Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Patients with dentofacial deformity (DFD) requiring orthognathic treatment have poor aesthetics, jaw function and psychological well-being, which potentially affect the quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the health-related general, oral and orthognathic quality of life, jaw function and sleep-disordered breathing at different stages of orthognathic surgical treatment. METHODS A total of 120 consecutive patients with DFD were recruited and grouped as pre-orthodontic treatment (group 1), pre-surgery (group 2), 4 months post-surgery (group 3), 24 months post-surgery (group 4) and in addition 30 controls without DFD (group 0). Outcomes were assessed using general health Short Form Survey (SF-36), Oral Health Impact (OHIP-14), Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), STOP-Bang and Jaw Function Limitation Scale (JFLS) questionnaires. In addition, presence or absence of pain was recorded. Data were tested with analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis test, Tukey post hoc test and structural equation modelling (SEM). RESULTS Results revealed SF-36 (p = .814) and STOP-Bang (p = .143) total scores did not differ between control and treatment groups. In contrast, OHIP-14, OQLQ and JFLS total scores differed between groups (p = .001). Higher scores were observed in groups 1 (p = .001), 2 (p = .001) and 3 (p = .041) compared to group 0, indicating poor oral health in patients with DFD. Importantly, in group 4, oral health-related quality of life was better, and OHIP-14 (p = .936) and JFLS (p = .572) scores did not differ from controls. OQLQ scores of group 4 were significantly lower than group 1 (p = .001) but higher than group 0 (p = .013). SEM results revealed a significant negative associations of pain with JFLS and OQLQ; OHIP-14 with OQLQ; OHIP-14 with SF-36; and finally STOP-Bang with SF-36. Positive associations were observed between JFLS and OHIP-14; OHIP-14 and OQLQ. CONCLUSION Oral health-related quality of life and jaw function appears to be improved 24 months after orthognathic surgery. Pain and limitation in jaw function had a negative association with health-related quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A child's oral health impacts their development and quality of life. Children who live with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) face barriers to dental care combined with poorer oral health outcomes. However, how this affects their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is largely unknown. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the OHRQoL of children living with FASD. METHODS This cross-sectional survey used the Child Oral Health Impact Profile-Short Form-19 (COHIP-SF-19) to evaluate the OHRQoL quality of life of children (aged 8 to 15) living with FASD, compared to healthy controls. RESULTS A total of 332 children (or their caregivers) completed the survey. The survey results showed that children living with FASD reported significantly more untreated dental conditions. The majority of children in the control group experienced a low impact across the majority of COHIP-SF-19 domains. However, children living with FASD experienced significantly higher impact scores related to oral health, functional well-being, and social-emotional well-being. CONCLUSION The results demonstrated that children who live with FASD have a poorer OHRQoL. Overall, more investigation is necessary to identify the best ways to improve the OHRQoL of children living with FASD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of orthognathic therapy on patients' quality of life. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted including all prospective studies that compared pretherapeutic and posttherapeutic Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) or Overall Quality of Life (OQOL) questionnaire scores. Studies in patients with congenital deformities, clefts, or posttraumatic or cancer-associated deformities were excluded. Overall, 23 prospective studies were included; 8 used OHIP, 9 used OQOL and 6 used both questionnaires. A total of 1039 patients were identified (60.29% women, 39.71% men), with a mean age of 45.17 years. All analyzed studies showed in both OHIP and OQLQ an improvement of the quality of life in patients after orthognathic therapy. While improved scores could be observed in all investigated criteria, the studies demonstrated that social and aesthetic aspects showed the most prominent impact. Comparison of different Angle Classes showed, furthermore, that Class III patients had an even greater advantage over those with a Class II deformity. The review confirms that the quality of life in patients with orthognathic therapy improves significantly in all observed aspects. With regard to Angle Classes, Class III patients showed an even greater improvement than Class II patients.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare factors that influence perception of quality of life (QoL) in patients scheduled for orthognathic surgery. This was a cross-sectional study with 91 participants from two universities in Curitiba. The orthognathic quality of life questionnaire (OQLQ) was used to assess patients' perceptions of their QoL. Sociodemographic data were collected and facial profiles classified into classes I, II, and III. DNA was extracted from oral mucosal cells and markers rs3800373 and rs1360780 for FKBP prolyl isomerase 5 were genotyped. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and chi-squared tests, with a significance level of 5%. There was a negative impact on general perception of QoL in females (p = 0.019) and in the domains of "oral function" (p=0.032) and "awareness of the deformity" (p=0.009). In the dominant model (CC/CT), the presence of at least one C allele for the rs1360780 marker had a negative impact on QoL in the "facial aesthetics" domain (p = 0.037). The negative impact on QoL was greater in females than in males. The perception of QoL was more negative in individuals with rs1360780 polymorphism on the FKBP5 gene and a CC/CT genotype than it was in those with a TT genotype.

Abstract
Orthognathic surgery, essential for addressing jaw and facial skeletal irregularities, has historically relied on traditional surgical planning (TSP) involving a series of time-consuming steps including two-dimensional radiographs. The advent of virtual surgical planning (VSP) and 3D printing technologies has revolutionized this field, bringing unprecedented precision and customization to surgical processes. VSP facilitates 3D visualization of the surgical site, allowing for real-time adjustments and improving preoperative stress for patients by reducing planning time. 3D printing dovetails with VSP, offering the creation of anatomical models and surgical guides, enhancing the predictability of surgical outcomes despite higher initial setup and material costs. The integration of VSP and 3D printing promises innovative and effective solutions in orthognathic surgery, surpassing the limitations of traditional methods. Patient-reported outcomes show a positive post-surgery impact on the quality of life, underlining the significant role of these technologies in enhancing self-esteem and reducing anxiety. Economic analyses depict a promising long-term fiscal advantage with these modern technologies, notwithstanding the higher initial costs. The review emphasizes the need for large-scale randomized controlled trials to address existing research gaps and calls for a deeper exploration into the long-term impacts and ethical considerations of these technologies. In conclusion, while standing on the cusp of a technological renaissance in orthognathic surgery, it is incumbent upon the medical fraternity to foster a collaborative approach, balancing innovation with scrutiny to enhance patient care. The narrative review encourages the leveraging of VSP and 3D printing technologies for more efficient and patient-centric orthognathic surgery, urging the community to navigate uncharted territories in pursuit of precision and efficiency in the surgical landscape.

