Abstract
A series of Ru(II) and Ir(III) based photoluminescent complexes were synthesised that incorporate an ancillary 2,2'-bipyridine ligand adorned with either one or two pendant N-methyl imidazolium groups. These complexes have been fully characterised by an array of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. One Ir(III) example was unequivocally structurally characterised in the solid state using single crystal X-ray diffraction confirming the proposed formulation and coordination sphere. These complexes were then transformed into their heterometallic, Au(I)-containing, analogues in two steps to yield either bi- or trimetallic complexes that integrate {Au(PPh3)}+ units. X-ray diffraction was used to corroborate the solid state structure of the hetero bimetallic complex, based upon a Ru(II)-Au(I) species. The heterometallic complexes all displayed red photoluminescent features (λem = 616-629 nm) that were consistent with the parent Ru(II) or Ir(III) lumophores in each case. The modulation of the emission from the Ru(II)-Au(I) complexes was much more strongly evident than for the Ir(III)-Au(I) analogues, which is ascribed to the inherent differences in the specific triplet excited state character of the emitting states within each heterometallic species.

Abstract
Pt(II) diynes and polyynes incorporating 5,5'- and 6,6'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines were prepared following conventional Sonogashira and Hagihara dehydrohalogenation reaction protocols. Using Pt(II) dimers and polymers as a rigid-rod backbone, four new heterobimetallic compounds incorporating Re(CO)3Cl as a pendant functionality in the 2,2'-bipyridine core were obtained. The new heterobimetallic Pt-Re compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The solid-state structures of a Re(I)-coordinated diterminal alkynyl ligand and a representative model compound were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Detailed photophysical characterization of the heterobimetallic Pt(II) diynes and polyynes was carried out. We find that the incorporation of the Re(CO)3Cl pendant functionality in the 2,2'-bipyridine-containing main-chain Pt(II) diynes and polyynes has a synergistic effect on the optical properties, red shifting the absorption profile and introducing strong long-wavelength absorptions. The Re(I) moiety also introduces strong emission into the monomeric Pt(II) diyne compounds, whereas this is suppressed in the polyynes. The extent of the synergy depends on the topology of the ligands. Computational modeling was performed to compare the energetic stabilities of the positional isomers and to understand the microscopic nature of the major optical transitions. We find that 5,5'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridine systems are better candidates in terms of yield, photophysical properties, and stability than their 6,6'-substituted counterparts. Overall, this work provides an additional synthetic route to control the photophysical properties of metallaynes for a variety of optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
A series of neutral and cationic heterotrimetallic complexes of the type fac-[Re(CO)3(bipy(CC)2-(AuL)2)X]n, where bipy(CC)2 is 4,4'-alkynyl-2,2'-bipyridine; L is either triphenylphosphine (PPh3), [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene] (IPr), or tert-butyl isocyanide (CNtBu); and X is a chloride (n = 0) or acetonitrile (n = 1), were synthesized and characterized together with their Re(I) precursors, i.e., fac-[Re(CO)3(bipy(CC)2)X]n. X-ray diffraction of complexes 1, 3, and 6 corroborated the expected octahedral and linear distribution of the ligands along the Re(I) and Au(I) centers, respectively. Luminescent studies showed that all the complexes displayed a broad emission band centered between 565 and 680 nm, corresponding to a 3MLCT from the Re(I) to the diimine derivative. The presence of the gold fragment coordinated to the diimine ligand shifted in all cases the emission maxima toward higher energies. Such an emission difference could be potentially used for assessing the precise moment of interaction of the probe with the biological target if the gold fragment is implicated. Antiproliferative studies in cancer cells, A549 (lung cancer) and HeLa (cervix cancer), showed a generalized selectivity toward HeLa cells for those heterotrimetallic species incubated at longer times (72 vs 24 h). ICP-MS spectrometry revealed the greater cell internalization of cationic vs neutral species. Preliminary fluorescence microscopy experiments showed a different behavior of the complexes in HeLa and A549 cell lines. Whereas the complexes in A549 were randomly distributed in the outside of the cell, those incubated with HeLa cells were located close to the cellular membrane, suggesting some type of interaction, and possibly explaining their cellular selectivity when it comes to the antiproliferative activity displayed in the different cell lines.

