CBCT images were taken before and after instrumentation to record the root canal distances from mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual borders of the root at 3, 5, and 7 mm distances from the root apex using a specific formula. Statistical analysis was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software program, version 20.0. The data were analyzed using the unpaired t test. RESULTS Both TN and XPS were safe for use in oval-shaped canals with moderate root curvature. However, the XPS showed higher buccolingual transportation as compared with TN at 3 mm from the apex and higher mesiodistal transportation at 3 and 5 mm levels from the apex as compared with TN. CONCLUSION Canal transportation has been detected in both systems; however, the values obtained were within the safe range (<0.3 mm). Overall, no significant difference was observed between TN and XPS (p > 0.05) in their canal transportation tendencies and centering ability. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The study assesses the canal centering and transportation tendencies of the recently launched TN rotary system in extracted teeth with a combination of morphologies. The findings of the study are significant clinically as minimum transportation of the canal, minimal dentin removal, efficient disinfection, and three-dimensional obturation of the root canal are considered important factors in deciding the prognosis of endodontic therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of K-type stainless steel hand instruments (Mani Inc. ), Fanta AF™ Ledge Correction (LC) (Fanta Dental), and Hyflex EDM (Coltene-Whaledent) for ledge correction, canal transport, centric ability, and shaping (preparation) time after an artificial ledge has been bypassed manually in highly curved canals using acrylic blocks. METHODS Forty-two resin blocks, each with a radius of 5 mm (Endo Trainer Block, VDW) and an apical inclination of 55°, were used. Under stereomicroscope magnification, standard artificial ledges were created on acrylic blocks, and attempts were then made to eliminate them using hand instruments, FantaAF™ LC, and Hyflex EDM. Before and after images were obtained using a stereomicroscope and compared using Photoshop. RESULTS Fanta AF™ LC and Hyflex EDM were found to be more effective for correcting ledges than hand instruments. The use of hand instruments resulted in the greatest transportation away from the canal curvature in the apical area. The canal shaping was completed in the shortest amount of time using Fanta AF™ LC, followed by HyFlex EDM and then the hand instruments. CONCLUSION In terms of centric ability, the order from best to worst is as follows: Fanta AF™ LC, Hyflex EDM, and hand instruments. After the ledge was manually bypassed with hand instruments in the root canals, Hyflex EDM and Fanta AF™ LC were found to be more effective than hand instruments in reshaping the previously unreachable region between the ledge and the foramen apical.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Manual or mechanized instruments can be used for root canal preparation. Manual instrumentation using K-files is widely used in primary teeth, but there are many limitations. Mechanized root canal preparation can lead to easy access to all canals, decrease instrumentation time, and result in more funnel-shaped root canals, resulting in a more predictable uniform paste fill. AIM This study aimed to evaluate the shaping ability and instrumentation time of VDW.ROTATE™ and EdgeTaper Platinum™ during the preparation of resin-printed primary molars. Hand K-files were used as a reference for comparison. DESIGN Sixty-six resin-based maxillary second primary molars, obtained from extracted tooth cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) image and printed on a three-dimensional printer, were divided into three groups: VDW.ROTATE™, EdgeTaper Platinum™, and K-files. The specimens were scanned using CBCT imaging before and after root canal preparation. Images were registered using a dedicated software, and changes (Δ) in the canal area, volume, and untouched canal surface were calculated. Instrumentation time was evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS program. RESULTS There was no significant difference among the tested file systems for Δ canal volume and area (p > .05). VDW.ROTATE™, however, showed significantly lower untouched canal surface area than other systems in all roots (p < .001). The VDW.ROTATE™ was found to be significantly faster (6.47 ± 0.39 min) than EdgeTaper Platinum™ (7.71 ± 0.73 min) and K-files (8.22 ± 0.72 min), (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS The shaping ability and the instrumentation time were directly influenced by the root canal instrumentation system used during the preparation of resin-printed primary molars, with VDW.ROTATE™ being the faster system and associated with the lower amount of untouched canal surface area.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of continuous chelation on apical transportation and centrality in shaped curved canals prepared with a martensitic file system and evaluated by micro-CT. Twenty-four lower molar canals with a curvature of 25º-40º were scanned pre-operatively with micro-CT and divided into 2 groups according to two different irrigation regimens (n = 12). Group 1 was irrigated with NaOCl, group 2 with Dual Rinse. All canals were prepared with VDW.ROTATE system. The samples were scanned post-operatively and evaluated at 1, 3 and 5 mm from the apex to determine apical transportation and canal centrality using VG Studio software. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS software using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups for both apical transportation and canal centrality at any of the levels studied (p < 05). The use of continuous chelation during the instrumentation of the canals with martensitic alloy files does not produce greater transportation and does not generate changes in centralization compared to NaOCl-only irrigation. Combined chelation and disinfection while shaping with martensitic NiTi can simplify the irrigation regimen without inducing iatrogenic aberrations.