Abstract
PURPOSE Here we evaluated how orthognathic surgery impacted oral health-related quality of life among patients with dentofacial deformities in the immediate postoperative period and during ≥2 years of follow-up, using the OHIP-14-NL questionnaire. METHODS This prospective study included 86 patients. Quality of life was assessed using the Dutch version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14-NL) preoperatively (T0, baseline), over 7 days postoperatively (T1-T7), and at 4 weeks (T8), 6 months (T9), 1 year (T10), and ≥2 years (T11) postoperatively. Total OHIP score was determined for each patient. Lower OHIP scores indicated higher oral health-related quality of life. Patients also answered questions regarding self-care, discomfort, and experienced pain at all time-points, starting from T1. RESULTS Compared to baseline (T0), median OHIP scores were significantly higher from T1 to T8. However, at T9 to T11, OHIP scores were significantly lower compared to baseline (T0) (p < 0.01). OHIP scores were not correlated with gender, age, or blood loss; and did not significantly differ according to surgery type or surgery indication (p > 0.01). Pain scores were positively correlated with OHIP scores for all time-points, except T6 and T10. Pain was not correlated with sex, age, blood loss, surgery duration, surgery indication, or surgery type. Compared to at T1, pain was significantly decreased at T9-T11. CONCLUSION Among patients who underwent orthognathic surgery, oral health-related quality of life was decreased in the immediate postoperative period, but improved at ≥6 months postoperatively. The improvement was significant 2 years after orthognathic surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Orthognathic surgery is routinely practiced, yet little comparative data exists to evaluate post-orthognathic surgery diet protocols. OBJECTIVE To evaluate which postoperative diet protocols are recommended and to quantify post-orthognathic surgery weight changes in our institutional cohort. METHODS An internet search was carried out on Google for "orthognathic surgery diet" and the postoperative diet recommendations from centers worldwide were quantified. Additionally, a retrospective analysis of patients that underwent orthognathic surgery at our institution was performed, and their preoperative and postoperative weights were recorded. RESULTS The internet search yielded 58 centers that met our inclusion criteria. Most centers were in the United States (n = 37, 63.8%) and were oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS)-led centers (n = 39, 67.2%). Postoperative diets were categorized into 7 distinct protocols, ranging from most to least restrictive-the most popular was liquid diet for 2 to 4 weeks followed by soft diet for 2 to 6 weeks. There were no significant patterns observed across different geographical regions or specialties.In our institution, 135 patients were identified. Overall, there was an average maximum weight loss of 4.1 kg by week 4, followed by a gradual increase in weight. Linear regression analysis showed that patients with greater preoperative body mass index (BMI) lost more weight postoperatively than patients with lower BMI (R2 = 0.25, P < .001). CONCLUSION There is a significant variability in recommended postoperative diets following orthognathic surgery. Following a moderately restrictive diet at our institution, patients returned to their preoperative weight after approximately 4 months.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to develop a new patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to systematically and scientifically evaluate patients' subjective feelings after orthognathic surgery. METHODS A literature review and semi-structured interviews were conducted to construct a conceptual framework and an item pool, followed by expert and patient surveys for measure construction. We conducted a clinical investigation to test the feasibility, reliability, and content validity of this measure. RESULTS The conceptual framework included four domains: psychological health, physiological health, social function, and satisfaction, and 33 items were included in the survey. Following the expert analysis, 31 items remained in the draft. The clinical investigation showed a 100% recovery and completion rate and good reliability, with Cronman-Brown formula coefficients of 0.893 and 0.944, respectively. CONCLUSIONS A new outcome measure to evaluate patients' subjective feelings after orthognathic surgery was successfully developed, and the clinical investigation demonstrated that the PROM had satisfactory feasibility, reliability, and validity. Further studies are possible based on our PROM, and data on a larger scale may reveal more information on patients' subjective feelings about orthognathic surgery. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The novel PROM provides a systematic and scientific way to evaluate the patient's subjective feelings to help surgeons obtain complete patient-reported information after orthognathic surgery. Additionally, standardised multicentre research on patients' subjective feelings using our PROM is possible and could improve the effectiveness of the evaluation and help maintain treatment quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the impact of patients' social anxiety on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the context of orthognathic surgery. METHODS The study involved a cohort of 70 patients who were tasked with completing a comprehensive questionnaire aimed at assessing various facets of their OHRQoL at distinct stages of treatment: pre-surgery, within one month post surgery, and more than one month post surgery. Statistical analyses were conducted in the form of t-test. RESULTS Out of the 70 participants, 27 were male (38.57%) and 43 were female (61.43%). The sample distribution comprised 30 (43%) subjects in the pre-surgical stage, two (3%) at one month post surgery, and 38 (54%) more than one month post surgery. In relation to the t-test results, we found variations in the significance of the results for each question, with multiple results showing patients who reported experiencing discomfort significantly outnumbering those who did not (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Social anxiety and orthognathic surgery both demonstrate significant influences on OHRQoL. Subsequent research should delve into specific areas where patients experience the greatest impact.

