Abstract
Vitamin A derivatives have inhibitory effects on cartilage tissue, such as decreasing chondrocyte proliferation and collagen synthesis, and increasing the loss of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans. Therefore, isotretinoin (a vitamin A derivative) may play a role in the pathogenesis of cartilage-related diseases like osteoarthritis by affecting the balance of cartilage tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distal femoral cartilage thickness in acne patients under the systemic isotretinoin therapy and to determine whether it constitutes a risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis. The study included 52 patients (42 female, 10 male, mean age 23.31 ± 3.89 years) who were prescribed systemic isotretinoin for acne and completed at least 3 months of treatment, along with 45 healthy controls ((35 female, 10 male, mean age 23.85 ± 4.77 years). Bilateral distal femoral cartilage thickness was measured by ultrasonography before isotretinoin treatment and after the completion of the third month of treatment. After treatment, a statistically significant increase was found in the thickness of the right medial, right lateral, left medial, left lateral, and left intercondylar cartilage (p = 0.014, 0.012, 0.019, 0.027, 0.002, respectively). There was also an increase in the right intercondylar cartilage thickness, but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.1). Systemic isotretinoin seems to make cartilage thicker. The increase in femoral cartilage thickness observed after short-term isotretinoin treatment might be an indicator of very early-stage osteoarthritis. Extended follow-up studies with larger participant pools are necessary to substantiate this result.

Abstract
Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and osteoarthritis involve similar factors in their pathogenesis. Both of these diseases are associated with an increased frequency of metabolic syndrome and underlying systemic inflammation. This study evaluated the thickness of the distal femoral cartilage using ultrasonography in patients with SD. The study enrolled 60 patients with SD (19 females and 41 males, mean age: 34.07 ± 12.56 years) and 60 controls matched for age and sex (20 females and 40 males, mean age: 35.08 ± 12.78 years). Ultrasonography was used to measure the distal femoral cartilage thickness (FCT) of the right medial condyle, right lateral condyle, right intercondylar area, left medial condyle, left lateral condyle, and left intercondylar area. FCT values at all points were significantly higher in patients with SD than in the controls (P < .05). Further, all FCT values were significantly higher in patients with moderate SD than in those with mild SD (P < .001). A strong positive correlation was observed between disease severity and FCT measured at right medial condyle (r = .7, P < .001), right lateral condyle (r = .749, P < .001), right intercondylar area (r = .79, P < .001), left medial condyle (r = .624, P < .001), and left intercondylar area (r = .703, P < .001). Further, a moderately positive correlation was observed between disease severity and FCT measured at left lateral condyle (r = .581, P < .001). Increased FCT in patients with SD might be an early indicator of osteoarthritis. However, further studies, especially those evaluating older patients with SD, are required to support our findings.

Abstract
Background Currently, conventional radiography is still widely used to diagnose knee osteoarthritis and assess the grade according to Kallgren and Lawrence's criteria. Ultrasound is a simple, inexpensive, noninvasive, and dynamic modality for evaluating femoral cartilage (FC) thickness. This study aims to measure the FC thickness in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients and compare it to healthy adults using ultrasound assessment. Methods An observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Hajj General Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia, from May to July 2022. Participants radiologically diagnosed with OA were included in the study and assigned to the OA group. Meanwhile, healthy adults without knee symptoms were included in the control group. FC thickness was measured using ultrasound scans at three sites: medial condyle (MC), intercondylar (IC), and lateral condyle (LC) on both sides of the knee. Results The mean age in the OA and control groups was 61.03 ± 8.6 and 33.93 ± 14.7 years, respectively. Most participants in both groups were female. The OA group exhibited a thinner FC (1.49-1.63 mm) than the control group (1.68-1.87 mm). There was a significant difference in the mean of the right and left MC in both groups (p < 0.05) but no significant difference in the IC and LC. Conclusion OA patients exhibited a thinner FC than healthy adults in the control group. There was a significant difference in the mean thickness of the MC between groups.