Abstract
Background This in vitro study aims to compare rotary files (Fanta and Zuanba) with manual K files according to the amount of dentin removed and canal transportation in primary mandibular second molars by CBCT images. Methods This experimental study was conducted on 60 extracted human second primary molars. That were divided into three groups according to root canal preparation group "I" instrumented with manual K-files, group "II" instrumented with rotary Fanta files, and group "III" instrumented with rotary Zuanba files. After root canal preparation, teeth were scanned before and after mechanical preparation with CBCT scanner. Then the amount of dentin removed was determined at three levels, including the coronal, middle and apical levels. Data were statically analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test. Result No statistically significant difference in the amount of dentin removed were noted between the manual and the rotary groups at the coronal and apical RC levels (P = 0.420) and (P = 0.819) respectively but significant difference was noted at the middle third (P = 0.043). Regarding RC transportation, no significant difference was noted among the three groups with the exception of the apical RC level (P = 0.043). Conclusion Although no significant differences were noted between rotary and manual files, the rotary files showed better performance.

Abstract
The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shaping ability of
reciprocating and continuous rotary systems after root canal retreatment. After
preparation and root canal filling, mesial canals of 54 mandibular molars were
distributed into 3 groups (n=18), according to the filling material removal and
re-instrumentation protocols: WOG group - WaveOne Gold system; PTN group -
ProTaper Next system; and PTU group - ProTaper Universal system. Cone-beam
computed tomographic (CBCT) images acquisition of the mesial root canals was
performed at different moments: (1) before instrumentation (unprepared root
canals), (2) after preparation and filling, (3) after filling material removal
and (4) re-instrumentation. The apical transportation (AT), centering ability
(CA) and change in root canal diameter were assessed by CBCT analysis. The
remaining filling material quantification was performed by radiographic
examination. The statistical analyses were performed using the 3-way ANOVA,
Tukey-Kramer, Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn multiple Comparison tests (p<0.05). The
tested instruments did not show full CA (=1.0). PTN group had greater AT at the
5th mm in comparison with the WOG group (p<0.05). After re-instrumentation,
WOG group had greater root canal diameter change at the 1st and 5th mm than PTN
and PTU groups (p<0.05). There was no significant difference among groups
when comparing the amount of remaining filling material after re-instrumentation
(p>0.05). The tested systems provided minimal alteration in root canal
morphology at the apical portion after root canal retreatment. However, WOG
promoted greater change in root canal diameter.