Abstract
Objectives The objective was to assess the accuracy of orthognathic surgical planning using three-dimensional virtual planning compared with conventional two-dimensional planning. Material and Methods MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase and Cochrane Library search combined with hand-search of relevant journals was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English through August 2nd, 2022. Primary outcomes included postsurgical accuracy of hard and soft tissue. Secondary outcomes included treatment planning time, intraoperative time, intraoperative blood loss, complications, financial expenses, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Quality and risk-of-bias assessment were evaluated by Cochrane risk of bias tool and GRADE system. Results Seven RCTs characterised by low, high, and unclear risk of bias fulfilled inclusion criteria. Included studies disclosed conflicting results regarding accuracy of hard and soft tissue as well as treatment planning time. The intraoperative time was shortened, and financial expenses were increased with three-dimensional virtual surgical planning (TVSP), while no planning-related complications were revealed. Comparable improvement in PROMs were reported with TVSP and two-dimensional planning. Conclusions Future orthognathic surgical planning will indisputable be performed by three-dimensional virtual planning. The financial expenses, treatment planning time, and intraoperative time will therefore probably decrease due to further development of three-dimensional virtual planning techniques. The hard and soft tissue accuracy between planned position and achieved surgical outcome seems to be improved by three-dimensional virtual planning compared with two-dimensional planning, although results are inconsistent. Further development of three-dimensional virtual planning involving cutting guides and patient-specific osteosynthesis plates are therefore needed to improve the accuracy of orthognathic surgical planning.

Abstract
Although there are multiple variations of accessory foramina described in the literature, to our knowledge there is only 1 report of an isolated mandibular foramen and inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle that courses through the lateral ramus, particularly in those with branchial arch syndromes. Goldenhar syndrome, of the oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum, is a rare congenital condition, which most characteristically presents with hemifacial microsomia. Depending on the severity of hemifacial microsomia, there are predictable treatment modalities to correct the consequent facial asymmetry. We report on a patient with Goldenhar syndrome who was found to have a unique course of the inferior alveolar nerve during orthognathic surgery work-up and treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the impact of orthognathic surgery for dental facial deformities on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the immediate postoperative period up to at least 1 year after surgery. STUDY DESIGN This prospective study evaluated data from 85 patients. OHRQoL was assessed using the Dutch version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14NL) preoperatively (T0), each day for 7 days postoperatively (T1-T7) and 4 weeks (T8), 6 months (T9), and at least 1 year (T10) after surgery. The total OHIP score was calculated for each patient, with higher OHIP scores indicating a worse impact on oral health. Patients also completed an extra questionnaire about self-care, discomfort, and experienced pain (rated on a 10-point scale) in the postoperative period (T1-T10). RESULTS The mean OHIP score increased sharply at T1 compared to T0 but decreased significantly in the first postoperative week. The mean OHIP score at T8 was still higher than before surgery. However, at T9 and T10, the mean OHIP score was significantly lower than at T0 (P < .05). No significant difference in OHIP score was found between gender, age, type of surgery, and indication for surgery. Pain significantly decreased from T6 to T0. The OHIP and pain scores significantly positively correlated at every time point except T9. CONCLUSION The findings indicate that OHRQoL is reduced from baseline in the immediate postoperative period but improves over time. By 1 year, OHRQoL improves significantly after orthognathic surgery in patients with dentofacial deformities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse changes in patients' psychosocial well-being from before treatment until post-surgical orthodontic treatment (including retention) is completed. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data was collected six times: before treatment (T0), 6-8 weeks after the placement of orthodontic appliances (T2), 3-4 weeks before surgery (T3), six weeks after surgery (T4), one year after surgery (T5) and after completing orthodontic treatment (T6; 20-57 months after surgery). At T0, 60 patients participated while at T6, data was available for 15 patients. All patients completed the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Questionnaire (RSES), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQ-II) and the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). All pairwise comparisons between variables were conducted with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS OQLQ function, RSES, AAQ-II and SCL GSI worsened from T0 to T2. At T5, improvements compared to T0 were found in all aspects of OQLQ and SCL GSI. When comparing results at T6 to T0, improvements where only found in OQLQ sum, OQLQ facial aesthetics and OQLQ function. CONCLUSIONS Although well-being of orthognathic patients seems to improve during treatment, many improvements cannot be verified anymore at the completion of the retention period. Most stable changes are found in the oral function component and in the facial aesthetics component of the OQLQ.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of personality traits in addition to quality of life (QoL) on the decision to accept orthognathic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 108 patients (68% female) aged 14-53 years (median, 18 years; interquartile range, 17-25.75 years), with skeletal malocclusions of Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need grades 3-5 (moderate to very great need for surgery) were included in this cross-sectional study. Personality traits of extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, openness, consciousness, perfectionism, and self-esteem and dimensions of Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire were compared between patients who accepted orthodontic preparation for orthognathic surgery and those who refused (n = 55 vs 53). RESULTS Patients who accepted the suggested surgical procedure had higher age, perfectionism, facial esthetic (FE) concern, social aspect, and impairment of oral function (OF) as well as lower self-esteem with small to medium effect sizes (P ≤ .040; r = 0.198-0.399). Other personality traits and awareness of dentofacial deformity did not differ between the groups. In multiple logistic regression analysis, while controlling for sex, perfectionism, and self-esteem, the following predictors of acceptance of orthognathic surgery were higher: FE concern (odds ratio [OR], 3.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-9.1), OF (OR, 3.0; 95% CI, 1.0-8.6), and age ≥18 years (OR, 2.7; 95% CI, 1.0-7.1; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness do not significantly affect a patient's decision to accept orthognathic surgery. The influence of self-esteem and perfectionism is primarily on perception of alteration of QoL induced by dentofacial deformity.