Abstract
A healthy articular cartilage is paramount to joint function. Cartilage defects, whether acute or chronic, are a significant source of morbidity. This review summarizes various imaging modalities used for cartilage assessment. While radiographs are insensitive, they are still widely used to indirectly assess cartilage. Ultrasound has shown promise in the detection of cartilage defects, but its efficacy is limited in many joints due to inadequate visualization. CT arthrography has the potential to assess internal derangements of joints along with cartilage, especially in patients with contraindications to MRI. MRI remains the favored imaging modality to assess cartilage. The conventional imaging techniques are able to assess cartilage abnormalities when cartilage is already damaged. The newer imaging techniques are thus targeted at detecting biochemical and structural changes in cartilage before an actual visible irreversible loss. These include, but are not limited to, T2 and T2* mapping, dGEMRI, T1ρ imaging, gagCEST imaging, sodium MRI and integrated PET with MRI. A brief discussion of the advances in the surgical management of cartilage defects and post-operative imaging assessment is also included.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first in the literature to assess distal femoral cartilage thickness and its relationship with ferritin levels in adult patients with beta thalassaemia major (BTM). MATERIALS AND METHODS 45 patients with BTM and 45 healthy controls were included in the study. Ferritin and haemoglobin levels of the patient and healthy groups were determined by blood analysis and distal femoral cartilage thicknesses were measured via ultrasound. Then, the patient group was divided into subgroups according to whether their ferritin levels were below or above 2500 µg/L. They were then compared among themselves and with the healthy control group using the available data. RESULTS Distal femoral cartilage thickness values were statistically significantly lower in the BTM group compared to the healthy control group (p values < 0.001). Patients with a ferritin level below 2500 µg/L had statistically significantly higher right and left average distal femoral cartilage thickness values than the patients with a ferritin level above 2500 µg/L (p = 0.029 and p = 0.019, respectively). The right and left average distal femoral cartilage thickness values of the patient subgroup with low ferritin levels were statistically similar to the control group (p = 0.146 and p = 0.164, respectively). CONCLUSION Our study showed that thalassaemia patients are more likely to develop osteoarthritis (OA) than the normal population and possible OA development can be prevented by keeping the ferritin levels of these patients in the optimum range.

Abstract
The second part of the Guidelines and Recommendations for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSUS), produced under the auspices of EFSUMB, following the same methodology as for Part 1, provides information and recommendations on the use of this imaging modality for joint pathology, pediatric applications, and musculoskeletal ultrasound-guided procedures. Clinical application, practical points, limitations, and artifacts are described and discussed for every joint or procedure. The document is intended to guide clinical users in their daily practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Radiographic changes in knee osteoarthritis (OA) are not always associated with symptoms, especially in its early stages. Ultrasonography (US) can detect early changes in the knee joint, but the changes that reflect symptoms have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to identify US-detectable changes in the knee that are often associated with knee symptoms and demonstrate the feasibility of early diagnosis in symptomatic knee OA using US. DESIGN In this cross-sectional community-based study, 1,667 participants aged ≥60 years (1,103 women [66%]) were included. All participants concurrently underwent US and radiography of the knee and completed the Knee Society Knee Scoring System (KSS) questionnaire. Simple and multiple regression analyses were used to examine the associations between US findings and KSS symptom subscales. RESULTS Among all participants, medial meniscus protrusion and medial osteophytes, age, and body mass index showed significant associations with KSS symptom scores. Among 894 participants with Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade ≤1, medial osteophytes and age were significantly associated with KSS symptom score. US measures were more related to KSS symptoms than KL grades. CONCLUSIONS Among the knee US-detectable changes, medial osteophytes were strongly associated with knee symptoms. Osteophytes are reliable predictors of symptomatic early knee OA, even in participants with few radiographic OA changes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ulcerative colitis is a systemic inflammatory disease which primarily involves the gut but presented by numerous extraintestinal manifestations. The effect of ulcerative colitis on knee cartilage has not been evaluated up to the present. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the possible relationship between the presence of ulcerative colitis and femoral cartilage thickness. DESIGN Sixty-two patients with confirmed diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and 70 healthy controls aged 18 to 50 years referred to the gastroenterology outpatient department between January 2018 and January 2019 participated in this cross-sectional study. The measurements were made by ultrasonography with the patient in a supine position and the knees in complete flexion. Demographic, clinical, endoscopic and laboratory data were collected for all the subjects. RESULTS The groups of ulcerative colitis and control group were similar with regard to sex, mean age, weight, height, body mass index, extremity dominancy, and existence of knee pain (P > 0.05). Medial femoral condyles, intercondylar areas, and lateral femoral condyles of both right and left knees had thinner cartilage thickness in ulcerative colitis group than control group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Knee cartilage was thinner in subjects with mild activity ulcerative colitis than in healthy controls. Decreased knee cartilage thickness may be an indicator of extraintestinal manifestation in patients with mild activity ulcerative colitis. This association between ulcerative colitis and knee cartilage degeneration may be effective in early detection of possible risk factors and potential treatment strategies for both ulcerative colitis and specific subtypes of knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to elucidate the association between joint line tenderness (JLT) of the knee and knee joint structural changes evaluated with ultrasonography (US) for the early diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 121 participants (age 71.7 ± 5.8 years, 75 women) from a community-based population. Bilateral structural changes in the knee joint were evaluated with US, and the presence or absence of JLT was evaluated using a pressure algometer. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the odds ratios (ORs) of US findings for the presence of JLT. Moreover, when the analysis was limited to knees with pre-/early radiographic KOA, the ORs were also calculated using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Among the 242 knees, 38 had medial JLT, which was significantly associated with female sex (OR 11.87) and loss of cartilage thickness of the distal medial femoral condyle (CTh-MFC) (OR 0.12). Among 96 knees with Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≤ 2, 18 knees had medial JLT, which was also significantly associated with loss of CTh-MFC (OR 0.07) and medial osteophytes (OR 2.01). CONCLUSIONS JLT is significantly associated with thinning of the femoral cartilage and larger osteophytes in elderly patients, even in those with pre-/early radiographic KOA.

