Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine the effect of virtual reality, music therapy, and stress ball applications, which are methods of distraction, on pain, anxiety, and patient satisfaction during outpatient gynecological procedures. DESIGN This study was a randomized controlled trial with control and intervention groups, pre-test and post-test. METHODS The study was conducted with 200 women who underwent gynecological surgical procedures without sedation in a state hospital on the European side of Istanbul between October 2022 and March 2023. There were four groups in the study: Virtual Reality (n = 50), Music Therapy (n = 50), Stress Ball (n = 50), and Control group (n = 50). Data were collected using a Descriptive Information Form, Visual Analog Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Life Information Follow-up Form, and Patient Satisfaction Evaluation Form. The scales were completed separately by the investigator before the procedure, 10 minutes after the procedure, and 1 hour after the procedure. FINDINGS A statistically significant difference between the intervention groups and control groups of women who underwent a gynecological procedure at the 10th minute after the procedure (P=.000) and at the 1st hour after the procedure (P=.000) was significant. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory of women by groups decreased after the procedure and showed a statistically significant difference (P =.000). Satisfaction scores of the women with the intervention according to the groups also showed a significant difference (P =.000). When the satisfaction scores of the women with the intervention were compared by groups, the satisfaction scores ranged from the highest to the lowest, as virtual reality, music therapy, and stress ball application, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Virtual reality, music therapy, and stress ball applications, which are methods of distraction during the outpatient gynecological procedure, were effective in reducing anxiety and pain and increasing patient satisfaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emergence delirium is a common complication in children. Recorded mother's voice, as a non-pharmacological measure, is increasingly used to prevent the emergence of delirium in pediatric patients, but sufficient evidence is still needed to prove its efficacy. METHODS Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Sinomed databases were searched for randomized controlled trials exploring the efficacy of recorded mother's voice in preventing the emergence of delirium in pediatric patients undergoing general anesthesia. The original data were pooled for the meta-analysis with Review Manager 5.4.1. This study was conducted based on the Cochrane Review Methods. RESULTS Eight studies with 724 children were included in the analysis. Recorded mother's voice reduced the incidence of emergence delirium when compared with either no voice (RR: 0.45; [95 % CI, 0.34 - 0.61]; p < 0.01; I2 = 7 %) or stranger's voice (RR: 0.51; [95 % CI, 0.28 - 0.91]; p = 0.02; I2 = 38 %) without increasing other untoward reactions. In addition, it shortened the post-anesthesia care unit stay time when compared with no voice (MD = -5.64; [95 % CI, -8.43 to -2.58]; p < 0.01, I2 = 0 %), but not stranger's voice (MD = -1.23; [95 % CI, -3.08 to 0.63]; p = 0.19, I2 = 0 %). It also shortened the extubation time and reduced the incidence of postoperative rescue analgesia. CONCLUSION The current analysis indicated that recorded mother's voices could reduce the incidence of emergency delirium, shorten post-anesthesia care unit stay time and extubation time, and decrease the incidence of postoperative rescue analgesia in children.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at investigating the risk factors for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in pediatric patients undergoing appendectomy. DESIGN This is a prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study. METHODS The study involved 163 children aged 5 to 18 years who underwent appendectomy in the pediatric surgery clinic of a tertiary hospital between December 2022 and June 2023. The study data were collected through the patient information form, Baxter Retching Faces scale, and Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale, which included questions about the descriptive and clinical characteristics of the participants and was prepared by the researcher consistent with the literature. FINDINGS A significant relationship was observed between the severity of postoperative pain and the occurrence of PONV in patients with both nonperforated and perforated appendicitis (P < .001). In addition, operative time and the time to the first oral feeding were shorter in patients with nonperforated appendicitis in the non-PONV group (P = .005 and P = .042, respectively) Logistic regression analysis revealed that postoperative pain, family history of PONV and appendix perforation were risk factors for PONV in children with both nonperforated and perforated appendicitis (P < .001, P = .040, and P < .001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In children undergoing appendectomy, family history of PONV, severity of postoperative pain, increased operative time, and increased transition time to oral feeding are risk factors for PONV. Pediatric nurses, who have an important role in the management of PONV, should evaluate patients in terms of PONV risk in the preoperative period within the scope of evidence-based practices and perform pharmacological or nonpharmacological interventions according to the degree of risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify non-pharmacological pain relief therapies in children undergoing surgery. DESIGN AND DATA SOURCES Using keywords extracted from Medical Subject Headings and "Descriptores en Ciencias de la Salud" we searched for articles in the Web of Science, Scopus, Cuiden, PubMed, and CINHAL databases from the last five years, and performed a reverse search. We assessed the documentary quality of the articles using various standardized instruments. RESULTS The final review included eleven studies. In terms of cognitive-behavioral techniques, there is evidence that both music and video therapy are effective in reducing postoperative pain in children in seven studies, and therapeutic play in five studies. Other methods used less frequently but found to be effective included laughter therapy in one study and deep breathing in another. Regarding physical methods of pain relief, massage was found to be an effective non-pharmacological therapy for reducing pediatric postoperative pain in two studies and ineffective in another. CONCLUSIONS In this study, we highlight the importance of non-pharmacological therapies in pediatric postoperative pain management. Cognitive-behavioral techniques, especially music therapy, video therapy, and therapeutic play, reduce pediatric postoperative pain. They are therefore effective therapies that nurses can use in this area. Further research into the effectiveness of storytelling is necessary, as the evidence is not entirely conclusive. More evidence is also needed on physical methods of pain relief, particularly massage.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of listening to music and foot reflexology during the perioperative period on nausea, pain and anxiety in children aged 7-12 years. MATERIAL AND METHOD The sample for the randomized controlled experimental study included children who underwent outpatient surgery in the Pediatric Surgery Clinic. Research data were collected. A total of 99 children were included in the study with 33 in the music group, 33 in the foot reflexology group, and 33 in the control group. RESULTS In the preoperative and postoperative periods, Children's Perioperative Multidimensional Anxiety Scale (CPMAS) scores for the music listening and reflexology groups were significantly lower than the control group (p < 0.05). In the postoperative period, the Children's Emotional Manifestation Scale (CEMS) scores for the reflexology and music listening groups after the application were significantly lower than the control group (p < 0.001). Postoperative Baxter Retching Faces (BARF) scores were found to be significantly lower in children who listened to music compared to the control group (p = 0.002). The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Pain Scale (CHEOPS) scores for children in the control group were found to be significantly higher in the postoperative period than for children in the music and reflexology groups (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS As a result, listening to music and reflexology during the perioperative period were effective in reducing anxiety, pain and nausea in children. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS In the perioperative period, listening to music and reflexology for children can be recommended as non-pharmacological nursing interventions with low cost and easy implementation.

Abstract
Aim of this study was to develop a patient satisfaction scale for needs and expectations of pediatric surgery patients and to propose a new measurement tool in this field. Population of study consisted of all patients between May 2018 and February 2020 at a pediatric surgery service of a university hospital in Turkey. A pool of 70 items was prepared for scale. Two items were removed in line with expert opinions and suggestions. As a result of content validity and test application, 36 items were removed, and scale was revised. Data were transferred to SPSS Statistics 23 and AMOS 22 program. After evaluating scope validity of scale, Content Validity, Structural Validity, Exploratory Factor Analysis, and finally Reliability Analysis were examined. As a result of the analyses, 32 items with eight sub-dimensions were obtained from scale. Eight-factor scale explained 60.42% of total variance. Cronbach Alpha internal consistency of scale was found to be 0.88. Item factor loads of scale were created and the reliability of scale were obtained at desired level. The scale is suitable for patients aged 6 to 18 years old.