Abstract
Our aim was to assess the impact of combined orthodontic–surgical treatment on patients’ oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) according to type of dentofacial deformities, by synthesizing the available evidence. Methods: Search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases. The eligibility criteria were studies that measured OHRQoL before–after orthognathic surgery, with results disaggregated by Class II and III. Two researchers independently performed the selection process, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment. Meta-analysis of the standard mean differences (SMD) was performed using random effect models. Results: The search identified 1047 references. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria, and four were included in the meta-analysis. The SMD of OHRQL global score showed large improvement 4–7 months after surgery in Class II and III patients (2.09, 95% CI 0.68 to 3.49 and 1.96, 95% CI 1.22 to 2.70, respectively). The sensitivity analyses, excluding studies with weak methodological quality, showed that Class III patients’ improvement in functional limitation was significantly higher than in Class II patients (SMD 0.57, 95% CI 0.12–1.02). Conclusions: There is not enough evidence to support differences between Class II and III patients in the OHRQoL impact after orthognathic surgery, but findings suggest lower improvement of some domains in Class II patients.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate changes in general and oral health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with dentofacial deformity undergoing orthognathic surgery, and whether these changes vary according to type of deformity. Material and methods This is a prospective longitudinal multicenter study of patients with dentofacial deformities (n = 90). The Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and Short-Form Health Survey version2 (SF-36v2) were self-completed by patients before surgery, 3 and 6 months after orthognathic surgery. Change was tested using paired t-test, and compared between Class II and Class III of dentofacial deformity by unpaired t-test. The magnitude of change was examined estimating the standardized response mean (SRM). Results The OQLQ and OHIP-14 showed statistically significant improvements 6 months after surgery, compared with the pre-surgical evaluation, but the SF-36v2 only in the physical component summary. The SRM was large in OQLQ oral function (-1.11) and dentofacial facial aesthetics (-0.76) dimensions, and moderate in most of OHIP-14 dimensions. Differences in mean change between Class II and III were statistically significant for global scores of OQLQ (-10.08 vs -20.30, p = 0.0271) and OHIP-14 (-3.79 vs -10.56, p = 0.0144). Conclusions A significant improvement was observed in oral HRQoL and in the physical component of general health in patients with dentofacial deformities Class II and III after orthognathic surgery. Improvement was greater among Class III than in Class II patients. Clinical relevance These results provide patients, oral health care professionals, and planners with valuable information to make evidence-based decisions and facilitate shared clinical decision-making, taking into account the patients’ perspective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Two-jaw orthognathic surgery (OGS) is done using either the one-splint technique with free-hand positioning of the maxillomandibular complex or the two-splint technique with intermediate splints to position the maxilla. It is uncertain which technique achieves better outcomes. This study compares frontal soft tissue symmetry and subjective patient QoL between one-splint and two-splint techniques in skeletal Class III asymmetry patients undergoing OGS with three-dimensional surgical planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective case-control study comprised 34 one-splint and 46 two-splint OGS patients. Frontal photographs and Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) were done pre- and post-treatment. Frontal soft tissue symmetry was analysed with the anthropometric Facial Symmetry Index. Measurements were compared with t-tests and chi-squared tests with p-value set at 0.05. RESULTS The groups differed in pre-treatment ANB and OQLQ scores. The two-splint group showed significant improvement in all symmetry measures. The one-splint group showed significant improvement in all symmetry measures except midface deviation, upper contour deviation and the Facial Contour Symmetry Index. Both groups showed significant improvement in OQLQ scores. There were no significant differences in post-treatment symmetry measurements and OQLQ scores between groups. CONCLUSIONS Although two-splint technique may better improve contour symmetry, there were no significant differences in frontal soft tissue symmetry and QoL after OGS in skeletal Class III asymmetry with either one-splint or two-splint technique, with both techniques resulting in significant improvement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE One-splint and two-splint surgical techniques produce similar patient-centred outcomes in Class III asymmetry patients.

Abstract
The orthodontic-surgical treatment comprises different stages from diagnosis to final soft tissue accommodation, but there are no data regarding the patient's perception during these phases. This study aimed to investigate the impact of these stages on quality of life and self-esteem of patients with dentofacial deformity. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to the treatment stage: initial orthodontic pre-treatment (1), one week before surgery (2), three months after surgery (3), and after the removal of the orthodontic appliance (4) (n = 20 / group). They filled the following questionnaires: Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Data were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test. Differences among groups were noticed in all evaluated scales (p = 0.001 for all). No statistically significant differences between patients in groups 1 and 2 (OHIP, OQLQ, and RSES, p >0.05 for all), while patients at group 4 presented different scores in all questionnaires compared to 1, 2, and 3 (p < 0.05 for all), irrespective of the type of dentofacial deformity (p > 0.05). The results indicate that dental decompensation stage did not negatively affect patient's confidence and well-being. Despite the improvement noticed few months after the orthognathic surgery, the main impact on patient's quality of life and self-esteem was evidenced after the removal of the orthodontic appliance. We highlight the important role of counselling patients to discuss all the treatment stages to clarify patients' subjective expectations before any intervention is carried out.

