Abstract
INTRODUCTION Analyzing highly-cited articles can provide a retrospective assessment of research evolution and predict future developments. The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited articles in dentistry by authors with an Italian affiliation. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION All the articles published in journals indexed under the Scopus category "Dentistry" and with at least one author affiliated to any Italian institution were searched in September 2022. The 100 most-cited articles were selected and relevant data were extracted and summarized. The analysis of co-authorship at country level and co-occurrence of keywords was carried out. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS The 100 most-cited articles were published between 1976 and 2020. The number of citations ranged from 235 to 1683, with a mean of 361. The series included 25 citation classics (>400 citations). The majority of articles were classified as expert opinion/narrative reviews (N.=47). Almost half of the articles refer to three predominant disciplines which were implantology, periodontology and restorative dentistry. Only two articles were single-authored. In 30 articles, all the authors had an Italian affiliation and the US was the most frequent country for non-Italian authors. Only one article was published in journals owned by a non-Italian publisher. CONCLUSIONS The present series of highly-cited articles confirms the important role of Italy in dental research. We found an absence of correlation between the level of evidence and the number of citations and a non-homogeneous distribution of highly-cited papers in the different dental disciplines. The majority of articles included in the series shared international co-authorship and were published in high-impact journals.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify and analyze articles on enamel microabrasion for the treatment of white spot lesions. A search was conducted on the Web of Science. The following parameters were recorded and analyzed: number of citations, year, journal, impact factor, study design, theme, country and continent, institution, authors, and keywords. Data was analyzed using VOSviewer software. The initial search resulted in 1,126 documents, of which 94 articles were included. The highest number of citations an article received was 65. The oldest article was published in 1975, and the most recent in 2023. The most frequent study design was case report (n = 42). Regarding the themes, it was observed that the main objective of the studies was to evaluate the clinical performance of enamel microabrasion (n = 75), primarily using Opalustre (Ultradent Products Inc., South Jordan, UT, USA) (n = 37) for treating white stains caused by dental fluorosis (n = 41). Most articles originated from Latin America (n = 31), mainly from Brazil (n = 26). The most frequent author was Sundfeld RH (n = 10). This study reveals research trends in the field of enamel microabrasion. The publications were mainly case reports/series using Opalustre for the removal of fluorosis stains.

Abstract
PURPOSE Anticipating trends and pursuing innovative ideas are imperative for the advancement of science. The objective of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 3-dimensional virtual simulation in orthognathic surgery, explore its implications for clinical practice, and identify future publication trends through digital tools. METHODS This study employed a retrospective bibliometric analysis using data obtained from the Web of Science database. The search strategy focused on articles related to orthognathic surgery and virtual simulation techniques. RStudio and bibliometrix tools were used to data mining. The independent variables retrieved from digital analysis were the emerging themes related to virtual planning in orthognathic surgery. The trends that we identified were facial esthetics, digital workflow, personalized treatments, and complex cases. The primary outcome variable was the number of publications dedicated to virtual simulation in orthognathic surgery, along with secondary outcomes such as citation rates, language of publication, country of origin, institutional affiliations, and emerging research themes. Covariates included variables related to publication characteristics, author affiliations, and geographic distribution of publications. Publication analyses over time involved descriptive statistics, regression analysis, Pearson correlation tests, and graphical representation techniques. Statistical significance was set at a 95% confidence interval (P value < .05). RESULTS A comprehensive analysis of 987 articles reveals the impact of included authors, with a mean h-index of 62 (SD = 18.4). The analysis further illuminates a discernible upward trend in publications on this subject, showcasing a linear pattern with a notable R2 value of 0.88 (P = .021). English remains the predominant language of publication, accounting for 97.97% of articles, while contributions hailed from a diverse spectrum of 56 countries. Interestingly, a moderate correlation emerges between publication numbers and gross domestic product per capita (r = 0.30, P = .044) and total area (r = 0.30, P = .032), whereas a more substantial correlation is evident with total population (r = 0.61, P = .034). Notably, the most cited article amassed 254 citations. Furthermore, a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.97 underscores the correlation between citation density and the year of publication. CONCLUSION The bibliometric indicators provided insights for evaluating research productivity and the quality of research output. Emerging themes included facial esthetics, 3-dimensional printing, and the utilization of custom-made templates and implants. This study holds relevance for maxillofacial surgeons, academics, and researchers alike.

