The Effects of Inhalation Aromatherapy Using Lavender Essential Oil on Postoperative Pain of Inguinal Hernia: A Randomized Controlled Trial

The effect of lavender foot baths on postoperative pain and sleep quality in comparison with foot baths with warm water only-A prospective randomized controlled study

INTRODUCTION

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of warm water (WW) foot bath with or without lavender oil for pain and sleep quality in the patients who undergone abdominal surgeries.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

This study was designed as a prospective randomized controlled. The three study groups were defined as the control group (n = 44), the WW foot bath group (n = 46), WW foot bath with the lavender group (n = 40). Foot baths were done for 20 min with 40 °C every night for 3 days after surgery. Visual Analogue Scale and Richard-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire were used during data collection.

RESULTS

A total of 130 patients, mean age 55.99 ±  ± 13.05 years, 66 male (51 %), 103 of whom underwent abdominal surgery, were included in the study. When the patients during the postoperative three days were evaluated, decreased pain score and increased sleep quality both the WW and WW foot bath with lavender groups (p < 0.001). Noise-related sleep quality was detected to be lesser in the control group patients on the 3rd day (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

WW foot bath with or without lavender oil is an uncomplicated, economical, and effective complementary therapy to reduce postoperative pain and improve sleep quality. WW foot baths with essential oils are optionally available in clinics and can be used according to patients' preferences.

The Use of Lavender Aromatherapy for Pain After Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Trial

A randomized clinical trial was conducted over a threemonth period with 102 participants undergoing a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study purpose was to assess whether there was a reduction in the use of opioids in the postoperative period for THA or TKA participants that utilized lavender aromatherapy as an adjunct to pain medication. The participants in the control and intervention group were administered nonopioid pain medication around the clock and opioids as needed after surgery. However, the intervention group also received a pre-packaged lavender essential oil inhaler. Total oral morphine equivalents (OME) were calculated for each participant to determine opioid usage. Although the total OME was similar for the groups overall, the total OME was slightly lower for THA patients that were enrolled in the intervention group (median 22.5) compared to THA patients that were enrolled in the control group (median 31.2). In the intervention group, 58% of participants reported that the lavender inhaler was a useful tool for pain management and 76% indicated they would continue to use the lavender inhaler after discharge.

Use of Lavandula angustifolia essential oil as a complementary therapy in adult health care: A scoping review

Background

In addition to its low toxicity risk, Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil is recognised worldwide for its sedative, antidepressant, antiseptic, antifungal, relaxing, and antiemetic properties. Thus, the action mechanism of lavender oil has attracted significant attention from researchers interested in improving the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of patients.

Objective

To investigate the scope of knowledge regarding the use of L. angustifolia essential oil as a complementary therapy in adult health care.

Methods

A scoping review was carried out using a PRISMA-ScR checklist followed by a critical assessment being performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute level of evidence. The following databases were used: SCOPUS, MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, SCIELO, Cochrane Library, LILACS, Wiley Online Library, CAPES, and FIOCRUZ Dissertations.

Results

Eighty-three articles published between 2002 and 2022 were selected for the analysis; More articles came from Iran than from any other country and most articles reported clinical trials. The applicability of lavender essential oil and its route of administration in different clinical situations were the main topics addressed in the articles.

Conclusions

Most studies demonstrate the efficacy of L. angustifolia Mill. essential oil in relieving pain and decreasing anxiety. Few studies evaluated the anti-psoriatic, anti-toxoplasmotic, and wound healing properties and the protective actions against cerebral ischemia. One study reported on its safety, specifically the allergenic potential of linalool, the main chemical component of L. angustifolia essential oil. However, most studies did not involve the extensive investigations on this topic or report the safe quantities of this oil for human treatment, meaning further research into the safety of this treatment is required.

A comprehensive review on clinically proven natural products in the management of nerve pain, with mechanistic insights

Introduction

People are treating their neuropathic pain with several approved and licensed pharmacological drugs. But due to having existing limitations like low efficacy with some side effects, there needs to be a more effective alternative and complementary therapeutic options.

Purpose

s: The study was designed to discuss the mechanistic role of several clinically proven natural products that have been shown to play a significant role against different nerve pain or neuropathic pain.

Method

ology: Information for this review article was salvaged using several accessible searching databases like SciVerse Scopus ® (Elsevier Properties S. A, USA), Web of Science® (Thomson Reuters, USA), and PubMed® (U.S. National Library of Medicine, USA) considering some search items like - nerve pain, natural products in pain/nerve pain management, clinically proven natural products in pain management, pain-reducing agents and so on.

Result

Our study reported the therapeutic efficacy of natural products and their possible mechanism against neuropathic pain in the human body. Natural products widely used to treat neuropathic pain include comfrey root extract ointment, lavender oil, Rose Oil, aromatic essential oil, ginger oil, vitex agnus-castus, peganum oil, and ajwain 10%. Some common pathways are involved in pain relief through sensory stimulation, enzymatic, anti-inflammatory, and pain-related receptor regulation.

Conclusion

The present study suggests that the mentioned natural products can be an appropriate choice for the treatment and management of neuropathic pain.

THE EFFECT OF LAVENDER AROMATHERAPY ON THE LEVEL OF INTRAOPERATIVE ANXIETY IN CAESAREAN CASE UNDER SPINAL ANESTHESIA: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

BACKGROUND

Preoperative anxiety can be reduced by aromatherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of lavender aromatherapy in reducing intraoperative anxiety in patients undergoing caesarean section (CS) under spinal anesthesia.