Abstract
Background This study evaluated and compared the shaping ability of four advanced single-file nickel-titanium (NiTi) systems during the preparation of curved second mesiobuccal (MB2) canals in maxillary first molar replicas fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing via micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) imaging. Methods A total of 60 3D-printed maxillary first molar replicas were constructed from one extracted tooth, with an angle of curvature ranging from 15° to 25°. The MB2 canals from these 60 replicas were divided into 4 groups of 15 replicas according to the canal instrumentation system used, namely, Waveone gold (WOG), Reciproc blue (RCB), XP-endo shaper (XPS) and M3-L. The specimens were scanned before and after preparation using Micro-CT. The pre- and post-instrumentation images of each specimen were superimposed, and the amount of resin removed, the change in surface area, the canal transportation, and centering ability were assessed using the Mimics software. Instrumentation time was also recorded. One-way analysis of variance and least significant difference (LSD) tests were used to statistically compare the groups. The significance level was set at 5%. Results Instrumentation time with M3-L was significantly longer than the other systems (P<0.05). The amount of resin removed and the change in surface area generated by the 4 systems were different at the apical, middle, and coronal thirds, and the total canal (P<0.05). Overall, WOG and XPS resulted in the less change than RCB and M3-L. There was no significant difference among the groups at the middle third regarding canal transportation and centering ability (P>0.05). However, a significant difference was found at the apical level (P<0.05), where RCB showed the poorest centering ability and the highest canal transportation (P<0.05). In addition, XPS resulted in the least canal transportation (P<0.05) at the coronal level, while there was no significant difference between the four groups in terms of centering ability. Conclusions The M3-L instrument required more time to prepare the curved MB2 canals compared with the other systems. Overall, WOG and XPS showed the least resin removal and surface area change. M3-L, XPS, and WOG instruments respected the original canal curvature better than RCB files.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The aim of the present study is to compare the efficacy of three root canal preparation systems in the shaping of 3D-printed root canal replicas of single rooted teeth. Materials and Methods: Sixty 3D-printed root canal replicas were produced and divided into three groups, each consisting of twenty samples. Each group was shaped with a different instrument: Reciproc Blue R25/08 (VDW GmbH, Munich, Gemany), WaveOne Gold Primary 25/07 (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and ProTaper Gold F2 25/08 (Denstply Sirona). To ensure the reproducibility of pre- and post-operative CBCT images of the root canals, the endodontic printed replicas were placed in a mould of silicon impression material. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) software was used to compare pre- and post-instrumentation images collected at three levels of the root canal length: 3, 6, and 9 mm from the apical foramen. The amount of transportation, centring ability, and curvature angle after shaping were evaluated for each system. The results were statistically analysed and compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Regarding the transportation of the root canal after shaping, significant differences between groups at 3 mm (p = 0.010721) and 6 mm (p = 0.000046) were recorded in the mesio-distal direction, while in the bucco-lingual significant differences were only observed at 6 mm (p = 0.000554). Reciproc Blue removed more dentin from the mesial and buccal wall of the root canal. When evaluating the centring ability of the three systems, significant differences were observed between the groups at the level of 9 mm (p = 0.037258) in the mesio-distal direction, and at the level of 6 mm (p = 0.038197) in the bucco-lingual direction. Significant differences of the canal curvature angle after shaping were also observed between groups (p = 0.000001). Reciproc Blue straightened the curvature the most, while ProTaper Gold the least. Conclusions: All systems produced minor root canal transportation. No instrument was able to achieve a perfect centring preparation of the root canal. All systems produced a small degree of root canal straightening.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluated the effect of repeated uses and autoclaving in the instrumented area, fracture resistance, and time of instrumentation of thermally treated nickel-titanium reciprocating systems. Materials and Methods Two hundred simulated canals were instrumented using Reciproc Blue and WaveOne Gold. Each file was used up to 10 times or until fracture. The instrumented area was measured in pre- and post-operative images, using ImageJ software. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis evaluated the number of uses of instruments before fracture. Instrumented area and time of instrumentation were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis. Correlations among the number of uses and instrumented area were measured. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results Reciproc Blue presented a higher estimated number of uses in comparison with WaveOne Gold (p = 0.026), but autoclaving did not affect the resistance to fracture of instruments (p > 0.05). The instrumented area was different among the evaluated groups (p = 0.039), and the instrumented area along the uses of both tested instruments was reduced. With the time of instrumentation, there was also a significant difference among the evaluated groups; the groups without sterilization cycles were faster, in comparison to those submitted to autoclaving (p = 0.010). Conclusions Reciproc Blue was more resistant than WaveOne Gold, suffering later fracture. Additionally, the sterilization cycles did not influence the estimated number of uses of thermally treated reciprocating instruments, but the instrumented area of root canals was reduced along with the repeated uses of both instruments.