Abstract
PURPOSE This paper aims to provide a bibliometric analysis of the maxillofacial reconstruction literature over 40 years and to compare the data with previous studies. METHODS A bibliographical search for oral and maxillofacial surgery literature in maxillofacial reconstruction was conducted on Wef of Science. A graphic representation of authorship and keywords was created with VOSviewer. Mendeley and Microsoft Excel were used for tabulation and data visualization. Some statistical tests were performed with a 95 % confidence interval, which was considered significant. RESULTS A total of 7417 articles from specialized journals were included in the study. These articles received 138,493 citations from 63,390 other studies, with an average citation count of 18.67, and a very high H-index. A total of 2375 specific keywords were analyzed, covering a wide range of topics, with two noteworthy MeSH keywords that have recently gained prominence. A total of 33 journals were included in the study, with a mean Impact Factor of 2.404, indicating a relatively high influence in the subject area. CONCLUSION The high h-index reflects abundant and high-quality literature on maxillofacial reconstruction, with the United States leading in publication quantity. Emerging topics in maxillofacial reconstruction were discussed. These areas shape the discipline, driving advancements and offering opportunities for researchers and clinicians to contribute to progress and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
AIM To analyze the scientific production related to the use of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) in the management of bruxism and evaluate its scope, impact, networks, and new research trends. MATERIALS AND METHODS A descriptive and retrospective study of publications indexed in Scopus from January 2018 to May 2024 was conducted. The bibliometric indicators evaluated were a number of publications, citations, h-index, SCImago Journal Rank 2022, CiteScore 2022, Lotka's Law, Bradford's Law, and keyword co-occurrence analysis. Data were processed using SciVal and VOSviewer. RESULTS We obtained 98 publications, including original articles, reviews, and other types of documents. Among the most productive authors, most were from South Korea and Turkey. Wonkwang University (South Korea) had the highest number of publications, while Baylor College of Medicine (USA) had the highest impact with 66.5 citations per publication. Toxins had the highest number of publications and the best Cite Score in 2022. Six main topics related to BTX-A in bruxism were identified, highlighting "reviews," "electromyography" and "controlled clinical trials". CONCLUSIONS The use of BTX-A for the treatment of bruxism has generated increasing interest and scientific output in recent years, especially in South Korea and Brazil. However, there is a disparity in the productivity of authors, with most authors presenting only one publication. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study highlights the need for further research and collaborations to optimize clinical practice and better understand the efficacy and management of BTX-A for treating bruxism. Abstract
This study aimed to explore seasonal variations in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) prevalence in South Korea, utilizing nationwide population-based big data. Data corresponding to the Korean Standard Classification of Diseases code of K07.6, which identifies TMD, were extracted from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service online platform for the period from 2010 to 2022. Additionally, we integrated these data with climate temperature records from the Korean Meteorological Administration. We subsequently conducted a statistical analysis of TMD patient data on a monthly and seasonal basis over the past 13 years to assess prevalence. Over the past 13 years, the number of TMD patients in Korea has steadily increased. The prevalence of TMD rose from 0.48% (224,708 out of a total population of 50,515,666) in 2010 to 0.94% (482,241 out of a total population of 51,439,038) in 2022, marking a 1.96-fold increase. Among children under 10 years of age, no significant differences were observed in TMD prevalence between boys and girls. However, a distinct female predominance emerged after the age of 10, with an average female-to-male ratio of 1.51:1. The peak prevalence of TMD occurred in individuals in their 20 s, followed by adolescents in their late 10 s. The majority of TMD patients were concentrated in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, with metropolitan areas accounting for 50% of the total patient count. Seasonally, TMD patient numbers showed no significant increase in winter compared with spring or summer. The temperature difference, defined as the absolute difference between the highest and lowest temperatures for each month, showed a positive correlation with TMD patient counts. A greater temperature difference was associated with higher patient counts. The strongest correlation between temperature differences and TMD patient numbers was observed in winter (r = 0.480, p < 0.01), followed by summer (r = 0.443, p < 0.01), and spring (r = 0.366, p < 0.05). Temperature differences demonstrated a significantly stronger correlation with the increase in the number of TMD patients than absolute climate temperatures. This aspect should be a key consideration when examining seasonal trends in TMD prevalence in South Korea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in kidney care has seen a significant rise in recent years. This study specifically analyzed AI and ML research publications related to kidney care to identify leading authors, institutions, and countries in this area. It aimed to examine publication trends and patterns, and to explore the impact of collaborative efforts on citation metrics. METHODS The study used the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) of Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection to search for AI and machine learning publications related to nephrology from 1992 to 2021. The authors used quotation marks and Boolean operator "or" to search for keywords in the title, abstract, author keywords, and Keywords Plus. In addition, the 'front page' filter was applied. A total of 5425 documents were identified and analyzed. RESULTS The results showed that articles represent 75% of the analyzed documents, with an average author to publications ratio of 7.4 and an average number of citations per publication in 2021 of 18. English articles had a higher citation rate than non-English articles. The USA dominated in all publication indicators, followed by China. Notably, the research also showed that collaborative efforts tend to result in higher citation rates. A significant portion of the publications were found in urology journals, emphasizing the broader scope of kidney care beyond traditional nephrology. CONCLUSIONS The findings underscore the importance of AI and ML in enhancing kidney care, offering a roadmap for future research and implementation in this expanding field.