Abstract
Objective Ultrasonography (US) has a promising role in evaluating the knee joint, but capability to visualize the femoral articular cartilage needs systematic evaluation. We measured the extent of this acoustic window by comparing standardized US images with the corresponding MRI views of the femoral cartilage. Design Ten healthy volunteers without knee pathology underwent systematic US and MRI evaluation of both knees. The femoral cartilage was assessed on the oblique transverse axial plane with US and with 3D MRI. The acoustic window on US was compared to the corresponding views of the femoral sulcus and both condyles on MRI. The mean imaging coverage of the femoral cartilage and the cartilage thickness measurements on US and MRI were compared. Results Mean imaging coverage of the cartilage of the medial femoral condyle was 66% (range 54%-80%) and on the lateral femoral condyle 37% (range 25%-51%) compared with MRI. Mean cartilage thickness measurement in the femoral sulcus was 3.17 mm with US and 3.61 mm with MRI (14.0% difference). The corresponding measurements in the medial femoral condyle were 1.95 mm with US and 2.35 mm with MRI (21.0% difference), and in the lateral femoral condyle, they were 2.17 mm and 2.73 mm (25.6% difference), respectively. Conclusion Two-thirds of the articular cartilage of the medial femoral condyle, and one-third in the lateral femoral condyle, can be assessed with US. The cartilage thickness measurements seem to be underestimated by US. These results show promise for the evaluation of the weight-bearing cartilage of the medial femoral condyle with US.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Helicobacter pylori is a major cause of gastritis and a potential trigger of inflammatory disease. The effect of H pylori infection on distal femoral cartilage has yet to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate femoral cartilage thickness in patients with H pylori infection and to find whether this infection affects femoral cartilage thickness. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 199 patients. To measure the thickness of femoral articular cartilage, 99 patients with H pylori infections and 100 with H pylori-negative controls were enrolled into two groups. The measurements were made using linear probe ultrasonography with the patients in supine positions and their knees in maximum flexion. Demographic, clinical, endoscopic and laboratory data were collected for all patients. RESULTS Both the right and left femoral condyles had thinner cartilage thickness in the H pylori-positive group than in the H pylori-negative group (P = .016, P = .036). For the intercondylar area and lateral femoral condyles, although the H pylori-positive patients had thinner femoral cartilage thickness than the H pylori-negative individuals for both extremities, this finding was not statistically significant (P > .05). CONCLUSION Femoral cartilage was thinner in patients with H pylori than patients without H pylori for right and left medial femoral condyles. This study suggests that H pylori infections may affect femoral cartilage thickness and potentially increase the risk of cartilage degeneration.

Abstract
In order to study the quantitative measurement method of articular cartilage thickness change based on MR image, 140 patients with no knee joint symptoms and 17 patients with knee joint damage were studied. FLASH, SE and FISP 3 sequences were scanned for all normal knee joints to determine the articular cartilage thickness. 17 patients with knee joint damage were followed up for six months. The thickness of their femoral condyle and femoral trochlea cartilage was measured by FLASH sequence and thickness changes are recorded. The results show that the thickness distribution of normal knee articular cartilage in different parts is not equal, and the thickness of articular cartilage will be gradually thinner in different ages; MR image technique can observe the change of articular cartilage thickness in patients with knee joint damage, reflecting the recovery status of the patient's condition. The results of quantitative measurement of changes in articular cartilage thickness based on MR images are presented herein, and the results are as expected. Experimental data were provided for the clinical treatment of acute knee injury and osteoarthritis. Although there are still some shortcomings in the research process, the research results still provide some reference and guidance for the future exploration of the use of MR images to monitor the condition of arthritis, so this study is a significant research topic.