Abstract
The purpose is to evaluate canal transportation of a new heat-treated NiTi system, the Endostar E3 Azure operated in continuous rotation or reciprocation. 40 resin blocks were divided into two groups. The first was shaped in continuous rotation while the second in reciprocation. A preoperative and two postoperative images were taken, one after the use of the 20/06 and one after the 25/06. The images were superimposed to determine canal transportation. Time required for canal shaping was recorded. One-sample and student t tests, repeated-measure analyses of variance, univariate analyses and Bonferroni multiple comparisons tests were used for statistical analysis. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. There was no significant difference between continuous and reciprocating motion with the 20/06 and 25/06, respectively, at 1 mm (p = 0.761, p = 0.559), 2 mm (p = 0.584, p = 0.810) and 3 mm (p = 0.651, p = 0.070). The reciprocating motion showed significantly less canal transportation at 5 mm (p = 0.049, p < 0.001) and 7 mm (p < 0.001, p < 0.001) for the 20/06 and 25/0.6. Continuous rotation was more time-consuming than reciprocation (p < 0.001). The Endostar E3 Azure in reciprocation respected the original canal curvature better than in continuous rotation at all levels, and required less time to prepare artificial curved canals. Endodontists should know the shaping abilities of novel heat-treated NiTi files, regarding canal transportation and its relation with the instruments' motion and apical diameter enlargement.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of the study was to compare the canal transportation, centering ability, and dentin removal of Profit S3 (PS3), One Curve (OC), and ProTaper Gold (PTG) systems using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Thirty extracted human single-rooted premolars were used in the present study. Preinstrumentation scanning of all the teeth in arch form was taken using CBCT. To increase standardization, crowns were removed and only teeth measuring 16 mm were included in the study. The samples were randomly divided into three groups, with ten samples in each group; Group I was instrumented with PS3, Group II was instrumented with OC, and Group III – PTG. Postinstrumentation scans were performed, and the two scans were compared to determine canal transportation, centering ability, and dentin removal at 3, 6, and 9 mm, from the apex. Statistical Analysis: One-way-ANOVA and the independent t-test were done for the pairwise comparison. The significance level was set at P = 0.05; statistical analysis was performed with SPSS statistics version 20.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: The mean canal centering ratio and canal apical transportation for PS3, OC and PTG show no statistical difference (P > 0.05). The mean value of dentin removal showed a statistically significant difference between the three groups (P < 0.05). PS3 and OC rotary file showed less removal of dentin compared to PTG (P < 0.00). Conclusion: It was evident that PS3, OC, and PTG had no statistically significant difference when analyzed based on canal transportation and canal centering ratio. However, there was a significant difference among the three groups comparing the removal of dentin. PS3 and OC rotary file showed less removal of dentin compared to PTG.