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to analyse papers concerning journal impact factors published in the Injury-International Journal of the Care of the Injured between 1997 and 2022. Through this analysis, the research offers valuable insights into the publication performance and contributors to the journal impact factor, encompassing papers, authors, institutions, and countries. METHODS Articles and reviews published in the Injury between 1995 and 2021 were examined using the Science Citation Index Expanded database. The study employed the journal impact factor contributing indicator to compare highly cited and high journal impact factor papers across various aspects, including papers, authors, institutions, and countries. RESULTS A notable correlation exists between prolific authors, institutions, and countries, alongside those who contribute to high journal impact factors. However, a less distinct connection was observed between highly cited papers/authors and high journal impact factor contributors. The Injury serves as a well-regarded international journal. Notably, editorial members of the journal play a substantial role, serving as model editors and contributing significantly to the journal's success. Out of the Top 25 IF contributing papers with the CN of 34 or more the following themes were noted to dominate: bone healing/tissue regeneration (40 %) of papers, covid-19 pandemic (24 %), polytrauma/coagulopathy (12 %) and infection (8 %). CONCLUSIONS Utilizing the journal impact factor to assess research performance at the individual, institutional, or national levels appears not to be the most appropriate method. The results show that highly cited authors did not hold the distinction of being the primary contributors to the IF. Analysis revealed a low significant relationship among the primary contributors to the IF, highly cited papers, and the most influential papers in 2022. A more effective indicator could involve considering the total number of citations a publication receives from its year of publication up to the end of the most recent year.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to comprehensively analyze the global landscape of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) literature through bibliometrics. The research focuses on evaluating publication trends, influential topics, and the impact of scholarly works within the field. METHODS Following the principles of the Leiden Manifesto, a literature search was conducted using the Web of Science database, encompassing seven OMFS journals. A total of 18,218 publications were analyzed, with indicators such as publication language, geographic location, specialty, year, citation, and authorship examined. Statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation tests and angular coefficient calculations, were performed in RStudio. RESULTS The study revealed a strong upward trend in publications related to orthognathic surgery, trauma, and infections. Geographic analysis indicated a dominance of European and Asian contributions, with the USA leading in overall publications. The impact of self-citations was explored, emphasizing nuanced perspectives on their role in scholarly impact metrics. The data provided insights into the scholarly impact of OMFS publications, including the H-index, number of citations, and citing articles. CONCLUSION The findings underscored potential global discrepancies in OMFS research, both geographically and in terms of topics covered. The study discussed the influence of language and journal impact on citation counts, emphasizing the role of English publications. Specific topics, such as trauma and infections, exhibited high scholarly interest and citation rates. Recommendations were made to encourage submissions on specific topics, such as cosmetic surgery and pathology, to enhance the diversity of OMFS literature. The study aims to foster international collaboration and leverage bibliometrics for evidence-based decision-making, educational strategies, and advancements in the dynamic field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism is an umbrella term that encompass a multidimensional spectrum of masticatory muscle activities. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to do a bibliometric analysis including citation performance in the research topic of bruxism, by using an innovative method including details of article title, author keyword, KeyWords Plus and abstracts. METHODS The data were retrieved 2022-12-19 from the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection, and the online version of the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) for studies published 1992 to 2021. To evaluate research trends, the distribution of keywords in the article title and author-selected keywords were used. RESULTS The search yielded 3233 documents in SCI-EXPANDED, of which 2598 were of the document-type 'articles' published in 676 journals. The analysis of the articles revealed that "bruxism/sleep bruxism," "electromyography," "temporomandibular disorders" and "masticatory muscles" are the most used keywords by the authors. Further, the most frequently cited study was published 9 years ago and handles the present definition of bruxism. CONCLUSION The most productive authors and those with the highest performance have some common features; they have several national and international collaborations; and they have published articles about the definition, aetiology/pathophysiology and prevalence of bruxism, all senior researchers in the field of TMD. Hopefully, based on this study, researchers and clinicians will have information to be stimulated to outline future research projects on bruxism-related aspects, and to initiate new international or multinational collaborations.

