Promising Applications of Nanotechnology in Cancer Diagnostics and Therapeutics

Cancer is characterized by the accumulation of genetic mutations in cells by different types of mutagens such as physical, chemical, and biological. Consequently, normal cell cycles get interrupted. Conventional techniques used for diagnosis include. Various conventional techniques used for cancer diagnosis include immunological assays, histopathogical tests, polymerase chain reaction, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, radiation therapy, and many more. These techniques are expensive, time consuming, tedious, adverse effects to healthy cells and requirement of skilled personnel for their operation. Therefore nanomaterials based biosensors have been used for the sensitive, selective, economic and quick detection of cancer biomarkers. Electrochemical biosensors have shown profound impact in efficient diagnosis of cancers that facilitate the effective treatment of patient in acute stage. Nanomaterials including inorganic, organic and polymeric nanomaterials have been used in the treatment of different types of cancers. Nanoapproaches have offered several merits including site-specific, require traces amount of therapeutic molecules, limited toxicity, avoid drug resistance, more efficient, sensitive and reliable than conventional chemotherapeutics and radiation therapies. Therefore, future research should be focussed on development of highly inventive nanotools for the diagnosis and therapeutics of cancers.

Self-assembled selenium monolayers: from nanotechnology to materials science and adaptive catalysis

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of selenium have emerged into a rapidly developing field of nanotechnology with several promising opportunities in materials chemistry and catalysis. Comparison between sulfur-based self-assembled monolayers and newly developed selenium-based monolayers reveal outstanding complimentary features on surface chemistry and highlighted the key role of the headgroup element. Diverse structural properties and reactivity of organosulfur and organoselenium groups on the surface provide flexible frameworks to create new generations of materials and adaptive catalysts with unprecedented selectivity. Important practical utility of adaptive catalytic systems deals with development of sustainable technologies and industrial processes based on natural resources. Independent development of nanotechnology, materials science and catalysis has led to the discovery of common fundamental principles of the surface chemistry of chalcogen compounds.

Gemini imidazolium amphiphiles for the synthesis, stabilization, and drug delivery from gold nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are considered useful vehicles for medical therapy and diagnosis. Despite the progress made in this field, there is need to find direct, reliable, and versatile synthetic procedures for their preparation as well as new multifunctional coating agents. In this sense, we have explored the use of imidazolium amphiphiles to prepare new AuNPs designed for anion recognition and transport. Thus, in this work we describe (a) the synthesis, by a phase transfer method, of new gold nanoparticles using gemini-type surfactants as ligands based on imidazolium salts, those ligands acting as transfer agents into organic media and also as nanoparticle stabilizers, (b) the examination of their stability in solution, (c) the chemical and physical characterization of the nanoparticles, using a variety of techniques, including UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), (d) toxicity data concerning both the imidazolium ligands and the imidazolium coated nanoparticles, (e) the assessment of their molecular recognition ability toward molecules of biological interest, such as anions and carboxylate containing model drugs, such as ibuprofen, (f) the study of their toxicity and those of their coating ligands, as well as their ability for cell internalization, and (g) the study of their ability for delivering anionic pharmaceuticals. The structurally governed triple role of those new gemini-type surfactants is responsible for the preparation, remarkable stability, and delivery properties of these functional AuNPs.