METHODS

This study was two-armed and randomized controlled trial. A total of 96 patients who were scheduled for CS were randomly divided into two groups: the aromatherapy (A) group (n=48), comprising patients who were randomized to receive lavender aromatherapy with mask oxygen after the birth of the baby, and the control (C) group (n=48), comprising patients who inhaled carrier oil. During the preoperative period, baseline anxiety levels and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores were recorded using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-I) scale. After birth, two drops of oil were inhaled in an oxygen mask for 5 min. After 5 min, the Ramsey Sedation Scale was evaluated, and patients with a score of 1 received 2 mg of intravenous midazolam for sedation. The STAI-I and VAS pain scores were re-evaluated at the third postoperative hour.

RESULTS

The primary outcome was the significant reduction in the need for midazolam brought about by lavender aromatherapy, and the secondary outcomes included postoperative third-hour STAI-I scores, intraoperative complications and patient satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

The effectiveness of lavender aromatherapy, which reduced the need for intraoperative anxiolytics, can be offered as an alternative for pregnant women who undergo CS under spinal anesthesia.

The effects of lavandula aromatherapy on pain relief after coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a primary treatment in coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients experience pain after CABG. Pain may increase postoperative complications and decrease quality of life (QoL). This study aims to determine the lavandula aromatherapy effect on patients' pain after CABG.

METHODS

98 patients undergoing CABG were randomly assigned to intervention and placebo groups. The intervention group inhaled 5-drops of 20 % lavandula essential oil (LEO) and the placebo group was exposed to 5-drop of distilled water. LEO or distilled water were dropped into a sterile gauze converted to the form of a necklace. The subjects wore necklace for three consecutive days and intervention was performed each 24 h. The pain intensity, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured before each intervention and 30 min after it. Also, the mean analgesic intake was recorded. SPSS version 16 was used to analyze the data.

RESULTS

The mean pain score measured in the intervention group showed a more decrease than that obtained in the placebo group after the first and second interventions. Additionally, the mean pain score in the intervention group demonstrated a significant decrease than the placebo group after the second intervention (P=0.008). Moreover, mean SBP after the second intervention (P=0.046) and mean DBP after the first intervention (P=0.029) revealed a significant difference between two groups. Moreover, the intervention group received less analgesic than the placebo group.

CONCLUSIONS

Lavandula aromatherapy can reduce pain and received analgesic dose after CABG.

The effect of video training and intraoperative progress report on the anxiety of family caregivers waiting for relatives undergoing surgery

Purpose

This study aimed to examine the effect of video training and intraoperative progress report on the anxiety of family caregivers awaiting relatives undergoing surgery.

Methods

A three-armed randomized controlled design was used. One hundred and two participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to three groups: the video training group (n = 34), the intraoperative progress report group (n = 34), and the control group (n = 34). Interventions were performed when the relatives of the participants were undergoing surgery. The participants in the video training group received video training containing images of the operating room environment and animations related to the patient’s surgical procedure, postoperative care, and possible complications from the surgery. In the intraoperative progress report group, information regarding the patient’s general condition, the percentage of surgical progress, and the approximate time of the patient’s transfer from the operating room were provided. The control group received routine care. A demographic data questionnaire and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used for data collection.

Results

It was found a statistically significant decrease in the state anxiety in the video training (p < 0.001) and intraoperative progress report (p < 0.001) group after the intervention when compared to before the intervention. It was found no significant difference among the study groups in terms of the level of state and trait anxiety after the intervention (p > 0.05).

Conclusions

This study found that both video training and intraoperative progress report are effective in reducing the state anxiety of family caregivers awaiting relatives undergoing surgery.

Salvia officinalis L. Essential Oil: Characterization, Antioxidant Properties, and the Effects of Aromatherapy in Adult Patients

The purpose of this study is to reveal the chemical and biochemical characteristics and the potential aromatherapy applications of the essential oil (EO) of Salvia officinalis (common sage) within a hospital environment. The chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Three types of sage EOs were included in this study: two commercial oils and one oil obtained by in-house hydrodistillation. Based on the findings, these EOs were included in different chemotypes. The first two samples were similar to the most common chemotype (α-thujone > camphor > 1,8-cineole > β-thujone), while the in-house sage EO revealed a high content of 1,8-cineole, borneol, α-thujone, similar to the Dalmatian type. The latter sample was selected to be evaluated for its antioxidant and medical effects, as borneol, a bicyclic monoterpene, is known as a substance with anesthetic and analgesic effects in traditional Asian medicine. The study suggests that the antioxidant capacity of the sage EO is modest (33.61% and 84.50% inhibition was determined by DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively), but also that the inhalation of sage EO with high borneol content by hospitalized patients could improve these patients’ satisfaction.

The effects of Lavender and Chamomile essential oil inhalation aromatherapy on depression, anxiety and stress in older community-dwelling people: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Considering the prevalence of mental health problems in older adults, this study aims to investigate the effect of inhalation aromatherapy using lavender and chamomile essential oils on depression, anxiety, and stress of community-dwelling older people.

METHODS

A three-armed, parallel, randomized, and controlled trial design was used in this study. 183 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to three groups (n = 61): the lavender, chamomile, and control groups. The participants in the experimental groups inhaled three drops of 1.5% lavender and chamomile essential oils for 30 nights. The participants in the control group inhaled only distilled water in a similar fashion. Data were collected using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress-Scale (DASS) at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and one month after the intervention. Chi-square, Fisher's exact, one-way ANOVA, and repeated measures ANOVA were used for data analysis.

RESULTS

Statistically significant improvement occurred in depression, anxiety, and stress levels immediately and one month after the intervention in lavender and chamomile groups compared to the control group (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Inhalation aromatherapy with both lavender and chamomile essential oils helped decrease depression, anxiety, and stress levels in community-dwelling older adults.