Abstract
Background Skeletal mandibular protrusion would influence to the muscle fatigue of the masticatory muscles. Establishing a diagnostic procedures combining physiological and biochemical information is necessary for quantitative evaluation of masticatory muscle fatigue. Objective The transverse relaxation time (T2 time) of muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging (mfMRI), and 31P‐magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were used to investigate the reliability as parameters for measuring the masseter muscle in patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism. Method The subjects were 19 patients diagnosed as skeletal mandibular protrusions and 19 healthy subjects as a control group. Transverse relaxation time (T2 value) determined by mfMRI along with creatine phosphate (PCr) and inorganic phosphorus (Pi) determined by 31P‐MRS before, during, and after clenching were used for molecular imaging of muscle fatigue. Results The average T2 value of the patient group was significantly higher than that of the healthy control group at rest. Furthermore, the average T2 value transiently increased in both groups during experimental clenching. The PCr and Pi showed a tendency toward a transient decrease and increases, respectively. The pH in the masseter muscle showed a transient decrease in both groups prior to and following experimental clenching. The pH in the masseter muscle of the patient group was significantly lower than that in the healthy control group at rest and recovery. Conclusion We showed mfMRI and 31P‐MRS are useful for evaluating masseter fatigue during clenching, and the masseter muscle in the prognathic patients showed more severe fatigue than the healthy controls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of orthognathic surgery on the long-term quality of life of patients with presurgical skeletal Class III and to identify its strongest effect-whether esthetic, social, or functional. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, the subjects were patients after orthognathic surgery for repairing skeletal Class III. Fifty-five patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery from 2013 to 2018 in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department participated in this study. Each participant completed a modified questionnaire used to assess the patient's esthetic, social, and functional abilities after orthognathic surgery. RESULTS The rate of esthetic improvement in orthognathic surgery patients was 88%. More than four-fifths (81.8%) of the patients reported improvement in their personal and social self-esteem and confidence. Finally, 40.7% of the patients reported functional improvement. No significant differences between male and female patients were found. All but one of the patients recommended orthognathic surgery for patients with similar problems. One in six (17.3%) patients was dissatisfied with the nasal appearance after the surgical procedure, while almost a quarter (21.8%) reported worsening of their mouth opening, and 25.4% reported worsening of TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) symptoms. Analysis of the results revealed no statistically significant pattern connecting preoperative overjet or overbite measures with satisfaction rates. CONCLUSIONS In this study, patient satisfaction with the orthognathic surgical procedure was mostly a result of improvements in facial esthetics, followed by psychological well-being and functional abilities. Most dissatisfaction after the orthognathic surgical procedure was related to nasal appearance, mouth opening, and TMJ complaints.

Abstract
Individuals with dentofacial deformities often display a low quality of life (QoL) through biological mechanisms that remain unraveled. In this case–control study, the salivary levels of cytokines, glutamate, and kynurenine metabolites were assessed in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery (OS), while correlating these parameters with QoL and psychological symptoms. Thirty-six patients were enrolled in control (under orthodontic treatment) and test (undergoing OS) groups, matched by age and sex. The QoL was assessed through the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) and the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ). The psychological symptoms were evaluated by the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). The salivary levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, glutamate, and kynurenine metabolites were evaluated. The OQLQ demonstrated increased QoL scores in the test group, regarding social aspects, facial esthetics, and function domains, without significant differences in respect to the other surveys. These patients displayed higher IL-1β and glutamate levels; conversely, the kynurenine metabolites were unaltered. The glutamate levels positively correlated with the OQLQ function scores. The data brings novel evidence about the psychobiological features of patients with dentofacial deformities, showing salivary variations of inflammatory biomarkers in these individuals.

ABSTRACT Orthognathic surgery is a common treatment modality for moderate to severe dentofacial deformities. This study aimed to determine the early postoperative changes in quality of life (QoL) after orthognathic surgery.Twenty patients were evaluated preoperatively (T0), postoperatively after 1 month (T1), and postoperatively after 3 months (T2). Short Form Oral Health Impact Profile and Orthognathic Quality of life Questionnaire were used as generic oral health-related and condition-specific QoL measures.Oral Health Impact Profile -14 and Orthognathic Quality of life Questionnaire scores significantly decreased from T0-T2. Physical pain, psychological disability, social disability, and handicap scores significantly decreased during this interval. Facial esthetic, function, awareness of facial deformity, and social aspects of deformity were also found to significantly improve. No significant difference was found between age groups; female patients had significantly greater preoperative Oral Health Impact Profil-14 scores than did male patients.Orthognathic surgery not only enhances the skeletal and facial relations, but also has significant positive effects on the patients' QoL, oral health, and psychological status.

