Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Magnesium Pentalenides

The first magnesium pentalenide complexes have been synthesized via deprotonative metalation of 1,3,4,6-tetraphenyldihydropentalene (Ph4PnH2) with magnesium alkyls. Both the nature of the metalating agent and the reaction solvent influenced the structure of the resulting complexes, and an equilibrium between Mg[Ph4Pn] and [nBuMg]2[Ph4Pn] was found to exist and investigated by NMR, XRD, and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. Studies on the reactivity of Mg[Ph4Pn] with water, methyl iodide, and trimethylsilylchloride revealed that the [Ph4Pn]2- unit undergoes electrophilic addition at 1,5-positions instead of 1,4-positions known for the unsubstituted pentalenide, Pn2-, highlighting the electronic influence of the four aryl substituents on the pentalenide core. The ratio of syn/anti addition was found to be dependent on the size of the incoming electrophile, with methylation yielding a 60:40 mixture, while silylation yielded exclusively the anti-isomer.

Gas-Phase Formation of 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene (C8H8) through Ring Expansion via the Aromatic 1,3,5-Cyclooctatrien-7-yl Radical (C8H9•) Transient

Gas-phase 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (C₈H₈) and triplet aromatic 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (C₈H₈) were formed for the first time through bimolecular methylidyne radical (CH)-1,3,5-cycloheptatriene (C₇H₈) reactions under single-collision conditions on a doublet surface. The reaction involves methylidyne radical addition to the olefinic π electron system of 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene followed by isomerization and ring expansion to an aromatic 1,3,5-cyclooctatrien-7-yl radical (C₈H₉^•). The chemically activated doublet radical intermediate undergoes unimolecular decomposition to 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene. Substituted 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene molecules can be prepared in the gas phase with hydrogen atom(s) in the 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene reactant being replaced by organic side groups. These findings are also of potential interest to organometallic chemists by expanding the synthesis of exotic transition-metal complexes incorporating substituted 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene dianion (C₈H₈^2-) ligands and to untangle the unimolecular decomposition of chemically activated and substituted 1,3,5-cyclooctatrien-7-yl radical, eventually gaining a fundamental insight of their bonding chemistry, electronic structures, and stabilities.

An Allyl Uranium(IV) Sandwich Complex: Are ϕ Bonding Interactions Possible?

A method to explore head‐to‐head ϕ back‐bonding from uranium f‐orbitals into allyl π* orbitals has been pursued. Anionic allyl groups were coordinated to uranium with tethered anilide ligands, then the products were investigated by using NMR spectroscopy, single‐crystal XRD, and theoretical methods. The (allyl)silylanilide ligand, N‐((dimethyl)prop‐2‐enylsilyl)‐2,6‐diisopropylaniline (LH), was used as either the fully protonated, singly deprotonated, or doubly deprotonated form, thereby highlighting the stability and versatility of the silylanilide motif. A free, neutral allyl group was observed in UI₂(L1)₂ (1), which was synthesized by using the mono‐deprotonated ligand [K][N‐((dimethyl)prop‐2‐enyl)silyl)‐2,6‐diisopropylanilide] (L1). The desired homoleptic sandwich complex U[L2]₂ (2) was prepared from all three ligand precursors, but the most consistent results came from using the dipotassium salt of the doubly deprotonated ligand [K]₂[N‐((dimethyl)propenidesilyl)‐2,6‐diisopropylanilide] (L2). This allyl‐based sandwich complex was studied by using theoretical techniques with supporting experimental spectroscopy to investigate the potential for phi (ϕ) back‐bonding. The bonding between U^IV and the allyl fragments is best described as ligand‐to‐metal electron donation from a two carbon fragment‐localized electron density into empty f‐orbitals.