Abstract
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement is the most common temporomandibular disorders (TMD) condition. It causes clicking, pain, limited mandibular movements, and even masticatory difficulties in many people. The aim of this study is showcasing hotspots and frontiers in the field and providing a reference for the future research by a bibliometric analysis. Studies published from 1992 to 2022 were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection on 23 April 2023. A total of 1882 studies (1739 articles and 143 reviews) were included in the bibliometric analysis. From 1992 to 2022, the annual number of publications and citations greatly increased. The United States of America (USA) contributed the most publications about TMJ disc displacement. Shanghai Jiao Tong University was the most productive institution; meanwhile, Yang, C. from this institution was the most prolific author. The University of Washington was the most influential institution, and Brooks, S. was the most influential author. Diagnostic criteria and management of TMJ disc displacement, as well as TMJ disc displacement-associated conditions, might be a hotspot for current global research. We provided an objective and valuable reference for future research on TMJ disc displacement.

Abstract
The machine learning (ML) paradigm has gained much popularity today. Its algorithmic models are employed in every field, such as natural language processing, pattern recognition, object detection, image recognition, earth observation and many other research areas. In fact, machine learning technologies and their inevitable impact suffice in many technological transformation agendas currently being propagated by many nations, for which the already yielded benefits are outstanding. From a regional perspective, several studies have shown that machine learning technology can help address some of Africa's most pervasive problems, such as poverty alleviation, improving education, delivering quality healthcare services, and addressing sustainability challenges like food security and climate change. In this state-of-the-art paper, a critical bibliometric analysis study is conducted, coupled with an extensive literature survey on recent developments and associated applications in machine learning research with a perspective on Africa. The presented bibliometric analysis study consists of 2761 machine learning-related documents, of which 89% were articles with at least 482 citations published in 903 journals during the past three decades. Furthermore, the collated documents were retrieved from the Science Citation Index EXPANDED, comprising research publications from 54 African countries between 1993 and 2021. The bibliometric study shows the visualization of the current landscape and future trends in machine learning research and its application to facilitate future collaborative research and knowledge exchange among authors from different research institutions scattered across the African continent.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is an umbrella term used to describe various conditions that affect temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and associated structures. Although the most conservative and least invasive treatment is preferable, more invasive therapies should be employed to refractory patients. Tissue engineering has been presented as a promising therapy. Our study aimed to investigate trends and point out future research directions on TMD and stem cells. A comprehensive search was carried out in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) in October 2022. The bibliometric parameters were analyzed through descriptive statistics and graphical mapping. Thus, 125 papers, published between 1992 and 2022 in 65 journals, were selected. The period with the highest number of publications and citations was between 2012 and 2022. China has produced the most publications on the subject. The most frequently used keywords were "cartilage", "temporomandibular joint", "mesenchymal stem cells", and "osteoarthritis". Moreover, the primary type of study was in vivo. It was noticed that using stem cells to improve temporomandibular joint repair and regeneration is a significant subject of investigation. Nonetheless, a greater understanding of the biological interaction and the benefits of using these cells in patients with TMD is required.