Abstract
The synthesis and photoluminescence properties of three-coordinate Au(i) complexes with rigid diphosphine ligands LMe {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, LEt {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and LiPr {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene} are investigated. The LMe and LEt ligands afford two types of complexes: dinuclear complexes [μ-LMe(AuCl)2] (1d) and [μ-LEt(AuCl)2] (2d) with an Au(i)-Au(i) bond and mononuclear three-coordinate Au(i) complexes LMeAuCl (1) and LEtAuCl (2). On the other hand, the bulkiest ligand, LiPr, affords three-coordinate Au(i) complexes, LiPrAuCl (3) and LiPrAuI (4), but no dinuclear complexes. X-ray analysis suggests that both 3 and 4 possess a highly distorted trigonal planar geometry. Moreover, luminescence data reveal that at room temperature, 3 and 4 exhibit yellow-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence in the crystalline state with maximum emission wavelengths at 558 and 549 nm, respectively. The emission yields are close to unity. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the emission of 4 originates from the (σ + X) → π* excited state that possesses strong intraligand charge-transfer character. The luminescent properties of four-coordinate Au(i) complex (5) possessing a tetrahedral geometry are discussed on the basis of the emission spectra and decay times measured in a temperature range of 309-77 K.

Abstract
The bifunctional aminopyridine ligands H2 N-(CH2 )n -4-C5 H4 N (n=0, L1; 1, L2; 2, L3) have been utilized for the preparation of the rhenium complexes [Re(phen)(CO)3 (L1-L3)]+ (1-3; phen=phenanthroline). Complexes 2 and 3 with NH2 -coordinated L2 and L3, respectively, were coupled with cycloplatinated motifs {Pt(ppy)Cl} and {Pt(dpyb)}+ (ppy=2-phenylpyridine, dpyb=dipyridylbenzene) to give the bimetallic species [Re(phen)(CO)3 (μ-L2/L3)Pt(ppy)Cl]+ (4, 6) and [Re(phen)(CO)3 (μ-L2/L3)Pt(dpyb)]2+ (5, 7). In solution, complexes 4 and 6 show 3 MLCT {Re}-based emission at 298 K, which changes to the 3 IL(ppy) state at 77 K. The photophysical properties of compounds 5 and 7 display a pronounced concentration dependence, presumably due to the formation of bimolecular aggregates. Analysis of the spectroscopic data, combined with TD-DFT simulations, suggest that unconventional heteroleptic {Re(phen)}⋅⋅⋅{Pt(dpyb)} π-π stacking operates as the driving force for ground-state association. The latter, together with intra- and intermolecular energy-transfer processes, determines the appearance of multiple emission bands and results in nonlinear relaxation kinetics of the excited states.

Abstract
Heteroheptanuclear ReM6 (M = Cu 2, Ag 3) complexes of 5,5-diethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine were prepared by the reaction of [M2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) with the precursor compound Re(Me3SiC[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]CSiMe3)(CO)3Cl in the presence of potassium fluoride by fluoride-catalyzed desilylation. When [Cu2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ reacts directly with Me3SiC[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]CSiMe3, a binuclear CuI complex [Cu2(mu-dppm)2(SiMe3C[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]CSiMe3)2]2+ (4) was isolated. Further addition of [Cu2(mu-dppm)2(MeCN)2]2+ into a THF-MeOH (3:1, v/v) solution of 4 in the presence of potassium fluoride induced isolation of a tetradecanuclear CuI14 complex [Cu14(mu-dppm)14(C[triple bond]CbpyC[triple bond]C)2]10+, which is composed of a binuclear Cu2(mu-dppm)2 and four triangular trinuclear Cu3 units. Both heteroheptanuclear ReIMI6 and tetradecanuclear CuI14 complexes display luminescence in both solid states and dichloromethane solutions at room temperature with emissive lifetimes in the range of microseconds. The dual emissive feature for the ReM6 and CuI14 complexes is ascribed tentatively to originate from both MLCT [d(Re/Cu) -->pi* (bpy)] and LMCT (acetylide --> M3) transitions. .