Abstract
Orthognathic surgery using a surgery-first approach (SFA) has been shown to result in better quality of life (QoL) throughout the treatment duration; however, the effects of gender, age and type of dentofacial deformity on SFA-related QoL remain unknown. In total, 228 consecutive patients underwent SFA for correction of dentofacial deformities (skeletal class III, bimaxillary protrusion and facial asymmetry). We assessed their QoL before surgery and at 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery using the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ). The results indicated a significant decrease in the total OQLQ, facial aesthetics and social aspect domain scores 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery. Among all domains, the greatest improvement was noted in the facial aesthetics domain. The oral function scores declined significantly immediately after surgery, but improved significantly 6 and 12 months after surgery; however, the awareness scores remained relatively stable. At each time point, women and the bimaxillary protrusion group exhibited a significantly higher total and specific domain scores. Patients aged 18-22 years exhibited lower total and four specific domain scores than older patients. Thus, QoL improves in all aspects, except awareness domain, by 12 months after SFA, but gender, age, and type of dentofacial deformity affect this improvement.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the extent to which psychosocial and functional aspects are affected in orthognathic surgery patients. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-CRO14), Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire and Self-Esteem (SE) Scale were used. The sample included 110 Caucasian subjects (73% females) aged 19-54 years. Fifty-five patients with dentofacial deformities were treated by combined orthodontic-orthognathic surgical treatment, and 55 others, matched by sex and age, were untreated controls without dentofacial deformities. In comparison with the untreated subjects, patients before surgery had a poorer quality of life, with the largest effect size in oral function (OF) and OHIP (average differences 8.0 and 14.7, respectively; p < 0.001; r = 0.65 and 0.63), while the lowest effect sizes were in awareness of facial aesthetics (AW) and SE. The treatment induced statistically significant changes in all psychosocial and functional aspects, mainly with a large effect size (p < 0.001; r = 0.48-0.78). The major effect size was a decrease in facial aesthetic concerns (FE; 7.6 ± 6.2; p < 0.001; r = 0.78), followed by a decrease in impairment of OF and OHIP (8.0 ± 7.1 and 16.6 ± 14.6; p < 0.001; r = 0.75). The lowest effect size was in the decrease in AW and increase in SE. After surgery, all aspects were similar to those in the untreated subjects. In conclusion, facial deformity raises many issues, primarily related to aesthetic concerns and functional impairment; however, orthognathic surgery manages to improve quality of life to be similar to that of the population without deformities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate, longitudinally, the impacts of orthognathic surgery in patients with skeletal class II malocclusion on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and psychological symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-three patients with skeletal class II malocclusion who were submitted to orthognathic surgery were evaluated during their preoperative and postoperative periods. They answered the short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and were also diagnosed according to Axes I and II of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). The evolution of OHRQoL and TMD before and after surgery was verified, and the relationships among these variables were found through statistical analysis using Wilcoxon, McNemar, chi-square, and Mann-Whitney tests, with a 5% significance level. RESULTS The median of the overall OHIP-14 score and five domains decreased after orthognathic surgery (p < 0.05), the functional limitation domain increased (p = 0.014), and the physical disability domain did not show an association (p = 0.133). There were improvements in articular pain (p = 0.016), chronic pain (p = 0.019), and nonspecific physical symptoms excluding pain (p = 0.013). In addition, an association was found between poorer OHRQoL (overall scale and domains) and the Axis II variables of the RDC/TMD (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Orthognathic surgery improved perceived OHRQoL, articular pain, and chronic pain. The conditions of Axis II of the RDC/TMD interfered with OHRQoL postoperatively. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Although orthognathic surgery improves QoL and some TMD conditions in skeletal class II patients, poorer postoperative outcomes are observed when psychological conditions are present.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In orthognathic surgery, understanding the patient's motives for treatment is a key factor for postoperative patient satisfaction and treatment success. In countries/systems where orthognathic surgery is funded by public means, patients are referred mainly due to functional problems, although studies of quality of life related changes after treatment indicate that psychosocial and aesthetic reasons might be equal or more important for the patient. There is no available validated condition specific instruments in the Swedish language for quality of life evaluation of patients with dentofacial deformities. Aims/objectives: Cross cultural translation and adaptation of the English-language instrument 'Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire' (OQLQ) into Swedish. Methods: OQLQ was translated into Swedish. A total of 121 patients in four groups were recruited and the Swedish version of the OQLQ (OQLQ-S) was tested by psychometric methods. Reliability was assessed by internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Validity was evaluated by face, convergent and discriminant validity. Results/findings and conclusions: OQLQ-S is reliable and showed good construct validity and internal consistency and can be used in a Swedish speaking population as a complement to clinical variables to evaluate patients with dentofacial deformity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the advantages of virtual surgical planning (VSP) and traditional surgical planning (TSP) to determine whether the current VSP technique is superior to the TSP technique for orthognathic surgery. METHODS An electronic search was carried out in the CENTRAL, PubMed, and Embase databases to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that compared the VSP and TSP techniques regarding their surgical accuracy for hard tissue, prediction precision for soft tissue, required time for planning and surgery, cost and patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS Eight articles from 5 RCTs, involving 199 patients, were identified. The findings showed that the VSP and TSP techniques were similar in surgical accuracy for hard tissue in the sagittal plane, although the VSP technique was significantly more accurate in certain reference areas, especially in the anterior area of the maxilla. Both the VSP and TSP techniques had significantly better surgical accuracy for the maxilla than for the mandible. The VSP technique showed clinically significantly greater precision for soft tissue prediction in the sagittal plane. Patients who were treated via the VSP technique presented a more symmetrical frontal view, regardless of whether hard or soft tissue was involved. The VSP technique required more time for software planning, but it showed an advantage in time savings when considering the entire preoperative process. Accompanied by the use of an accurate computer-aided splint, the VSP technique could effectively reduce the operative time. Apart from the initial financial investment of software and hardware, the total cost of the VSP technique was similar to that of the TSP technique. Patients who were treated via the VSP or TSP technique showed similar improvements in quality-of-life. CONCLUSIONS Currently, the VSP technique has become a good alternative to the TSP technique for orthognathic surgery, especially regarding frontal-esthetic considerations. Studies reporting indicators with good representativeness and sensitivity using an identical comparative method are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis and involvement is commonly seen in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). Therapy includes conservative measures, but also includes intraarticular corticosteroid injections (IASI) and systemic immunosuppressive therapy. Despite aggressive medical therapy, some patients develop arthritic changes and frank TMJ ankylosis that can result in persistent pain and limitation in range of motion (ROM). A surgical option is prosthetic TMJ replacement with concurrent correction of dentofacial deformities, which can be performed simultaneously. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of prosthetic TMJ replacement in a cohort of adolescent females with JIA and severe TMJ involvement. METHODS This is a retrospective case series that took place at one tertiary care center. Patients with a diagnosis of JIA who also underwent alloplastic TMJ replacement were identified through electronic medical record system (EMR) and reviewed. Chart review included analysis of all documents in the EMR, including demographic data, JIA history, surgical complications, ROM of TMJ measured by maximal incisal opening in millimeters (mm) and TMJ pain scores (4-point Likert scale: none, mild, moderate, severe) obtained pre- and postoperatively. RESULTS Five female patients, ages 15-17 year when TMJ replacement was performed, had nine total joints replaced with a post-operative follow-up period of 12-30 months. All patients had polyarticular, seronegative JIA and were treated with IASI and multiple immunosuppressive therapies without resolution of TMJ symptoms. One patient had bilateral TMJ ankylosis. Three of the five patients demonstrated significant dentofacial deformities, and all underwent simultaneous or staged orthognathic surgery. All patients had improvement in TMJ pain with most (80%) reporting no pain, and all had similar or improved ROM of their TMJ postoperatively. There was one delayed postoperative infection with Cutibacterium Acnes that presented 15 months after surgery and required removal and reimplantation of prosthesis. CONCLUSION The sequelae of TMJ arthritis and involvement from JIA in the adolescent population can be difficult to treat. Current medical therapy can be successful, however, in select cases that develop chronic changes in the TMJ despite extensive medical therapy, early results show that prosthetic joint replacement maybe a reasonable surgical option. With prosthetic joint replacement pain levels were reduced and range of motion was maintained or improved for all patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to describe the development of a Chinese version of the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) and examine its reliability and validity. METHODS The original English version of the OQLQ was translated into Chinese (OQLQ-C) by a forward-backward translation method. Psychometric evaluation of the OQLQ-C was carried out on a sample of 126 patients with dentofacial deformities. Reliability of the OQLQ-C was determined by means of internal consistency and test-retest methods, while validity was ascertained by content validity and construct validity. RESULTS Internal consistency for total OQLQ-C score was 0.932 (Cronbach's alpha), and the test-retest reliability was 0.913 (Spearman correlation coefficient). Content validity of OQLQ-C was supported by content validity index (CVI) with scale-level (S-CVI) of 0.99 and item-level (I-CVI) of 0.875 to 1. The OQLQ-C was distributed to 4 different factors, and the total variance explained was 67.049%. CONCLUSIONS The Chinese version of the OQLQ demonstrated acceptable reliability and good validity in patients with dentofacial deformities. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These findings enable assessments of oral health-related quality of life in Chinese literate patients with dentofacial disorders. TRIAL REGISTRATION ChiCTR1900028206.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the costs and benefits of surgery-first (SF) and orthodontics-first (OF) approaches in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion. This retrospective study recruited 54 patients who received combined orthognathic-orthodontic treatment via SF or OF approach. Data collected included orthodontic time, operating time, hospital stay, and detailed expenditures. Effectiveness was defined as quality of life, assessed by Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ-22) before and 1 year after treatment. Cost-effectiveness was measured by incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and incremental time-effectiveness ratio (ITER). The duration of SF was shorter than that of OF, due to a reduced orthodontic time (P=0.003). The operating time was longer with SF than with OF (P=0.015). There was no significant difference in hospital stay (P=0.868), cost of hospitalization (P=0.924) or orthodontics (P=0.171), or OQLQ score (P=0.41) between the two approaches. Cost-effectiveness analyses revealed a reduction in cost of US$ 6.43/OQLQ point and reduction in time of 8.60 months/OQLQ point gained by SF versus OF. The study findings revealed that the total treatment time was significantly shorter with SF than with OF, although the two approaches did not differ significantly in terms of total cost (P=0.979). Further studies on the cost-effectiveness of the two approaches in different healthcare systems across diverse countries are warranted.