Abstract
The separation of endodontic files and strip perforation are among procedural intraoperative complications which may ultimately lead to the failure of root canal treatment. The aim of the present study was to compare the diagnostic potential of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital periapical radiographs in detecting separated rotary files and strip perforation in filled canals. Fifty human mandibular molars were selected for this study. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups based on endodontic errors (i.e., file separation and strip perforation). In each group, 25 of 50 mesial canals were randomly chosen for simulating the errors, while the other 25 canals were considered as the control group. In group one, a simulation of the separation of rotary files was performed using ProTaper F2 files. Strip perforation of the root canals in group two was achieved by number 2 and 3 Gates Glidden drills in the coronal third of the root canals. Digital periapical radiographs in two different horizontal angles and high-resolution CBCT scans were obtained from the teeth mounted on a dry human mandible with simulated soft tissue covering. Three experienced observers who were unaware of the study groups evaluated the digital periapical and CBCT image sets in two separate readings. Intraobserver and interobserver agreements, as well as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV), were calculated and compared. Intraobserver and interobserver agreements ranged from poor to excellent and poor to good, respectively. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV for digital radiography in detecting separated files were 0.950, 0.813, 0.957, 0.929, and 0.880, respectively. The same values for CBCT were 0.747, 0.667, 0.900, 0.833, and 0.783, respectively. For the diagnosis of strip perforation, these values were 0.855, 0.800, 0.909, 0.889, and 0.833 for periapical radiography and 0.955, 1.000, 0.920, 0.926, and 1.000 for CBCT. In conclusion, CBCT was superior for diagnosing strip perforation of the filled root canals, while digital periapical radiographs performed better in the detection of separated rotary files.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this ex vivo study was to evaluate canal transportation and centring ability of Reciproc and Reciproc blue systems in curved root canals with or without prior use of PathFile rotary system (PF) using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Methods One hundred and twenty curved root canals from maxillary and mandibular premolars were selected. Canals were divided randomly into 4 groups (n=30): Reciproc 25 (R25), (PF+R25), Reciproc Blue 25 (RB25), (PF+RB 25). Specimens were scanned before and after root canal preparation. Using CBCT, root canal transportation and centring ability was assessed by measuring the shortest distance from the edge of uninstrumented canal to the periphery of the root (mesial and distal) before and after preparation. Data were analysed using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey test. The p value was set at 0.05. Results Less transportation and better centring ability occurred when PF was used before R25 or RB25 (P<0.0001). There was no significant difference between R25 and RB25 groups. Conclusion Using PF before R25 and RB25 resulted in less root canal transportation and better centring ability. The specific thermo-mechanical treatment of RB25 did not provide better results when compared to R25.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shaping abilities of the XPS (XP-endo Shaper) and PTN (ProTaper Next) systems by using cone-beam computed tomography on apical, middle, and coronal thirds of the pre-created large canals with different apical sizes. METHODS Seventy-two teeth with single canal were divided into 3 groups, and then large root canals were created with apical diameter #30 (Group 1), #35 (Group 2), or #40 (Group 3) by using hand files. Each group was again divided into 2 experimental groups, and root canals were instrumented with either XPS or PTN. Canals were scanned before and after instrumentation by using cone-beam computed tomography scanner to evaluate mesiodistal transportation, buccolingual transportation, centering ratio, percent increased prepared area (PA) (mm2), and percent increased prepared outline (PO) (mm) at 2, 5, and 8 mm from the apex. Data were statistically analyzed, and the significance level was set at P < .05. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences in PA, PO, and centering ratio values between instruments in size 30 and size 35. The mean increases in PA and PO (P < .021) were statistically higher with XPS in size 40. PTN had statistically higher buccolingual transportation in size 30 and size 35. XPS had lower mesiodistal transportation values in all 3 apical sizes. CONCLUSIONS PTN system is able to remove the dentin even in cases of increased apical diameter. However, XPS has less canal transportation and better centering ability compared with PTN.