Abstract
Background: For children with congenital lung malformations (CLMs), there is insufficient evidence of the efficacy of direct visual paravertebral block (PVB). We aimed to evaluate its effectiveness and safety by comparing it with local anesthetic infiltration (LAI). Materials and Methods: This was a nonrandomized control study of CLMs in children younger than 3 years of age who underwent thoracoscopic surgery in our hospital from January to December 2020. The children were divided into group A (PVB analgesia group) and group B (LAI group). The primary outcome was the incidence of rebound pain within 72 hours. Secondary outcomes included the Face, Legs, Activity, Crying, Consolability (FLACC) pain scores at 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 hours, side effects, adverse events, the number of rebound pains, and the postoperative family observation scores. Results: The incidence of rebound pain was 10% in group A and 60.5% in group B within 72 hours (P < .001). The PVB was associated with decreased FLACC pain scores at 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 hours, family observation scores, and the number of rebound pains (P < .001, P = .01, P = .028, P = .005, P = .006, P = .026, and P < .001, respectively). Group B was also associated with a higher rate of side effects and adverse events. There was no difference in the length of hospital stay. Conclusion: The PVB under direct vision analgesia technique is effective and safe for postoperative pain control in pediatric patients with CLMs. It may be an attractive alternative to LAI for pediatric thoracoscopic surgical procedures.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of laparoscopic-assisted radical resection of type I choledochal cyst (CC) guided by the principles of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). Methods A retrospective cohort study of type I CC admitted to our hospital between May 2020 and December 2021 were analyzed, a total of 41 patients with choledochal cyst underwent surgery during this period and 30 cases were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients (n = 15) who received the traditional treatment from May 2020 to March 2021 were included in the traditional group. Patients (n = 15) who received ERAS from April 2021 to December 2021 were included in the ERAS group. Both groups underwent surgery performed by the same surgical team. Preoperative data of the two groups were recorded, and relevant data were statistically analyzed and compared. Results There was a statistically significant difference in the dose of opioids. Significant differences were observed between the ERAS and traditional groups in the results of the FLACC pain assessment scale on the 1st and 2nd day after surgery, time of gastric tube, urinary catheter and abdominal drainage tube removal, time of first defecation after operation, time of first eating after operation, time to reach full food intake, results of CRP, ALB, and ALT on the 3rd and 7th postoperative day, postoperative hospital stay, and total treatment cost. No significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of gender, age, body weight, cyst size, preoperative CRP, ALB, ALT, intraoperative blood loss, operation time, and the number of cases converted to laparotomy. Neither the FLACC pain assessment scale on the 3rd day after surgery, the incidence of postoperative complications, nor the rate of readmission within 30 days showed significant differences. Conclusions Laparoscopic-assisted radical resection of type I CC guided by the principles of ERAS is safe and effective for children. The ERAS concept demonstrated advantages over traditional laparoscopic surgery, including reduced opioid use, shorter time to first postoperative defecation, earlier resumption of postoperative feeding, shorter time to reach full feeding, shorter postoperative hospital stay, and lower total treatment cost.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the positive effect of non-pharmacological methods such as listening to music in reducing the level of anxiety of hospitalized patients has been reported. This study aimed to determine the effect of non-verbal music on anxiety in hospitalized children. METHODS In this study, 52 hospitalized children aged 6 to 12 years were randomly divided into Test and control groups. Research data collection tools included the Spielberger questionnaire to assess the level of anxiety in children. Statistical analysis of data was performed using Chi-square and t-tests by SPSS 23 software. RESULTS Daily listening to non-verbal music for 20 minutes after the second and third days significantly reduced the anxiety score and the number of breaths per minute of hospitalized children (P ≤ 0.01). The trend of changes in anxiety score was measured for three consecutive days and vital signs except body temperature decreased significantly in the test group (P ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, listening to non-verbal music by hospitalized children can be used as an effective practical method to reduce the level of anxiety and subsequently reduce vital signs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Control of pain, fear, and anxiety of children during dental procedures is a major challenge in pediatrics. This study aimed to compare the effect of audio distraction by music and audio-story on pain and anxiety of children during dental treatment. METHODS This randomized crossover clinical trial evaluated 60 systemically healthy children between 4 and 8 years, who were candidates for pulpotomy and steel crown of bilateral primary maxillary first or second molars. The patients were randomly divided into two groups of music-story (M first), and story-music (S first) according to the sequence of receipt of the distraction techniques with a split-mouth design. The level of pain and anxiety of patients was measured using physiological scales such as pulse rate (PR), sound-eye-motor (SEM) and faces pain rating (FPR). The pkcross package in Stata software version 14 was used to assess the treatment effect, period effect, sequence effect and carryover effect. RESULTS In each group, 28 cases were included in the analysis. The difference in PR was not significant at the onset and termination of each treatment session between two distraction techniques and also, the mean FPR (P = 0.55) and SEM (P > 0.99) scores were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS The "audio-story" and "music" distraction techniques were not significantly different for pediatrics relieving during LA administration. Thus, considering the equal efficacy of the two techniques, dental clinicians can use any of the two to distract children. Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of an interactive robot on Turkish children's post-operative anxiety, mobilization, and parents' satisfaction related to post-operative care. METHOD A randomized controlled study was conducted with 84 children who will undergo day surgery aged 5-10 years and their parents at a university hospital between June 2020-April 2022. The interactive robot was provided to accompany the children during the postoperative mobilization. Children in the control group received standard care during mobilization. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Children's State Anxiety (CSA), Parental Satisfaction Scale-Visual Analog Scale, and Mobilization Chart. RESULTS It was determined that the CSA score of the children in the control group were higher than the intervention group before their first mobilization after surgery (p = 0.005). During the first (p = 0.042) and second (p = 0.012) mobilization, it was determined that the mobilization duration of children in the intervention group was longer than the children in the control group. It was found that the parents of the children in the intervention group had a high level of satisfaction. CONCLUSION It has been determined that interactive robots positively affect postoperative mobilization in children undergoing day surgery, reduce the anxiety level of children before mobilization, and increase the duration of mobilization. In addition, the use of interactive robots increased parents' satisfaction with post-operative mobilization care. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Using interactive robots to reduce the stress and anxiety of children during the perioperative process can be a promising approach to improve their recovery by providing early mobilization.

