Psychosocial Factors Associated With Perinatal Anxiety and Perinatal Depression Among Adolescents: A Rapid Review

The current review examined the influence of psychosocial factors on adolescents' perinatal anxiety (PA) and perinatal depression (PND) across geographical regions. Three databases were searched for articles published between 2017 and 2022 and 15 articles were reviewed. We categorized factors into social, cultural, and environmental domains. Social factors included adolescent caregiver trust/attachment, social support, perceived social support, trauma/poly-traumatization, and peer solidarity. Cultural factors included feelings of shame, marital satisfaction, partner's rejection of pregnancy, lack of parental involvement in care, parenting stress, childhood household dysfunction, and adverse childhood events. Environmental factors included neighborhood support, food insecurity, domestic violence, going to church, going out with friends, and sources for obtaining information. Routine assessment of psychosocial factors among perinatal teens is crucial to identify those at higher risk for PA and PND. Further research is necessary to examine the influence of cultural and environmental factors on PA, PND, and perinatal outcomes among adolescents. Developing the concept of maternal in teenage mothers: a hybrid model

Objectives

Maternal transition is a challenging developmental process requiring physical, mental, social, and cognitive preparedness. Therefore, the transition to motherhood is even more challenging for teenagers who are exposed to both the maturation process and adaptation to the parenting role. Therefore, the present study was conducted to provide a deeper understanding of the maternal role in Iranian teenage mothers.

Methods

A three-phase hybrid model was adopted for concept analysis. In the theoretical phase, 50 articles were analyzed. In the fieldwork phase, 10 participants were interviewed. In the final phase, the findings of the previous two stages were analyzed. This study was conducted between October 2021 and November 2022. After determining the attributes, antecedents, and consequences, a final definition was presented for parenting in teenage mothers.

Results

The concept of motherhood for teenage mothers was described as "a process-oriented phenomenon in nature," "complex, challenging and multidimensional," "development with immature transition," "a turning point in life," "a stressful event," "affected by several factors," and "bidirectional effects on life" according to antecedents, including "the level of received social support," "reaction to teenage motherhood," "teenage mother's characteristics," and "family structure" leading to "positive psychological consequences," "negative psychological consequences," and "loss of educational and career opportunities."

Conclusion

This study provides a suitable ground for evaluating the concept of motherhood in teenage mothers and employing it in nursing care of teenage mothers and children by identifying this concept.

Impact of trauma, support, and control perceptions during childbirth on post-traumatic stress disorder among Syrian immigrant adolescent pregnant women

OBJECTIVE

The probability of experiencing mental health problems in the perinatal period is high for adolescent women. Immigration is a complicated phenomenon that increases the risk of encountering temporary or permanent psychological problems. This study aims to determine Syrian immigrant adolescent women's support and control perception levels during childbirth, birth trauma levels, and posttraumatic stress disorder incidence and affecting factors.

METHODS

This study used a prospective cohort design and was conducted in a hospital in Adana, a city in southern Turkey, between February and April 2022. It included 122 Syrian adolescent immigrant women, and data were collected in two interviews. While the first interview was conducted within the first 24 hours following birth, the second interview was conducted one month after birth. Data were collected through structured interviews using standardized questionnaires, including the Personal Information Form, the City Birth Trauma Scale, the Support and Control in Birth Scale, and the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5.

FINDINGS

The average age of participating women was 17.40±0.94. The participants' Perceived Support and Control in Birth Scale total score was 100.55±20.12, the City Birth Trauma Scale total score was 43.11±13.29, and the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist total score was 30.36±16.86. Of all the participating women, 26% were found to have post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in the postpartum period. A relationship was found between support and control perceptions during childbirth and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

CONCLUSION

This study found that immigrant adolescent women's support and control perceptions during childbirth were better than expected, and they had a high level of perceived trauma during childbirth. The presence of birth trauma emerged as a robust predictive factor for posttraumatic stress disorder, underscoring its critical role in maternal mental health. A positive childbirth experience, which is important for all women, has become an increasing need for immigrant women. There is a need for developing and sustaining health policies guaranteeing culturally sensitive care to prevent immigrant women from having a traumatic birth experience.

The effect of emotional support on postpartum depression among postpartum mothers in Asia: A systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a chronic mood illness that typically develops in the first few months after giving birth. It affects 17.2% of women worldwide, and its deleterious consequences on infants, children, and mothers have elicited global public concern. Therefore, this paper aims to present an overview of the relationship between emotional support and PPD among postpartum mothers in the Asia region.

METHODS

An extensive search using various keywords was conducted in Science Direct, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, JSTOR, Springer Link, and Taylor Francis. The screening process was compliant with the PRISMA guideline, while the quality of the selected studies was assessed using the QuADS tool.

RESULTS

The analysis included 15 research from 12 different countries with 6031 postpartum mothers. A decreased risk of PPD for postpartum mothers is shown to be significantly correlated with greater emotional support, and vice versa.

DISCUSSION

Asian women are less likely to seek emotional assistance than other mothers, which is influenced by culture. There needs to be more research on the impact of culture on postpartum mothers' emotional support. Additionally, this review hopes to raise awareness among the mothers' friends and family as well as the medical community to be more attentive to postpartum mothers' emotional needs and offer specialized assistance.

The Effect of Doulas on Maternal and Birth Outcomes: A Scoping Review

A source of support during birth could be the solution to negative outcomes for the mother and her baby. To improve the birthing experience and increase positive birthing outcomes, sources of support during pregnancy should be evaluated and understood. The goal of this review was to synthesize the existing literature on how doulas might improve birth outcomes. This scoping review also aimed to shed light on the positive impact emotional support during childbirth can have on the health and well-being of mother and child. PubMed and EBSCOhost were used to identify articles using the search words with Boolean operators "doulas" AND "labor support" AND "birth outcomes" AND "pregnancy" AND "effects during labor." The eligibility criteria for article selection included primary studies investigating how doulas contributed to birth outcomes. The studies in this review indicated that doula guidance in perinatal care was associated with positive delivery outcomes including reduced cesarean sections, premature deliveries, and length of labor. Moreover, the emotional support provided by doulas was seen to reduce anxiety and stress. Doula support, specifically in low-income women, was shown to improve breastfeeding success, with quicker lactogenesis and continued breastfeeding weeks after childbirth. Doulas can be a great resource for birthing mothers, and consideration should be given to using them more, as they may have a positive impact on the well-being of the mother and child. This study raised questions about the accessibility of doulas and how they may help mitigate health disparities among women from different socioeconomic levels.