Abstract
Background Aim of this study is to investigate the cyclic fatigue resistance of the Gold treated WaveOne Gold and the Firewire treated EdgeOne Fire instruments. The null hypotesis was that there were no differences between the lifespan of Gold treated and FireWire treated instruments when subjected to cyclic fatigue tests. Material and Methods 40 new NiTi instruments with a length of 25 mm were tested: 20 Wave One Gold Medium (WOG), tip size 35 and variable taper (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and 20 Edge One Fire (EOF) (EdgeEndo, Albuquerque, New Mexico) tip size 35 and the same variable taper. A mobile support for the electric handpiece and a stainless-steel block containing the artificial canals were used. The same artificial root canal with a 90 degrees angle of curvature and 2 mm radius of curvature was used for all the tested instruments and the WOG counter-clock wise reciprocating motion with an engaging angle of 150° and a disengaging angle of 30° at 300 rpm, was selected for the test. All instruments were inserted at the same length (18mm) and then rotated in the same reciprocating motion until fracture occurred: the time was stopped as soon as the fracture was visible and video-recorded with a 1/100 sec chronometer. Differences among groups were statistically evaluated with an analysis of variance test ANOVA (significance level was set at p<0.05). Results Mean values of time to fracture (TtF) for EOF instruments were 28,00 seconds (SD +/- 2,64) and for WOG instruments were 14,67 seconds (SD +/- 2,41). Statistical analysis found significant differences between the TtF of the two instruments (p<0,05). Conclusions Firewire instruments resulted to be about two times more resistant to cyclic fatigue when compared with identical instruments made with Gold treatment. Abstract
This study aimed to assess the cyclic fatigue resistance of Genius and EdgeFile X1 reciprocating instruments compared with WaveOne Gold Primary. Twenty Genius (Ultradent) 25.04, 20 Genius 30.04, 20 EdgeFile X1 (EdgeEndo) and 20 WaveOne Gold Primary (Dentsply Maillefer) instruments were included in this study and tested in a static cyclic fatigue testing device, which has an artificial stainless steel canal with a 60° angle of curvature and a 5-mm radius of curvature. All instruments were operated in reciprocation mode until fracture occurred. The number of cycles to failure (NCF) was calculated and time to fracture (TF) was recorded in seconds using a digital chronometer. The mean and standard deviations of NCF and TF were calculated for each reciprocating system and the data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and to Dunn's test (p < .05) using SigmaPlot software (Systat software, CA, USA). The fractured surfaces of five instruments from each brand were randomly examined and microphotographed by a low-vacuum environmental scanning electron microscopy - SEM (Tabletop Microscope TM3030, Hitachi, Japan) to confirm the cyclic fatigue fracture. EdgeFile exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, followed by both Genius files (p < .05). Within the limitations of this in vitro study, EdgeFile X1 instruments had significantly higher cyclic fatigue resistance than did Genius and WaveOne Gold Primary instruments. The cyclic fatigue resistance of both Genius files was higher than that of WaveOne Gold Primary.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study compared canal transportation and centering ratio produced after instrumentation with a single heat-treated reciprocating system, WaveOne Gold (WOG; Dentsply Sirona, Tulsa, OK, USA) and a single heat-treated rotary instrument, XP-endo Shaper (XPS; FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) imaging, and evaluated the ability of double-digital radiography (DDR) to detect canal transportation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mesial root canals of mandibular molars with severe curvature (25-70°) were randomly assigned to either WOG or XPS groups for preparation. Centering ratio was measured by micro-CT imaging, while canal transportation was measured by micro-CT and DDR methods at 3, 5, and 7 mm from the apex. Data were statistically compared between groups using the t test (α = 5%). RESULTS The micro-CT method showed that XPS's shaping ability regarding the centering ability (P = 0.030) and canal transportation (P = 0.028) was significantly better than WOG only at the 7-mm level. The DDR technique detected no difference in canal transportation between groups at any level (P > 0.05); however, a significant difference between evaluation methods was detected at the 5-mm level in the WOG group (P = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS Micro-CT technique revealed a significantly better centering ability and less canal transportation with XPS compared to WOG. The DDR technique was not capable of detecting the significant difference between the tested groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Root canal curvatures may lead to procedural errors during endodontic treatment. Thus, differences on the shaping ability of single heat-treated reciprocating and rotary systems should be known.