Abstract
PURPOSE Music and animation are the most common and affordable distraction strategies to reduce preoperative anxiety in children; however, their effects are inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of two distraction strategies (music or animation) in reducing preoperative anxiety in children. DESIGN AND METHODS In this randomized controlled trial, 183 children who underwent surgery were divided into music, animation, and control groups using a single-blind block randomized design. Children in the control group underwent routine preoperative visits. Meanwhile, the children in the intervention groups could choose their favorite music and cartoons as intervention content. Study outcomes included anxiety levels, degree of cooperation, heart rate, and blood pressure. Data were collected before entering the operating room, entering the operating room, and before the induction of anesthesia; only the degree of cooperation was collected before the induction of anesthesia. RESULTS Only animation significantly reduced preoperative anxiety in the children (P < 0.05) upon entering the operating room. Both music and animation reduced the level of preoperative anxiety before induction of anesthesia; however, there was no significant difference between them (P > 0.05). The induction compliance score was significantly lower in the music and animation groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). Heart rates differed significantly between the three groups from before entering the operating room to before induction of anesthesia. Children in the control group had the highest systolic blood pressure upon entering the operating room (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Music and animation strategies can significantly reduce preoperative anxiety in children and improve surgical cooperation during anesthesia induction. TRIAL REGISTRATION Clinical. Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of music and playing with Lego in postoperative management pain in children. DESIGN AND METHODS In this three-group quasi-experimental study, the participants in this interventional study were 96 children aged 6 to 12 years admitted to the pediatric surgery ward of Mofid Hospital and Medical Center in Tehran. The participants were selected using convenience sampling. They were then randomly placed into three intervention groups. Pain intensity was measured for the participants in all three groups before the intervention. The intervention was performed in two 15-min sessions with an interval of 5 min in three intervention groups. Then pain intensity was measured using the Oucher Pain Scale before the intervention and in four intervals: Immediately after the intervention, half an hour, one hour, and 3 h after the intervention, respectively. Pain intensity was also measured at the same time intervals for the participants in the control group. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS-25 software using descriptive statistics, the Bonferroni test, and Tukey's test. RESULTS The data showed that the three groups were identical in terms of demographic characteristics (p > 0.05).A comparison of the music listening group and the control group showed statistically significant difference in terms of postoperative pain (P < 0.05).However, the data showed significant differences between the control group and the Lego group in terms of pain intensity immediately after the intervention, half an hour, one hour, and 3 h after the intervention, respectively (p < 0.05).The data also revealed a significant difference between the children in the music group and the Lego group at all phases (p < 0.05), and the children in the Lego group reported less pain after the intervention compared to the children in the music listening group. Nevertheless, there was a statistically significant difference between the three groups in terms of reported pain intensity half an hour, one hour, and three hours after the intervention (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The results showed that playing with Legos had a greater effect on reducing postoperative pain in children than listening to music. Thus, nurses are recommended to make arrangements for children to play with Legos after surgery. PRACTICE IMPLICATION Playing with Legos can be used to control postoperative pain in school-age children in medical centers and wards of pediatric hospitals.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to identify the effect of preoperative information on postoperative anxiety among children undergoing one-day eye surgery. We utilized a nonequivalent control group and a pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design. The participants were 15 children in the experimental group and 15 children in the control group. Preoperative information was provided to the experimental group in the waiting room. Anxiety level was measured using the Children’s Emotional Manifestation Scale and pulse rate. For pulse rate, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups. In the behavioral anxiety response, there were statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups (Z = −4.15, p < 0.001). The results suggest that the provision of preoperative information can be an effective intervention for reducing postoperative anxiety and improving the health of children undergoing surgery.