Abstract
Background This study was performed to develop and validate a Japanese version of Child Oral Health Impact Profile-Short Form (COHIP-SF) 19 and to assess its psychometric properties in Japanese school-age children. Methods The original English COHIP-SF 19 was translated into Japanese (COHIP-SF 19 JP) using a standard forward and backward translation procedure. The psychometric properties of the COHIP-SF 19 JP were assessed in 379 public school students between 7 and 18 years of age in Fukuoka, Japan. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC) were the metrics used for evaluation of this questionnaire. The discriminant validly was examined using the Wilcoxon rank sum test to identify significant differences in COHIP-SF 19 JP scores according to the results of dental examinations. The convergent validity was examined using the Spearman correlations to determine the relationships between COHIP-SF 19 JP scores and the self-perceived oral health ratings. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed to verify the factor structure of the questionnaire. Results The COHIP-SF 19 JP revealed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha, 0.77) and test-retest reliability (ICC, 0.81). Discriminant validity indicated that children with dental caries or malocclusion had significantly lower COHIP-SF 19 JP scores (P < 0.05); convergent validity indicated that the self-perceived oral health rating was significantly correlated with the COHIP-SF 19 JP total score and subscores (rs = 0.352–0.567, P < 0.0001), indicating that the questionnaire had a sufficient construct validity. CFA suggested that the modified four-factor model had better model fit indices than the original three-factor model. Conclusion The collected data showed that the COHIP-SF 19 JP possesses sufficient psychometric properties for use in Japanese school-age children.

Abstract
Esthetics in the oro-facial region are important for perceived oral health and a common reason for treatment of discoloured, missing or crowded teeth. As one of the fundamental bricks of a patient's oral health, changes in the domain of oro-facial esthetics resides within the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of an individual. Four main dimensions, oral function, oro-facial pain, oro-facial appearance and psychosocial impact, are suggested to cover the concept of OHRQoL. The aim of this systematic review was to map the impact from oral conditions with principal impact on the oro-facial appearance dimension of OHRQoL (PROSPERO: CRD42017064033). Publications were included if they reported Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) mean or median domain scores for patients with esthetic treatment need relating to tooth wear, orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, frontal tooth loss or tooth whitening. A search in PubMed (Medline), EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL and PsycINFO 8 June 2017 and updated 14 January 2019, identified 2,104 abstracts. After screening of abstracts, 1607 articles were reviewed in full text and 33 articles included. These 33 articles reported OHIP-data for 9409 patients grouped in 63 patient populations. Median oro-facial appearance impact scores on a standardised 0-8 scale, for populations with treatment need relating to tooth wear, orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, frontal tooth loss and tooth whitening, ranged from 0.13 for tooth wear to 3.04 for tooth whitening populations. In conclusion, a moderate impact for the oro-facial appearance dimension of OHRQoL was found in patients with different conditions with esthetically related treatment need.

