Abstract
The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of iridium(III) complexes having two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin or tetrahydrocurcumin as ancillary ligand have been investigated both in solution and as guest in a polymeric organic matrix. In solution, these complexes are characterized by a significant second-order NLO response, as determined by the Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) technique, like the related complex with acetylacetonate. Whereas the low second-harmonic generation response of a composite film of [Ir(2-phenylpyridine)2(acetylacetonate)] in polymethyl methacrylate was not stable and fell down to zero upon turning off the electric field. A good and stable response was obtained with a film based on the iridium(III) complex bearing two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin.

Abstract
Three star-shaped compounds based on a truxene core (FS11, FS12 and FS13) were prepared. The truxene core is incorporating with asymmetric diphenylamines, including one phenyl of diphenylamine substituted by methoxy group and the other phenyl substituted by tolyl, fluorophenyl and phenylethynyl for FS11, FS12 and FS13, respectively. Their one-photon, two-photon absorption, geometric structures, electrochemical behavior and thermal properties were investigated. The absorption maxima of charge transfer band for FS11, FS12 and FS13 are 375nm, 373nm and 383nm, and the corresponding molar extinction coefficients of FS11, FS12 and FS13 is 79,950M-1cm-1, 67,220M-1cm-1 and 108,780M-1cm-1. The "pull-push" structure promotes charge transfer between asymmetric diphenylamine branches and the truxene core. Their two-photon absorbtion property is measured by two-photon induced fluorescence. The maximum two-photon cross-sections values of FS11, FS12 and FS13 are excited at 750nm, which are 260 GM, 204GM and 367 GM, respectively.

Abstract
Two starburst molecules based on pyrene with truxene cores, PYT and PYET, have been designed and synthesised by Pd(0)-catalysed Suzuki coupling and Sonogashira coupling reactions, respectively. Due to the different conjugation length, the solution absorption and emission spectra of PYET in dilute THF were redshifted compared with those of PYT. The solid absorption and emission spectra of PYET were also redshifted. Their thermal decomposition temperatures ( Td) were over 400 °C, and the glass transition temperatures ( Tg) were 96 and 124 °C, respectively, which showed that both materials possess good thermal stability. Electrochemical analysis implied that the HOMOs of PYET and PYT were similar.
