Copper-Catalyzed Ring-Opening Reactions of Alkyl Aziridines with B2pin2: Experimental and Computational Studies

The possibility to form new C-B bonds with aziridines using diboron derivatives continues to be a particularly challenging field in view of the direct preparation of functionalized β-aminoboronates, which are important compounds in drug discovery, being a bioisostere of β-aminoacids. We now report experimental and computational data that allows the individuation of the structural requisites and of reaction conditions necessary to open alkyl aziridines using bis(pinacolate)diboron (B₂pin₂) in a regioselective nucleophilic addition reaction under copper catalysis.

Regio- and Stereoselective Synthesis of Multi-Alkylated Allylic Boronates through Three-Component Coupling Reactions between Allenes, Alkyl Halides, and a Diboron Reagent

Multisubstituted allylic boronates are attractive and valuable precursors for the rapid and stereoselective construction of densely substituted carbon skeletons. Herein, we report the first synthetic approach for differentially 2,3,3-trialkyl-substituted allylic boronates that contain a stereodefined tetrasubstituted alkene structure. Copper(I)-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective three-component coupling reactions between gem-dialkylallenes, alkyl halides, and a diboron reagent afforded sterically congested allylic boronates. The allylboration of aldehydes diastereoselectively furnished the corresponding homoallylic alcohols that bear a quaternary carbon. A computational study revealed that the selectivity-determining mechanism was correlated to the coordination of a boryl copper(I) species to the allene substrate as well as the borylcupration step.

Diboron-controlled product selectivity switch in copper-catalyzed decarboxylative substitutions of alkynyl cyclic carbonates

DFT calculations were performed to explore the mechanisms, origins of diboron-controlled divergent product selectivity and stereoselectivity in the copper-catalyzed decarboxylative substitution of alkynyl cyclic carbonates.

A mechanistic study on Cu(i) catalyzed carboxylation of the C-F bond with CO2: a DFT study

The Cu(i) catalyzed carboxylation of the C-F bond recently reported by Yu and co-workers is an excellent method for the construction of complex fluoroacrylate compounds with high regioselectivity. In the present study, theoretical calculations were carried out to investigate the detailed mechanism of the catalytic cycle and the origin of regioselectivity. The calculation results reveal that the overall catalytic cycle proceeds via the migratory insertion of difluoroalkene on the boryl-Cu(i) species, synβ-F elimination, transmetalation, and carboxylation steps. The rate determining step is the carboxylation step, and the migration insertion is the regioselectivity determining step. The regioselectivity for 2,1-insertion is consistent with Yu's experiment, and is determined by both steric and electronic effects.

Fe3O4@C@OSO3H as an efficient, recyclable magnetic nanocatalyst in Pechmann condensation: green synthesis, characterization, and theoretical study

Novel sulfonated carbon-coated magnetic nanoparticles (SCCMNPs; Fe₃O₄@C@OSO₃H) were designed, synthesized, characterized, and applied as an efficient nanocatalyst for green synthesis of coumarin derivatives through Pechmann condensation. The Fe₃O₄@C@OSO₃H was manufactured through a simple and inexpensive two-step procedure and characterized by FTIR, EDX, XRD, SEM, TEM, DLS, VSM, and TGA techniques. It was identified as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the Pechmann condensation of phenol derivatives and β-ketoesters, leading to high-yield coumarin derivatives under solvent-free conditions. The Fe₃O₄@C@OSO₃H removed after reaction finishing point by an external magnet, and it was reused fifteen times at the same conditions. Besides, theoretical studies were carried out using B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) to more consideration of the reaction mechanism. The study of the frontier molecular orbitals, NBO atomic charges, molecular electrostatic potential of reactants, as well as Pechmann condensation mechanism was known very useful in suitable reactant choice. The reaction was performed through the electrophilic attack, dehydration, and trans-esterification, respectively.