Abstract
Summary
Background
Orthognathic surgery involves a change in the patient’s functional and aesthetic aspects.
Objective
The objective was to answer the following focused question: what is the impact on quality of life (QoL; aesthetic, function, social, and psychological aspects) in patients undergoing orthodontic-surgical treatment?
Search methods
Appropriate word combinations and truncations were selected and tailored specifically for each electronic database: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature and gray literature.
Selection criteria
Studies that met the following criteria was included: patients with dentofacial deformity (P); surgical correction through orthodontic-surgical treatment (E/I); before orthodontic-surgical treatment or patients with no dentofacial deformity (C); QoL (O); cross-sectional, cohort, case-control and randomized or non-randomized clinical trial (S).
Data collection and analysis
In phase 1, two reviewers independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of all references. All articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded. In phase 2, the same reviewers completely read the selected articles independently.
Results
A total of 2879 articles were retrieved during the final database search. Fifty-two articles were selected for full reading, of which 16 were excluded, resulting in 36 included articles. The meta-analysis was performed using 13 of the selected studies. When comparing the period before any treatment with the post-operative period of 4–8 weeks, there was an association only for facial aesthetics (mean difference = 3.00; 95 per cent confidence interval = 1.10–4.89; inconsistency index = 63 per cent). The comparison between the period before any treatment with the 6 month post-operative period showed an improved QoL in all of the domains evaluated and, when comparing data after the orthodontic-surgical preparation (before surgery) and after 5–12 months of surgery, there was also statistical significance with an increased QoL for all of the domains evaluated.
Conclusions
In conclusion, based on the results of this systematic review and meta-analysis, the evidence suggests an improvement in the QoL of patients undergoing orthodontic-surgical treatment regarding aesthetic, functional, social, and psychological aspects.

Abstract
Background The quality of life in Class III malocclusion patients are worse than those without the disorder and previous studies have shown that surgical orthodontic treatment has a different effect on these patients compared with mild or moderate malocclusion. This study aimed to investigate the changes in quality of life in patients with Class III malocclusion during surgical orthodontic treatment in Chinese young adults. Methods The 14-item Short Form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and the 22-item Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) were used to assess the effect of surgical orthodontic treatment on the quality of life in 21 patients with Class III malocclusion at pre-treatment (T0), pre-surgical orthodontic treatment (6 to 8 months, T1) and post-surgical orthodontic treatment (6 to 8 months after surgery, T2), and 24 healthy individuals were included as controls. The comparisons in numerical variables between patients and controls were performed using Mann-Whitney U test. The scores of the two questionnaires between T0, T1, T2 and controls (Tc) were compared using generalized estimating equation. Results According to OHIP-14 questionnaire, the mean scores in T0 and T1 were higher than those in T2 and Tc (P < 0.001), and a significant decrease was observed after post-surgical orthodontic treatment (P < 0.001), which achieved a level similar to the control group (P > 0.05). As to OQLQ questionnaire, the mean scores of all domains showed a significant increase between T0 and T1 except for awareness of dentofacial aesthetics (P > 0.05) and social aspects of dentofacial deformity (P > 0.05), followed by a significant decrease between T1 and T2. Conclusion Surgical orthodontic treatment may improve quality of life in patients with Class III malocclusion, but pre-surgical orthodontic treatment may have an adverse effect on quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dentofacial deformities have an impact on quality of life (QOL). Many factors can influence this perception, including genetic aspects. ANKK1 and DRD2 genes are associated with dopaminergic system and could modulate behavioral dysfunction. PURPOSE The impact of orthognathic surgery and associated factors on QOL of adults was evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS The abbreviated World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) was applied to patients from two surgery services one week before (T0) and six months after surgery (T1). The independent variables were age, sex, race, facial pattern, presence of jaw asymmetry and vertical deformities, and polymorphisms associated with ANKK1 and DRD2 genes. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS There was improvement in the perception of QOL from T0 to T1 in the general score, in the physical and psychological domains, and in the quality of life and general health perception (QOLGHP) (p < 0.001). In this interval, individuals aged ≥30 years reported positive impacts on all outcomes (p < 0.05), whereas in women this improvement did not occur only for the physical domain (p = 0.136). There was an association between the polymorphisms associated with the ANKK1 gene (rs1800497) and the perception of QOL in the social relationship's domain (p = 0.021) and QOLGHP (p = 0.042). The other clinical conditions were not associated with outcomes (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Perception of QOL of patients improved following orthognathic surgery in physical, psychological, and QOLGHP domains. Aged ≥30 years, being women and polymorphisms associated with the ANKK1 gene were related to positive impacts.

Abstract
The present study aimed to determine what kind of face and which area of the face (eyes or mouth) rapidly capture attention among patients with dentomaxillofacial deformities (DDs). In the present experiments, faces were categorized as highly or lowly attractive (HA and LA, respectively) and as a face with dentomaxillofacial deformities (DD face). A dot-probe task and a change-detection task were utilized to examine the attentional bias to the faces and facial features, respectively. In Study 1, we found that DD patients showed an attentional bias to DD male faces compared with HA male faces, while controls showed an opposite attentional pattern. In Study 2, we found that patients responded faster to the changes in the mouths of DD male faces than those of HA and LA faces. Moreover, patients paid less attention to the mouths of HA faces than to the region of the eyes, and they paid less attention than did the controls. These results indicated that DD patients selectively directed their attention to DD male faces and the mouths of these faces. These findings were not evident in female faces. Furthermore, patients showed avoidance of the mouths of HA faces regardless of the gender of the faces.
